JAZZYGUY I am SO sick of installing these security updates! EVERY single one requires APPLEJACK to fix caches, permissions and virtual memory! Every single one changes permissions from rw,rw ,r to lrw,lr. ENOUGH already! I have updated on all 6 of my Macs and their respective back up Hard drives all with the same volume and all running 10.5.8. To go through this is just TOO much! When will Apple learn to configure an update that doesn't mess with our permissions! (Version 2009-006)

OINCE This update on a g4 imac was NOT able to complete and put into the trash to try later. I attempted to restart to retry and got stuck on the grey apple screen. I was able to boot from Tiger install dvd and run disk utility to repair permissions and disk. Still not able to boot from hard drive. Booted again from Tiger install dvd and set startup drive to os9. Was able to boot os9 and noticed the time was off. Figured the eight year old battery may have given up. Replaced the pram battery. Startup from HD still stalls at grey apple screen. Sometimes I can boot from dvd other times it just ejects. Am trying to do a archive and install 10.4. Anyone else stuck like this? Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless you are running the version of 10.4 that is on your installation DVD, you should not repair disk permissions while booted from the DVD. The default permissions change with the OS updates, so if you run 10.4.11 and repair permissions using 10.4.3 (for example) your permissions will definitely be incorrect. Use the Disk Utility application from your applications folder for repairing permissions, and use Disk Utility booted from the DVD to repair the disk. I have updated three G3s running Tiger with the update and had no problems. It did not take as long as the last security update, and generated less hard drive noise than its predecessor. (Thankfully.) Did you get things to work on your G4? Have you run Applejack? Personally, I never bother with archive-and-install. If I am reinstalling, I: download/burn all the needed Apple updates to CD (I don't trust Software Update); backup; test the backup; boot to Tiger DVD; open Disk Utility; zero out the disk; boot OS 9 CD; reinstall OS 9; update to OS 9.2.2; boot Tiger DVD; install Tiger; apply combo update, security update, Quicktime, java, etc.; install latest versions of apps compatible w/Tiger; drag over any wanted data from my backup. I repair permissions in Tiger after installation, combo update, security update, iTunes update and Safari update. Erase/install is faster than archive/install, but it takes a while. I feel this method saves disk space and lessens the chance that any corrupted data will be carried over with the reinstallation. Just my opinion, and this methods works well for me. YMMV. ESMITH512 I just spent about half an hour enjoying Apple Security Update 2009-001 on several of my Macs. (I always put on my Mac Exorcist hat when I update this stuff anymore.) The stand-alone iBook updates were uneventfully routine, but a G4 Mac mini I use for network and storage services stalled, rebooted a couple times, and commanded the UPS to shut down the system after a very long screen-off delay. After reboot, the ethernet port (en0) shut itself off several times while attempting to connect to the system's DSL modem and was confusing the ISP when the ethernet port (en0) was active. I verified the DSL modem with a Linux notebook, verified the DSL modem, router, and ISP--all worked flawlessly under Linux. All systems are running MacOS 10.4.11 (networks are better on Tiger) and always have been kept up to date. On the Mac mini G4 network/file server, I went to Mac OS's network configuration assistant from the network control panel and re-entered the DSL login information, after which the system resumed normal operation without further incident. PHALERON This security update proved to be a complete disaster. Upon installation I was prompted to restart the computer. Waiting well over 20 minutes for the system to load, I decided to force-restart. The black screen then came on, prompting me to log on manually, which I did countless times but with no effect. After more than half a day of trying several remedies and 3 separate calls to an Apple technician (who insisted the problem could be fixed by fixing the permissions from the install disk) the System could not be resurrected no matter what I tried. I had to install a new System and used the rest of the day updating from the original disk version. Not a very good experience. (Version 2008-008)

MRMARKE Anyone else experiencing repeated Safari crashes when loading PDFs? After the security update 2008-006 was installed on my G5 running OS X 10.4.11 with Safari 3.1.2, some embedded PDFs (viewed by clicking the link in Safari) cause the app to hang - the result of a kernel panic that requires a force quit. This is signaled by a grey screen and a spinning beachball. The problem arises very frequently and is easily reproducible. Downloaded PDFs cause no problems. And if I command+click the link to open the PDF in a tab, and then wait for it to load in the background, I can then view it in Safari. And more, if I view it in the tab, and then go back to the other tab and click directly on the same link to view it, it will then load. If I click on a PDF link on the same site, though, it will likely hang. It seems that clicking on a PDF in Safari that hasn't already loaded is what causes the hang. But because only some Safari-embedded PDFs cause the problem, I'm wondering if it's related to font handing, which is one of the supposed 15 issues that the update is meant to address. (I don't have the adobe plug-in, and prior to the update experienced zero problems with PDFs). I have ruled out imputmanager conflicts and fixed permissions using Onyx and Disk Utility. My next step is to rebuild the font cache. (Version 2008-007)

DANA SUTTON This showed up on MacUpdate about an hour after OSX.5.4, and I wish either Apple or the good people at MU could clarify the relation of the two releases. Is this a security update in addition to the security improvements in X.5.4 (that should be used by everybody) or only to be used by people who, for whatever reason, do not care to make the upgrade? Or is this for Tiger? The fact that Software Upgrade ignores this suggests the latter, but it would be nice to be told. (Version )

| Jun 30 2008 |
DANA SUTTON In all probability you're right, but in the case of most software what "requirements" means "this is the minimum you need to run this software." I still don't think there's any substitute for explicitly being told what this security update is. (By the way, I'm not knocking MU's staffers, this is most likely an Apple problem) (Version )

DANA SUTTON What's ambiguous is, as I said earlier, in software descriptions the word Requirements typically means something very different (it specifies the minimum you need to run the software in question). AETNARIA I'd suggest you download the combo update for your current OS version (10.4.11 I'm assuming), and reinstall that over what you have right now. Then go ahead and run the other updates (without interruption this time, hopefully). It's worth a shot at least, and is easier than wiping the HD and doing a clean install. (Version )

JOHN SAWYER CJS Yes, Apple has a great development team, but it's also someone's responsibility at Apple to make sure information about why they released a 1.1 version, shows up in the Software Update description of the update, instead of burying it in an Apple article that 99% of users won't know exists. I'm not thinking that all bugs are always inexcusable or unavoidable (though in a few cases that's true), but rather that Apple needs to communicate with users better. My point is that it's part of a culture of non-admission of fault that's been normal procedure at Apple for many years. It doesn't help. Apple drops the ball nearly every time they're given the opportunity to communicate with users about a problem. For most practical purposes, almost the only apologies, acknowledgments of problems, etc. we receive from Apple, are occasional public statements from Steve Jobs, and eventual admissions of hardware and software problems from Apple telephone technical support, usually months after the rest of the world knows about them, and occasional Apple articles (too few to address enough of the problems people are struggling with), and some Apple Geniuses who tell users the straight dope. As someone points out in a reply to my comment below, Apple released an article at the same time they released Security Updater 2007-009 1.1 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307224), describing one thing that the 1.1 update is supposed to fix: Safari crashing. But Security Updater 2007-009 1.0 causes more problems for some people than just Safari crashing--there are a number of other Safari bugs that it causes for some people, but hopefully the 1.1 update will fix those too, but if so, Apple should have mentioned that in the article. Security Updater 2007-009 1.0 also causes a number of other non-Safari bugs for a few people, such as disabling Appletalk, preventing disk images from mounting, only one core of a dual-processor Mac working, etc. As usual with any software installation, some miscellaneous problems occur afterwards, and maybe that's not always something that can be avoided due to variations in people's systems, add-ons they've installed, underlying problems like directory damage, bad blocks on the hard drive, etc. that interfere with a proper installation, but too often the bugs Apple introduces in their updates, are the fault of the update, and Apple doesn't have much of a mechanism for working with users on those problems. If Apple wants to appear "corporate" (a longstanding struggle for them, from the beginning), then they should publicly address issues more, not less. The descriptions in Software Update for any of Apple's installers and updaters, is one good place where more descriptive messages to the public should be located. (Version 2007-009 1.1)

NEONBLUE2 Is the link to the page that describes all the changes and additions not good enough when it shows up in Software Update and the installer? And does Apple even manage this page? Other people can suggest a new version here on MacUpdate, often missing key new features and forgetting to change system requirements and the like. It's happened to me before with my software. (Version 2007-009 1.1)
| Dec 23 2007 |
KOBALT I'd be inclined to agree with you, neonblue2 ... if your statements were correct. But the link provided in the MU page here only leads (after further clicking) to a page that pretty much describes what John mentions and pretty much does not describe everything John reckons it falls short on. Makes me think that John's also followed the link and hence has been disappointed. Alternatively, the link provided through Software Update goes to just the same place leading to too little info. Even if, as you suggest, we cannot necessarily rely on who posts stuff here (although I would think that Apple keeps an eye on their own product update messages, especially somewhere like here at MU), than the link given is clearly an Apple link that leads to less than a whole lot of info about v1.1. In all, there appears to be no further information readily available, just like John suggested in the first place. If you have a link that will give us more, please provide it. Peace to all for the season :-) (Version 2007-009 1.1)
| Dec 23 2007 |
NEONBLUE2 Well these links add more to my assumption that Apple doesn't update their MacUpdate page themselves. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/33631 http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Security/Apple-Security-Update-2007-009.shtml Both lead to incorrect links, one is out of date and the other lists the correction. And sure the links in the installer and Software Update don't go directly to the description of the update but it does take you to a page that lists all security updates. If you can't navigate from there there is something wrong. (Version 2007-009 1.1)
| Dec 23 2007 |
MACUPDATE ADMIN I really do not understand all the fuss here. MacUpdate links directly (via the 'More Information' link on the product page for the Apple Security Updater 2007-009 version 1.1) to the Apple page for the download, and whatever info Apple provides there on that page is all that we at MacUpdate are able to provide. (Version 2007-009 1.1)
| Dec 29 2007 |
JOHN SAWYER CJS The fuss here isn't with MacUpdate's description of Apple's Security Updates, but with Apple's descriptions--I thought that was pretty clear from my posts. We already understand that MacUpdate can't provide any more info on these updates that Apple doesn't provide. MacUpdate is a great service, and I like it more than Versiontracker, which has slow, buggy web site sofware. I'll concede to neonblue2 above, that at least Apple provides a link at the bottom of each Software Update description, to the Apple article that contains a fuller description of each update. But that's worthwhile only as far as it goes--I wouldn't call those articles complete either. To find further info, the user has to frequent web sites like Macfixit, Macintouch, Apple Discussions, etc. But my main point is that not giving a complete description of everything that an update updates, right in the Software Update description, but instead making the user go through several links before they get to the article, isn't the way to present information. This may seem like a minor quibble to many people, for whom going through several links is no problem, but I've worked with thousands of average Mac users since 1985, and I know what their self-imposed limitations are, and I know where Apple's approach (this goes for most other companies too, who often take a similar approach) to get them to look further, doesn't work. Most people are technophobic, even if they own dozens of devices and don't think of themselves that way, partly because most people don't want to have to hunt for information--they think that's normal, because most other people feel the same way, so by definition it is "normal". Many people are comfortable being info-hunters, but most people aren't, and may never be. Those people still need to be catered to, to a certain extent, especially when it's easy to do so. And it helps everyone else too, even the happy info-hunters, when we're presented with the goods right at the point of origin, instead of needing to go on a Safari hunt to learn what we need to know. MACUPDATE ADMIN "But my main point is that not giving a complete description of everything that an update updates, right in the Software Update description, but instead making the user go through several links before they get to the article, isn't the way to present information." I could not agree more. It is a constant source of frustration for us here at MacUpdate, and not just in the case of Apple. (Version 2007-009 1.1)

DANA SUTTON The simple truth is that NO corporation freely admits its mistakes, and for a very good reason: if it did, it would open a floodgate of lawsuits. In Apple's case, if it were to admit that such-and-such a bug or security weakness had been present in its OS, you could bet next month's mortgage money that somebody somewhere would file a suit claiming that this had caused him damages. On some occasions, a litigant might have a legitimate beef, although most these would no doubt be frivolous suits without any merit. But Apple would have to spend a huge amount of time and money defending itself against them all, and the associated negative public relations fallout would be equally huge. So don't expect Apple's descriptions of its security patches and bugfixes to enter into specifics, that' s never going to happen. (Version 2008-002)

DOCCHAOS Apple offers only two versions: and both should work just fine in your G5. There is something odd, though. One of my older machines, a MDD, didn't even "see" the security update via Software Update. All that appeared was the QT update. Downloading the update from Apple, however, works just fine. STEW_42941 I have an iMac running 10.3.9. When I ran the latest security update (2007-004) and restarted I would get a kernel panic during the start-up process. (A kernel panic tells you to restart your computer in 4 languages). This was disappointing especially considered all of the previous updates which I installed without problem. Here was the solution that worked for me!! I tried restarting a dozen times, to no avail. But reseting my PRAM and NVRAM did the trick. Don't ask me why, but now I can start up at least. Thanks to macweaver.com for the solution. For instructions reseting your PRAM and NVRAM see: http://macweaver.com/maintenance/pram.htm Good luck. (Version 2007-004)

But I installed 2007-004 on my ibook 900MHz G3 running 10.3.9 and now the airport card refuses to reconnect to any network when the laptop wakes up from sleep. Anyone else had this problem? None of the networks around my house appear in the dropdown list after wake-up and when I run istumbler no networks are visible either. I have to reboot to get the machine to reconnect to preferred netwroks. It's getting really annoying. Anyone have any tips or hints? Also, I've been noticing more kernel panics and and have had to hard reboot a few times now. Very disappointed with this so far. (Version 2007-004)

MACUPDATE ADMIN I have had a very similar experience, no trouble since OS X 10.1, I think it was. But that post of caution about "randomly-disastrous Apple software updates", which I assume you are responding to, is valid. It may help some people avoid trouble. (Version 2007-004)
| Mar 17 2007 |
MACUPDATE ADMIN From MacInTouch.com: "The folks at Unsanity may finally have unravelled the mystery of randomly-disastrous Apple software updates: Shock and Awe: How Installing Apple's Updates can Render Your Mac Unbootable and How You Can Prevent it ... When you see the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of a software update, Mac OS X is really updating prebinding. Updating prebinding has a very, very nasty bug in it (look at _dyld_update_prebinding). If multiple processes are updating prebinding at the same time, then it is possible for a system file to be completely zero'd out. Basically, all data in the file is deleted and it is replaced with nothing. This bug is usually triggered when updating Mac OS X and every update to Mac OS X has the potential to render your system unbootable depending on if the "right" file is deleted or not. It's triggered during the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of installing an update. This phase is actually just running update_prebinding. If you launch an application that links to libraries that are not yet prebound, there is a chance one of those files will be zero'd out as dyld automatically redoes the prebinding on that file. I've been tracking this particular bug for about 18 months now. Most of the real "random" failures reported on various Mac OS X "troubleshooting" sites after a user has installed an Apple software update are actually manifestations of this bug. By real I mean not imagined problems or ones that have been there for a very long time but the user is just now noticing it and artificially connecting the cause to the recent update (it's called Pareidolia). Yes, this nasty prebinding bug has been reported to Apple and yes, it is 100% reproducible if you want to reproduce it. Every single time you install an update to Mac OS X whether it be an iTunes update, a QuickTime update, an update for daylight saving time, a security update, an Airport update, or an actual Mac OS X update, you can be hit by this bug. In order to prevent yourself from being smacked in the face by this bug, follow this simple rule: When "Optimize System Performance" appears during the update process do not touch your computer and definitely do not launch any applications. Just back away from your computer box as if it were a swarm of bees. Yes, it does mean that if you install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update, you may get hit by the bug." (Version 2007-003)

MACUPDATE ADMIN First, does your system meet with the requirements for the Security Update you are trying to install? If so, then try running all your utilities, maybe start with Apple's Disk Utility and repair permissions, then OnyX or something similar to delete all your caches. Maybe you even need to run DiskWarrior or similar app. Then try again to install the update. (Version 2007-002)

ADONSA Nusentinsaino has a valid point. I experienced the same error after accomplishing full diagnostics -- Ran Onyx - Every diagnostic Onyx is capable of. Did all the above on two completely different bootup volumes running System Tiger 10.4.8. Neither Apple Computer nor this website explains what the "requirements" are that are not being met. If the Apple staff would be so kind as to publish a list of the requirements for performance of the security upgrade, then we wouldn't be jerked around like Pee Cee users. Again, Nusentinsaino's question is valid and has yet to be answered. Regards. (Version 2007-002)

MECHAMANIA Good point, but notice there's also a 10.3 version available. If Apple were to have put out just the 10.3 version, people would also be wondering why. MARUKO DRINKING TEAM NO LOGIN WINDOW / PHANTOM DISPLAY GLITCH: I had a weird glitch after installing this on my MacBook Pro. Upon reboot, there was no login window and at first it seemed the Mac had hung. I noticed that the cursor would move though, then disappear when moved to the left edge. It seemed like it thought it was still hooked up to my Cinema display like it usually is when I am home, but I am in a hotel now with no external monitor. On a hunch, I typed my usename, enter, password, enter, and sure enough, it logged me in. So the login window had been open, just not onscreen. Even logged in, I had no menu bar. Luckily I have LaunchBar star at login, so I could use that to launch System Preferences, then open the Displays pane, press Gather Windows and then move my menu bar to the correct screen. I noticed that the Mac thought it had a 640x480 "VGA Monitor" attached, which is a far cry from the 30" monitor I usually have attached, so I have no idea what made it think that... Anyway that was a lame glitch, and actually the first glitch I have ever personally experienced with an Apple OS update. (Version 2006-008)

BRUCE_Y Works here. Details: I just installed this Security Update via Software Update onto an brand new Mac Mini 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo, OS X 10.4.8, with Firmware Update 1.1 applied a couple days ago. Re. Entourage -- I had not previously run Entourage before the Security Update. But was just setting it up today AFTER the Security Update, and it worked fine. We were able to get mail from sbcglobal, and also successful to import a ton of mail from the previous computer, a Win 98 box with Outlook Express. P.S. The Entourage / Office is uptodate with latest update patches from MS (perhaps that is significant). So, no problems to report in this instance. (Version 2006-007)

One of the other refinements that I have done to the several Tiger Macs I'm responsible for is to turn OFF the Spotlight-Entourage db integration by two (2) methods (use both). 1) go to Entourage Prefs and DESELECT the Spotlight/Include Entourage... choice (that is, clear the check box) 2) go to System Prefs/ Spotlight/ Privacy tab and drag ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data into the list (that is, your user documents MS folder). that is the folder that contains the Entourage email database. For me, the performance improvement is significant, and since I don't use Spotlight very much, I do not wish megabytes of email indexing there. (Version 2006-007)

OLTO Regarding the Entourage problem, try moving the Microsoft folder from the ~/Library/Preferences and launching it. Reinstalls don't generally touch the user prefs so will not solve the issue if it is a suspect pref file. (Version 2006-007)
| Nov 29 2006 |
Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, neither worked. Bruce, on your first option, couldn't do that one. I can't get Entourage to launch at all, so I can't get to the prefs. Anyway, I appreciate you taking the time to help me out with this. The only thing I can think of that happened was sometime during the update, it hosed Entourage. Every other apps appears to be fine, but Entourage is toast...even after reinstalling it. Thanks again. (Version 2006-007)

SEIKA7 The previous Security Update caused all Microsoft Office programs to stop launching (one bounce only in the dock) on both of our Intel iMacs. The solution that worked for me was to update prebindings as follows: In the Terminal, enter the following command: sudo update_prebinding -root / -force and enter your admin password when asked. The process will take a few minutes and then you should restart when you get your prompt back. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93984 for details. --Bryan (Version 2006-008)

WILLGK I'm running an iMac Intel Duo 1.83ghz with 2gb of RAM. I beg of you to NOT install this if you are running the same. So tons of work, and tons of data gone that I can't backup because my system freaks out every 15 seconds and dies. Please think twice before installing these patches without thoroughly questioning the necessity and asking others what their experiences with it were. (Version 2006-003)

#1 - Critical data should ALWAYS be backed up on a regular basis. Additionally, this should be burned to disc from time to time. #2 - One should ALWAYS have a safety-clone of their install stashed away. Did you repair permissions prior to running the updates? Did you boot from another bootable source - the Install Disc 1 or your clone and run a drive repair via Disc Utility? Or better yet, a good 3rd party tool like TTP4 or DW3? Magnetic media is a tricky thing. There's nothing wrong with Apple's updaters - you played on the knife-edge, and you got that one-in-100,000 cut. (Version 2006-003)

MAC_XCODER If he got lucky with the knife edge or whatever b.s. you want to put out there then I did two. I am an experienced software developer and maintain a Macintosh Support Website. Thank God I know what I'm doing and I feel pity for those that don't. Here's how to fix your problem... I booted up from the install DVD and... If you are experienced with the Intel Macs I'm sure you know that DW and the other 3rd party software wouldn't quite be recommended. So before you go blasting someone make sure you have your facts straight. Apple did indeed release a shitty update this time. DO NOT INSTALL IT IF YOU'RE ON AN INTEL MACHINE!!! Now a word of advice to the original poster... If you do an archive and install you don't lose any data that had been previously saved. It's all still there my friend. (Version 2006-003)

MAC_XCODER Ok here's how you NEED to install this update. 1. Boot up from your Install DVD 1 2. Run Disk Utility. Once in Disk Utility REPAIR THE DRIVE.

DP-G4-450GUY Uh, yeah, that's what I said he needed to do originally. I forgot DW hasn't been updated for Intel machines - my bad. Anyway, there's absolutely nothing wrong with this update. THE TARGET MUST BE IN SOLID ORDER before applying it, but that's true of any software installation. (Version 2006-003)

WILLGK Sorry for causing such a fuss, I've gotten so many replies / etc about this because I don't know much about mac's. I've been using PC's (windows/*nix) for 14 years and always wanted a mac. I just got this system 3 days ago so it's a brand new world. I was shocked when I installed the updates and all the bad stuff happened. I knew nothing about booting from the dvd's to archive / install. Now I know and it wont happen again. Thank's Joe for helping rather than blasting my somewhat true comments :) I have gone back and read articles on people using these patches and have read alot of horror stories which is why I suggested people always read before they apply them. I guess I will be attempting to install the update when I get off work this evening. (Version 2006-003)

SIXTYK I love how my non-Mac acquaintences are attempting to rub it in that (A) Apple has to patch some potential security holes and (B) that *gasp* an actual virus may have been found. First of all, Apple releases security updates several times a year. They are always checking for POTENTIAL security holes and when they find them, they close them. Second, Apple, to my knowledge, has never claimed OSX was invincible. OSX was released in 2000, it is 2006 now and OSX has been hit ONCE. That's a pretty good record. Personally, in my 15 years of Mac experiece, I have been affected by a grand total of 2 viruses... NVIR-A and NVIR-B. That was back in 1993. How many Windows viruses and spyeare showed up just last year? (Version 2006-001)

DEX KOONTZ Why would Apple let this thing be an automatic update? It crashed my PowerBook G3 Firewire so bad that I lost my address book and Mail. No utility would repair the drive to a point where I could do anything but erase and start over. Before I could stop my dad; it thrashed his iMac G5 flat screen. A fix needs to be sent out for all of us who got snookered by Apple's automatic software update feature. I've never had a beef with Apple -- but I'd like to slap someone upside the head for this one. ANONYMOUS Security Update app has preferences that can be set so that it is anything but automatic. And you should read and heed the advice MacUpdate has posted on their Apple Security Update 2005-008 page: "Before installing this or any other OS update, make sure your hard drive is in good shape: Boot from the OS X Install CD and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk function (or use a third-party drive utility such as DiskWarrior). When booted from the volume containing Mac OS X, run Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions function. After rebooting, again run Repair Disk Permissions." I'm betting you can chalk up your misfortune to being ill-informed, i.e., you apparently don't even know about setting prefences in Software Update, nor that you should always check your HD before any OS update/upgrade installation. ANDREW BLACK Security update 05-07 is for both Panther and Tiger. SOftware update will automatically install the right one, which is why you got no warning. Unfortunately, the Pather version does seem to be broken. The update_prebinding step, essential after changing the libraries, failes silently, leaving nay applications in an unusable state. When you try and launch the broken apps, the console will contain screeds of error messages, but of course m ost peopel don't launch the console application, so don't see them. When I tried update_prebinding manually, I got: 645 files successfully prebound, 104 files unsuccessfully prebound. What I'm supposed to do to get those 104 apps working again, I've no idea. Thanks. TOURNESOL Yes it does! If you had looked at the detailed description of this update you would find this under what has been done with CUPS: Impact: The CUPS printing service will not print unless it is restarted. Description: When handling multiple, simultaneous, print jobs, the CUPS printing service can stop printing because it incorrectly tracks open file descriptors. In addition, if CUPS receives a partial IPP request and a client terminates the connection, the printing service will then consume all available CPUs. If the service is restarted, then printing will resume. This update corrects the handling of multiple, simultaneous print jobs and partial requests. Resembles my problem pretty much don't you think?! Thats why I complain that I still have problems with printing after this update. (Version 2005-007)

Booted from another System Tiger volume and ran the installer from there. The Apple installer returned this error with no explanation of how to resolve it: "You cannot install Security Update 2005-005 on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update." This is really sad, since the volume easily met the requirements for installing System Tiger and upgrading it to 10.4.1. It's really sad that Apple's error message does not reveal the cause or remedy required.

FREDDY First of all, everything I run on my Mac works fine but Toast... when converting video for VCD , starts ok, but the comp always freezes before finishing, I deactivated the screensaver and looks like some improvement, but not solving the problem A lot of times I get a screen telling me that the disk is out of space for virtual memory(or something like that), that I need to close apps to liberate space(yeah, sure, what do I quit?, Toast, or Finder, the only 2 apps running), and the thing is, I have 3.5 gig of free space...It looks to me like a memory leak. I really can't tell where the problem is, as I installed the 10.3.9 combo update, all the security updates and QT7...somewhere apple screwed things and seems like Toast is the one bringing the issue up. Ok, time to remove updates. If anyone find this problem too, post about it please!! (Version 2005-005)

MARK JONES If you want to see whether an update is required for your machine use Software Update to verify. This will avoid future confusion. It's always worth using Software Update to check for updates but download them from the Apple Site as if for some reason your internet is interrupted during an update it can cause problems for you, but downloading an updater's .dmg if interrupted is just a simple case of redownloading it again.

RICK KENNEY I've had a terrible time trying to get MSWord 2004 to work after installing the update. No improvement with repairing permissions or deleting the Finder preferences. Finally starts after deleting all Word prefs - many hours later! (Version 2005-003)

JARN Installed the Apple Security Update 2005-003 on a G4/533/MP, G4/400, PB G3/400, iMac FP G4/800. iMac G5, and two TiBooks, so far. No problems whatsover to report. Candidly, some of the hysterical postings here had me a bit concerned, but then I came to my senses, poked around some other sites, and as usual, found the coalition of flakes and nuts was just that. Again, no problems to report and although YMMV, I'd have to say the whiners are either desperate for attention, or running Macs cobbled together with Scotch tape, or playing in root where they have no business at all. ANONYMOUS Another update with no issues. Installed without the slightest hitch, as ever. Glad to see Apple stay on top of security issues. I never hesitate to install any Apple update, I have not been bitten in the slightest by any Apple update since the very earliest days of OS X. Wish I could say that about all third-party updates. SANDOKAN I have never had any issue with Apple's sofware updates. 3 people work on this Mac so it almost never is asleep. One of the 3 people is a student engineer the other a student economist and the other is a web designer. So you get the feeling that this Mac gets much use. This is to say that it's not because it's not used that it does not have problems with software updates. (Version 2005-003)

IAMDORIAN [DPG4450Guy _ No problems at all. Works great Sigh. When will people that have catastrophic issues after applying Apple's updates realize they had a problem on their individual machines, instead of somehow thinking Apple would release some kludge to destroy their computers?] Never heard of "planned obsolescence?" Tiger is in the wings. Why would Apple WANT to correct Panther ? Why would a corporation, driven by stockholder greed and CEO's desires for mega profits dictate any money-making slight-of-hand strategies? You tell me? Ask MS CEOs if this works...perpetual upgrades!? Nothing new. This is sadly a malaise of humanity, and a basic principle of capitalism (as opposed to a "Free Market" economy). Apple's last update causes my fan to start and stop and get really loud, and I am now seeing Kernel Panics on a regular basis, on what was, before, a clean machine. Is it my spefici machine (original 1.8 GHz dual G5)? Is it a coincidence, by design, deliberate negligence, or is this catering to some other agenda? Who can say? I sure hope I don't have to reinstall the older system...again! (Version 2005-003)

ANONYMOUS Hmmmm, i can kind of see your point of view but then if apple released a dodgy upgrade wouldn't the regular user think that 10.4 would be just as buggy? And if so why should he/she spend cash on it if it's just going to trash his/her computer? Plus if a security update was inspected and this type of code was found.....well, there goes apple's user base. Oh, and there go apple's stockholders. (Version 2005-003)

DANA SUTTON Hmm, this writer sounds like he has had a massive overdose of Noam Chomsky/Ralph Nader broad-brush demonization of corporations (i. m. h. o. both Chomsky and Nader have closely studied the moves of the paranoids who forged The Protocols of the Elders of Zion). Yeah, a few corporations may warrant some harsh treatment. But Apple Computer sure as hell doesn't. The problem is simply this, that in the modern world of fighting off cyber criminals, hackers, virus-spreaders and Apple, like Microsoft, has to run like hell just to stay in place. What would you prefer them to do? If they know there's a security hole and know how to fix it, exactly how ethical would it be to delay the release of a fixih unto the release of Tiger rather than putting out a patch right now? ANONYMOUS or perhaps we're right in thinking that not only is quality control on the hardware slipping, with Tiger round the corner quality control is also slipping on 10.3.x patches. Hopefully it's because they're working hard on getting 10.3.9 or 10.4 right. If my machine works fine before a service pack, and stops after applying it - it's the delta that broke it... which means it wasn't built right. If this was a WinXP security update and it broken IE on even a small percentage of machines you'd expect MS to get slammed. Why should Apple be immune from taking the blame for shoddy development work ? (Version 2005-003)

TONY AGUILA To those having problems with Safari, try clearing your internet cache. I used Cocktail to do this, but similar utilities like Xupport or Onyx will probably do the same. In fact, I cleaned my system and user caches as well, breaking some of my dock items links in the process. After a log-out/log-in, Safari was working again. (Version 2005-003)

ANONYMOUS Ran 'software update' and updated security. After restart, when I get to the finder, it automatically relaunches finder every 5 seconds. I sat and waited for it to be 'normal' again, it just kept relaunching the finder.
