JAYCE  Because I have a lot of downloaded short stories and other printed material, I use Narrator to read me a short story so I can rest my eyes, to read a short story to add to iTunes so I can listen to it later on an iPod, and increasingly often to read me a page of how-to or tutorial when I am working on something like photo development where it really helps to have an audio walk-thru of a new process for a time or two. I enjoy having Narrator for those read-alongs because I can change both the actor and the quality of the actor's voice, or for long pieces have parts read as paragraph-dialogs.

Narrator has a lot more flexibility than I have ever used, but it is so well developed and so clearly explained that I have never spent frustrating time trying to get it to do what it claims to do. I know that if I spent more time with the program I could do more with it but . . . the program makes it so easy just to Go.

This is a wonderful program.

AHARMON  This is just the type of application which has been missing from the Mac OS X arsenal for far too long.

Being able to open and read Word .docx files is a major upside.

I would ask though, for some sort of "Import URL" capability for people with low/restricted vision to be able to read web pages without having to select text which they cannot see on the first place...

Services>Narrator>New Document With Selection

does NOT work with Flock...

OCR needed to parse PDF files...

When words of a title of a poem use small caps, Narrator enunciates each individual letter, not the words....

Needs a "rewind" button. Being able to scrub through text, and have the program highlight the currently spoken word would be a big addition for low-vision users.

Again, this application is a big step in the right direfction. But it still needs a lot of fit-and-finish polishing.

CLRANEY74  I just installed Narrator and I must say I'm impressed with the program. I like the ability to change voices, which helps to keep things interesting when listening to long, boring text files. I intend to use this to help with research that I'm doing and when I travel and don't have the ability to read, I'll listen to my iPod read to me.

CRICKET99  Wow! What a nifty application! I've played with the trial version and have found it easy to learn. My elementary school-aged children are fascinated and have been inspired to write their own 'stories' just to hear them read back in various voices. Any program that can inspire such creativity and is easy to use has my purchase.

LAVALLETTE  The Complete Accessibility Package

Just downloaded and installed version 2.0.1 of this app. And I have to say it is a quantum leap improvement on version 1. Along with MacDictate, Narrator has now provided me with the complete accessibility package. And with the ability to create a doc, choose a voice, alter inflections, then export to iTunes. I have just adapted a book a visually impaired person has just written with Narrator. Each character was then given their own voice and altered to provide its own personality. Once transferred to iTunes then this visually impaired person can listen to it when they want to alter, edit or whatever to their book. Along with the price which is an astonishingly low price - I decided on the Household License - now my whole family can enjoy 'playing' about with it.

Visually, the app has been improved leaps and bounds and is now proudly in keeping with my Leopard. All in all, an absolute bargain, a very effective tool and a dream to use.

As a published writer, I have always believed that the ears are the best judge and critic of written work, and sometimes of people too. Narrator is certainly testament to that. Well done Dejal.

By the way...for the cynics I am not related to the developer or met him. I am just a proud user.
