ILGAZ You should never use 'sudo` for fink. Fink automatically asks your admin password if it needs it. Also you can use fink rebuild fink, fink reinstall fink to reinstall it. fink index -f will force the re-indexing which takes care of what is installed or not (including system gcc) Their community and developers are particularly helpful, you should go to irc://irc.freenode.net/#fink for help. NADEEMF I keep downloading this when really I should be updating using instructions at http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/upgrade.php. Also the link provided by MacUpdate currently only links to the PPC version. The intel one is at http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/fink/Fink-0.8.1-Intel-Installer.dmg?download (Version 0.8.1)

APPLECRYPT MODS fink is fantastic and opens up a whole new world. I've only just discovered all this and i've got gimp plus some office applications open on my KDE Desktop :D Good stuff! Thank you to all the fink developers and all that help and support. Brilliant job - my thanks and respect. (Version 0.8.0)

ANONYMOUS I don't understand why people write reviews when they don't know what they're talking about. Fink does install from sources - not just binaries. Depending on your machine, installing from source can take a long time, and can chew up a lot of drive space in the mean time. Installing from source will never be as simple as installing a binary, because compilation depends upon a lot of factors - libraries, headers, etc. Fink goes a long way to making it simple, though. ANONYMOUS A great idea except that it can't install from sources, only outdated binaries, making it useless. I don't understant why these developer spend hours creating good free software... no common user can use. It seems these Linux/Unix guys don't want people using their applications. Can't they make a decent installer? It is easier to use these applications on a PC (SUSE, Mandrake) than on OS X or on a Linux distro for PPC. (Version 0.7.1)

RICH It's very easy to use (for example) Gimp on Windows... until it refuses to work. And then what? How do you recompile it? Fink doesn't just make it easy to compile & install pacakges optimized for your personal system, it makes it virtually guaranteed that you're getting the latest (yes: latest) working version. Of course, if you want to switch to unstable sources, that's up to you... Don't talk about something you know nothing about. (Version 0.7.1)

ANONYMOUS Reviewer is clueless. Fink DOES allow you to install from sources, from either a stable or unstable tree. (Version 0.7.1)

ANONYMOUS Can't install the last version of scribus, Fink says: Can't resolve dependency "gcc3.1" for package "xfree86-4.4.0-13"

ANONYMOUS I had the same problem. Obtain XCode and look in the packages folder. There you will find the gcc3.1.pkg. Install this and fink will no longer complain. (Version 0.7.1)

X Amazing utility, very easy to use with FinkCommander. Stable in OS 10,3,5. Now it is easy to use great Linux apps like Scribus or xscorch ;-) Once again OS X rules, with the very best of Mac / Linux / Windows. (Version 0.7.1)

ANONYMOUS Great product, opens the door to a fantastic array of software. In my case with Evolution I can access Microsoft Exchange on my Mac. To make it easier try loading FinkCommander which adds a handy GUI interface http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/8128 (Version 0.7.1)

BRIAN KENDIG A simple way to get useful software, but it's poorly documented, and there's no way to change the directory it uses from the weird nonstandard "/sw" to an appropriate place like "/usr/local/fink". (Version 0.7.0)

ANONYMOUS Obviously you have not read the documentation which is plentyfull and on http://fink.sf.net/. Of course you can install Fink under a different prefix but it is not recommended. The FAQ explains very well why it is under /sw and not in the wrong place, like /usr/local/foo. If you plan to install it in a standard palce you should put it into /opt/fink (Version 0.7.0)

HELPLESS POWER USER Is there a SIMPLE tutorial for this? Even the FAQ goes over my head I'm afraid. I installed a 0.5.x version, and am not sure how to safely install 0.6.1. I'm running 10.2.8 and would like to try GIMP. Do I need developer tools for this? (Version 0.6.1)

LARRY The developer tools are not required unless you want to build packages from source. If all you want to do is install binaries (pre-built applications - and that works for most people), Fink Commander will get you there. (Version 0.7.0)
| Apr 4 2004 |
ANONYMOUS Besides, if you are interested in gimp you don't need fink, you just need to install apple's X11 (or the preview if you are using 10.2.x, and gimp has a binary for mac os x. (Version 0.7.0)

ANONYMOUS If you already have fink installed you should NOT use this installer (this is mentioned in the docs.) In FinkCommander, choose Update Descriptions from the Binary menu, then install the fink package to upgrade. http://fink.sourceforge.net/download/ has more info on upgrading an existing fink installation. SHELDON HAYNIE This utility is very powerful for managing unix or linux program installations. It does expect that the environment be clean, I did have some issues from manually built packages that left some GNU tools in the path, but once that was rectified it just runs. Well supported on a mail list (Version 0.5.2)

GRIGIO60 Anonymous, you are giving a very low rating just because a couple of utility features do not work yet. I guess you should evaluate the package for its main purpose, i.e. giving easy porting of Open Source under Mac OS X. And this is done well and efficiently. Should be marked as "red" in the MacUpdate listing!!!! (Version 0.5.0a)

ANONYMOUS they call it a final release but they should call it what it really is: alpha. "fink selfupdate" doesn't work, and the download doesn't work either. (Version 0.5.0a)
