FRODO_LIFE  Really like Cyberduck but 3 things preventing me from donating and making it my preferred FTP client:

1. No way to choose my preferred text editor like Coda

2. Bookmarks (address book is missing can only be accessed via drop down menu no way to import bookmarks from YummyFTP, Captain etc

3. Ability to unpack zip files on server

CAINER  It's never been "free" but always marketed as such. I suppose that might be called clever marketing. I call it deceptive, quite honestly. It's always been "donation-ware": The author would like you to donate, and asks you to do so. If it were truly free, there would be no such request.

NICK LO  From the homepage of the site: "Donations. Free software is a matter of the users freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. If you find this program useful, please consider making a donation. It will help to make Cyberduck even better!". Is that REALLY "deceptive"? And is it really so deceptive to ask for a small donation to help the developer who has no doubt spent hours on this tool you get for nothing? Seriously?!

CAINER  OK maybe "deceptive" is a little strong and maybe I read too much into it, but nevertheless there is contradiction:

Either is it FREE-ware or it is DONATION-ware

Since the author has purposely coded CyberDuck to display a "Please donate" message every time you quit it, then he wants donations, and therefore this is donation-ware.

In contrast, see FileZilla. This is also marked as Free-ware. It does not *ever* ask you for a donation. Ever. Sure, you can donate if you want, but the app itself is not begging you for it.

So if CyberDuck truly is Free-ware then the author should do the right thing and remove the nag screen asking for a donation. Am I wrong?

GORDON142  Used Transmit for a long time before getting tired of general connection unreliability. Tried Captain FTP, crashed too much to be useful. Yummy FTP was reliable, but the interface leaves much to be desired. Finally came across Cyberduck. Great interface, fast, reliable — just what I was looking for. It feels weird to be moving from a commercial client that I had already paid for to a free client, but Cyberduck just works better. I've donated to the developers to support their continuing efforts.

CHASER3275  Cyberduck is perhaps the greatest little freeware app I have ever used.

It is simple, powerful, elegant, and effective. It gets the job done for you easily, and it does it well. This application is simply a must-have for anyone who ever uses FTP, and most freeware applications should learn something from Cyberduck's ease-of-use.

LARAINE  There's no doubt this is an excellent program. I've never had any trouble with it. It therefore seems churlish to complain. But after trying out Yummy I find I miss the two columns--one containing all the files on my hard drive and the other the ones on my server. I seem to remember when I used Fetch (in the days of OS 9 when it too was "freeware") it was much the same and it didn't particularly worry me. I clearly remember taking the files I wanted to upload out of the folder on my hard drive and onto the desktop so I could drag them into Fetch's window. Of course in those days I could ask my Mac to put the files back (remember the old command-Y shortcut?) and with Tiger I can't do that. I guess I shouldn't have tried Yummy! But I wholeheartedly recommend Cyberduck if you are cash-strapped.

FIZZY  Why are you taking the files out of folders? Just have the folder window open next to Cyberduck, and drag back and forth. You can drag directly to a Cyberduck bookmark too. An FTP client doesn't need to duplicate Finder windows or their functions. Cyberduck is good for a nice clean simple FTP/transfer client, with everything you need and little complication.

LARAINE  I have to temporarily drag the files and folders of my web site out of their folder on my HD onto the desktop or I can't see them to drag them to Cyberduck. In the days of OS 9 all I had to do was select them and press command-Y to send them back where they came. I don't know why Apple couldn't bring this feature into OS X.

SAMPLER  In OS X 10.4.11, after you drag a file from a folder to the desktop (or anywhere else), hitting CTRL-z will undo the action. However with Fetch (and perhaps Cyberduck-I haven't tried it recently), moving files by dragging or otherwise isn't necessary. Select the files, "copy" them with CTRL-c and "paste" (CTRL-v) into the open remote window. This works in the Finder too.

I've never liked the transfer apps which have a two window format, not least because of the extra desktop space needed.

AETNARIA  Does it have the right permissions set?
(Version 3.0.3)

Oct 21 2008

BRADSMITH74  First question- can you go directly to the index.html file, or does that generate an error? For example, can you go here:

http://yoursite.com/index.html

and see the page correctly? If you get the error on this link, then as aetnaria said it might be permissions, or also make sure it's not a capitalization problem or slight change in the file name (index.htm vs. index.html).

However if that link is working, and you're just having problems when you leave the "index.html" off of the end of the URL (e.g. "http://yoursite.com/"), then it's an issue with your server's configureation (you need to set the server to serve files named index.html as default). Configuring this differs based on the server you're using (Apache vs. IIS, etc.). If you'd like more help let me know.

APFHEX  Like other reviewers, I think the removal of the bookmarks drawer was a HUGE MISTAKE. This feature needs to return, I don't care if it's a drawer or sidebar or whatever. My FTPing involves a lot of changing directories and has become far, far slower with this new version of Cyberduck. =/ The way bookmarks work now is even more useless in that they open a new window.

However, Cyberduck remains one of the better free FTP options.

RSOLDIN  Where’s the fly out.

I have been moving over to Cyberduck in the last month or so and really liked the way it handles my tasks. But when I downloaded and started up 3.0 I found the fly out window/menu is gone. That is one of the best parts about this program. Even the screenshot on this page shows it, weird that they would show something that is not there.

I’ll be using 2.85 until I decide if I should go back to my other ftp software.

XARIK  If by "fly-out menu" you mean the drawer, then yes, the developer has removed it from this latest release in what I believe is a move toward consistency with the Leopard GUI, which has deprecated the use of drawers (at least as far as I've seen with many other applications that used to have drawers but have dropped them in favor of a unified interface). The screenshot that is currently featured on this page is outdated as of this release, which is why it still shows a drawer when there isn't one.

So, unless the developer provides a new one, you will see the old one here.

TIM27  I too miss the drawer. If the developer was going for consistency with Leopard, then he should have made the drawer integrated like iTunes, Mail, or the Leopard Finder sidebar. Not remove it altogether.

ARVIDTP  I use Cyberduck all the time. Good app. The only thing I dont like about the 3.0 beta versions is that usually the bookmarks will not be visible. I like to drag-and-drop things on them, rather than in the window so I dont get springloaded folders accidentally opening and stuff, and so i know exactly where the file will go. THe drawer was a nicer bookmark interface.

KEYBOARDIST  Cyberduck is great: nice clean yet polished interface, straightforward bookmarking, drag & drop browsing and transfer, logical queuing, perfectly stable, and the always-welcome OSX app package (read: no installation at all). GAOSHAN  I am someone who has donated to the Cyberduck project so I'm a fan of this app.

That out of the way, I just spent an hour where I was moving files from a testing server on one host to a production server on another and it was not fun. Cyberduck crashed completely 4 times and dropped my connection a handful of times. The client even called me mid-transfer to ask why his brand new site was broken. Not good. Also, why can't I drag from one window to another? Not convenient.

I hate to say it but I'm here on Macupdate trying to decide if I should pay for Transmit... costs as much as I donated to Cyberduck but man, I need something I can rely on.

I'm not using the beta, btw. I'm on the latest stable version.

STAR-AFFINITY  FileZilla!? Are you crazy? ;)

No, but seriously - that must be one of the most ugly "un-Mac" FTP application ever. I may be that it works well in Windows and on Mac OS X too, but if there's one application there's almost "too many" of it's FTP programs.

Yummy FTP, Transmit, Interarchy, Flow, Captain FTP, Fetch, Vicomsoft FTP Client, Cute FTP and of course Cyberduck (I'm sure I forgot some..). All of those look a lot better and I'm quite sure they can compete with FileZilla in features and functionality.

Sorry FileZilla guys, but you have to make a far more pretty GUI to convince me and many of the Mac users out there. :)

BSHEITMAN   Cyberduck's one of those apps I really wanted to like - and I tried to like it for about a year of web development work. While I can live with the occasional program crash, I can't accept the all-too-frequent dropped uploads: failed transfer followed by the inability to delete the incompletely transferred files until a few hours had passed. Cyberduck just doesn't handle decent sized uploads(we're talking 12 megs) with lots of little files (maybe a thousand files tops).

I had better success with FireFTP, but my $30 is going towards Transmit.

P.S. And I thought I was going crazy when the bookmark flyout disappeared on the last version change...I mean...why, why would you take that away?!

ALJUK  That's exactly my point. It works great that way, but working that way is fiddly. Having two panes makes synchronisation between local and remote locations really efficient and means you don't have to rearrange your desktop / finder windows. Being able to add both panes' directory locations (both local and remote) as a favourite (as in Transmit) is a huge plus for anyone doing regular site work. i think Cyberduck's a good product, but a second pane would make it a great one.

ALJUK  I fail to see how the obvious efficiency benefits of a two-pane file management system, and the lack of a dedicated sync function between local and remote website directories in Cyberduck constitute a "mental block"?

What I'm USED to is trying out a variety of apps to see which does a job best, and as a busy webmaster, I would say that in this area, Cyberduck falls short and could benefit with some improvement.

Perhaps you prefer to drag finder windows around your desktop, perhaps that's what you're USED to, but there are more efficient ways of working.

what extra features do you think Transmit needs? What things do you miss?

MIKE RATT  @aljuk,

1. Posibility of view the same server path in two panels at time, like I said.

2. Resumable (very large files) downloads/uploads.

3. Built-in Compression.

4. email notifications for uploads.

5. Tree view (two views at time).

6. Custom Commands.

...

Transmit is great, I agree with you, but not perfect.

MIKE RATT  No.

In terms of UI speed I really like muCommander: http://www.mucommander.com/ A java cross-platform file manager that can access to FTP and SFTP. You can navigate very fast with the keyboard, view the same server in the two panes, built in compressor/uncompressor and many other great features, but honestly, is not a powerful FTP application.

In Windoze, you know... WS_FTP Pro, FTP Commander or CuteFTP: http://www.cuteftp.com/cuteftppro/tour.aspx

Transmit is a good choice, but is not the panacea.

BUSTER916  Cyberduck 2.8b1 has trouble with uploading Photoshop web gallery. I created horizontal slideshow gallery using Photoshop CS and after I tested it locally I uploaded it to the server using Cyberduck 2.8b1the Gallery did not function. The slideshow did not run and clicking any of the foward arrows or thumbnail images caused nothing to happen. After deleting and re uploading with no change. I switched to an old version of Fetch and presto the Fetch uploaded files worked as they should.

JONLINK  I have been using cyberduck for a while now (years) and I haven't found stability to be a deal breaker like others have. In fact when I tried out some other apps recently to make sure I was using what I thought was best I was reminded of how much I like cyberduck.

It is well designed and as stable as any other FTP program I have ever used. When I tried Trasmit I waS very dissappointed and actually screwed somethings up because of an unexpect "feature." Never had a single "oh $^#&!!!" moment with cyberduck.

I recommend to my friends that need FTP and I will continue to do so. My thanks to the developer for a great application

GREENLIKEAPPLES  I have been using Cyberduck for years now, and it has done me very well indeed - up until recently. For a free application, its regular updates and hands on feel of its developer has been excellent, and the program is good, but unfortunately, the last few versions have become buggy, dropping and timing out connections and causing lots of problems. So its time to find a new app.... Thanks for up til now, cyberduck!

ARTOORO  I've been using Cyberduck for a couple of years, I really like the feature set, and the the bookmarks are really cool. In my opinion it's the best free open source FTP client available on the Mac.

But I switched to Fetch 5.2 last week due to stability. Fetch doesn't crash on me all the time. I hope Cyberduck gets better is this regard, but until then I'm using Fetch.

WHIT_G  I applaud the effort (and clearly a lot has gone into it), but it doesn't really feel like a 2.x product. Operation is fairly slow across the board, from opening the app to transferring files. And on top of that, it crashes pretty frequently.

My suggestion: put a hold on new feature development and work on tightening the code so the thing moves smoothly as Fetch or Transit.

MACMEND.COM  I like it, I like the interface and its free which I like, however its not really very stable.

There are certain situations it just can't handle when uploading multiple files if you do things a little quickly it will hang, sometimes it just seems to hang for the sake of it. Its annoying

Why is this if I use the ftp client that is an extension to firefox it never hangs, but the GUI is awful and its difficult to navigate.

AMBERV  Before using this application, I was a die-hard NCFTP user. I never saw the point of slapping a GUI on an FTP client, but this one works well enough to use it on a regular basis. I still use NCFTP for some things, like command line automation, but CyberDuck is a very nice complement to the Mac. Especially nice is if you have QuickSilver installed with the CyberDuck plug-in. ANONYMOUS  It's not quite as simple as that. What about entering the ftp site? Cyberduck displays the details strangely - they don't match what the typical ISP says they should. So users unfamiliar with ftp aren't gonna connect immediately. They'll need to interpret Cyberduck's interface to match their ISPs instructions for another ftp client. In this respect, Cyberduck's interface could be simplified. Other than that it works well.

STEFANO G  Cyberduck seems really promising and offers a lot with a nice interface.

I needed to CHMOD some files on my new website and with Cyberduck it was easy and intuitive [I don't really know all these Unix commands].

So far I have been using RBrowser Lite [also free] and I feel I need them both [RBrowser Lite can't CHMOD, can't SFTP] although I like the interface of Cyberduck better. But it lacks 2 features: *move / copy files to a parent directory , *total size of items inside a folder. I would like also a Column view like the Finder and RBRowser. if this will happen Cyberduck will become my only FTP application. so far so good - with some toom for improvement.

Cyberduck is a bit slow if you dont have one of the higher end macs (like my little 17" imac), but it gets the job done easier than all the others ive tried, including fetch, cute, and others...

ANONYMOUS  Good, but not perfect ;(

It's a neat, powerful app but... it's sometimes a little slow and it's handling of Windows FTP servers rather than Linux doesn't seem as well tested.

Had a couple of crashes, and a lot of I/O error messages.

Would like a bit more info in the transfer list... just to see what's uploading and what's stalled !

STEFANO  it seems pretty nice fast small intuitive -

but i wish when I would get info about a folder I could get the total size of the files and folders contained inside.

now i click get info and it gives me 4 Kb size or something even if i have 15 Mb inside.

I like RBrowser Lite - but this has such a cleaner and nicer interface and faster startup.

also I'd like an option for column view.

but sFTP and freeware makes it very good

PETER DA SILVA  First, I have found that using Finder to connect to FTP servers leads to hangs of up to half a minute if the FTP server in question isn't responding quite the way Finder expects.

Second, the Finder doesn't seem to use the FTP proxy settings.

Third, mounting FTP servers using Finder should be restricted to servers you trust implicitly, since the files show up in the file system and expose you to microsoft-style "cross zone" exploits.

Bringing this together, along with the fact that Safari doesn't include its own FTP browser (as every other browser in the world does) and will fob off a directory link to whatever FTP client you have registered in LaunchServices, having a non-Finder FTP client available to use for LaunchServices is absolutely necessary for even a modestly secure setup.

I'm not much of a fan of Cyberduck, but it's what I use. It's not like I have a lot of options.

JARED  This app is fantastic. It's still not bug-free (the hang in the queue on multiple file overwrites could use some attention... hint-hint), but it's part of my daily workflow--that's saying something. I execute a lot of code on clusters and remote servers and spend most of my day logged in somewhere with SSH. In making repeated changes to code (thousands per day), the 'Reload' button in the queue is worth its weight in gold. Good work.

LUCITE  MAJOR CRITICISM: has no way to limit the number of connections (what was the developper thinking). So the result is that it will crash if you try to upload more than 3 files at a time when using most servers (any admin who doesn't configure their server to restrict the number of connections per user/IP would be a little off their rocker).

Could be a very nice app, and all essential features of an FTP client are already implemented. The GUI is not ideal, but then again most FTP clients have a stupid GUI (e.g. Interarchy, RBrowser).

ANONYMOUS  I wanted to like it. I started to like it. A free client that offers FTP and SFTP sounded awesome.

But it was slow. I had trouble accessing the Customize Toolbar menu (it took me like 5 tries of trying different click combinations on various features before the menu would come up). Worse, it kept resetting permissions on uploaded files. There was also no option to sort folder first, and it wouldn't automatically distinguish when to upload as Binary vs. ASCII. At that point, I couldn't use it.

Guess I'll see what happens with upgrades.
