ANON BUD  RP download agent still worked for me, too, but the Player itself kept crashing. After several e-mails back and forth from RP support (and a very frustrating time getting them to understand that I am not using a Windows machine!) I finally reached their second tier support system and am hoping they can fix the problems. I sent them to this page in MacUpdate and the corresponding page in Version Tracked to get them to understand this is not an isolated issue. Here's hoping for the best!

ANON BUD  I've been getting a run around from Real Player customer support. At first they thought I was a Windows user, Egads! A WINDOWS user?

Then they told me that the new version of Real Player was only available for Windows. I kept referring them to this MacUpdate page to look at all the people who are having problems with this.

Once I get back to my Time Machine, I'm gonna switch back to 11.01, which was working fine for me.

PEEDEEBEE  This doesn't work at all. Whatever radio stream I try to play, a window appears saying some components are needed (text/html), but in the box below that where the necessary components are supposed to be listed and downloadable, it's blank. In the discussion area of the Real site, a staff person posted instructions (from Oct. 2008) for what to do to fix this, but they didn't help.

There are fewer and fewer radio streams that are not playable in iTunes. Good thing!

DDSTUFF  I've noticed I've had crashing issues while trying to use Real Player 11.1. I found a solution to the issue.

Go to your "Library/Preferences/"

And look for "com.RealNetworks.RealPlayer.plist" and "com.realnetworks.realplayerdownloader.plist".

Or anything that says "RealNetworks" in there.

Delete them and relaunch Real Player.

BTW, I'm running Leopard 10.5.8.

Not sure if this will work with Snow Leopard users.

ILGAZ  The crash at launch happened on my Mac Mini G4 running current Leopard too. It is a thread 0 crash which doesn't have anything to do with prefs etc. Sorry I misunderstood the crash reported before.

I guess it would be better if Macupdate pulled off this update until they come up with a point fix like 11.1.01 etc.

ILGAZ  This must be something to do with the "refresh internet plugin" step as if a browser is open while you run freshly installed application, it doesn't crash.

I think the CPU (Intel vs. PPC) could be involved too.

I did my best as reporting it to them in official bug report form, posting to their forums and I believe they must have a good developer account enough to gather thousands of crash reports. I don't know if there is anything I can do. The real amazing thing is, it isn't some "one in million" crash, it can be reproduced very easily. How could they ship this major upgrade without testing is beyond me.

ILGAZ  I have no interest in your political rather than technical issues with Realplayer. It was always a Cocoa/native application which works just when needed and a nice shell for Quicktime Framework and an option to play mp3 radios (.pls) without launching iTunes.

If you don't like Realplayer for some reason or your windows past, OK, fine but please stop spamming macupdate. Real did nothing to Mac users and they kept releasing current software even before SJobs came back to Apple and everyone in industry were abandoning Mac users.

LANCE_BAKER  More often than not, Webmasters choose RealPlayer because it is easy to set it up to block downloads. They may not use it in this manner for all files or for all of their pages, but if they want to block downloading of any of their multi-media files, RealPlayer is tops for that, so it becomes their player of choice. BBC is a classic example of a site that blocks some downloads by using Real files. There is always a way around it, but for Real files, it is not an easy way, so most people give up and are unable to download. Yes, Windows Media Player is much more popular for home computers, but it often has quality problems and isn't easy to setup for blocking downloads. QuickTime is just not popular enough. Most Windows users (not you geeky guys who read this forum, but the unwashed masses) don't install QuickTime unless they buy an iPod.

BONKME  Well quite frankly this is rubbish. recently moved to Mac from Windows.

Went to the BBC website. You need to install Real Player. OK here we go. I always hated the old versions of Real Player on Windows. It put a load of rubbish on my machine that I didn't want.

But anyway I wanted to listen to BBC on my Mac so I thought well maybe they've moved on. Downloaded and installed the app easy enough, but when I click on the BBC website I get an invalid socket error.

In short it doesn't work out of the shrink wrap unlike ALL of the other MAC applications I've tried. You'd think they'd test at least with what must be one of their biggest customers wouldn't you? Inexcusable.

These guys deserve to become even more irrelevant than they already are.

MARIVAUX  Despite Realplayer's bad reputation, it has mostly been an ok application for the Mac--and a necessary one, if you would like to listen to the BBC or a lot of other realaudio-only radio streams.

The final builds of Realplayer 10 were basically perfect, with the exception that they wouldn't play Windows Media streams. It's nice that Realplayer 11 does that, but unfortunately, it suffers from a bunch of amateurish problems.

The primary one is the inability to connect to a number of standard radio streams, mostly in playlist format. Realplayer 10 connected to all of these streams just fine, but Realplayer 11 has (so far) been a big step backward. Moreover, Real has failed to correct these basic problems over many updates, and pretty much every basic media player can resolve those addresses.

So, I've started using FStream, and only drag out Real when I want to listen to BBC Radio 4.

CHRIS REED  From BBC website

'To listen to BBC Radio in the Player you will need to have a program called RealPlayer installed on your computer. RealPlayer is not made by the BBC, so you will need to download it from another site.'

However, this does not seem to apply now they have their own iPlayer, yet this appears as a popup window, like RealPlayer did in the past when connecting to BBC streams.

Not sure if BBC iPlayer uses RealPlayer as it's basis but BBC 'Listen Again' ans 'Listen Now' always used RealPlayer in the past. Go figure why. Shoutcast gives a url, BBC radio give popup.

I would be interested in why they chose RealPlayer and if there is a workaround. I use Audio Hijack or get BBC Podcasts.

MARK_CAIRNS  I would agree. Does anybody really even use it any more? VLC Player and/or Quicktime Player are really all that most would need.

The RealPlayer Downloader is quite good though as it automatically downloads the YouTube (or whatever) video stream you're currently watching in the background, so that's the only thing keeping it on my Macs.

STREPHON KAPLAN-WILLIAMS  Real Player 11 for Mac keeps or enhances my Flip Ultra videos so my video is sharp.

Editing flip Ultra videos in my iMovie 2006 results in a blurry video run. Thus I lose quality of the original Flip video.

iMovie is Quick Time, as I understand it, so Real Player 11 is now better than Quick Time for showing your videos, at least for Flip Ultra videos!

This may be major. Still exploring.

Now I need to improve my editor, which is currently iMovie 2006 for my mac, since iMovie reduces quality of my flip ultra videos, or Real Player enhances them, or at least shows the Flip videos in the fully quality they were originally taken in.

There seems to be no way to edit or export videos from Real Player 11 with the quality they show in in Real Player.

THREEDEE912  iMovie saves CPU usage and RAM by showing you a lower quality preview in the player window, as trying to live-preview full-quality DV files would take up much more resources. When you export your video (to QuickTime, iDVD, or whatever), it should appear fine.

You should see good quality video when playing the file in the actual QuickTime player.

THREEDEE912  I have to be honest about this. Years ago, RealPlayer was probably the WORST media player for the Mac, with it's 'buffering' and "UPGRADE TO GOLD" adverts everywhere.

These newer versions actually aren't that bad. The few RealPlayer files I do stumble across open up in RP without any nagging messages or too much stuttering. The interface is clean, although it isn't the native OS X UI.

Overall, it's a big improvement from the early RP days.

UNICUMUM  ...well there was a time when this was used on many web pages, before flv took over from Real

media and Windows media.

I cant back this up, but I always felt that Real Media used to run better and clearer than Windows Media did back then. as I just said, I can't come up with technical data to prove this, it was just my opinion...

and there must have been a reason why web masters did use this often; it always seemed proprietary and I dont know if the developer behind Real Media is a nice guy or nice people or not...

- I always respected the efforts that were made to keep this up, saying this I downplay the

terrible price that used to be asked for pro versions and export compression software of this... that sure wasnt nice but well, everyone seems to have one' s reasons...

I feel whoever is behind Real Media may have gotten squashed in between Microsoft, Apple, and hitherto Flash Media, which at this point is much more common than anything on the net.

Yet, I am reluctant to install this now, I downloaded it but I didnt install - I d probably install it if not so many daemons were running on my system afterwards, from what I got to read here in the previous comments.

To end my comment, I dont wanna talk anyone into using this, neither condemn it...

all I wanted to state is this used to be good, could still be good without 'under the hood' bloat additions for the system and who knows...Real Media could have been the solution for streaming media... could have been.

I repeat, I cant back this up, its just a feeling.

Take this comment as babbling and ranting of one long time Mac OS user, and dont flame me, please.

STEVEN JAY COHEN  Let's stay away from the uninformative whining of the recent posts. here's some real data for you if you are considering updating:

Version 10: works with widgets that play realaudio streams even if you switch back out of Dashboard

Version 11: stops realaudio streams when you switch back to the desktop

Even if it is not officially labeled a beta, version 11 is still not feature complete until this is fixed.

Hopefully, readers will find this a useful comment, since it actually talks about the software instead of whining or simply being a "me too".

Props to realplayer for adding a downloader feature. So far it works very well, maybe a bit easier to use than some of the freeware flv file downloaders available. I'll post a more comprehensive review after using it more.

MR.ASH  This update is realy very good. Especialy the function to download flash videos directly from the webbrowser is very nice. Unfortunatly this doesen't work for me very well. I can download flv file without a problem but it's impossible to play them afterwards. Absolutly every app hangs forever when trying to play a flv video witch is downloaded with RealDownloader. Hopefully this is only due to the beta status.

EJI  All I can say is, "Wow." This v.11 beta finally feels like a proper, solid OS X app. I don't know if it can ever replace VLC as my primary media app, but it has some nice features (including Web vid clip downloading and lots of playback options) and it looks like they had someone with a modicum of taste design the GUI. I also like the installation prompt for launching the RealPlayer Donwloader agent on login instead of just doing it automatically.

RAY16  Build 11 is a good start! don't leave Panther users behind, bring back it's own browser guide. another idea is different color skins, like Blue, Red, etc. Playback is not as smooth on slower Macs.

It's not really a knock, just want RealPlayer to be better without leaving older Mac users behind.

Thanks.

Then I wrote: "I could hardly believe my eyes when a browser window opened up while playing with the first RealPlayer 10 beta. Although very rudimentary and apparently based on WebKit, the browser in RealPlayer can actually access and display normal sites such as CNN.com! Anyway, when you go to their godforsaken website to download the free player and it asks for your email address just put in [random letters]@[random letters].[3 or 4 random letters] and whatever for the password. Then you can download without getting spammed.

The Review:

The interface is just acceptable. It's a major pain to get new versions. The program's built-in updater caused the program to freeze. The web plugin is ugly and takes forever to buffer, even though QuickTime streamed versions of the same content playback without a hitch. It's painful that anyone uses the Real format. But it's even more painful when they use WMP format.

Basically; neither of these companies provide their codec in a QuickTime plugin. They should just stay off the platform until they can conform to the standards.

RYAN  Honestly, as much as I hate to admit it, this is a really good media player. I'm using it on my 867mhz PowerBook running 10.3, and I haven't had any problems with it. It plays QuickTime, SWF, DivX, and of course RealMedia. Probably the most useful feature is the full screen player -- noticably and irritatingly absent from QuickTime Player. It also has the option to play full screen on another monitor but still control it from the main screen, a feature that I use very often on my church's video projection system.

I'm still not impressed with Real's codecs or business practices, especially in comparison to Apple's, but I'll give Real credit for writing a better media player. Its featureset is very similar to VLC, but I think Real's interface is a lot more polished.

JOE LOVE  Well I think I lot of what you wrote is very subjective. I don't think Real is better than native QuickTime. QT has been tried and tested for years, and although brushed metal is indeed not everyone's taste for a player there are several free players (which are just alternative front ends to QuickTime) which offer less glitzy windows (search MU).

As for no full screen in QT, that is a very unfortunate thing that Apple did; when you upgrade to QT Pro then you can do that and a whole load of other stuff, although with other free players you can do it as well, so no prob for those who don't want to spend the money.

But really QT Pro is so far ahead in terms of stability and usefulness than Real Player, MPlayer or VLC it is not even fair to compare them.

MPlayer and VLC are welcome applications no doubt and useful for playing formats not supported by QT, but their Linux/Unix heritage can not be disguised and their inherant flakey and glitchy and very CPU heavy performance matched with terrible color fidelity (with VLC) seems to me at least very unpolished compared to QuickTime.

And thank god QT Player is the ONLY video application that I am aware of that doesn't close and resize the movie immediately after playing. Which is much more than I can say for MPlayer, VLC and Real.

GRADUS  Ironically, Real and their arch enemy in court and business, Microsoft, have one thing in common: they have been working hard to release decent software for OS X, but they will never get any respect from Mac users, at least not from the zealous ones. Some of the commentators here are so busy bashing the company that they forget to review the product itself. Or worse, they try to pass their company bashing off as a software review.

You can dislike Real for many reasons - for buggy releases in the past, for their corporate culture, or simply for their not being Apple. Whatever floats your boat. But this is a a place to rate software, and it doesn't make any sense to give a _free_ player a "Worst" rating in the value category just because you think that "Real as a company sucks".

That said, RP 10 is as good as it can get. Great interface, good audio/video stream quality, nice performance, timely security fixes, support for OS X technologies like Rendezvous and WebKit - what more can you ask for? Someone in a cubicle on Real's campus did a very good job, and I appreciate that.

Many people complain that Real makes it unnessarily tricky to get to the free download. I agree that this is a bad practice. But you know what, I'd rather go through some loops and sales pitches on a website and then be set with the free version once and for all than having to live with that obnoxious QuickTime nagware dialog that pops up every other day and tries to force me to go "Pro" for $40 to enable high-end features like, uh, full-screen view. In this case, Apple is much more obtrusive and Real-istic than Real in their worst days, and if my fellow Mac zealots were more objective and less biased, they would agree.

A note about apps stability: I forgot it playing a radiopass (broadband) stream for 2 days, when I came back to home, it was still playing with exact same memory it was using when launching.

Also I'd use it instead of wmedia when choice is given, its performing excellent in pages (Omniweb,Safari etc) and you have choice to use its own browser which performs best for advanced places like Atomfilms etc.

PEDRO  Give me a break -- you can't find the big blue button saying 'Free RealPlayer'? Get your eyes checked.

Real did a good job on this one. No installer - just standard .DMG drag-and-drop copy, no 3rd party software, no ads, and as far as I can tell, no pestering me to pay for Superpass. Simplicity.

This is a great OS X app and the developers should be commended for supporting the Mac so well. That's more than I can say about WiMP, which I'm pretty sure isn't even a cocoa app yet.

FRANCO  Never experienced a download more difficult than this... the site page doesn't display in full in Safari, clicking on "free download" opens a page which has nothing to do with Real Player, the "go back" brings again and again to such page... then eventually I got... an .exe file for windows!

So disappointed that I've trashed also the previous version of the Player I had and deleted this application from ny watch list.

LEOOFBORG  Those who have spyware and bloat concerns about Real should google 'bbc realplayer' to pick up the one distributed to the BBC.

Of course, this won't be the one just released, that will take a few months while Real lazily gets around to its 'OEM Partners'.

Under no circumstances would I ever download directly from Real, security fix or not -- any so-called security fixes are not worth the SPAM.

I must say that this latest generation of Real Players for OS X is much more robust and usable than the older OS 9 and earlier versions. LEE  This version (10.0.0.310) of RealPlayer fixes 3 of my 4 gripes that I have had with it in the past.

1. I can finally open more than one document at a time.

2. I can close the last window and the program doesn't quit.

3. An actual AppleScript dictionary with commands that work.

My fourth gripe is that the Real video format is godawful and I wish people would stop using it for distributing anything. Same goes for WMP. But while there are still morons out there using the technology the player is a necessary evil.

It's a little less evil today though.

DAVE  Comes along sleeker than its predecessor. Plays media better. I was able to watch streams smoothly which would have a number of issue under #9. I've seen somewhat better video quality but this is pretty ok. Instant-on seems to work rathe well.

This version has, however, still noticeable stability isuues. Those need to be fixed. Other than that, it's not a bad product. I'm grateful for Real to enable OS X users to have an -overall- agreeable way to watch the huge amounts of .rm/ram etc. content on the web.

Also, the two versions, free vs pay should be marked more clearly, although it's hard to understand how people fail to notice the free version, and for their own fault, give this product bad ratings.

MIKEC  It would be helpful for those of us who want to know about an app's merits based on how it functions if folks could dispense with the evangelism and mud-slinging.

10.0 Gold has to be judged on the basis of how it compares to 9.0 and 10.0b. While 10.0b was a disaster of crashing, 10.0 Gold appears to work very well. Video playback is smoother than in 9.0 and the in-screen controls for magnfication and fullscreen bring it much closer to the same app as it exists for Windows. I'd like to see the same pre-buffering options in Windows for the OS X version, but I guess that will come with time.

In the GUI area, 10.0 Gold still refuses to conform to Apple standards, but at least custom close/minimize/zoom buttons appear correctly; they didn't in 9.0. I personally like the color-scheme changes from green/gold to blue.

The OS X version is substantially less intrusive and sales-oriented compared to the same app on Windows, which is mostly a blessing in my mind. Also, when compared to Windows Media Player, at least Real is making an effort with their Helix Project to reach out to more operating systems than just Windows and half-hearted support for Macintosh. That in itself is reason to consider them superior to offerings from Microsoft.

SCOTT WATERS  Very good program, stable and fast. The equaliser is perfect for getting the best out of a PowerBook. Real's trick of hiding the Free version's button on the pay version's pages is tacky, so that will cost them a star.

There's also a hassle with needed codecs messages that can be ignored, it seems that needed code should be installed.

EJI  Yeah, the 10.0 beta (build 118) with the security hole doesn't recognise the 10.0 gold (build 350, I think) as "new" software in the update feature. Users have got to be on the ball enough to figure it out and download it themselves, which is pretty poor planning on Real's part.

But really, does RP10 merit all this slagging off? The streaming video is easily resizable and the quality is good. The streaming sound quality is good. It's got a clean GUI and is easy to use. The free version even has a customisable graphic equaliser.

I regularly use RP to listen to all the BBC broadcasts (via Steam, an app I highly reccommend) and Prairie Home Companion on NPR, and I've never had a problem with it. So why is it crap? Because it's not made by Apple and named "Quicktime"? Because Real's CEO is a schmuck? Because the integrated broswer you'll rarely find a reason to use (though it comes in handy when you do) is now Java compatible?

Real's proprietary streaming media format is near ubiquitous, and this app lets us access it. And I prefer RP to Windows Media not only in principle, but in quality too. The real piece of useless, codec-less, resource-hogging crapware is Windows Media Player for Mac.

I went to special efforts to make sure all components of 9.0 were deleted prior to installing 10, so I know this wasn't due to component conflicts. I'm very disappointed in Real. ANONYMOUS  This is actually a big step forward for Realplayer on the Mac. Someone has obviously sat down and really looked hard at how to build a 'proper' Mac OS X application so they get my thumbs-up for supporting the platform.

The interface is a lot slicker than version 9. The full-screen mode is really nice now, with on-screen controls that let you tweak the video. There's also a Web browser window that pops up (if you want it to) that presumably uses WebCore looking at how nicely everything is rendered.

The Web browser plug-in seems better behaved on my favourite sites (including the BBC) but the sound quality is a bit echo-ey compared to version 9 when listening to streaming radio on the BBC's site, which I'm hoping will improve with the final release. Broadband video playback is smoother than before and you can go to preferences and turn off the return of information to Real's backend servers.

All-in-all, pretty good. I'm a realist and there's a lot of good content out there encoded in Real so I'm glad they appear to be making the effort to get the OS X version to better exploit the features our platform offers.

DAMNDJ  Regardless of what people may think or feel about RealPlayer and RealNetworks, this version is a major improvement over version 9. From the time you click on a media file to the time it starts playing has greatly improved. Also, the player does not leave random .ram files on your desktop. It removes them when the program starts playing the stream.

Think what you must about Realplayer, but if you're going to give it 1 star, at least try the program before bashing it.

Without them, you don't have access to everything, including radio stations (so it really loses out to iTunes, with which you get quite a few). Also, the search didn't work and the games didn't support Macs. Other than that, I guess it's an OK application---not that I think I'll use it much. I'm using Panther and didn't have crash problems at least. What I WANT is cable news live video streaming (MSNBC, Fox, etc.); that's something for which I'd pay. ANONYMOUS  Try resetting RealOne Player. To do that, hold down control and shift while launching the player, and click Reset in the dialog that appears. Then try playing back your file again.

ANONYMOUS  I remember what a nightmare Real software is from when I was a Windows user, and how happy I was to find JetAudio. Does Real Player for OS X constanlty intrude on you like the Windows version does? I'm really hesitant to install anything from this company.

ANONYMOUS  There is no messaging facility in RealOne Player for Mac OS X. It is provided as a drag install, and does not run a hidden process.

JAMES  I find that it often crashes my computer if I have Kazaa running in the background. Other then that it is pretty useful. I wouldn't bother upgrading to the pay version though.

DAVID KILTZ  Sleek, stable and with very decent qualilty.

As Real formats still dominate in the News etc. this is indispensable for the Mac. RealNetworks have done a great job. No complaints here.

SERRANO  It's slick, and bundled. The stability is OK, and the streaming quality has been excellent in my experience.

RAMON RICHIE  Video Quality is good, audio differs. But video freezes everynow and then, and almost always crashes after 10 minutes.

BOB  It's no where as good as Quicktime, but at least its better than WMP for mac os x now. Skipping to different parts is much snappier, although there is a noticeable delay. Getting better, we mac users MAY have a viable alternative to Quicktime if Quicktime is not available as a choice at certain sites. I'd say RealOne is no where near Quicktime, but this is quite a leap.

ANONYMOUS  Beta 2 is much less stable for me than beta 1. It crashes upon opening almost any stream.

ANONYMOUS  Looks nicer than the previous beta and the Check for Update feature now works. For me it seems to stall after 20-25 seconds connected to BBC streamed radio. Some other content plays fine.

DIETERO  Works fine, nice interface.

Missing are the 'Import addresses' and other few refinements but I realize it is a Beta.

When quitting it brings up alert stating that: "Real Player has suddenly Quit" The player is well well on it's way.
