GRYFFIN  The interface is nice, but CoRD still offers much better performance. Just tried the two side by side, connecting to a Dell workstation running WinXP Pro on the same subnet. CoRD connected faster, and the frame rate seemed to be about double MS RDC's when dragging an object around the screen.

FRANKO  Works well with Vista (Ultimate) here.

According to MS' online doc: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/974283

this is what's new in 2.01:

Improvements that are included in the update

This update improves security. It includes fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer's memory with malicious code.

N. SILVA  Very nice remote desktop client. In some ways it's superior to the Windows version. For example, with the Mac RDC client, you can connect to a server's console by adding "/CONSOLE" to the end of the computer name, something that requires editing a config file on the Windows side.

Some users may still prefer CoRD, however, because of the way that the Microsoft client handles saved connections. (The preferences dialog is used to change settings in a way that's hard to explain and often has me overwriting saved connections with the wrong settings.)

The other thing that could be improved is the Dock display. If you're connected to several servers, it's hard to tell which Dock icon represents which server. The server name is on the icon, but it's often too tiny to see.

MACINSPORE  Fast and stable. Local Hard Drive sharing seems to have a few glitches, but I don't really need this feature.

I am a long time user of Tight VNC with Chicken VNC or Jolly VNC as Mac clients. Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection 2.0 is MUCH faster and has less screen artifacts in comparison.

Well done Microhoo!

PAULNOJUSTPAUL  While this does the job adequately and it is still technically a beta, I can't help but see it as a big step backwards from v1.0.3.

Still no real multiple sessions (I don't think multiple saved sessions cuts it), and it lacks the speed and stability the earlier version had. Has MacBU just given up on this? They've shown us before they're capable of far better efforts.

I hope the final version will make me eat those words, but for now I'd second Josh and say CoRD walks all over this. Either that or try RDC 1.0.3 with RDC Launcher.

MARKUSTEE  This program seems to work well - I am able to use both my PC and my Mac from the same desktop (my Mac). The PC screen on the mac screen is smaller - 13 1/2 inches on a 24" screen - but is is much better to be able to use the PC to do what little windows stuff I haven't been able to put on the Mac, and the Mac to do almost everything. (I have full blown Adobe Acrobat in Windows - and it is too *&^ expensive to buy a new copy for the Mac right now.) One keyboard, one mouse. I think that this setup is superior to the Parallels program, which seems to introduce PC problems into the Mac.

CLUELESS  Help! I downloaded Mac RDC 2.0 Beta on my IMAC. No problems connecting with my remote PC but the maximum screen size of the remote desktop is 8" x 6" against my IMac 20" screen.

I worked extensively in graphics and have tried to figure out how to go to full screen (20") on my IMAC.

The normal method of dragging the lower right hand border of the remote screen does not work.

Can anyone assist? I am computer challenged so keep it simple, if possible.

Thanks much.

DOCTOR-{X}  Wow... just wow. I left my Mac Mini G4 turned on, running RDC 2.0b1 connected to a XP PC and, after ~7 hours running in foreground, it ate ALL of my RAM, and my Swap grew up to 1 GB.

Closing/Quitting RDC dropped ALL of my gig of RAM to 826 MB free, 50 MB inactive. Amazing what this little RAM sucker can do. Reverting to RDC 1.3.

DAMIEN.BARRETT  Don, if you block (as you suggest) RDC network traffic, then you'll likely be blocking for the entire network. Do you want to explain to the PC admins why they suddenly can't RDC to their PC servers?

In a managed computer environment, there are many ways to block access to a program or service, as I'm sure you're aware. I merely suggest that Microsoft has chosen to use *Apple's own Installer framework* as suggested in their developer documentation to distribute their software. There are a lot of things Microsoft we can complain about--the fact that their Mac BU actually seems to be following established Apple/Mac guidelines shouldn't be one of them.

DONMONTALVO  Creating a package installer that requires an admin password is not very useful if the application itself doesn't prompt for admin password on launch.

With the possible exception of pre-schoolers, any user can simply copy the application to their computer from another. Alternatively, CoRD is free and easy to get and use. ;)

DAMIEN.BARRETT  You don't manage many computers, it seems.

Microsoft probably used an installer so that it requires a user to know a computer's admin password before installation can continue, which is NOT true of a drag-and-drop installation. And with something like an RDC access application, this is probably a good idea.

At least they're using Apple's Installer framework and not something like Vise. If you're really worried about what's being installed, you can use Pacifist to look inside the installer and see what's installed where. This is not true of Vise installer packages.

DONMONTALVO  I'm not sure I agree with your "You don't manage many computers" comment. Self contained applications are best practice wherever possible. If you don't want RDC used in your environment, simply block that traffic at the network level.

CoRD is a FREE alternative that works fine off the user's Desktop. There's simply no need for an installer where a drag install works.

OPENIT  If youÂ’re trying to snoop on your kids, you should use VNC rather than RDP. VNC will not lock the screen when you logged on. Although the screen will not lock the person at the console out, a small icon on the taskbar will change colors when you login.

Plus, VNC works on almost all operating systems from Windows, Mac, and Linux.

Google TightVNC or RealVNC. If your kid is smart, he will figure out that you are snooping on him.

Spector Soft makes some great software if you are into monitoring your employee, children or spouse. I would not use the software unless you disclose that you are monitoring the internet traffic.

I have deployed their software for a couple companies with great results

MAG4MAG  I have a G4 PowerBooks Mac running OS X, and have connected it to my kids XP running PC via speed touch router.

The thing is I'm really worried about my kids activities on the internet, I'm sure you all know what I mean. My home network is fine and I can even enter my kid's pc and watch some folders that I allowed for sharing, such as the Internet history folders.

However I really want to monitor their display from my Mac without them knowing.

I have recently tried the Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) from MS site http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopclient it works fine and I can actually view and use my kids XP on my Mac. However, when I log to my kids PC their display gets locked, and when they log in, I lose connection. In other words only when of us can view the XP display.

Can anyone please tell me how can I monitor my kids XP display via RDN when their on the net , without them knowing, form my OS X Mac?

I do this all the time with Cisco's VPN client for Mac -- it does work on most networks; but because the Mac (well, most Macs) doesn't authenticate against AD (Active Directory), it is not normally a citizen of the domain, and you can't get away with using simple machine names like you might be able to while you are physically in the office.

Try using a fully-qualified domain name as the address; for instance, instead of 'mycomputer', use 'mycomputer.domain.net', or whatever your servers are config'd to use.

An easier method is to hit Apple-D ('duplicate') so that you have more than one copy of the application file (they must have different names). I name one RD1, another RD2, and RD3, and so on... then I select the whole bunch of them and drag them into the dock. I regularly connect to four or five Win2003 servers at a time this way.

FREDERIK WILLE  I think this program could help me but I want to be certain before buying new hardware.

Current situation :

- living in small house with 2 floors with 1 (2 next year) children.

- PC location 2nd floor.

- PC used for photo/video applications + gaming.

Problem:

No place for kid(s) on 2nd floor and no place for PC ... .

We would like to be able to do the 2 things in the same place.

Possible situation:

Buy a laptop + wirless router and use Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection 1.0.3. to do the work sitting in the same place as your kids .

Questions:

Has anybody used this application for gaming?

I asume that controling the video and photo application with this software is able.

What performance does the laptop need?

I hope someone can help me before X-mass, for then alot is in sales :-)

ANONYMOUS  RDC on a MAC is great to use PC services - but please forget Gaming the inherent lag in doing this won't please you.

Gaming is really a 'single' machine thing. I don't have any games running on any system I have set up.

My biggest system is 12 Mini-Macs into one Windows 2003 Server box - It only is used to run PC specific programmes - Distance between some Mini's and the host is 1000 miles via Broadband connection.

But at times I have had to manage the server when I have been away and that was from Texas USA to Townsville Australia - flawless and speedy access.

ANONYMOUS  Remote Desktop and DirectX games is pretty much 100% incompatible, and it does not matter whether you're using the windows client or the mac one. All but the simplest games depend a lot on the video card for all rendering, and a remote desktop session looks like a non-3d video card. You can't even go full-screen on a cmd window, because the faked video card does not have a text mode.

ANONYMOUS  I'm not sure what's going on with your system, but this application is clearly not Classic. It's a Carbon application.

If it's trying to open in Classic, "Get Info" on the application and make sure the "Open in the Classic Environment" box is unchecked. If that fails, do a Google search for help, or check one of the various support forums.

In any case, giving an application a one-star review because your system is not behaving correctly is really uncool. Like many other posters have said, this application does one thing, and it does it well.

RUBEN  It worked great when i accessed a PC at one location but i can't get it to work at accessing PC 's that are behingd a firewall or stupid NAT routers. But i guess that not the software's fault it really is impressive. Much smoother than Apple Demote Deskstop or that stupid TibuckedWho? Hee Hee

ANONYMOUS  Performance is impressive, but not being able to connect to more than one server at a time is a severe limitation.

It is very frustrating to repeatedly log-out and log-in when working with more than one server. In these cases it is much more convenient to use VNC.

If you only need to manage a single PC, RDC is a great tool. But for managing multiple PCs, the Mac version of RDC seems to be intentionally crippled.

DAVID WILLIAMSON  I too am frustrated that RDC (Mac to remote control windows) seems deliberately crippled insofar as only one remote connection is possible at any one time.

No such restriction exists on the Windows versions.

Thanks

THEDARKTRUMPET  I have to admit that this program is much better than I anticipated at first. The options are pretty nice, and even over a wireless connection it's fast. I enjoy this application quite a bit, and is very very helpful for remote operations.

IAN  I have been using Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) for over a year now in my corporate environment to connect to the Windows XP box in my office. In fact, RDC works so well for me that I don't even have a monitor connected to my Windows machine; I moved it over to my Mac as a second monitor. RDC truly is like sitting at the other computer.

The first thing you have to do is turn on Remote Desktop on your Windows XP machine. This setting is in the "Remote" tab of the "System Properties" window (you can get there by right-clicking on My Computer and choosing Properties). You can optionally add a list of user accounts that are allowed to connect. With XP, only one connection at a time is allowed.

When you first run RDC on your Mac, you'll want to click the triangle next to "Options" to get to the good settings. Perhaps the most important setting to check is "Performance". When I'm in my office on the fast connection, I leave all the boxes checked. When I'm wireless on my laptop, I uncheck all of them. The Display tab should be your next stop. Here you can choose display resolution and color depth. Most programs look just fine in Thousands of colors and you'll save some bandwidth.

Here's a tip: After you change the settings and get them just the way you want them, go back to the "General" tab and click "Save as..." Put this file somewhere (I just leave it in the RDC folder) and name it something specific (e.g. "mypc.me.com fullscreen"). I have three different sized settings files like this. When I run RDC, I just choose the size I need at the time and off it goes. You can even have RDC save your Windows password in the Mac keychain.

If you choose to have local drives and printers connect to the PC, you can exchange files easily between the two as the PC can see your entire Mac hard drive. Printing to a USB printer connected to the Mac is still buggy, and will occasionally crash RDC. Thankfully, you aren't logged out of the Windows machine, so you just start it up again and use the print command again.

I really don't know how they are able to make RDC run so fast. It's much faster than VNC or Timbuktu, and since you're driving a real computer on the other end, it's faster than Virtual PC will ever be. Some things that require a high frame rate (like watching a movie) are jerky but still faster than any other remote method.

You can't beat the price (free) but you'll want to add it to your MacUpdate watch list because I've never seen Microsoft announce new versions of RDC. It seems like it's not a very important product to the Mac Business Unit at Microsoft, but everyone I show it to gets hooked.

GREG  can anyone get RDC to print locally? trying to print to a variety of USB printers w/o success. Even tried to share my printer over the internet, but couldn't add the network printer on the windows box, kept asking for a user/password.

DAVID MCKNIGHT  RDC will only allow you to connect remotely to a Postscript printer. There is a way to emulate a Postscript printer using Gimp Print and ESPghostscript that should work, but I haven't gotten it to work locally, yet, so haven't been able to try using it via RDC. There may be problems with multiple installations of ghostscript that make it not work locally, but I'm still troubleshooting that part.

I can tell you that the Gimp Print printer I set up is visible on the Windows machine, so I imagine once I get it to print locally, it should work. Also, it is supposed to be easier to set up in Panther, because apparently it doesn't require one of the components, so be sure to read the FAQ before installation of either Gimp Print or ESPghostscript.

Even easier, if you have a Postscript printer, try that one!

UNCLE_ED  IMHO, this has got to be one of the best Mac products from M$. I can manage several PC servers faster than I could from the PC version of this (on a P4-2ghz).

No problems in panther. Connects to 2000 servers (sorry, I can't go to 2003 server yet) quite quickly.

ALEXIS   This update fixes the problem with RDC hanging and having to be force quit after logging off a Windows 2000 server.

I wish there was a way to use RDC to connect to a mac, this is so much better than VNC. (I realize there are no terminal services in OSX).

It's so fast that I've actually used VNC's remote desktop client on my PC, which I was controlling from my iMac via RDC, and I noticed almost no delay. Awesome software.

ANONYMOUS  I have been using RDC 1.0.1 for two months. I use it to allow remote access from my 17" G4 Powerbook to my home desktop, which runs Windows XP Professional. I connect via my builtin Airport client and a Linksys 802.11g wireless access point. This lash-up has worked perfectly. It is also faster and far more stable than XP Pro emulation running in Virtual PC, which I also use.

My only complaint echoes one voiced by another reviewer: the lack of a feature to enlarge the window showing the remote machine's desktop to full screen is an unfortunate failing. Further I regret that there are no help files.

REDHILL  I wonder if anyone make it work on Mac OS X 10.2.8 and Windows 2000 SP4. I got the same error message when I try to connect to my Windows 2000 workstation.

Is there any server version for Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client needed on Windows 2000? How to enable the terminal service? I tried start lots of remote access xxx and remote procedure xxx from "Computer Management" "services", but no luck.

I have tried ping the PC IP address from Mac OS X, there is no problem; telnet cannot start, error message "Server allows NTLM authentication only".

Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

AGGIEMOM  Flawless, over corporate VPN (Cisco) and home airport using NAT - can run my office XP box from my 10.2.6 mac (laptop or desktop) at home or anywhere there is a fast connection to the internet. Stable, and wicked fast. Apps for which there are no Mac counterparts Visio, Remedy, run fine. Outlook much faster this way than IMAP Entourage *and* I get my office calendar properly. I have just chucked Virtual PC as XP on that is much too slow.

No if only I could slide files from one desktop to the other and toggle between full screen and windowed mode as in VPC, I would be a very happy camper.

Remember to get terminal services enabled on your PC before you try this. It will not work without that little tweak. I needed my PC IP address. Machine name did not work.

TIM  Running Win2K server, finding RDC a nice solution as there is no Mac client available for our new accounting system. We have connected 8 Mac's (from a 233mhz iMac to a 1G Powerbook, currently system 10.2.5), all withoug problems. Have noticed that the newer Mac's do seem a little quicker. Found that turning off most of the options (in the performance tab, "options" at start up) and adding more ram to the server made noticeable differences. Choosing "Full Screen" and simply toggling between environments also saved a lot of unnecessary scrolling in the Windows mode. Nice product, and a great solution for a company that has used Mac exclusively for 15 years.

DOUG  Running 10.2.4, works great connecting to Win2K Servers, even via a VPN connection. My only complaint is that it only supports ONE connection at a time where the Windows version can be spawned multiple times with each instance connected to a different box (I stopped count after 10 at once)

WES  Running Jaguar (10.2) on a DP 500MHz G4, I've had quite a bit of trouble keeping the software afloat. It seems to crash at the drop of a hat. When it works, it works well, allowing me to connect with our Windows NT Terminal Server. It simply will not stay on long enough to accomplish anything. Can't say I've ever had any other software on my machine that has been this undependable. On a positive note, anyone who has used Citrix will find set up very easy. The only thing in that area that is annoying is that you can't type in a custom screen resolution.
