AMAVIDA  Is this really necessary these days?

I bought this app way back in the dark ages of Mac OS X because people said it was soooooo good but I have never in all the versions of Mac OS X from 10.0.0 to 10.5.7 needed to use it....

The only common thread I see in the comments is a particular older HP printer has a crap driver but nothing else.

If somebody say's to me that a wipe/clean install did'nt fix their print problem it screams buggy driver to me. The logical solution is to get updated drivers from HP.

To be honest Apple has done a good job of updating & improving the CUPS printing system in Mac OS.

Once a year someone posts a glowing review of this software here on Macupdate which suggests to me very very few people need it or astroturfing...

CRIQ  Print Therapy fixed my problem. I use an HP LaserJet P1006. I use it both in OS X and Win XP through VMWare Fusion on my MacBook. Looks like Fusion (or XP...) doesn't "free" the printer when closed. So couldn't print in OS X, though printer was visible in PrefPane. Could print from my wife's iMac though. I ran Print Therapy (after carefully reading online docs). Everthing is OK now. I've registered the software. Thanks to the developer.

XYPHER  One of the only apps I've ever considered worth paying for. I had many Printing Presets which were jacked up. After running this program everything is back to normal. An extremely thorough tool which operates without hiccups. It even told me what files I had missing. The repair options are fantastic. Thanks to the developer John Goodchild. I recommend this unreservedly.

ALABEMOS  Actually I used version 1.4.2 on my mac which is now running 10.4.7. At the time I wasn't aware there were later versions. That version worked for me; your mileage may vary.

I had spent over six hours doing all the regular things, permissions repairs, uninstalls, reinstalls--even had done a clean install of my system, and still could not get my new HP all-in-one printer going. I googled and googled, and did just about everything suggested. Nothing. I called HP, and after some discussion, they gave me the sad news (and they were correct) that it was a mac problem, not an HP problem. I googled around a little more.

Voila! Enter Printer Setup Repair. Wow! In just fifteen minutes, everything was fixed! This program is worth its weight in gold.

By the way, do READ THE READ ME. I'd say it is essential for most of us.

I registered the software. I definitely want to support this developer.

LEOOFBORG  I bought this because earlier iterations saved my butt. There are a few burps / questions I have for the author so I will take those to email.

The author is open to version the software any way they see fit. If they stream a fix but no new features you may just see a date change or a build number after the version in 'Get Info'. This is standard operating procedure.

Concerning the pirate users below? You get what you deserve. Barring that, you are very ignorant of Unix. You -can- unintentionally wipe directories, give bad permissions, etc if you have a low enough user id or use sudo. What's the difference between

sudo rm -Rf ~/Users/name/Library/Caches/*

and

sudo rm -Rf ~/Users/name/Library/*

..you'll find out really quick, ScriptPuppy. I hope you back up.

I have seen a lot of bugs, and a lot of shellscript based applications. I have blown up a few directories in my time and have had to restore from backup. Sorry, but you are WRONG.

Finally, if you pirated the software you did NOT enter into a contract with the developer. Go ahead and TRY and sue him for your data loss. Courts in the EU and North America will laugh at you.

Finally, you may read this blog entry about how I feel about whiners and script kiddies.

If you found a bug, email the author. If you didn't pay for the product [yet] then expect to be thrown lower in the queue under the customers. And if this program is useful -pay- for it.

Recommendation to the author: 14 day trial, or 'number of uses' trial [5-10 uses].

SMTIPS  Well I thought this program was supposed to fix problems. I used it to do a complete reset, told it to make a backup file etc, then I went out of town for awhile with my printer issues unresolved. I was going to make another attempt, but the program has "expired" leaving me with no way to use it without buying it. Sorry, you don't get my money...now I am having major headaches with the other printer I got because evidently your little "reset" damaged or removed some files needed for printing...can't even run the Printer Utility to clean and align cartridges, apparently because some vital files were removed that can't be restored without BUYING your stupid app. Well your "demo" messed things up worse than if I had been frogging around removing files manually. Thanks for the JUNK.

DO NOT BUY THIS PROGRAM.

FIXAMAC SOFTWARE, INC.  Thank you for your continued comments. I'm sorry you feel that we intentionally deleted files from computers. This is not the case. An unfortunate error resulted in some data loss for a few individuals who prefer to steal software rather than pay for it. Regardless, we did not intend the damage and the problem was resolved as soon as it was brought to our attention. We did not release a new version as the error needed to be resloved extremely quickly and PSR 5.0.4 was already close to being released. We have delayed the release to thoroughly examine our source code to make sure that no other errors of this nature can possibly exist. PSR 5.0.4 will be released very shortly.

If you would like to discuss this matter further, you may email me directly as I do not often visit MacUpdate:

MOCENIGO  Frankly, I do not believe you at all. It is VERY difficult to write a "typographical" mistake in the code so that instead of a single file a whole directory is wiped - recursively in subdirectories, even!

Furthermore, is there any reason for deleting the older preferences file for your application if a pirated serial code is entered? I see no logical motivation for that, it does not prevent *anything* (except, perhaps, to break older and maybe legally acquired versions of the software).

In my opinion, it is too evident that your intention has been to delete everything.

I find it astonishing that you are replacing the old version with a version with the *same* version number (5.0.3) - a clumsy attempt to "cover" your misbehaviour? Why are you not releasing it under a different version number? If this was REALLY a bug, fixing it would have guaranteed a different version number. By rereleasing it under the same version number I believe you are trying to "erase" the "buggy" version, not just to replace or update it...

You are perfectly aware that your behaviour could easily be defined as criminal (independently from the criminal behaviour of using pirated codes) and that in many cases you could be held liable of considerable damages (you know, as you state in your disclaimers, that some disclaimers do not hold). I see no way you can prove the opposite.

FIXAMAC SOFTWARE, INC.  We recently discovered a bug in Printer Setup Repair 5.0.3 that causes a problem in the code section that handles and rejects pirated registration codes. Our original objective was to delete the Printer Setup Repair preferences if a pirated code was entered but a typographical error in the code allowed the entire user preferences folder to be erased instead. This would only occur if a pirated code was used. There was no such error found in the area that handles legitimate registration codes. We have fixed the problem and posted an update.

This was not a malicious act on our part, rather an effort to protect our product from software pirates, and we regret any damage that may have been caused by the use of pirated registration codes.

Anyone who downloaded Printer Setup Repair 5.0.3 between 11-05-05 and 12-06-05 should download the current release (version 5.0.3) from our web site

MOCENIGO  Printer Setup Repair 5.0.3 indeed erases the contents of the Preferences folder if a pirated key is used. While there is no excuse for using pirated keys, this kind of response is absolutely criminal. For example, all your mail.app preferences are lost and you suddenly do not see you mail any longer. Furthermore, simply re-creating the coounts may erase your mail by overwriting the mail directories with empty folders. The solution is to move the Library/Mail folder elsewhere, recreate the accounts, then quit Mail.app, move all the contents of the old mailboxes in the new places: at this point you do not see your mail still, and you have to rebuild all the mailboxes from withing mail.app. Then all the mail is

recovered.

This is not the correct answer to illegal copying. Deleting data from the user's disk drive without the user's consent is a criminal behaviour. There are many ways to scare the user (you can redirect to a webpage stating "Dear USERNAME, currently logged from IP NUMBER, in the area of GEOGRAPHIC AREA,

using OPERATING SYSTEM AND VERSION, pirating software is not only illegal, but also prevents further software to be written by discouraging the author, that spent considerable time and resources bla bla, please click the button down to be lead to the registration page". That should be enough to impress normal people.

From now on I won't download any program from this author. This is a pity for him/her, since recently I started purchasing a lot of legal licenses...

The low markings are then reflect an assessment of the behaviour of the software writer.

JOEL MUELLER  Printer Setup Repair, the widely-used utility for Mac

OS X printers, has taken a malicious approach to

combatting software piracy. With version 5.0.3 for

Mac OS X Tiger, if the user enters a pirated serial

number known to the program, the program will

immediately and without any warning remove all user

preferences and the user keychain, and possibily do

other unknown damage to the user's system.

This heavy-handed response to piracy has been

repeatedly condemned and the legality of such a

practice is doubtful. Just this past November, the

Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Homeland

Security warned Sony-BMG about its DRM technology,

saying "it's your intellectual property, not your

computer."

Printer Setup Repair goes beyond what Sony-BMG did,

intentionally damaging the computer rather than merely

opening it up to exploitation by other trojans.

Legally sanctioning such practice would be equivalent

to giving a merchant the right to burn down the home

of a shoplifter. A Palm OS developer who tried the

same thing in 2000 was sued.

This highly malicious response is ironic and

embarrassing for a software company called "Fixamac,"

whose utility is trusted to repair damage to a Mac OS

X system. The intent to damage user systems must be

treated as equivalent to a trojan or a virus, and must

be condemned and publicized, no matter what one's

opinions may be about software piracy. Paying

customers could also be inadvertently affected if they

were to mistype a serial number.

Fixamac, the developer of Printer Center Repair, is

based in Hollywood, California.

OKAY...I'LL BITE AND DID  I posted the previous comment and with the current version 5.0.1 all my issues are resolved so I purchased a license. It has a seven (7) trial period and literally from the get-go it found a major problem that it fixed. In fact I tuned my entire printing system. It was because of this and the fact the trial allowed me to truly try it out and actually use it functions that I made decision to purchase. The price does seem a little bit steep, but so does lost printing time nightmares (and I've had too many of the me in the past). Oh well, I have a small arsenal of utilities that I find indispensable (Disk Warrior--which isn't cheap either) in order to consistently having a function OS.

ANONYMOUS  Every time I see an update of this tool I wonder what's wrong with Printer Setup. I service 200 Mac's and we never have to repair Printer Setup. So why do we need a tool ? There was only one case where we needed help, and the tool didn't work. I think people need to stay up to date with their systems...

DOUG EDDY  I am going to download it because the I can never get to my jobs when there is a problem. The utility won't let me go there. I have to pull the paper or do something to cause an error before my Epson's come online with the jobs list. I think the problem is with Apple - I DO keep my system up to date and regularly run discwarrior and repair privs and do all the good little things.

MITRA  This didn't work for me, it still won't connect to Windows printers, connecting between Mac/Windows for printing is the single toughest problem with Mac integration into offices, and for a tool like this to be useful it needs to have some diagnosis which includes stuff over the network. For example checking whether the cryptic URL's needed for talking to Windows are OK - (I thought Apple liked simple stuff, why did they make this so tough!.

PB1  Ok, so my Epson 2200 once again wasn't printing and I needed some fast prints. Having noticed that this update came out recently, I came back to MU and downloaded it to give it a try. My Print Center was back up and running in under five minutes. Somehow I had 181 spool files gumming up the works that PCR instantly allowed me to delete! Great interface. Functions as advertised. Thanks!

WIN SHEA  I spent 3 days researching and appllying the fixes from Apple's tech library but they all failed to fix the failure of OS X.1 to add my new Lexmark X83 All-in-One

to the Printer list in the Print Center.

This repair repeated most of Apple's protocols, but far faster and easier. It did not work, but was a great time saver. It also added a new step, removing the Canon printer (which like all the others in the Printer list, were invsible). This did the trick, and broke the logjam.

This software is a delight to use, and a great timesaver, and well worth the $10 shareware fee!
