THEKIDFROMTHEREDBANK  This software is great. THANK YOU! Now I don't have to buy a new printer. (Just because the manufacturer (HP) is to lazy to supply new drivers and wants customers to throw away printers after 2 years.

GPATPANDP  Hurrah For these DRIVERS !!!

...I still own/use a very reliable Epson Printer I bought brand new in 1997. I grew SOOOOO dag gone sick and tired of having to finagle and coerce the system drivers to work each and every time I updated to the newest version of OSX 10.5 (10.5.7 this time around). In these tough economic times (in case anyone has forgotten), WHY in tarnation should I have to run out and buy a new printer when mine works perfectly fine if/when/ever the system drivers will operate correctly.

Out of sheer frustration, I came SOOOOO close today to scrapping my whole updated system in favor of reverting to my OSX 10.5.6 (of which I had absolutely no issues printing at all once I spent a few days finagling and coercing it to work from the previous update) system backup because this time around I just could not get them to work in OSX 10.5.7. Then "whola !" I discovered these drivers upon which I happily got rid of those old pieces of junk and feel quite certain that I will never have to revisit this nonsense ever again. ***Whew*** !!! :)

THREEDEE912  I have to say, printing has gotten MUCH faster on my Epson R200 with the last few Gutenprint updates. It used to take FOREVER to print a single page on "Standard" quality. Now it only takes a few seconds!

Plus it has drivers for my old HP LaserJet too!

Only thing that annoys me is the "Common Settings 1, Common Settings 2, Extra Settings 3" or whatever, as it's difficult to find a specific setting hidden in all of the generic-named menus.

SUNDAYS  Good update for Epson.

But since apple use GP and Cups to print, my old HP does not work correctly.

I use instead a generic postscript driver.

MANNYAM  I have an Epson RX-580 and I lost the driver CD, so for me to print directly onto a CD, I had to search forever for the drivers, with this I am able to print from the print dialog without the need for extra software and it has many extra features that arent available in the stand Epson drivers. Works great!

CHRIS.JEROME2110  These Printer, and Also Scanner Vendors too, are notorious for releasing broken, or crappy drivers for their printers on the Mac Platform even while the System 7/OS 9 era,

Now, it's either:

• Non-intel or universal binary drivers

• Printers and/or Scanners with no ColorSync/ICC Profile support.

• Scanners with no TWAIN/Apple Image Capture support.

These comanies really need to get with the Times.

Hurray for good old open source!! Open source to the rescue again!

The biggest offenders are Canon, and EPSON!!!, Don't know about HP nowadays.

I'm so Glad I bought a Brother Color Laser Printer a few month's back, and since I've never looked back. The Color is exellent, and so is the Print Quality too. No drivers, or any other incompatible nonsense to worry about, just a good old text based PPD File, Compatible ANYWHERE!!!.

TIMBO13  haha, typical.

Great to see a intel compatible version of this. Just a little too late for me though. We have a hp laserjet 1010 and have been unable to print to it from our MBP's. We are receiving a new HP laser which is compatible with Mac OS X today. The same day the intel compatible version of these drivers are released which work with our old, no obsolete hp laser... Isn't life ironic. sigh.

OLIPOWER  I tried this for my Epson 1290 stylus photo, for which Epson only offers a broken 2 year old driver.

However, Gutenprint was SO SLOW. Printing 5 lines of text in a white shadowed box took it literally 15 minutes. The sound from the printer indicated that the printer had smoked a joint too many. Zzzz Zzzz Zzzz

(I know printers don't smoke weed, but it was as slow as the slowest max cannabis smoking dopehead)...

And then the printer dialog settings for Gutenprint:

Something more un-useability one has to look for for a looong time. Instead of meaningful labels for the sub dropdown menu items, it simple said:

Special features 1

Special features 2

Special features 3

Special features 4

etc etc

So setting up the color etc was a real no go.

T.PLOETZ  I tried to get my EPSON DX 3850 running under Mac OS X 10.4.2 but it failed. Searched the whole internet (well, almost) and the only thing I found was a release note of gutenprint 5.0 rc 2 which should include support for my printer. But, where do I get the rc 2? All I can download is the rc 1 which, apparently, does not support the DX 3850. Anybody else having this problem? Is there a work around, e.g. use an alternative but similar printer driver. Any suggestions urgently welcome!

CHARLES DYER  GutenPrint 5.0 rc 1 produces text output on Epson C84, HP DJ5550, and HP PSC1350 which is as good or superior to that produced by the drivers provided by the vendors. The smaller the font, the better the output compares. Testing included text from Safari, TextEdit, Pages, MS Word, Graphic Converter, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Reader, Preview, and, via Classic and Apple's LW8 driver in Classic, Word Perfect 3.5e and QuarkXpress 5.0. Font sizes which are unreadable using the vendor drivers show clearly using GutenPrint. Fonts tested include Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Palatino, Optima, Tahoma, Tekton, and Belwe. Font sizes tested went down to 3 point. (Geneva 3-point is hard to read without a magnifying glass; with a magnifying glass, vendor driver output is difficult to make out. GutenPrint output is clear.)

GutenPrint produced far superior graphics output to that of graphics output produced by vendor drivers, with the exception of graphics printed from MS Word, where the results were the outputs were identically poor, suggesting that the problem lies with MS Word. Colour and grayscale output from Graphic Converter, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, MS Word, Acrobat, and Preview, using .DOC, .GIF, .TIF, .PNG, .PDF, and .JPG formats (not all applications could use all formats) was tested. All test files had text, all had hairlines, all (except the .GIF) had gradients, all had photorealistic and hand-drawn elements. (I combined several pictures from Google's Test Picture site.) The pictures were converted to various formats using Graphic Converter, except the .DOC, which was a .JPG imported to Word using MS's picture import feature.

GutenPrint is now faster than GIMP-Print had been. The lowest-quality GP output is as good as standard-quality Epson and HP output and is delivered faster. Standard quality GP is between standard and high quality HP and Epson output. It is delivered slower than standard quality vendor driver output, but faster than high quality. High quality GP output is very slow, much slower than high-quality vendor output. It is also superior to high-quality vendor output. You can tweak GP printing further by going to and changing settings. If you don't know what you're doing you may get unexpected results.

In short, GutenPrint is at least very good if you print mostly text, and is vastly superior if you print graphics.

GARBAGE  My Epson C60 is alredy supported by MacOS 10.3.7 but I installed this to see if their were any worthwhile improvement.

I got printing problems & had to remove it.

The whole subject of printing services on unix like OS's (Linux, BSD including MacOS) is enough to give you Migraines for a year!!!

It's better to stick with the gimp-print supplied by Apple unless you have no other choice.

METAJOE  I can't recommend this enough..I was not consistently able to access Printer Features of my Epson 750 Photo Stylus with Epson's driver, or with the one supplied by the Panther installation.

I downloaded Gimp Print 4.2.6, and in less than 10 minutes, had those printer features back, as well as accurate color! If you've had issues with not being able to select "Ink Type" and "Dither Algorithm," et al, you know what kind of dismal color output you can get from an otherwise fine Epson inkjet.

Many thanks to the developers of Gimp Print!

anyway it just was for trying.. at the moment even if I read other comments if you really need a perfect print (I'm using a epson 1270) the original drivers are much better...

I rest in the hope the team project will in the future realise a really powerful driver 'cose they'r making a great work it just need to be finalized for real photo exploitation..

MAL COOKE  Really puzzled at the comments that os9 prints better photo than osx I and many others pro photographers find the opposite is true. I get almost perfect colour match screen to print from osx and my HP 1220c and an epsom c60 and other printers you have to make sure to use the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as the print output in photoshop ore any other colour output program. Inkjet printers as profiled for this colour space. Setting up the screen profile to sRGB and then calibrate colorsync and all should work out great. The paper you use will also affect the result a lot.

JAMES HARVEY  The quality of a photo print in OSX will depend largely on whether you have a properly profiled workspace, regardless of driver. That means monitor profiling with a hardware device and a proper ICC profile for the printer.

The great advantage of OSX is that it has full profile management built into the OS: and it's very good at it. Anyone who says that OS9 delivers "better prints" doesn't know what they're talking about, IMO

ANONYMOUS  gimp-print works pretty well. I too own a 740 and the official OS X driver works better, except the big margin. Pictures are darker with gimp-print. gimp-print works better with other models. That's it we must try between OS X driver and gimp-print.

ANONYMOUS  OS X is a great step forward except for printing, it is the worst. This project is great, it does Apple, Epson, HP, Canon, Lexmark's job. But it can't match a driver in OS 9. That's sad we nedd to use Classic to print a decent picture because it is impossible in OS X. Gimp print is good for black and white prints, tha's all. The Mac was the best choice for a photographer, it's sad that's history.

VINCE  "Like so much Unixware that's ported to Mac OS X, this one doesn't work either. The net effect of installing it with hopes of speeding up my Epson Color 740 which was already supported by Mac OS X, was to lose it. Dumping it and restarting restored my USB printer fortunately. (3/3/2003, Version: 4.2.5)"

Anonymous who wrote this can't have installed or properly set it up. My 740 runs beautifully with stunning output for a five year old printer!! In fact the Apple included printer driver wouldn't work at all and I had contemplated buying a new printer. Thanks to GimpPrint and GhostScript I have a brand-new, top-quality printer!

In reply to above.

It's based on Unix, it's free, and it works. If you want something with in depth manuals and nice installers that take hours to get working in a way that pleases everyone, go buy a PC and use that - happy shelling out for overpriced software.

Besides, it's hardly the place of a printer driver manual to explain the concepts of TCP/IP to you. If you don't understand that, google is your friend.
