SPLUNK23 I have been living under a rock for a while and my MAME set is only at 0.58
I haven't really been living under a rock, just been into other things. Anyway I am getting back into Emulators again and was wondering, What happened to MacMAME and why? Very sad that it appears to be dead. (Version 0.103u2)

MR.ASH OK, as suggested i've updated all my ROM's (about 120) and still half of them won't run on MacMame 0.103u2. I could live with that issue cause most not running ROM's aren't too good games. But why, please tell my why isn't it possible to configure USB joypads anymore? Without this function most games are absolutly unplayable. Using the Mac keyboard isn't an option either or have you ever tried to play "Metal Slug" with a keyboard? It's impossible. (Version 0.103u2)

D9 Maybe you should get your facts straight before you go shooting off your comments! There's nothing worse than someone who feels so presumptious as to tell another EXACTLY what's wrong with the others system when they don't have the slightest idea! Read the review...same ROMS work on the PC. ROMS were reinstalled with latest versions. Some work, some don't. Missing files in error messages are in zips. Honestly, discuss the facts not your ASSumptions is you're going to be deragatory! (Version 0.103)
| Dec 31 2005 |
THOMAS.SLAYTON Uh, no. Visit Mameworld and you will see that the changes were made to all versions. The MacMAME version is based on the code from MAME. Yes, it has some bugs of its own, but in most cases ROMS that no longer work is NOT one of them. Hey, I have an idea! Why you don't ask for your money back?!?! Oh, that's right you didn't pay for it. Or... Maybe you could code something better. Use it or don't. But don't complain about something that you are getting for free as if you are entitled to it. One last option is to continue complaining and maybe he'll stop doing revisions. Hey, wouldn't that be GREAT!!? (Version 0.103)

D9 Thomas, you're a moron! What do you think this section is for? Ass-kissing developers?! The fact is I am commenting about the software and the fact that it doesn't work on my Mac with ROMS that do work on my PC version, regardless of what the developer has prepared. That is the purpose of the Reviews. I am more than willing to accept any critiques on that subject. You instead use this service to belittle people who disagree with your "little fiefdom" or don't see software usage in the same manner you do. Why don't you take a lesson in civility since you don't code either?! (Version 0.103u1)

MR.ASH Now that's the absolutly worst version of MacMame ever! Half of the ROM's won't work anymore, it's not possible to configure any USB joypads, and for some reasons (no matter what i do) the direction buttons down and right seem to hang, so in every game my character moves to thr lower-right corner of the screen without touching any button! This version realy sucks! The last good working version was 0.77u2a (Version 0.103)

D9 Half the ROMS are not recognized by MAME. It states missing components, yet the zip file contains the very files it lists missing. This has been the case of the last 2 versions. I've tried the very same ROMS on the PC and no problem. Even worse, it's hit or miss on which ROMS work and which don't. You never know what the real problem is, even in the log file. Needs work to meet the stability of it's PC counterpart or even earlier versions. (Version 0.103)

TC If I use an alias to my ROM directory (shared from a Linux server over SMB) this version locks up at startup. If I copy the files into a local ROM directory, they work - but I don't have enough local disk space for a full set! On startup, the arrow keys work, but CTRL, Option and so on do nothing, as do the mouse buttons. If I try to redefine the keys, it doesn't work - the only key that does anything when I'm in the key definitions is Escape. Neither of those problems occurred in the last version I had (guess who should have kept the .dmg around :) Finally, could the MacMAME User Data directory go in ~/Library/Application Support, NOT in Documents? The Documents directory is supposed to be for user-created documents, not program data. I don't want it to end up like My Documents on the average Windoze box, where you have to tiptoe between all the working directories that apps have created just to find your own stuff... ANONYMOUS With each new version of MAME, the emulation is improved. Problem is, if your ROM was ported on an older, less accurate MAME it may not conform to the newer, more accurate versions. Solution: re-port your arcade ROMs using the newer MAME, or stick with an older version. Even if you have newer ROM ports, you may find that newer versions of MacMAME will not play nicely on older processors. MacMAME .59 runs great on an old G3, .77 runs great on an old G4, but .96 is practically useless on the G3 and stutters on the G4. Solution: buy a new computer, or stick with an older version. (Version 0.96u1)
| Jun 15 2005 |
GOC9 Perhaps part of the solution would be for MAME to shift emphasis to delivering fast emulation and playability away from the pious nonsense of 'accurate emulation' and the extraordinary bloat seen in later versions. Indeed it would be better to fork MAME now, 1 branch for bloat and 'accurate emulation' (i.e slow emulation) and 1 for performance. If for no other reason that MAME's new goal of ultra sluggishness even on new machines is making it look bad. (Version 0.97u1)

SPAMGUY MacMAME is too hard to use and too picky. If your ROM isn't properly named and in .zip/directory format, you're SOL. Sometimes that's not even enough...Paperboy was always missing one component that was, of course, impossible to find. RockNES (pre-4.0 versions only; 4.0 is dead slow) is easy and robust, and I recommend that much more over this mess. All you need is a .nes file and you're set. (In fact, it ran Paperboy just fine. From that, I learned that Paperboy is godawful. :) (Version 0.96u1)

ANONYMOUS A single-machine emulator will emulate all games roughly the same way. But even that is a very complex task. For example: a Master System always has a Z80 and a SN76489. But it can also have a YM2413; a NES is even more complex: it always has a 6502, but games can have a variety of extra chips built in; and a SNES always has a 65836 and a SP700, but some games use extra chips like DSP, SuperFX, and C4. Now remember, MAME is an arcade emulator. It emulates a few thousand different games; and even though many games ran in the same boards (CPS, MVS, Cave), it's still hundreds - or thousands? - of different boards to emulate. That's why the strict naming thing. The app has to know what game it is, so it can be emulated properly. Say, the file is ddonpach.zip; MAME knows it will have to emulate the Cave hardware. If it tried to emulate any other board instead - such as System16, SSV, Cojag, or any damn obscure custom Gaelco or Seibu board - the game would just not run. Thus, RESPECT the work of its many developers! Not saying it is perfect, and criticism is good, but comparing this massive project with a NES emulator... heh. Not saying the NES is easy to emulate, especially given the crapload of mappers one has to support, but MAME is a huge thing for a reason. (Version 0.96u1)

ANONYMOUS What a waste of time. You probably have a nice neat packaged program. However, I have spent nearly 45 minutes trying to find a site that has ROM's for download (ROMs of actual games I own). I searched your link in your readme files and all I found were the 3 crappy free nonCopyRight games. All the other sites I found were all Ilegal Warez in nature and filled with Popups that somehow have gotten passed Safari. Your software borders on verge or Ilegal vs. Legal. You only provide that which keeps you on the thin line of Legality. Honestly, I have never wasted so much time trying to get nothing to work. You have provided another nothing to the community, instead you have provided another means of temptation for people to get themselves into trouble with your software. Listen If there were no legal issue involved here you would either provide the ROMS on your site and or you would provide links to legitimate ROM sites. Instead you hide behind your barely legal software and only demonstrate what can be done with it. Being that I did not actually play a single game other that watch some crap from the 3 ROMS on your site which did nothing but show the opening screens I have to rate your program as borderline Ilegal Carp. SPAMGUY This software is legal under the assumption that the only people who use it are those who own the games in cartridge form already. Sort of like P2P programs: they are legal (as has been shown in several court cases) under the assumption that they are used for noncopyrighted material. Supplying ROMs to us crosses the legality barrier as outright copyright violation. The producers of these games (especially Nintendo) value their property highly. If you want MAME to supply your ROMs, you get to compensate court costs if so needed. (Version 0.96u1)

ANONYMOUS It doesn't find your ROMs because you didn't read the instructions and move them to the new location. You must create a folder in your user directory named "MacMAME" and move all of the ROMs and other resources to the new directory in your user folder. While this is a major improvement over the last version released a few days ago, it still can't use my game controllers even though it recognizes them in the setup. As expected with major MAME updates, many of the ROMs that worked in 0.77x don't work in this version. You will have to either update your ROMs or stick with what you had earlier... LOST...REALLY... help! o_O i used to use a MAME on my G3 way back when...loved it! i just downloaded MacMAME-0.74u2 for OS X and none of the ROMs i recently downloaded and placed in the ROMs folder will show up...what am i doing wrong? ROMs are left as zip files and placed in the ROMs folder. also, the help documentation mentions a list of supported ROMs...supposed to be listed in a file called gamelist.txt...i don't seem to have that file...is there somewhere else i can find it? maybe i am just lucky and picking every ROM that isn't supported.

BARABBAS I try to play Metal Slug 1 and I click play then a box comes up that says "MacMAME has enocountered a problem." and lists the following items that can't be found: Where do I get these? (Version 0.71.2.1)

ALEXANDER SANTOS Great, so many Classic Games. If you are running OS 9, this version will not run. Just one point though, the OS 9 version of MacMAME is ALOT faster. Significant loss of speed from OS 9 to OS X on a 333Mhz iMac. I am only giving a minimal score on features and playability as it has gotten slower as MacMame migrated to OS X. I bleive this is an OS problem not a MAME problem, although I am not sure. (Version 0.71.2.1)

PORCEPIX Suggestion: Put a menu or a button "Questions & Feedback" directly in the app. Make it point to a FAQ page, with a mailto on the bottom. People do not read the read me. (Version 0.71.2.1)

BRAD OLIVER I guess I'm not being clear. I don't care if people come here to post complaints. I do care if the _only_ place they post complaints is here. Think of it as a common courtesy - if you've got a legitimate complaint, please do me the favor of letting me know via the many support options in the MacMAME readme so I at least have a fighting chance of working with you to fix the issue. Anything else you do besides that (including posting here) is none of my concern. (Version 0.71.2.1)

ANONYMOUS Brad: People who decide to post here instead of writing you have a reason: This is a place to share comments and reviews. No one will ever know what others think if everyone writes directly. I come here to see if new versions are worth downloading or not: I'm a dial-up user. When everyone complains, I know I will skip a version or two. (Version 0.71.2.1)

BRAD OLIVER I have no problems with people voicing criticism of MacMAME here - that's what this whole feedback thing is for. However, I don't read the feedback here (or on versiontracker) regularly, so unless you let me know of issues with the app via normal means mentioned in the MacMAME readme, then I can't do much to fix the problem. My assumption - and this could be wrong - is that people who use my app and find a problem typically want it fixed. :) (Version 0.712)

ANONYMOUS I have yet to receive an e-mail from anyone with problems with 0.71.2. That doesn't mean they don't exist - it means that posting "it doesn't work for me" reviews here is probably the very worst way for me to find and fix problems with the software. If you're having difficulties, fire up your e-mail instead of rushing here first thing to voice your displeasure. (Version 0.712)

ANONYMOUS Make no mistake, I am very happy this is in the works. The other macmames were pretty damn good, and Ver 66.2 was great, slow in os x, but great. But version 71x does not work properly on my machine. (iBook 900Mhz) Reviews are just what they are, reviews of the software based on user experience. Not a knock against the programmer. ANONYMOUS If you don't like it fine. But let's give props to Brad for even bothering to port this. This is the first reincarnation of a Cocoa Mame, and sure. It's bound to have some problems as there's a lot of work removing the carbon code. Brad, there's a TON of Mac users out there that consider you one of the greatest Mac programmers out there. Thanks! JEFF Installed MacMacme .712 as of July 15th, crashes when trying to launch any game, I am a proficient MAME user so I know what I am doing. Tried deleting prefs, redownloading program, etc.. This software needs to go back in the shop for a couple more days. (Version 0.711)

BRIAN KENDIG MacMAME 0.71 has some problems and has been pulled until they can be fixed. For more details, see the MacMAME message board at 'http://www.bannister.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=26'. Tips: For a better framerate, turn off bezel art (under the Video tab). (Version 0.711)

ADDICTION IS MY VICE A hideously poor frame-rate, as well as inferior controller support, drove me away from the MacMame scene a while back. Every so often I download the latest version and give it a go. I'm always disappointed with the results. Thankfully you can still find the older versions of Mame and install it on a pre-G3 and get as good/better speeds than the same games in the latest Mame on a G3/4! (Version 0.711)

DESTRUCTIVE CACTUS I hope the next version that comes out, which is Mac OS X only, will solve my 'horrible frame rate' issues in os x. Sadly, because of input limitations in os x (read: bugs and unsupported stuff) as well as the framerate (super speedy in os 9), I usually reboot to os 9 just to use MacMAME. (Version 0.66.1)

DARUKARU If MacMAME doesn't have it, it's probably not worth playing. Kind of a shame that they're dropping Classic support, but any system that can emulate the newer games is probably running OS X anyway. (Version 0.66)

IAN LUECK For some reason, any version after 0.60a screws up the keyboard setup for Paperboy, making it virtually unplayable, so I have kept the last version that it worked with, 0.58. Also, the OpenGL plug-in shows horrendous frame rates for my machine running OS 10.2.4. In Mac OS 10.1, it was smooth as butter. I hope these bugs will be fixed soon, but either way, MacMAME is still the king of Mac emulators, hands down. (Version 0.60a)
