DB  I have been authoring a large number of DVD's from a variety of video sources using FCP and DVDSP. I have consitently encountered problems with the QT compressor and using Compressor itself. Upon purchasing BV 1.6 I am more than impressed. It always works and is rock solid! I can have 5 versions of it running at the same time on the same machine and go about my daily business using any other programs at the same time. I have encoded about 20 or so 30 min clips with great results. Never any problem. Well worth the price. It is a bit slow, but who cares. I put it on at night and will batch encode 5 or 10 clips at a time and when I get up, they are done. I am running this on a DP 1.8, 2 GB of RAM and 10.4.

G.H. HOVAGIMYAN  I found it to be really good with a clear manual and better than either the quicktime encoder or the dnd studio pro encoder for the Macintosh

GCURNEW  Just ran a test comparing Bitvice 1.5.1 and Compressor (shipped with DVDSP3) running on a dual G5 with 2mb RAM.

First off, Bitvice was noticably slower on my G5...don't know how other folks who claim it's faster are getting those results.

The quality of the compression was flat out horrible...encoding at the same bitrates as Compressor, Bitvice output was soft on all edges, and layered effects that were brought in as backgrounds (footage was shot on green screen and composited) were completely unviewable.

If this were freeware, it would be overpriced...couldn't delete it from my hard drive fast enough...

ANONYMOUS  umm... it says optimised for the G4.

So I guess it's made with the people who can't/haven't upgraded to a G5 processor yet in mind.

ROGER ANDERSSON  Come on now pirates!

If somebody is so shy that she/he cannot even provide a valid email address, then why should we ever want to trust him/her?

Forget it!

ANONYMOUS  When I register to receive the download instruction I get a message that says "Please enter a more valid email address!". I *did* enter a valid email address. If your registration is this lame I can just imagine what your software is like. I'll pass on this one, tyvm.

ANONYMOUS  OK - I finally got a copy of Bitvice (in spite of the website claiming my email address wasn't valid). Tried to encode a small avi file to m2v. At the end of the first pass, it quit, and left me with an .m2v file of zero length. No message, no nuthin. I have to give it zero stars. Just as I figured.

ANONYMOUS  What are you doing encoding a small .avi to MPEG2? This software is the best MPEG2 encoding software for OSX. Usually you use a quicktime compliant file with BitVice such as a DV NTSC 720x480. This would be a resoultion you would encode for DVD (720x480), or even SVCD (480x480). I use BitVice every week, even right as we speak with no problems.

FRANX  You have to provide a valid email address just to get the demo. Okay, so I do that. Now I get it downloaded and the installer hangs without fail. I go to the site to get support but you have to register to even look for support in their forum.

They certainly make it a pain to use their software.

HANK  Does anyone offer an encoding _service_ (online, or a place like Kinko's)?

I'd like to encode -- better than I can with Apple's software -- a few small files. But I'd rather pay to use the software than own it, it's priced for commercial/business users who can make money with it.

(I found I can do little stereo movies successfully with two firewire cameras and EvoCam v3, on the Powerbook; a couple of

ANONYMOUS  This demo version transforms the previous versions of bitvice into demo mode, throughout the whole network.

There is NO WAY BACK to a fully functional version.
