SCOTT4  We have been using EyeTV for about a year know and this has replaced our ReplayTV unit. Although it isn't the perfect DVR solution it is quite well done. Once the computer is up and running, we can do everything from the remote and it is pretty self intuitive. The export to iTunes and/or AppleTV is great and speedy (when you use the Turbo H.264 HD stick).

The new EyeTV iPhone app is wonderful. I can stream live TV, record shows, check schedules and watch recorded shows all from my iPod Touch. I was able to get rid of my Slingbox, thank to the EyeTV app.

My parents have switched their DVR unit over to EyeTV and they have found it very easy to use.

SIR GADABOUT  In brief: Disappointing.

To expand: EyeTV lacks too many basic features to be considered exemplary. It's currently impossible to schedule a reminder for a TV show, or edit a recording whilst hearing audio from a Live TV window. Furthermore, twin-tuner devices (such as the Nova-TD I have) are very poorly implemented and reveal a whole host of problems, ranging from poor scheduling-conflict handling to poor management of Live TV windows. I'm also not convinced it produces that great a picture, compared with WinTV on XP (which I run on the same machine)—the latter seems sharper with less blockiness.

It's also a glitchy app. For example, even at this late stage in development it isn't multi-user compatible, so some minor changes to channel lists (for example) require administrative authentication. The app can fail to receive available channels if you "flick" too quickly, and the sometimes loses them altogether—I've been inexplicably missing more than three channels for weeks now despite using the same software on the same machine with the same aerial connection. More annoyingly, the app has a habit of pausing playback (Live or a recording) for no apparent reason—I used to think I was nudging the mouse or whatever, but it happens when I'm across the room too!

Finally, the company seems to be slow to react or innovate. There have been a whole host of bug reports (over and above those I've mentioned) and feature requests in the forums for a considerable amount of time that have yet to be actioned. For example, Growl support is available, but was scripted by a forum user and not the company.

At the end of the day, though, and to quote from Demolition Man: "It's what we got."

JEFF H.  The software is awesome. I've been using it for years now and its only gotten better, for the most part. That is until the TVGuide EPG came along...ITS TERRIBLE!

Today it decided to just not download an EPG at all so now I have nothing...just a blank section where the EPG used to be saying that " no data to display, finish setup guide".

Did that, fixed nothing!

Hate TVGuide...go back to TitanTV!

LEO SPILL  I use this app a lot, and have been using it for a long time now.

My only compliant would be that since version three was released,

there has been an annoying USB bug.

On unplugging any attached USB device,

EyeTV closes and I get the channel unavailable notice.

Have to quit and restart EyeTV - Which means I can't use that

pesky USB for anything while recording.

A very frustrating little bug, in what is a very useful Mac tool.

JEAN-DENIS  EyeTV 3.1.1 is now getting better and better. I has almost replaced VLC for watching and recording TV.

The only missing feature now is to support separate settings for aspect ratio and anamorphic video/cropping.

Indeed when you choose for example a 16:9 aspect ratio, it assumes the video is anamorphic. This means there is no way to correctly full screen a letterboxed movie for example.

VLC allows for separate settings there.

But cheers for the Freebox support: it works really well, including support for advanced features such as dual audio channels, and teletext as subtitles, even in recordings.

KSCHLOBYNSKI  Will version 3 of EyeTV turn off the Mac after a recording?

I am still using 2.5, and I am quite happy with that older version, but that is one feature that 2.5 is lacking, and I can't see in the documentation of 3 if that is contained...

HIPPEMAN  There's still this bug with the Eye-TV Quicktime plug-in installed into the main library folder which causes a green poster frame for MP4 files in the Finder and in iWeb! :-(

Only when you delete this plug-in the problem is solved, but Eye-TV keeps on putting in it back in by relaunching the app.

MIKEEVANGELIST  Current US users can continue to use TitanTV if they prefer.

However, there are some nice benefits with TV Guide: two weeks of advance data instead of one, richer descriptions and personnel listings, and series episode metadata which enables Smart Series scheduling. The first year is included for all new and current 3.x users; $20 per year thereafter.

Version 3.1 has not gone live yet.

I suspect there's some confusion because the new Hybrid which we started selling at Macworld included a special version of 3.1 to support its new hardware. It will be a few more days before the general release is rolled out for auto-updates.

NEO979  I appreciate the info, but why is Elgato introducing a new EyeTV Hybrid now at all? At least in the USA, if you order the new one, analog TV may already be shut down before you even receive it.

Is it really just for the benefit of those low-power analog stations for rural customers and for international customers? Why not drop the hybrid idea and focus your efforts on the digital side that millions of people will soon be using exclusively (if they aren't already).

Jan 10 2009

MIKEEVANGELIST  The switch to digital only affects those using antennas. Cable systems will continue to use a combination of analog and digital for the foreseeable future. In addition, the analog circuitry of the Hybrid can be used to capture from external devices like VCRs, cable boxes, etc. A digital-only tuner is far less useful for many people.

DRDUL  The one thing that's been driving me nuts with EyeTV 3.0.1 is the constant prompts to authenticate as an administrator (I run EyeTV from a standard account, as I do with all apps).

I tried changing permissions on the com.elgato.* prefs files, and on a few other files I found in the Application Support folder, but with no luck. I contacted Elgato's tech support, and received the following answer:

Thank you for contacting Elgato Systems.

We are aware of a problem with non-admin accounts and EyeTV 3.0.1. There is a problem with saving a setting to our global preference when quitting out of EyeTV. Hopefully our Engineers will fix the problem soon.

Some of my customers have been able to click Cancel and bypass the admin password entry. Another changed permissions for ~/Library/Preferences so the non-admin accounts had Read/Write permissions.

SCHMELDING  A big improvement over the 2.0 version, especially with the UI. That said, it crashes every time we try to delete a recording.

One feature that would be nice to see added is a prompt to delete a recording once we have finished viewing it (a la Tivo). (Maybe make it a preference-switchable feature?)

JON HALL  2.5 caused some problems, but was a workable solution. But the new 3.0 is rubbish.

This is the first time I have been moved to comment negatively on a piece of Mac software: I paid for the upgrade, but it's been nothing but restart, restart, restart because of instability.

Five reasons not to upgrade:

1. DVD Player and EyeTV 3.0 fight for some reason (when EyeTV is recording during DVD Player playback), leading to kernel panics. Duh, restart machine.

2. USB driver code appears to lead to kernel panics all by itself. Duh, restart machine.

3. web access (iPhone) is so flakey as to be useless. Duh, restart EyeTV.

4. export is painfully slow (many days to export some stuff, it might even be that the export function is broken) Duh, restart encoding.

5. many, many spinning beachballs (unbelievable). Duh, restart EyeTV.

Sleak, slow and unworkably poor. EyeEyeEyeTV: stick with 2.5...

PEDROBAL  EyeTV3.0 essentially is the same app as version 2. Not much will have changed in the eyes of the user. It is easier to export to other formats. The export feature is flakey and unstable. Two out of three times I scheduled a recording, the export stalled in the middle so I was unable to view the movie on my iPhone. The worst problem with EyeTV is a horrendous memory leak. After running a few hours, the whole system slows down to a crawl. After taking a look in Activity Monitor I noticed that EyeConnect was using up over 900MB of real RAM (not just virtual), and that was while it had been doing nothing. I googled a bit and found that the only way to get my RAM back was to delete the file ~/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml, and Force Quit EyeConnect. This will help until you restart the system, after which EyeConnect again will eat up all RAM, so again you will have to delete the xml file.

Elgato's costumer support is of course lousy, they give you a support help ticket as a confirmation but I have yet to get a response from them now after a week. I would not recommend that anybody buys this product yet unless they are truly able to troubleshoot memory leaks.

MAXGLORIOUSMACS  I have a similar issue with eyetv 3 and the Memory-Leak-of-doom. If the liveTV buffer is running or I have opened a recording to be edited, the amount of available RAM goes to none.

I can hear the hard disk crunch like there's no tomorrow and my swap balloons in size.

Unfortunately it does the same thing when a scheduled recording starts. This would be understandable on a mac mini or even a macbook....but a Mac Pro with 6 gigs of RAM?

I hope Elgato issue a fix soon because failed renders are not compatible with rendering university work that is (naturally) left until the last minute!

Besides the leak, EyeTV 3 is marvellous. It plays much nicer with the Diversity than the EyeTV 2 ever did. I like the improved export functions, however some of the eye-candy can be cumbersome.

Worth the upgrade despite the teething troubles.

JAYBIRD1  The basic product is good and does what it says. I got it as a part of their Hybird tuner. However, performance on older equipment can be very disappointing. On my iMac G5 I can record okay, and even watch live TV okay, but watching a recorded show is just about impossible (iMac G5 1.8 GHz or there about, Leopard). The other note is their customer service IS HORRIBLE. I guess they have been overwhelmed since MacWorld 2008, but one simple problem took 3 days to get an answer and my second problem ticket is going on 8 days with no response from them. Online support is all there is. I can not find a way to get telephone support. This may be state of the art for this kind of software but watch the equipment requirements and Lord help you if you need technical support.

BOSIE  It would be nice if Elgato's website actually worked. When I try to purchase the upgrade, i'm forced to register (again, it doesn't recognise my old login) then complains about an order error because it tries to proceed without asking for any credit card info.

Ok this aside, I fail to see what makes this software a big figure version hike (other than to extract more cash). Given Elgato's European roots it still supports only the US preferred MPEG-2 HD which in Europe is considered the poor relation to MPEG-4 HD as employed for example by the BBC HD. Over 1 year ago Elgato promised MPEG-4 HD support was a priority. It didn't happen.

Thank you for contacting Elgato Systems. Your analysis is correct. See this article:

http://faq.elgato.com/index.php/faq/more/408

EyeTV should be updated to play H.264 relatively soon. A guess (not an offical statement) would be in the first half of 2007, but I can't say for certain at this time.

This is one of our priorities for future development. The main issue is that QuickTime isn't suitable for this, so we would have to provide our own playback engine. We use our own engine for all the files we receive.

Oh, btw... tvtv sucks (at least here, in Europe. Complaining with their "customer support" leads to a "It's *your* hardware's/software's fault" kind of answer). How happens that a free widget (guidaTv) retrieves *all* programs correctly while this payed service can't? And, without a tvtv subscription, many EyeTV features are totally useles!!! (DVB? KOSOVAR1  I installed the updater, then imported my movies (all created from VHS tapes) as mp4s. I dragged each one onto the AppleTV icon on the EyeTV toolbar and the movie sure enough were converted and importd into iTunes Ver 7.1.1. The proble is, however, that the audio and video tracks in every case were not synchronized, the audio part playing a full 2 seconds after the video. For this reason, I rated this update a 1, since any useful features are obliviated by the useless iTunes formatted movies that result. Added to this, it takes HOURS to convert a full-length movie using the most current Intel MacBook Pro.

PIZZACAKE   I have an EyeTV v2.4 for DTT Digital Terrestrial Television and it works great on my Mac Mini G4 1.25Ghz!!. EyeTV records the DVB stream unaltered, so you’re getting full quality DTT content as encoded by the broadcaster. I wanted to burn this mpeg2 content straight onto dvd without unnecessarily re-encoding the mpeg2 files and losing quality and time.

So here is how I burn EyeTV files into DVD format losslessly using Burn at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/21992/burn.

1. Export Recording as MPEG Program Stream

2. In Burn preferences under video select Force remuxing MPEG2 external streams

3. Select Video tab of Burn making sure DVD is selected as type and change untitled to what you want the DVD to be called

4. Add EyeTV mpeg file/s. At this point Burn will ask to save the remuxed mpeg2 file somewhere, make sure you give it a different name to the original.

5. The order of the files determine the order they'll play on your DVD. Each file will get a chapter point however Burn does not create any menus.

6. Burn or save as disc image if you want to test the DVD in DVD player first.

Hope this helps someone trying to do the same, thanks to the authors of Burn.

JEFF H.  Luv this software, but...

I have it installed on 2 seperate computers with 2 seperate DVRs, a Miglia on a G5, and a Plextor on a G4.

Everything works well, but the G4 pauses on it's own every few minutes or so...sometimes the cursor goes all the way to the top menu bar (exposing the menu bar and dock), and then it pauses. Sometimes it can go for hours without this happening, sometimes it happens every two minutes.

Drives me nuts!

I should say that it does not happen with any other program.

This happens every once in a blue on the G5, but very rarely.

Anyone else having similar experiences?

JEFF H.  Hello,

When you open up the prefs and go to guide, does it say that your Titan account is active?

Stupid question, but, are you connected directly to the cable, or is it going into a cable box first?

It's a shame that you aren't getting your guide...for me, that's half the coolness of EyeTV software.

TEXINICK  I've been discussing issues about the latest release with Elgato and there has been a new release of eyetv 2.3.2 (build 2403).

This release should resolves issues with receiving ABC2 in Australia, as well as fixing the Digital Output problems. I'm just downloading it now to check, however I can't check the Digital Output until tonight... maybe someone else could check it and confirm if it's all ok now?

BROY  I have a DTT stick using EyeTV 2.3.1 for an iMac G5 using Mac OS 10.4.7. It is a disaster. I live within a few kilometres of Sydney's main TV stations - almost line of sight with two of them. EyeTV/DTT Stick cannot find four of the main stations. In addition, if I leave the DTT Stick in its USB port EyeTV cannot find it when the computer is re-booted - makes it useless for recording programs when you are away unless you leave the computer on. Another feature is that once I change channels I cannot retrieve two of the channles without rebooting.

Elgato sent me a list of things to do - replace the preference files, zap the PRAM, etc. Nothing made any difference. When I told them they were sorry and suggest I get the stick checked. I did and it appears to be OK. I have spent hours on this and have decided that no software should require so much time by the customer in gettting it to work - I have written off my expenditure as a waste of money and Eye TV as a waste of time.

D9  I agree w/ Everyday Software. The Menu button change is very nonintuitive. You have to spend 2 seconds + to change channels but a simple press pauses EyeTV and then launches Front Row. Makes no sense! It should be in reverse, at least. Changing channels is such a fundemental function of any TV remote and EyeTV 2.3.1 makes it much more difficult.

EVERYDAY SOFTWARE  It's great that you can now sort recordings by date in the full screen interface! However, the changes to the Menu button functionality when using the Apple Remote are questionable at best.

This is typical of EyeTV, two steps forward, one step back. Elgato would do itself a favor by hiring some better interface/usability designers.

JEFF H.  I have a Plextor ConvertX with a USB 2 connection.

The only problem/issue that I have is that after a certain amount of time (usually 15 minutes, but always within a half hour of launch), EyeTV pauses.

This is a hassle as I have my rig hooked to a DVR and use the Plextor as a capture for digital cable, and to record from the DVR. There are a bunch of shows recorded on the DVR that I want to archive, and I often hit record on EyeTV and leave the room, only to come back to see it paused. This happens on all versions from 1.8.5-2.2.1.

I've trashed the prefs and even the whole app just to see it the same.

I do have an ATI Remote Wonder...think that has something to do with it?

Other than that EyeTV software has run great for me.

D9  I can understand your frustration, but in the end, the real star of this package is the EyeTV software. Sure you need the tuner/converter card, but there are plenty of alternatives to elGato's solution. The difference in the version is substantial, especially now w/ the Front Row integration that I can understand them charging to "upgrade".

Although hard to swallow at first, I'm certainly quite happy with having this software's new features.

EVERYDAY SOFTWARE  EyeTV is a fairly good solution for people wanting to watch/record TV on their Macs. However, it is definitely lacking when it comes to integrating it into a home theatre settings. I hope Elgato realizes this and is willing to add a full screen interface for viewing schedules and seeing what you've recorded.

I've also experienced some stability problems with EyeTV including random hanging and crashes. (To be fair, the crashes seem to be less of a problem with 2.1.) I've also encountered numerous bugs in their AppleScript support/implementation which leads me to believe their product testing might not be as thorough as it should be.

All in all, EyeTV does work as advertised, but a little more polish and addressing the lack of a full screen interface would go a long way.

NFINCH  The Home Theater/TV integration is done with their EyeHome product which can work via wired or wireless (the way I do it) networks. ELGATOSUPPORT  Thank you for your comments about AppleScript support in EyeTV.

Dozens of applications are using AppleScript with EyeTV right now, so I assume that most of the functionality works perfectly fine.

Everytime a problem is reported to http://support.elgato.com, we are more than happy to research it, and make repairs when possible.

EVERYDAY SOFTWARE  I've been in contact with Elgato tech support on several occasions regarding the Applescript bugs I've encountered. However, I feel like I should append my initial review of EyeTV to include my most recent experiences.

I have experienced several very serious problems with EyeTV and I caution anyone thinking about getting EyeTV to consider these problems before purchasing it. The first problem I've had is recordings occasionally end up being 0 seconds long, EyeTV simply fails to record properly. The second, and more serious issue, is EyeTV no longer reliably wakes up my computer to begin recording a show I have scheduled. I have an Intel MacMini, and it fails to wake up the machine more than it does. This is absolutely unacceptable since it prevents EyeTV from doing the one thing I bought it to do, record TV.

To Elgato's credit, they have been fairly responsive to my bug reports and crashes, but their product testing could certainly be improved a great deal.

ELGATOSUPPORT  Online sales are secure at Elgato.com, as expected. From our website:

Elgato is committed to preventing unauthorized access or disclosure of your personal information. When collecting or transferring sensitive data such as credit card information, we use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. SSL encryption is designed to make your personal information unreadable as it travels over the Internet.

While browsing our store you may not see the "https://" tag and the lock symbol that indicate a secure connection. This is because we run the store inside a frameset. The connection is secure though. To confirm this you can Control-click on the page and select "Open Frame in a New Window" when you proceed to checkout, prior to indicating whether you are a new or a returning customer.

Credit card numbers are used only for payment processing, they are not stored anywhere on our server.

AQTINC  Well that's your claim.

I could not find anywhere on your site your privacy policy, nor could I find any such assurances under your Terms of Use statement.

It's simply bad marketing to not make the transaction portion of your store VISIBLY clear that it is protected. The https designation and the lock are our assurances that reasonable security is in place. It's bad design from a marketing perspective to anything else.

Finally, I tried the "control-click" procedure. On Mac OSX 10.4.5 and Safari 2.0.3, it doesn't work as you suggest. How can I trust your other claims?

ELGATOSUPPORT  Look at the right side of this page:

There is a blue graphic, that links to the text I included.

You can examine the HTML source code of the store pages, if you like. They are secure, hosted by the site that provides our webstore, and encapsulated by a frame. Our frame is not secure, because it doesn't need to be.

You have to press the "Proceed to Checkout" button to see the https. Take the page that comes up (New Customers/Returning Customers) and open that frame in a new window. There is is - https.

That's the way our webstore is presented. I'm sorry it's confusing or suspect to you. Every single web-based transaction since 2002 has been encrypted and protected.

ELGATOSUPPORT  To help out your search for proof, here is a sample URL that should look familiar:

https://checkout.netsuite.com/s.nl?ext=T&c=ACCT111368&sc=4

Netsuite provides our online store.

That page is what's framed, after you choose "Proceed To Checkout".

From that point on, the transaction is secure. Most browsers just don't show frame elements as secure, even if they are - they just show the security level of the frameset. Only the framed element (typical HTML pages) need to be secure.

Thanks again for your concern - of course we protect every single transaction, since our customers security is important to us.

No customer should EVER have to go through those kinds of arcane procedures in search of an assurance of security in a web store.

I'm not asking you to prove your security. I'm telling you that you are not going to make as many sales as you could if you made on-line security obvious.

The more you try to defend this flawed design, the more you indicate to those watching that you are not responsive to the voice of the customer.

v2.1 isn't a paid upgrade to v2. Going from v1 to v2 was a paid upgrade--like 10.3 to 10.4 (wait, why is a .x upgrade $100+?) I didn't see how macupdate first displayed v2--if not as a paid upgrade I don't think you can fault Elgato for that.

However, I can understand your frustration of having data made unusable by the older version if you'd not yet decided to make the switch to v2. I hope you were able to restore functionality for v1.

ANONYMOUS  EyeTV 500 connected to a 15" Powerbook.

Time Warner Cable in Brooklyn, NY.

The cable out of the wall is split, one feed to the living room and one to the office. The office feed is split once again, one feed to the cable modem and the other to the eyetv (connected to the ant OUT)

I installed following the directions. I ran the auto-tune (QAM) with exhaustive scan. I ended up with 90 plus channels, most of which display "No Signal or Encrypted" Of the twenty or so that I receive, some are HD (wide aspect ratio and stream info correct for HD).

Since I am able to receive some HD channels via QAM, is it fair to say TimeWarner in Brooklyn NY is not encryptic these signals?

Do I need to get an amplifier?

Are two signal splits too much?

Can I split it once three ways?

Where can I get a carrier compatibility chart?

If I were to connect the eyetv to my cable box, would I still be receiving a digital stream into my mac?

Thanks for any help,

I found something called "EyeTV MPEG Support.component" in /libary/quicktime/ It looks like Eye TV 1.7 installs it.

Removing it fixes the problem.

Additonal: It looks like the "green" screen is caused by the additional prescence of the 3ivx component. Without 3ivx, it's a black screen.

ANONYMOUS  I have gone back to version 1.39 :-(

My Ti400 just is not fast enough for the new versions. (Although they work, it feels..not right-sluggush.) Too bad.

But I must say that 1.39 and the USB EyeTV do work very well.

Hope the Elgato's Team keeps this version alive :-)

ANONYMOUS  Every "upgrade" adds a problem. The newest one is a frequent two or three second pause during live play. The recordings don't show it but it makes watching TV impossible. Oh, and the timed recording is still hit or miss -- either it won't record at all or it'll record for ten hours instead of 30 minutes.

With Version 1.6.3, the video settings (brightness, contrast etc.) are NOT saved after quitting the program. They don't even default to the default settings. They all go back to "0".

Anybody else notice this?

AARON  I have the EyeTV 500 and it's incredible. HDTV broadcasts look spectacular. The system requirements state a dual G5 for the highest-resolution broadcasts (1920x1080 aka 1080i), but my PowerBook G4 1.25GHz has no problem with it either since the 1.5 upgrade.

Now, with the 1.6.3 upgrade, channel switching is smoother, no audio studdering after changing the channel, and performance appears to be improved yet again.

Great job, guys!!!!!

MJP  Still dazzled at the performance, quality of the HDTV image, and the recording capability of this little miracle box. Having the dual 2 G G5 and the HD Display doesn't hurt, of course.

Minor software tune ups will be posted I know, and I wish someone would publish a guide for ATSC antennae to help us sort out the choices, but I have absolutely no regrets about adding the 500 to the rest of my peripherals.

OLA.LJUNGBERG  My EYETV 400 has never worked. However my THOMSON digital box works, same roof-antenna cable.

EYETV is probably some cheap stuff with poor U.S electronics inside, it can not pick up any signal.

To really go to the bottom of this, I called for an antenna company, they measured, adjusted the signal, installed amps, everyting, and all values are at exactly the rights standards.

EYETV still does not pick up any signal.

I then took the EYETV and plugged in to an antenna in the center of Stockholm, then EYETV got signal.

Got and advice from ELGATO to use the update, 1.6, now eyetv blinks red, totally out of order.

For me EYETV is just a problem, which cost me a lot of money. The only good thing is that I now got some better pictures on the TV sets in my villa.

CHRIS  From the company website:

Founded in 1992 by Dr. Markus Fest, the inventor of Toast CD recording software, and led by CEO Freddie Geier, Elgato is a privately held company with its headquarters in Munich, Germany and a US subsidiary in San Francisco, California.

So I don't think it is fair to claim "poor U.S. electronics in side", especially when it looks like the design was likely done in Europe (only 2 of the company's six firewire boxes actually are made for the North American market). Do try and keep to the point of reviewing the product, and skip the anti-American rhetoric.

ANDY NONIMOUS  I had the similar problem with my eyeTV 200 -- no signal. It couldn't find any channel.

Turned out it was a power issue (as in, "not enough coming down the FireWire line"). Even though it was the only FireWire device attached to my big dual G4 PowerMac, it wasn't getting the juice it needed.

I added a DC power adapter and it worked fine.

BAREFEET  I just installed 1.6 over 1.5 and found a few problems. Dragging the markers during editing makes iTunes stutter in the background. To fine tune an edit marker, I used to press play, wait a second, pause, then drag the marker to lock onto the new location, but this no longer works - it moves the marker instead. The time line preview in the "Compact" dialog is showing 4 hours for a 40 minute clip!

It's nice to see auto-updating (though the bugs above make me wary about updating too soon). And the scheduled recording extension can now be set higher than 5 minutes (up to 30)

I'd like to see: TV programs in Australia, frame by frame advance of clip markers. I'd also prefer a more Mac OS X like interface for the listing of the programs, something like iTunes or the Finder, with grouping by program name and a search facility. The ability to burn prgrams to CD without duplicating the file would save a lot of time and hassle.

GORDYMAC  This update is AWESOME!!!

It worked perfectly with my EyeTV USB. With this update, I am now able to view recording in different aspect ratios. I haven't saved a recording yet, so I am not sure if the black bars are removed from the saved movies. I did look at the Export dialog, and it appears that the popular QuickTime codec are used (e.g., MPEG-4, DV, DVCPRO, DVC50, AVI, etc.).

It improves upon the last update, which added Remote Scheduling from TitanTV--which, only EyeTV supports BTW.

This is truly a great update, and I am now looking forward to purchasing an EyeTV 200.

ROLF  Tried to install EyeTV USB on a 12" PB and OS X 10.3. Complete failure. "No signal" all the time. The thing is extremely unreliable. Doesn't find all the channels, has difficulties to switch channels, works great for an hour and then dies again... Plugging and unplugging the USB cable a hundred times a day... Absolute garbage, if you ask me. Remember the Mac Performa 5200 with a perfect built-in tv-tuner? These there the days... EyeTV could be a fantastic product if it just would work.

PAUL BULLOCK  I have seen that a few people have had problems with the loss of certain channels, mainly BBC3 and BBC4.

I had this problem too. My Freeview box could get all the channels but my EyeTV 400 wouldn't.

I have found a workaround for it. So find here my solution, which I have passed on to Elgato support.

"Hi Andy,

Just to let you know, that I now have the BBC3/4 problem sorted.

How I did it was to do a retune of the EyeTV hardware. Then I sorted the channels to be as close as I could get to my Freeview channel listing. This ended up with some of the channels on the EyeTV having different channel numbers compared to Freeview.

I then did another retune with the EyeTV box, and hey presto! There was BBC3 and 4! But not only them, but 'f tn' too. And all the channels now have the same channel numbers as Freeview.

Now all I need to do is to get 'tvtv' to send my recording selections to the EyeTV box and I'll be well pleased.

Hopefully this solution will work for anyone else who has this problem."

ANONYMOUS  I use my EyeTV USB model in France for months now, I installed all the versions of the EyeTV software, and the only ones that really works are version 1.3.7 (official) and 1.3.9 (non official). 1.5 and prior 1.3.7 versions were unusable : half of the TV channels were ok, the others had bad image quality, signal were often lost (Mac had to be restarted). Only 1.3.7 and 1.3.9 are OK, image quality is very good even in MPEG1 (high quality settings), 1.3.9 has never lost signal until now. Since 1.3.9 is a non official realease, maybe you'll to ask to Elgato's Team, wich is most of the time very reactive.

My advice : if you own an EyeTV USB model only install 1.3.7 or 1.3.9, do not trust 1.5 or other versions :)

ANONYMOUS  This is a very good release. I'm using it with an EyeTV 400 unit in the UK and the new release adds a few welcome fixes. The software switches automatically now between different aspect ratios for digital TV and you can change how the image looks. The picture looks a lot nicer and uses a bit less CPU. El Gato seem to have fixed a nasty bug that stopped remote configuration with the tvtv service from working properly here in the UK. It makes my Mac into a really viable digital TV. Apparently there's an AC3 5.1 sound decoder built in but I haven't had chance to try it yet.

GORDYMAC  WORKS WITH USB MODELS TOO, read the Read Me for more info.

This new version supports TitanTV's remote sceduling feature. EyeTV now checks TitanTV's servers at a user specified interval to check for recordings scheduled on TitanTV.com. It works flawlessly.

(Note, you have to have a verified email address on TitanTV before this feature is available to you.)

Other features have crept in over this an the last update, like, when deleting a schedule you now have the option of deleting the schedule only, or it along with each of its recordings.

EyeTV reliably wakes up my G4 933 to record shows. It's great to not have to worry about that anymore. The clearer the TV signal, the more impressive the resulting recordings will look on your TV (USB version here)

Overall, this update works well. There was a bug I was encountering, where one station was not viewable on EyeTV--though the station was clear on the TV's in the house. The station is now viewable. It apparently fixes other bugs that I was not experiencing, so I can't speak on those.

Great update!

MARTIN HILL  I've been running the beta of 1.3.6 and now the release version of 1.3.6 here in Australia with our EyeTV 400 and it works beautifully. Considerably more reliable than our Strong Technologies 5290 digital set top box which has a built-in 80GB HD.

The EyeTV is more flexible with titling of recordings etc and higher quality when viewed over the VGA input to our video projector than the composite input from the 5290. Since the 1.3.6 update the EyeTV correctly senses all terrestrial digital TV channels here in Perth Western Australia. It is great being able to view multiple recorded shows at the same time as the box is recording another live show. Also being able to pause and rewind a live show while it is also being recorded is very impressive. The 5290 couldn't do these things.

We're running it on an old 500MHz G4 with only 256MB of RAM which does cause the video to stutter a bit when running other apps simultaneously. However, when I connect it to my 1.25GHz 2GB of RAM 15" Powerbook G4, it runs very smoothly without any hiccups.

The main problem here in Australia is the lack of coverage by TitanTV or similar to allow integration with TV scheduling.

GORDYMAC  Many users comment on the lack of USB support. Really, I think the USB model works great. What is needed? Elgato needs to get EyeTV 200/300/400 and EyeHome as solid and reliable as the USB model.

ANONYMOUS  I use an EyeTV 400 for digital terrestrial TV here in the UK. This 1.3.5 version of the software has problems with some of the UK channels and can't decode the picture properly on my G5. Reverting to 1.3.3 solves the problem. What does seem to be fixed is the gradual slip out-of-sync of the audio and video that used to occur on my machine in 1.3.3 with the EyeTV 400. Bit of a shame that this new problem with video on some of the channels has emerged. The overall quality of the video on the channels that work is much better than 1.3.3 with much less smearing of the iamge on things like fast-moving text.

MARTYN BARR  The EyeTV product is great and works really well on the channels it can receive. HOWEVER, it is totally unsuitable for the UK market! Via Sky's Astra service, BBC1 and BBC 2 are broadcast unencrypted. But ITV, Channel 4 and five are encrypted, even though they are 'free' channels. This is not a problem using the Sky Digibox as the Free to View card enables the signal to be unencrypted. The EyeTV does not unencrypt the signal and therefore I cannot received 3 of the 5 main UK channels! My mainstream viewing/recording is therefore restricted to BBC1 and BBC2 and the handful of other less attractive shopping and religious channels!

Interestingly the Eyetv 300 box shows the Eurosport channel. This, too, is encrypted and can't be received in the UK!!

ANONYMOUS  The reason they're touting TVTV is simple: Up to now, scheduling wasn't available outside of the U.S. By announcing TVTV (which is a German TV guide) compatibility at the European Apple Expo, the effectively sent a message to non-US users that thye are serious when it comes to adding support for international TV guides. (Different from Apple, who still didn't manage to localize Sherlock 2 channels in spite of their earlier promises.)

- For some reason now, when I fast foward, I can't hear any sound. I used to like that becuase I could actually watch shows in fast foward mode if I didn't have much time. You could make out the squeeky voices most of the time. But now there is no sound at all. Bummer.

- Why are they making a big deal about this TVTV thing if it's not available in the US, their biggest market (I assume)?

- It would be nice if EyeTV would integrate the TVGuide into the program instead of having to use IE. Would it really be that hard to do?

DIGS0  I agree that TiVo is easier to use than EyeTV, but you have to pay up to $12/month for TiVo services, so it better be. Plus, TiVo won't let you archive TV shows to VCD. EyeTV is also the only program so far (that I know of) to give OS X the ability to start the computer or wake it at specified times, which is almost worth the entire cost to me.
