GEORGE PAPHITIS  It is 1:55 PST and MU Menu is not updating either by manual or periodic setting. I concur with Archmission something is a miss since yesterday when I first noticed it. I am using OS 10.4.11 on an early Intel iMac.

ARCHMISSION  Oops, I meant 30 minute updates. It has not updated throughout the day and even when I manually update it, it does not update.

FYI, Desktop does not seem to be updating the communities either. Could this be a web access issue? While not connected, maybe something is similar. Just speculating.

It only updates when I shutdown MUMenu and restart it. Beyond that, it will not update anymore.

I have been on Snow Leopard since it came out so this did not seem to be an issue with SL.

JOEL MUELLER  Desktop 5 and MUMenu aren't connected in anyway. None of the resources are shared between the two solutions. I'm currently running MUMenu and Desktop 5 on my Mac without issues.

My guess is that you see MacUpdate Desktop 5 as the top listing and aren't noticing that the new releases are being updated below the top sponsored listing.

ACCOUNTCLOSED  Same here, Joel. It's not that the top item (MacUpdate Desktop 5.0) is keeping itself at the top of the list, giving the impression that the list isn't updating. The entire MUMenu list has fallen well behind the updates showing on the MU site. In other words, it isn't updating. Glad you aren't having issues with this, but a number of users suddenly are. Please look into the problem further.

Have looked in the app's package contents, system preferences folder, library/application support—the developer must have wanted to hide the hell out of these things. Anybody? Thanks.

LARRYMCJ  What a great tool...and where in the hell has it been all my (Mac) life! I have been using a MacUpdate RSS feed, then pouring over 50-100 articles a day searching for any that I have installed, so I can update the.

With MUMenu all my work is done for me...I see the application icon standing out on the list of updated apps it provides (on my timetable) and I can launch the app and do an update This process occurs much quicker than if I wait for the app to do its own update as I might not use in daily.

Users loyal enough to have installed MUMenu deserve an update posted on the MU home page, IMO. Patience while techies fix a problem is one thing; patience in the dark is something else.

TOMDOHERTY  Yes, the 'Can't parse' problem appears to be resolved, but another little issue seems to have arisen. My MU Menu failed to update throughout this past weekend. Updating has resumed since yesterday (Monday) but at most irregular intervals. I've mine set to auto update every 30 minutes and over the years there's almost never been a time when there was not something new ...even when I chose 'Update Now' between scheduled intervals. In the past 12 hours it has auto updated only twice and 'Update Now' reveals nothing new ever time I chose it ...very strange indeed.

However, I have a little problem: I just upgraded to version 2.1.2 from the previous version and now the icon is in a different place in the menu bar. One is supposed to hold down the Command key and drag icons in the menu bar to rearrange them, but that does not work with MUMenu. Is there another way to move the icon in a different place on the menu bar?

MACUPDATE ADMIN  Sorry to get back to you so late. MUMenu is not a true menubar item such as Apple makes, so it can't be moved in the same way as an Apple menubar item. But you can try quitting MUMenu, then delete the MUMenu .plist (preferences) file, it is named:

com.macupdate.mumenu.plist

Then relaunch MUMenu... Maybe that will make it appear in a different/preferable location.

PMCARRION  There's a hidden shortcut in MUmenu.

Whenever I have it running and press F7 at any time, it opens a browser window that links to a download page at MacUpdate.

Yesterday was RealCADD and it was automatically downloaded, and today is Desktop Manager but it only shows the information page.

How can I disable this? This should be documented, I thought there was a virus or spyware in my Mac.

PSEUDOPROMETHEUS  I think ProgramHappy's idea is a pretty good one ... after all, having filtered results would help to give the app a generally slimmer and more cleaner-looking appearance. Simplicity after all, is frequently one of Mac software's known advantages.

Plus, just because there's a widget that does the same thing, it doesn't mean nobody's interested in a menu app like this one.

If iSafari is open already every thing works properly. If I set my default browser to Camino or Firefox everything works properly whether opened or closed.

Interestingly enough when I went to reply to your last comment from Mail and clicked on the reply link in your comment, Safari wouldn't open but Camino did open to the reply page.

This could be a Safari issue but I was just trying to pass along my experience. It seemed others were having the same isssue.

PINK PANTHER  Longer List Please!

I love this handy MUmenu. Elegant and very useful. I would encourage the developer though to make the list of new applications longer, or even better, to allow the user to control the list length via the preferences.

Another suggestion is to color the licenses (e.g. free - blue, shareware - yellow, demo - red). Coloring the text in the opened menu (for such an option, see for example 'high priority') would make Mumenu more attractive/pleasing to the eye.

Not sure what causes the MUMenu menu update problems -- a MacUpdate server configuraton? -- but an email to Joel @ Macupdate always resulted in it behaving again.

MARKUS  Now using this version for a day, I must say that the old one was better. Ok, it has less configuration possibilities but it's not so obstrusive as the rectent one.

I do also miss the possibility to check for a program , which's name I have in the clipboard, with just one click!

Though I like the new menu bar icons, I think the MacUpdate arrow would be visually more pleasing, if it would show the complete MacUpdate logo (with the "m"). So why not make the menuicons space just a little wider, so it would also be easier to reach and open!

COLIN  Great app.

A couple of days after downloading 2.1.1 I ran into a problem.

When I click on the icon in the menu bar it doesn't come down.

I had no problems with the previous versions and this one was running fine before.

I don't know what's gone wrong?

Is this because it is in the menu bar?

GEORGE PAPHITIS  Tried using MUMenu 2.1.1 on my G4 Yikes with OS 10.2.8 but I ran into the following problems:

1) Quits unexpectedly at times

2) Not running when computer awakes from sleep

3) Preferences don't stick after restarts, or relaunching of the application

For me I had to revert back to v. 1.2 Fortunately I had an archived copy since it is no longer available from MacUpdate.

Also for me, and 4% of the other males out there with red/green problems, the red font to indicate a highlighted item (instead of the dash as in v.1.2) is very hard to distiguish from the black.

SIFT  I'm running an EMac 1ghz 768MB Ram on 10.3.4 & I have had no problems with MUMenu 2.1.1. I find it convenient & kind of fun, because I am coming across interesting software I may not have considered testing.

I have two suggestions, I could not cmd-drag the icon to rearrange my drop menus. It would be nice to move, although I would continue using it as is. What I think would also be a great feature is an option to arrange the menu by software category & perhaps optional color coding of license type.

I hope we see some interesting stuff approaching.

SKAB  There are proper Menu Extras and there's crap. This one is no Menu Extra.

It's simply unusable. You can't move it in the menu bar, it doesn't get loaded automatically by the SystemUIServer, short, it's crap. And now don't come with "custom Menu Extras are not supported by Apple", there are tons of Menu Extras out there and they are working just fine.

Would be ok for a first version, but as a replacement for V1, which already *was* a real Menu Extra, this is just inacceptable.

The person does not know the difference between an application for the menubar (which MUMenu now is) and a menu extra (which is not an application).

There are lots and lots of APPLICATIONS for the menubar and I use a few of them. WHAT A SURPRISE that they can not be command-dragged to where you want them! THEY ARE NOT DESIGNED TO HAVE THIS CAPABILITY and futhermore can NOT have this capability. What you can do with APPLICATIONS for the menubar is arrange their order in System Preferences > Accounts > Startup Items in the order that you want them to appear in your menubar. ANONYMOUS  This is more of a question than a comment... I know that MUMenu shows the icons of apps that you already have, so you know to update them. However, one of the apps I have on my computer just has a generic application icon. I had given it a custom icon just so it doesn't look boring. When I saw an update for it in MUMenu, neither the custom nor the generic icon showed up, but looked the same as the "blank page" icons for every other app listed.

So I guess my question is, how exactly is this icon thingie supposed to work? It obviously knows what apps I have in my applications folder, but does it check those icons against the icons that originally come with updated apps? Did my giving the app a custom icon screw it up?

SJK  Works nicely, thanks! Two things:

Item icons are usually missing. For example, only the one for this MUMenu is displayed.

Might be helpful saving a day's worth of item history. Or maybe a way to tell when items have "fallen off the bottom" of the list without being seen since the last time the menu was accessed? Or mark newly added items since the menu was last accessed? Whatever helps make it easier to know when to visit the macupdate.com home page to check for items that weren't seen with MUMenu because they were replaced by newer ones.

Well, it would have been for me...

What strikes me even more, is that the "more info" submenu doesn't raise MacUpdate's "More info" page ;-)

Really, I thought there was a bug, and that obviously the (i) menu was to MU info page as well as the 'more info' was to the more info page.

I understand the fear that a beginner user may not select the short descr. menu (at least initially) but, really, how long du you expect him not to try?

As for dragging menu items, it seems to be a big issue that has been touched on at least 4-times in replies to other people posting about it. But I'll answer it yet again.

Basically, MUMenu went from a NSMenuExtra which required the Unsanity Menu Extra Enabler system patch, to a new and more flexible NSStatusItem. The new format is more of an application that you can "quit" and doesn't support command-dragging like real menu items do (which Apple blocked people from using since Mac OS X 10.2).

Aug 19 2004

HANNA  Or at least make it more apparent what the license is because right now it's *much* harder to see than the old MUMenu, which makes me want to keep using the old MUMenu, but I would rather not eat up so much of your bandwidth and I do like the other features....

Maybe add in parenthesis after the application name (Demo) or (Free) or (Share) or (Update) or whatever, or color code the names (and let us pick our own colors, maybe?) as they appear in the list.

Hopefully these suggestions will help.

I love the new application. With a few tweaks, it can be totally amazing!

Thank you for providing such an essential piece of software and being a far, far better place than VersionTracker... even better than what VersionTracker was before they sold out to ZDNet or whoever they sold out to and became virtually unusable for me.

Love,

Hanna

ANONYMOUS  MU menu goes invisible. I know I've read about this problem, but I cannot remember where. I always have this dandy little utility in my menu bar and have it installed in several useer spaces on Jaguar. The problem is that the icon no longer apears in the menu bar in one useer space. The app. is there and works fine but is not visible. I tried pulling it off the menu bar and typing 'killall SystemUIServer' into Terminal and then clicking on the MuMenu.menu, but still no icon. What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

MU ADMIN  The problem is definitely at your end, the MUMenu continues to work perfectly here. (OS X 10.3.3)

Try repairing your permissions (use Apple's Disk Utility) and rebuild your desktop (use RebuildDesktopX, here on MacUpdate)... If that doesn't fix it, then you likely need to use a utility to delete system caches, there are many software utilities to do that, OnyX is a free one.

1) We don't think it's much of a security risk to have your clipboard contents displayed in the menu. It's about non-secure as someone sitting down and hitting "PASTE" in any application.

GORDON BYRNES  webgod: Actually, the lack of understanding of how menu extras work on Jaguar is on your end. Apple no longer allows third-party menu extras to work in Jaguar (with the exception of those loaded by prefpanes). Developers must use the inferior status item (doesn't automatically load at login, and not command-draggable) or use a hack programme like menu extra enabler to enable standard menu extra functionality. Personally, i'd rather use a simple hack programme and retain full menu extra functionality.

Aside from that this site is far far better than VT who try to set a billion cookies and attempt to track me instead. They give me the creeps. The reviews and reviewers are nasty, political and they allow developers to rate their own software. That site loads too slow, sometimes not at all. I would like to see a MacOS X version only in the dock for this site and thanks for such a user-friendly and fast updating site. No more VT for me.

There seems to be this epidemic of stuff out now for the menu bar, but developers don't realise that the menu bar is finite and has to compete with application menu items.

Anyway, this one gets my thumbs up :-) The only thing I found lacking was in features like more advanced preferences.

One thing I wish the menu did was put a bar that separates each day's updates, so if you see Friday and Saturday's updates in the menu, there is a "---" separating them, like so:

Saturday, September 28, 2002:

***..

ENERGY52  Displays nothing in the menu. It probably doesn't support proxies (just like the usanity installer version checking) which makes it useless for cable users etc.

For the IE Launching: If you use an other browser and update it (replace the file with a newer copy), it isn't selected anymore in the osx internet prefs (even with the same name in the same location)

DAELEY  Cool idea. Two things need fixing: the icon (which others have already pointed out) and the fact that it launches Internet Explorer instead of my specified browser in System Preferences. Bad form.

GWENHIVER  Great thing… It actually made me switch from VersionTracker… ;-)

As others have already stated, you could 1) improve the icon and 2) add preferences for i) the number of updates displayed ii) the possibility to fetch OS X updates only.

MACATTACK  Cool!! Macupdate has always been great and a lot better than versiontracker. This menu makes it just as good as versiontracker membership stuff except for its ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!

JACKSIM  Oh, and I forgot...

It would be great is we could specify an auto-update interval. And some preferences to choose the number of updates to display, and stuff like that. Ok, I know, it's only version 1.0.

The menu icon kinda sucks, by the way. It looks like System 7.0 :-/
