B3NT  The WeatherPop/Glu website seems to have been taken down now. That's good if they are no longer going to support they shouldn't sell. The closest replacement I've found is 'Meteo', a free and open-source utility. It's not as straight-forward and user-friendly as Weatherpop was. I miss the old Weatherpop menubar icon pop-down that showed all the local data with one click, and in its latest revision even showed a local radar image in the pop-down. It was great.

If anybody finds anything better, or close, I'd like to hear about it.

Bright Blessings,

Kendall Hallett

TANKKNIGHT  I really loved this app and really hate that the developer has stopped supporting it. It no longer displays the correct info and ever since I switched to Leopard my logs would several error lines when Weather Pop would call out for data. Features, Ease of Use and Value I rate as a 4, but Stability and Main Rating I have to give a 1. It's a real shame when developers run off.

B3NT  The WeatherPop developers, Ben and Lisa, claim a hacking of their work and loss of historical data. WeatherPop used to be an EXCELLENT utility with frequent version updates and response to weather data source glitches. Unfortunately, it has not been updated since at least Dec. 2007 according to their own website, and has ceased to be a useful utility because it no longer seems able to obtain weather data from, particularly, weather.gov. It used to be a great little utility but I no longer use it because it is so unreliable as to be easier to look out the window or go the weather.gov website myself for data. I do hope it will return to its former glory, but at this point I am rapidly becoming doubtful. I can not recommend it.

PMALOS  WeatherPop is really buggy, and the developer does not answer emails. Bugs I've found so far, in just a few days use... 1) Didn't automatically register after I paid, 2) Weather details not accurately downloaded from source, 3) Weather source preferences do not work, 4)Frequent crashes & freezes. Sorry to pick on a small developer, but this app should be avoided.

DANA SUTTON  There's a to like about WeatherPop, it's very slick and informative. There's only one problem with it, which makes it totally useless for me. Any weather-reporting software is only as good as the sources it polls, and the one source it uses for my town (Wunderground, no matter how I set the Preferences, and I live in a reasonably large near-metropolitan area) gives wildly inaccurate readings. Right now it's in the high 40's outside (and this is reported fairly accurately by the Weather widget, bearing in mind the nearest reporting station is a few miles from here in a different microclimate), but WeatherPop tells me it's 38.

ANONYMOUS  I'm having the same problems as others. The data in the application has become inconsistent to the point of being unuseable.

I've been using this app for so long I can't remember and I love it, but in the last month or so it's gone downhill and I've had to stop using it. I checked out the developers site and needless to say I don't think it belongs to the developers anymore. Either that or they've decided to go in a completely different direction. :(

I've just been checking out an app called weatherdock that seems to be like weatherpop on steroids. Plus it's free. The only problem is in addition to the menu (which can display all sorts of weather data), it is an application and must be launched at startup and therefore takes up valuable dock realestate. Am open to other suggestions.

TERRY  I have had this program for some time, and it simply is inconsistent to the point of being worthless. Data is constantly displayed incorrectly, particularly from weather.gov. Complaints to the developer have gone unresolved. I have switched to Meteorologist, a free program using (in my estimation) the more accurate data from The Weather Channel site, and it has been performing well.

ILGAZ  I use and support macupdate since its mac focused site so I check here everyday for my licensed sw updates and see whats going on in sw scene.

After reading the clueless and amazing misinformation spread about weatherpop by meteorologist fans for days, I gave up taking ANY comments about ANY SOFTWARE serious on this site/others.

I bet the good guys offering meteorologist free wouldn't be happy to see this kind of support(!) they get.

Its a $8 trial software sits at your menu, installed by drag and drop. Try it one time if there is anyone taking those "reviews" serious. You will understand what I mean.

To support opensource/freeware software if you aren't developer:

1) Donate to it, even its not stated anywhere

2) Help the new users in forums, mail lists

3) Advertise it but NOT BY SPREADING WRONG INFORMATION ABOUT COMPETING PRODUCTS

ANONYMOUS  Ilgaz, you're obviously a WeatherPop fanboy. You paid your $8 probably before realizing that there were two menu alternatives:

-Meteorologist, Free

-WeatherMenu, $5

I've tried all three, and WeatherMenu reigns supreme.

People reading the reviews here can, luckily, try WeatherPop and then move on to WeatherMenu and Meteorologist before making a decision. Odds are they'll pass on this overpriced and underdeveloped piece of work.

ILGAZ  I use commercial applications which are professionally coded and supported.

This applies to every software I use. I use Omniweb over Firefox, Eudora over Thunderbird etc etc.

I don't go to the applications pages you refer and spread misinformation like some others here.

I say, thing runs for 1 year on my mac. Its at startup, I never quit it, it didn't crash or do other things people say about.

This new way of supporting the other applications bothers me. About me? I remember installing/using WeatherDock on GNU Windowmaker in 1996 on a SGI system.

I liked the application and selected it over other ones since it featured a screensaver that time. Thanks to CPU cry-babies, it has been removed from application for now.

DARREN  I bought WP as it was the first menu-based weather app I found on the Mac a few years back. Looked for something as good as WeatherBug on the PC.

While back then it was decent for a Mac app, today it is, by far, at the bottom of the stack in terms of weather menu apps. Compare it to WeatherDock, WeatherMenu and Meteorologist.

The most frequently updated app seems to be Meteorologist, and I like it a lot. WeatherMenu has been my choice, tho (also paid for it) for some time. The new kid on the block, WeatherDock, is sweet, but lacking in a few features. But I would rank it above WeatherPop, for sure.

I'm also on the WeatherPop Yahoo! group. It is quite sad to see an app that started with so much potential fall so far by the way-side. It pales in comparison to WM and Meteo in terms of the amount of weather information it can display. For the money, there is no equivalent to WM.

And as for frequency of updates ... um, guys, a year? Rather poor for a pay-for app.

If I were starting my search today, I would absolutely not bother with this application unless and until they can bother with more frequent updates and more offerings for the money.

ANONYMOUS  Some people would say that the need to update so often is a bad thing. Based on what my meteorologist using friends tell me, it has to be updated often, because it breaks often.

DARREN  To Ilgaz:

Are you responding to my comment/mini-review? Your comments need to be clearer. So I'll respond to what it seems you're saying.

First, I'm not offering support. I'm offering my OPINION of the product. I PAID for the product in question. Developers read comments on sites like this. I frequently visit MacUpdate, not developer forums. The Yahoo! groups list is not the best place, IMHO to offer feedback of all sorts. Lots of people read this site, including other developers. So I'm hoping to incite them to a better product publicly, not in a members-only forum.

Second, WeatherPop is not open source, it is shareware. I paid for it. I'm not happy with the development (and length of time to fix problems) of it since I paid for it.

I'm sure Ben and Lisa are quite busy with the other things they do, but they need to realize that the cars that were in their rear-view mirror have passed them. If they never intend to make WP as full-featured as the others, that's fine. Say so. In the mean time, the comparison of WP vs. the others is quite valid.

The bottom line is that feature for feature, WeatherPop has been surpassed by the likes of WeatherMenu, Meteorologist and WeatherDock (iffy on that one).

I supported WP by buying their product. IMHO, they need to bring the feature-set at least to the same level as the others in order to charge what they do. Granted, I don't have to buy it if I don't want to. So with that logic, they could charge $100 for it and someone might buy it, I suppose.

I supported WeatherMenu by buying their product. Haven't donated to Meteorologist yet as I'm not using the product all the time.

FWIW, it's nice that WP has updated from 2.0.2 to 2.0.3 in one day. So consider my "they haven't updated..." comment revised.

Suggestion to the Developers: If you want to put WP way over the top, hook up with the WeatherBug folks for "up-to-the-minute" weather changes. They say a Mac version is under consideration, meaning, "we're making so much money with Windows, we'll think about the Mac (and Linux) after we finish our Krispy Kreme's."

Well, there's potential opportunity knocking ... maybe. Of course, they're $20/year for their service. I'd rather pay $8.

ILGAZ  I urge mac users using windows too to stay away from WeatherBug and ANY mac developer to stay away from producer of Weatherbug.

A simple search of weatherbug and spyware will explain my concerns.

I bet they don'T install gator as they used to since people are more aware about the s p y w a r e issue than 2 years before but it doesn't change they had means to do it.

OK this was warning part.

After seeing the "supporters' and "user profile" of the opensource tool, I am more glad I purchased weatherpop as a newbie mac user a year ago.

My Mac G5 is 1 years, 3 months old and weatherpop is at my startup since then. I had 2 kernel crashes to this time but never weatherpop crashes/related problems. So sorry if I as a end user get frustrated about the amazing, meaningless comments and false information on this "comment" zone.

I am also SURE that the nice guys offering the meteorologist for free AND opensource aren't happy with such "support" they get. I am also sorry now I got kinda "pre minded" of that product after reading comments.

I purchased "earthbrowser" too recently. It wasn'T updated for months or something while I was buying and it got updated.

I don't have a single clue how could a weather monitor app must be updated. Like, new conditions happen because of global warming? :)

ANONYMOUS  I've been researching ALL available OS X weather apps and I'll have to say the three that impressed me are Meteorologist, weatherpop, and weatherdock. Of the three I found the first two to be the best in terms of: a) ease of use [here weatherpop is slightly better) b) features (here Weatherpop and met are about equal) c) appearance (here weatherpop seems a bit prettier--its menubar icon is in color and it changes according to am or pm which is nice, met's is not colored, and its in-dock icon is poor looking), d) ability to stay visible (here met is CLEARLY the winner with its dock feature which weatheropo DOES NOT HAVE--exactly opposite of what a review I just read reported--although weatherdock also ha the ability to show a floating window above all apps but the window face is garish) e) cost (here met and weatherdock clearly win out because they are full featured and free, weatherpop is not--even if its only $8) f) reliability (I've tested weatherpop the most extensively of all the apps, and its been robust, although the met version [1.4.3] I'm currently using seems to be pretty trouble free.

So, which one would I choose? I'm currently torn between Met (it is full featured and free) and weatherpop (its basically nicer looking but for a shareware app asks for money). I guess for the moment I'll stay with Met but if my longing for the changing colored menubar icon of weatherpop grows on me, I'll buy their product.

ELROT   I bought Weatherpop a couple of years ago, before Meteoroligist existed. I have never, ever had a significant problem. On a couple of occassions (maybe twice), the icon disappeared, but came back when I clicked it. No crashes; always accurate and reliable, as it can access multiple weather reports. I have friends who use the free competition, and regularly complain about problems. Unlike them, I only check here for updates, occassionally, not ecause there are problems, but in case there are new features. When I think about it, I'm not sure how this could be improved.

ANONYMOUS  Seems like a pretty slick little program until you find that it often reports random data. Worse, the websites from which it supposedly takes forecasts (weather.gov, wunderground.com, usatoday.com) are displaying CORRECT info which is somehow getting screwed up by weatherpop. If this program had one RELIABLE data stream, it would be quite good. And aside from occasional maddening inaccuracy, it's well-designed and useful.

NOBODY  This is a great idea, and a fun, nonobtrusive addition to your computer. I've been extending my trial period for a long, long time (money's tight), but I finally paid for it today. They deserve the money. But I'm docking one star in value because the free version should have color icons. Making you pay extra just for color is so 1980s computing. Overall, excellent program.

ANONYMOUS  Works great, and thank goodness you can keep the "classic" icons if you so desire (I do, you may not). Stability has been much better than Meteo, which tends to spontaneously quit every few days, and continues to have problems parsing weather.com. The only feature I'd love to see here is if WeatherPop could show the local weather radar as Meteo can. Really helps to see what's headed your way.

RUDE.BOY  this is a great product. the weather reports are accurate, up to date (it would be nice to have a manual "refresh" option, or perhaps i just can't find it), and it looks good too. meteorologist is no longer maintained, and was flaky at best on my machine. weather pop advance seems well worth the registration fee for me.

MACDONATE  WeatherPop works for Singapore, and even for different areas! It's remarkable how the desktop weather icon matches the real weather outside.

The Advance version is definitely worth the US$8 since all the preference options would be unlocked, and all weather icons are in color, which are noticeable when the sun and moon icons are active.

Kudos to the developers for allowing a 14-day trial period to test the Advance version, and the option to keep it at the Free version after that.

ESCHER  WeatherPop Advance 1.8 brings additional improvements to the user interface. I think it's great that the menu icon now reflects download/update activity and a lack of updates when there is no 'Net connection. WeatherPop is still my favorite weather app and still worth the $8 I paid for it.

DONPABLO21  A great program that does everything I want it to -- the advance forecast, the ability to monitor different cities, the customizable display of current conditions, and the recent addition of the "feels like" temperature. MOUNTAINLION  Neat little app with a good interface and many features. It could use, at this version, a few more features such as the "% chance of rain" instead of just "rainy." Wind chill/heat index, and UV rays would also be useful. Moonrise/set would help those of us who are athletic after sunset: hikers, mountain bikers, joggers, sailors (you don't race a mountain bike downhill in total darkness). And believe it or not, showing true midday would help teachers show students how to navigate out doors by the sun. The sun at true midday is due south.
