JOSHK Actually in Tiger the stability problems pretty much disappeared. I have nap enabled all the time on my MDD Dual 1GHz and have not had a problem in over a year of heavy ProTools/Digital Performer, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, or WoW use.

MACUPDATE ADMIN Dale, you do realize that the parent post was posted almost a year and a half ago? And at that time the current version of CHUD was 4.3.3. The date of the post and the version number which was current at the time of the post is stamped onto the end of the post, as is the case with any and all posts in the reviews section at MacUpdate.

ANONYMOUS I have a Dual 1.25GHz mirrored door PowerMac G4. Under Panther, I could use the CHUD tools to put the processor in a nap mode, which kept the processor running substantially cooler. With Tiger, the CHUD tool won't allow me to select "Allow Nap"

HACKIT98 Use the 3.x version of CHUD to still be able to enable Nap Mode. I use it on my Dual 1.25 G4 with no problems. If you haven't, create an applescript to enable it on boot.

UMAROMC I would not recommend this as putting the G4 in nap mode was eliminated because it caused system-wide freezes and kernel panicks. A safer option is to edit Apple's CPU fan kernel extension's Property List fan table to speed up to higher RPMs at lower temperaturesâ CHUD tools or not I never run above 119°F with my settings. ZEB Does anyone know if this version, 4.0.2, allows you to turn NAP on and off in Hardware prefs? Turning off NAP seems to be the only fix for a squeeling PSU in G5's.

THEL I can't say re: 4.0.2 - I'm still downloading the installer - but 4.0.1's "Processor" pref pane has a Nap checkbox for on & off switching here. (My Mac is the May '03 1 GHz G4 eMac Combo model, in case that makes any difference...?)

TNH sure, but asking about nap is kinda relevant as Nap wouldn't stick in the last release. Of course people do use it for things it wasn't intended for because it's useful. So I'll ask. Does nap stick in the prefs now on restarts or do I have to keep checking?

ANONYMOUS The CHUD tools are great, especially Shark. Just open Shark up, start some executable, and tell Shark to start sampling. You instantly find out what are the hot loops, load/store problems, etc. One minor warning about the update: If previously you double-clicked on a source-code line number in the profile view to see Shark's annotations to your source, you'll be disappointed. This feature isn't working in Shark 4.

JACQUES After installing CHUD 4.0b6 on my G4 OS 10.3.5, the G4 was unable to boot! I disovered that the next day and my automatic back up app had already cloned the main drive on the back up drive. The back up drive was unable to boot too. I had to reinstall the OS from DVD, update it, etc. I reinstalled CHUD on the back up drive just to verify -> unable to boot again. Thanks CHUD.

ANONYMOUS Huhhuhh, Huhhhih, I've got CHUD. You disable nap, in the System Prefs, at the bottom where the new module is loaded, after you install CHUD. Personally, I've got a Dual 1.8 and it does NOT have the noise problem. Is it possible Apple did a quite revision? Or am I just lucky?

CAPN HACK turning off "nap" mode for your processors is what is said to fix the noise issue with some g5s. it will make the processors run hotter tho, so if you can bear to hear that noise sometimes then its a good idea to put nap back on (especially those times when youre using your processors heavily). turning off the second processor will also slow the fans and reduce noise

KUWAN.NET These are the best set of performance tools that money can't buy. Shark is the best profiler that I have ever used and blows the socks off of Metrowerks' $3000 CodeTEST product. I just got back from an Apple performance workshop where they showed us how to use their tools and they are by far the best kept secret of Mac OS X development. Shark (the profiler) will integrate with your application's source code (assuming debugging symbols are turned on) with both Mach-o and CFM (Shark used to not work with CFM, but the latest versions do). It lets you know when you've caused the processor to stall, when you're data is not aligned, etc. and it tells you how to fix it! Apple could easily charge $1000 for these tools and they would be worth every penny. The fact that they are free is a testament to Apple's devotion to providing developers with the best tools that are available.

GOSTCODER There's no level of graciousness on Apple's part here. It's a testiment to how badly Apple needs developers to move to MacOS X. This doesn't reduce the quality of the developer tools. But, understand the real reasoning behind their being free befor you get too glossy-eyed over Apple.

ANONYMOUS Well, it is all in the eye of the beholder. I (as a commercial developer for a few platforms) would view it as a serious commitment of Apple for performance - both for internal use for OS optimization as well as making sure that 3:rd party apps are up to the task.
