THUS.SPAKE.Z xBack crashes every time when trying to run the wonderful screensaver "Electric Sheep". I notified xBack's developer about this issue a while back but so far no fix. Maybe in xBack's next version, hmm? One can hope. Wallsaver runs Electric Sheep without problems, though, so a fix should be quite feasible. Otherwise, xBack works quite well....been using it for several years. (Version 3.7.6)

EASER xBack has always had a smooth display and doesn't slow my system down. I also like the ability to preview and customize my screensavers in its window. I honestly don't know if their use of their own engine (rather than Apple's) is advantageous, but frankly, I haven't regretted buying this. Customer support has always been good. New competitors will likely always come along, but this program has a long-standing track record. (Version 3.7.1)

HARRISTYPE Excellent piece of software. Works fast, smooth, and flawlessly on my Intel iMac 20". Did someone really compare this to Backlight (last version was December 11, 2003)? Is Backlight continuosly being developed, and is there a universal binary yet? I'd gladly pay for low price software that's continuosly developed and improved rather than use free abandonware that's 3 years old (Jaguar-compatible?). (Version 3.6.5)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS ? First off, I love this program, since v1.0 it's been the best of the lot that do anything similar! ? Secondly, I didn't start buying Mac's so I can be reminded why the hell I stopped using DOS boxes and WinClones. For all of you nix-perts that love spouting off about how a TERMINAL equivalent can easily accomplish the same thing with a few lines of a commands, I have ONE thing to say. Get off your asses and write up a GUI front-end for the handicapped folks using Mac's and people like me that hate command lines! And don't forget folks one of the many great features of the Mac's are it's graphics capablities & elegant GUI driven OS. Let's not waste it with lame excuses like Terminal not to exploit it! Needed to be repeated obviously for yet another Terminal junkie. (Version 3.6.3)

SOUTHPORTLANES Can someone please tell me how to change xBack's menu bar icon? The developer's is the worst eye sore ever. It's un ugly, color image (read: not an icon) the "uglifies" my menu bar. Developer: please go back to the drawing board and come back with a menu bar ICON (preferably b&w like Apple's).

ANONYMOUS hmmm... pay for something that takes one line at the terminal to do for free. who cares if it doesn't use the screensaver engine. It's still something that can be done for free without the need for any software, shareware or freeware. (Version 3.4.3)

ANONYMOUS good point tho - whats the difference between apples engine and xbacks engine? and why is xbacks better? (Version 3.5.1)

ANONYMOUS Shell scripts like changedesktop et al... are not in the same class as xBack. xBack does not use the screen saver engine to draw the screen savers. We have our own code that handles loading the screen saver and generating the necessary window one level below the desktop. The last release of xBack to use the apples screen saver engine was v2.1. v2.5 and up used our custom code to perform the xBack trick. You can test his by renaming/moving the screen saver engineand running xback - the desktop animations will still work. (Version 3.4.1)

ANONYMOUS This product has several advantages over the freeware utilities that do the same thing. The largest advantage, though, is the most important; it's supported. That's why it doesn't crash Expose and why it works with 10.3, unlike just about every other utility. It has an intuitive interface, and it's stable. As OSX changes, xBack keeps up with it. This utility is maligned and given unfair one-star ratings because it costs money. Well, if you don't want to pay for it, type the terminal command every time you want a desktop screensaver. It's certainly not hard. Me, I'll pay a little for convenience and the stability denied me by the freeware apps. (Version 3.3)

SPACEMANIMAGES All I would like to say is thank you to Gideon software for doing the right thing. Now I can try to pursue this project through someone else. I am just sorry to see it go the way it did. In the meantime if anyone would like to get a DVD of over 6700 NASA images you can reach me at spacemanimages@aol.com. Again thank you Gideon software for retracting the xPak porting of xBack. (Version 3.1)

JAMES CONROY-FINN I took the advice of trying DeskSave or whatever it was called and was pissed off, to say the leasst, with the results. The bloody thing just put a black screen up in front of everything. Nothing would respond and I ahd to restart my PowerBook using the power button. Don't download this alternative, just fork out the dough for xBack. Unless you want a virus-like piece of crap. (Version 3.2)

DAVE HUNTLEY ok, so don't expect miracles! if you have a DP 1Ghz then maybe this will do the do with more complex savers but by the same time, it's REAL good as it is. use smaller savers with less going on, like the forest,abstract...etc... and my imac 800 does it with no lag. Also great access from the menu bar so you can stop it sucking cpu when you REALLY need it like in video editing and the like. great program. TYCHAY This program allows one to take a screensaver and have it appear on the your main desktop as the entire desktop or as part of one. Caveats: 1) It doesn't seem to be able to do many 3rd party screen savers (including Randomize) in some cases it crashes app; 2) it is a CPU hog (not much that can be done here); 3) there is no support for multiple monitors (I think); 4) It will cover all icons on your desktop. Having said that, the price (free) can't be beat. Try it out, it'll certainly be something fun to show off to others. Kudos to the author. (Version 1.1)
