ANONYMOUS  Good service but limited use.

Installation and use are very easy.

I have tested JonDo's anonimity through their free proxies, with highly dedicated testers. I can say that the anonymity was perfect, provided that Java and JavaScript were disabled. This is a much beter result than NetShade's almost almost total lack of anonymity.

Deactivating Java and JavaScript is a must in any anonymous surf, but one should keep in mind that it prevents from accessing properly lots of sites and services.

Speed was not so slow on average (40Kb/s) but unstable and sometimes, indeed, the traffic was almost stopped.

I then considered using the paying access, which is probably reliable and fast if I consider how rapidly and kindly the support service answered my questions.

THE PROBLEM IS THE ENORMOUS PRICE OF THE PAYING SERVICE. The best price is more than 6 $ perGb downloaded. Therefore, if you intend to download, say 10 Gb per month, you will end paying 720 $ per year. This, I regret to say, is ridiculous (10 times more than the average internet access provider).

8OO8  I've been looking for an easy to use program for anonymous surfing, and JAP is pretty easy to configure and use, which is a big plus, but I found its one "for free" proxy IP quite unreliable and sometimes quite slow.

The first time I used it, the proxy did hide my own IP, giving its own info instead. I tested it on a couple of websites that show your IP info.

The second and third times I used it, those two websites showed my own IP info and not the proxy's. And I made doubly sure that JAP was enabled and correctly configured.

And the last time I used it I couldn't make an internet connection at all using their proxy.

They offer proxies that should work better for a small fee, but the payment process options are rather a hassle.

On JAP's website, they offer a free small coupon(to test out their for pay proxies) for anyone that requests it; I emailed them two requests a while back but have gotten no response.

The JAP developers still need to get their act together; JAP is developed in Germany by German developers, but it definitely lacks the well renowned German efficiency.

JONDOS  Hi,

there may be various reasons these sites showed your IP:

- You activated active content in your browser (Java, Flash). Never do this, as it renders anonymisation software useless.

- You deactivated JAP / JonDo as local proxy in your browser. Then you won't see any activity in the main window of the client while surfing.

Please follow the instructions of the built-in assistant, and you are done.

= but the payment process options are rather a hassle. =

Please tell us why you think this, as we always strive to make this better. Maybe you would like to have credit card payments? We are working on that.

= I emailed them two requests a while back but have gotten no response.=

It may take some days for a response, as we get dozens of such requests. All of them are answered individually to also give answer to questions.

Best regards

ANONYMOUS  Please do not underestimate German efficiency.

Germany may have lost two world wars but, in terms of anonymity, no other nation could ever anonymize so many millions of innocent people and recycle them (clothes, hair, teeth and even skin).

KOSOVAR1  Well, this is a glorious idea, but I am skeptical of any tool that promises an escape from the consumer-explotation juggernaut. To whit, I installed this program (which was a pleasantly straightforward process), and had apparent initial success in anonymopus surfing. But five minutes later, for reasons I can't identify, I was unable to connect to ANY websites, so I had to undo the settings that JAP had helped me configure. But guess what? One of the first sites that appeared (unbidden on my part) was a JonDonym, a Mix-Cascade service, that charges if you use them. So how did it happen that a site that purportedly offers to free you from prying and unsolicited advertising--for a fee, of course!--manages to slip through the veil of JAP only to try to sell you something.

Dammit, this is exactly why I wanted JAP in the first place, to stop this from happening. Does JAP enable these service providers to appear in your web browser unbidden to hawk their wares? I'd like to know. Now, since my web browsing is broken, I have to figure out how to re-connect and send this off. Bollocks!

JONDOS  Hi,

= I was unable to connect to ANY websites, so I had to undo the settings that JAP had helped me configure.=

this may be due to your choice of the free CCC cascade. One of their operators has severe problems with an essential proxy software (squid) on his server. Please choose any other cascade.

The free cascades are run as "hobby". For a high quality of service, please choose the paid ones.

= One of the first sites that appeared (unbidden on my part) was a JonDonym, a Mix-Cascade service, that charges if you use them. =

Our software does not show any sites in the browser without user request. For sure, you clicked into the status line of the program, and opened it manually (this may take some seconds). Moreover, our home pages do not sell anything. You only get information about JAP / JonDo, its operators and technicians, and may download the software (that you already have). And, at the latest after clicking on the message in our software status line, you may delete this message so that even clicking on it unintentionally won't happen again.

Please also notice that our software is no ad-blocker. You have to install further software, e.g. a firefox plugin, to get rid of website ads. Moreover, you should switch off all active content interpreters (Java, Flash,...) that, besides protecting your anonymity, also gives you a big advantage in fighting ads.

= Now, since my web browsing is broken, I have to figure out how to re-connect and send this off. Bollocks! =

This should not be very difficult. JAP / JonDo does not make automatic changes in your computer configuration. You just have to undo the changes that you did yourself. Please refer to the internal help that explains this.

Best regards

ARNIE  Seems like a nice tool but I just can't get it to work on OS X 10.3 "Panther" on my iBook... When i launch the app, nothing comes up, no interface, no program... I'd really love to check that "surf anonymously" checkbox! =) But it just never appears.

Perhaps is it a problem with the Java engine I'm using? I've had no troubles with other Java apps tough...
