GARY W. LONGSINE  ecto 3 works fine with WordPress, there are many happy WordPress+ecto users. Occasionally a 3rd party blog plugin will cause an issue. If you have such plugins, disable them all, configure ecto, then re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit.

(If both applications are using the same remote editing API, the load they place on the server, given the same number of posts being fetched, should be about the same. ) Thanks. /gary

At $17.95 this software is a steal and well worth it. They are currently in the works of a Universal Binary edition but the current version works quite well under Rosetta.

JUST SOME BANNED BLOKE  i love ecto apart from one major gripe [which drives me mad!] - ecto will insist on rewriting HTML code when switching between the layout and HTML modes. this makes "tweaking" the layout of a blog in the HTML window a completely hit'n'miss affair. sometimes you'll write in a bit of HTML, switch to the layout window to find nothing has happened and then switch back to HTML mode to find what you just wrote has vanished.

other times [and this happened to me only this morning] you'll write a [eg.] "div" tag round a couple of lines of text so you can apply a style to them, then switch back to layout mode to find ecto has moved where you inserted the tags so they now apply to the entire post [as a flick back into HTML mode reveals]

please could the developer do something about this - [if i know enough code to want to make edits in HTML mode then assume i know what i'm doing and leave the code as i write it!] - as it's spoiling an otherwise great programme!

What you want to use as "layout mode" is the Preview window (Draft -> Preview).

UN PAPIER  This review is also posted in my blog

Software Review: Blog authoring tool 'ecto'

I saw this tool in ProBlogger. Wanted to give it a try. Let us see how this tool helps me. I am trying out this tool to see if it is worth the $18. I would like this tool to be remarkable if I want to pay any money for this tool. The tool has to do far more than what I can do with an eclipse plugin or a emacs macro.

1. You can find this tool at ecto.

Inserting this link was at least very simple. It saved me a few key strokes with anchors. But I still have to cut and paste into a window.

2. The blog editor does spellchecking. By the way this spell checker complains about the word blog, that my friend is not so good in a blog authoring tool. My OS X textedit does this too.

3. Next I tried to create a amazon associate link using this tool. It takes a set of keywords and creates a list of books. I can then click on one and create a AWS link.

However I would rather have this done some what automatically. In my Blogger blog (you can find it here) you see 2 such links, one titled Related Books and the other "Keywords Book Links". I have posted articles in this blog on how to generate this every time you post an article. The scripts work very well for multiple key words. So I do not consider ecto's feature remarkable.

4. ecto has a scripting option, where I can write a whole bunch of Applescript, Python, Perl etc and click on a button to have these run on them. So I could do the automated Book link insertion that I complained about in point 3 using this script option. But what is so remarkable about this? I did the same with my script on the blogger. Besides you can write a bunch of scripts that are run from command line. You can add a step so that the scripts can post as well. So not remarkable again.

5. I can add word count. So what?

6.I can ping blog directories, like technorati. It makes it easy to add technorati tags. I can add the tags using the scripts that I use at my command line or like my book link scripts. The technorati tags do look good and look very much like my book links.

7. Publishing this to blogger is just one click away.

8. This does handle well posting an article with javascript without the error message I talk about in my posting.

9. This tool does not support b2evolution (this blog's engine).

So far I do not consider this a remarkable tool. Let me see if I change my mind before the trial period ends.

MR. X  "The blog editor does spellchecking. By the way this spell checker complains about the word blog, that my friend is not so good in a blog authoring tool. My OS X textedit does this too"

"blog" is not in any dictionary, so ecto's behavior is totally appropriate.

If you want custom words in your dictionary, that's what the "learn" button in your spelling window is for.

You don't know what you're talking about my friend, so I won't read your uber long review any further.

TOAST UNDER SPAM  this version seems to have completely f***ked up text formatting in rich text mode. highlighting a piece of text and hitting 'apple+B' or 'apple+I' make s the text bold or italic but then takes a new line. hitting 'apple+B' or 'apple+I' before you type a word to toggle bold or italic on, then hitting it again after you've typed the word, to toggle it back off again, merely highlights the rest of the empty line ahead of what you are typing and then deselects it as you begin to type.

pretty much defeats the purpose of the app, since it's almost as fast to just type HTML in the first place!

DDCHENE  Ecto is the best of its kind. I don't mind the interface -- perhaps because I never used Kung-Log. The "HTML Tags" window, with the ability to set key-equivalents, is a real time-saver.

The one feature I wish would be added to Ecto is a way of aborting commands to the server (in my case, Typepad) that for whatever reason have not gone through.

I discussed this with the developer: it's true that the failure of a command to be transmitted to Typepad is my ISP's problem, not Ecto's. But Ecto should not bail out, as it regularly does, when an operation fails and Ecto eventually recognizes the failure. (Note: the bailouts seem to occur only when a posting fails, typically at the publication stage. Uploads that hang don't crash Ecto.)

A browser that didn't let you cancel a failed request for a web page & that crashed five minutes after the failed request was sent would be unusable. Ecto is certainly usable, but I find myself quitting & re-launching it just to avoid losing work to crashes, which is inconvenient.

MAV.RC  I've been using Kung-Log for a while now, it's one of my favorite programs. Ecto has its issues, and there's a few things I don't understand.

-Why brushed metal? The latest version of the Switcher won't let you turn off metal at all, doing a great disservice to those of us who think brushed metal looks ugly.

-How much is this going to cost? I loved Kung-Log not just because it was good, but because it was free; there are those of us out there who can't afford to buy more software. Especially if it also means buying constant upgrades.

-The 'formatting' box for my MT blog doesn't seem to save its state. I usually have it set to "convert line breaks" but I have to re-set it every time I reload Ecto.

ADRIAAN TIJSSELING  You can turn off brushed metal via the Preferences now (Preferences -> Windows). It's noted in the list of changes.

To save the formatting, comments, and trackback state, use the Draft -> Save Settings menu command. It's in the FAQ as well as the documentation. ecto has extensive documentation you can access via the Help menu.

I know most people liked it that KL was free, but developing ecto is now an important part of my job and I do have a family to feed. Is paying a one time fee for using ecto that much?

SHAWN  I donated to Kung-log because I use it day in and day out - It was a fantastic piece of software that was quick and easy to use.

I have to say that my first impression of Ecto was very negative. The interface has taken a giant step backwards. The new "plastic buttons" (Safari-style) are very cumbersome looking in the toolbar compared to the icons you had before. The view/edit entry screen is very cluttered, it is hard to read all of the different rows of entries. I have several blogs and the default setting of the view/edit entry window shows every blog's post - even though I specifically choose one blog to edit. Finally, I primarily use my iBook G4, because I am on the go so much, and your app takes up most of the screen real-estate in 1024x768. All those new windows instead of the drawer style makes it feel *very* busy.

It is an early beta.. so perhaps this sort of review is premature. But I was kinda of amazed that Ecto looked worse than Kung-Log.

ADRIAAN TIJSSELING  Shawn, you can switch toolbar icons to the Aqua version using the included Switcher.

I already changed the default setting to only show entries for the selected blog.

I have to disagree on "all those new windows". Compared to Kung-Log, the "Entries and drafts list" is the new window, where it used to be a drawer. Changing it to a window is an obvious choice, given that this can do so much more than just give a list of titles. Now you have dates, blogs, ids, and more.

The status window is a necessary addition since the app is now fully threaded. Often I have two tasks running, which is impossible to reflect in a simple status bar at the bottom of the main window. In addition, the advanced prefs pane allows you to set it such that the status window only shows if there are tasks running.

SHAWN  Thanks for the reply Adriaan.

I did not think to try the switcher, in the past that was just use to toggle metal on and off... Is it possible to include an option in the Ecto configs to toggle toolbar styles? I see that the metal/aqua preference has moved from the switcher... is it just a matter of time before the toolbar does as well?

I didn't realize at the time that you could hide things like the ID, blog name, and status from the entry view. That certainly helps get rid of a lot of useless data to me. It would be nice if there was a way to "dock" and "tear" away the entry window ... so that I can switch between a limited set of features (the drawer view) and the power editing mode (window).

Overall the status window doesn't do anything for me because it takes about one second to post/edit an entry. I realize I am in the minority though.

You are doing great work with this app, do not lose sight of that amongst my comments. As the application matures I will make certain to leave a more positive review... I am not interested in turning users away from your tool... just finding a way to make the interface as minimal as possible.

ALEX  After some *very* happy 6 months with Kung-Log, this ecto leaves me hugely disappointed. This is a very good example of what you should never do to a software: change everything and make a simple and well working thing a very complicated and unfriendly thing. I am utterly deluded.

SHAWN  I must say I disagree. I found the interface to be very well organized and simple to understand. Also, keep in mind it's still Beta. I say with this now being shareware that the developer(s) will update more often with changes from users feedback. (Well, if they intend to gain a profit from their software)

SHINZA.COM  Methinks Alex meant to say "disillusioned." Perhaps it was late and he was tired...

SMIVEY  Hasn't allowed me to post to my Blogger site since January 1 2004. I keep getting errors. Used it for over six months before that without any problems. Download it and give it a shot.

ANONYMOUS  This is the best program I've tried for blogging. I actually use if for my Blogger site. I love being able save drafts for later, but what I don't like is how they're always listed in alphabetical order. I'd prefer an option to organize them chronologically. Other than that, good program.

ANONYMOUS  Everybody was Kung-Log writing! This little app rocks. I'm an absolute newbie blogger, and the ability to post and edit in this little app will make my posting much easier. I especially love the html pulldown menus that do all the messy htmlling for you.

BOB WEINER  I was able to finally get Kung-Log to work! I had incorrcectly referenced the wrong CGI script -- once this was fixed, I was good to go. I love Kung-Log! It works really great and certainly simplifies my weblogging (at pcweenies.com).

BOB_WEINER  I am unable to connect via XML-RPC. Not sure what the dealio is, but it is rather frustrating.

JUSTIN WILLIAMS  I love this program. I am not too fond of removing the bottom drawer in favor of another tab on the side, but I am getting used to it. I don't think I would blog nearly as much if I had to use the MovableType Web Interface instead of Kung-Log.

LAGOW  There is nothing like this for Windows at this price point (free!). Believe me, I've looked. This is wonderful software, particularly how it deals with uploading images. Makes it all quite painless.

As a feature request, I'd like the ability to pre- or post-date entries.

ANONYMOUS  yum. My blogging methods just got much easier. As my predecessors said, this is a must - have if you're a mac MT user. One entry and you're hooked. Beautiful; well-thought-out interface. No problems so far.

ANONYMOUS  VERY NICE. If you've got MT, try this out. Easy to set up; implements every option mt.cgi has for writing a new entry.

DNORMAN  This app is a MUST HAVE for anyone running a MovableType weblog. Makes managing posts drop-dead easy, and better UI than the web based interfaces.
