IGNIKANOVA Whoever reads this comment please help me! :'( A few days ago I was using MSN and it went really well. Then it won't log my account in! Not that the service is unavailable or my password is wrong or anything, it just keeps playing the signing in animation and after a while, it goes back to how it looks like when you first start it up. And what's really bugging me is that it's only happening to my account! It logs other people's accounts perfectly! And other services like messenger for windows and amsn logs me in perfectly! I tried everything! I switched passwords, and cleared account history, but it still doesn't work! Any solutions to this? I can use aMsn but it's really laggy cos I got a lot of contacts

BOUSOZOKU Supposedly, the audio/video for corporate accounts of the Mac version is ahead of what's being used on Windows Live Messenger and will be the standard for the next major version of that. The consumer side of the Mac version will supposedly be able to do audio/video when they're ready on the Windows side.

I have a conspiracy theory: Apple may not want a video capable client on OS X other than iChat, and Microsoft do not want a Messengr capable iChat. Simply put, Windows corporate Messenger uses a new A/V standard and Live Messenger is transitioning to that new A/V stack too. So it's perfectly reasonable for Mac Messenger 7 to also be built using the new A/V stack. The reason why there is no consumer A/V support is because Live Messenger hasn't finished transitioning to the new A/V stack. So in fact, Mac Messenger is ahead of Live Messenger, not behind. And so when Mac Messenger is behind in technology we complain and when it is ahead in technology, we complain more. Admittedly, it'd be nice to have consumer A/V working right now, but it would have been pointless to port over an old A/V stack which is going to be replaced in a few months anyways. Personally, I hope that Mac BU manages to update Mac Messenger quickly to activate A/V functionality once the next version of Live Messenger is released. If there is too much of a delay, then I'd agree they're coasting.

BUZZARD Getting everything into the imminent new A/V stack was the reason MS gave in September 2006 for not including A/V in Messenger 6. http://blogs.msdn.com/macmojo/archive/2006/09/27/774149.aspx MS proposes lots of serious technical hurdles as reasons why they couldn't do A/V with messenger. But both aMSN and Mercury were already doing A/V before the above blog, and Messenger 7 still can't do it. I'd call that coasting.

BUZZARD Yes, I saw that Microsoft blog from November 2007. I recall they said they were making progress on A/V for the Mac version, but it was a complicated process, matching up platforms, etc. OK, cool, reasonable excuse. But what I don't understand is why Microsoft cannot sort out A/V for the OSX version of Messenger, while the unpaid developers of aMSN and Mercury have. Those applications have had A/V for years. So are the Messenger developers over at the Microsoft Mac BU just dimwits, or is there some other overriding reason for not including A/V with their own Messenger?

From version 5 they only added corporate options useless for a common user. BUZZARD So this is the new version of Messenger that many of us have been waiting for? And STILL no capability for audio/video? Why is it that Microsoft cannot seem to come up with a version that includes A/V, when both aMSN and Mercury have had this capability (and more) for years? MS apparently can't even play catchup with freeware. I see no reason to download this crippleware unless you have some requirements for using the corporate features, and that is probably a very small minority of Messenger users. But then, after Office 2008, did we expect anything even marginally innovative from the Microsoft Mac developers?

MEEGO Office 2008 was buggy - and still is - but it's rather good software IMO. Plus the Mac BU has a certain degree of autonomy inside Microsoft. They have their own release schedule, are not bound to the Windows interface. I'm not sure the Mac BU folks deserve that bashing.

BUZZARD I am using (1) Intel Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro and (2) Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, OSX 10.4.10 With both machines, Messenger crashes each and every time I simply close a chat window. I'm sure Microsoft is aware of the problem, as a crash report is filed each time (at the user's option). The same crash is reproducible with other users and seems it may have begun with 10.4.9. I'm not expecting any help from MS in fixing messenger. My advice: you don't even bother with this piece of junk, assuming you are running a system similar to my own. If you want a crash-free MS Messenger experience, you will have no option but to use one of the other MSN clients.

GERMANO60 you're not forced to use the MSN official client to chat with your friends on MSN. you can use aMSN or Mercury. they're practically aligned to the feature set of the latest MSN Window Client, the only thing yet missing yet being audio. They've got everything else: video, animated emoticon, file transfer, etc.etc.etc. Work seamlessly with the integrated iSight on iMacs. They're Universal Binaries. And they're free :)

MAVERICK I have noticed that with version 6, it takes longer to log in. Finally we can see other emoticons, and the status message with iTunes integration, but Adium 1.0 can do that, iChat thorugh Jabber also. I agree with Mike Ratt, possibly Microsoft is keeping Mac Messengger behind to encourage the myth that Mac and PCs can't talk, or to show Macs as out-of-date machines. Anyway, Adium or iChat are far better options.

GERMANO60 That's not a major version but for being an Universal app. But for the remaining part, definitely poor in terms of feature support. There are guys out there that, without accessing MS MSN specs, made out great MSN clients practically aligned to Messenger Win: aMSN and Mercury on the top. I can't believe that a MS division, with full access to all MSN specs, has yet to come out with an acceptable Mac versoin with video, audio and all the other staff. Thumb down, sorry guys of MS MAC BU.

THIRSTYROBOT Reasonably stable, noticeably zipper thanks to (finally) being a Universal Binary app. Those are the pros. Now for the cons. Messenger is staggering in its continued lack of features (no video, no audio, no compatibility with other platforms, and no user-adjustable themes). Oh and that brushed metal look? That's so...2003. Those Mac users who need an alternative to iChat have every reason to stick with Adium or Fire. This dog just doesn't hunt, my friends.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y Yep. It's pretty much the biggest piece of lazy programming crap on Mac OS X. Getting pretty tired of the lack of support for Macs. I'm glad Yahoo is finally coming around with their chat app and the new support to add Windows Live users on Yahoo allows me to use the video chat function with them. But this app is an utter disgrace. They should either update it with the necessary features or they should just fizzle it out like they did with Internet Explorer. If they're not going to add basic freaking functions like video chat and audio chat, I'd rather use Proteus, Fire, or Adium. Give me a break, guys. This app sucks the way it is. I have heard that there is going to be an all new MSN Messenger app soon though, so I haven't given up on them entirely...not yet anyway. Still a crappy piece of software.

1. I tried to send a file to a co-worker on a PC who's using Windows Messenger 5.1, and its said it couldn't send the file because their Messenger "doesn't support encryption." Is there an easy workaround for this? 2. It takes 2-3 clicks of the red close box in order to close a converation window. 3. At times attempting to send a message resulted in no response whatsoever. No matter if I would double-click a contact's name, right click and send an instant message, or chose "send" from the menubar...the app would not respond. It just sat there. No spinning beach ball at all. 4. Same thing would happen if I tried to quit the app....no response. Not from Apple-Q, not from the "Messenger" window...nothing. Had to force quit the application

JEDIK Tabbed viewing? Where is it? 5.1 looks exactly like 5.0 for me, with the 'not so useful' tabs for personal and corporate contacts (needs a propietary server). Where is the "new features" list? Is this just a "bug fix" release? AdiumX offers much more features, and is a multi-IM cliente (also AIM/iChat, Yahoo, ICQ, etc...). The most complete so far is Mercury however, that used tabbed chatting and offers video conference.

No wonder the windows side think mac users are stuck-up assholes. GET OVER IT, THE MAC SIDE OF MICROSOFT IS ON "OUR SIDE". This application isnt that bad, in fact its well developed with little bugs. I admit Adium is good, but its got major flaws. All those people saying it doesnt have audio or video and kick this program for not having it, go use a damned pc or switch to AOL. Thats just like saying a honda jazz doesnt have the capabilities to beat a mustang so therefore you knock it. Just remember that the MSN service is free, and the application is free. Name one other actual free msn client that is perfect, with video and audio, with the look of OS X and great integration with everything. Microsoft Messenger is getting there, and you people who are impatient, as I said before, get a pc and stop ruining the macs reputation by acting the fool.

CKOHLER I'm a heavy MSN Messenger user and this new version works just fine. I"m not seeing any of sluggishness some here are experiancing and I'm using it on an iBook G3 600Mhz running Tiger. All in all, this is a better looking version than the previous with support for Microsoft's Corporate IM server (which I don't use). It's now up-to-date with the Windows version in terms of emoticon support and avatar support. I'm also finding it easier to transfer files successfully. All in all, I like it.

DAVE This guy makes fair points - I don't think MS with ever step up to the challenge of providing video confrencing through a mac, as for sound we can be less forgiving. But it is a lot more responsive, we can finally see picture icons of our friends, can finally transfer files and it doesn't look TOO shabby by MS standards. All in all, better than a smack in the face.

ANONYMOUS This new version of MSN is actually quite nice if a little (very) late. They have improved the interface (The aqua styling was long past its sell-by-date). But does someone want to tell me how to remove the "Corporation" tab? Added Avatars (One of the things that drove me elsewhere initially). Gone are the annoying advertisment banners. I suppose most of the negative feedback is directed to the length of the wait we have had to put up with and the seemingly lack of development. If this application came out a year ago it would probably have been better received. I'll be sticking with Adium, despite it's inferior File Transfer. I like the custom setup I have.

ANONYMOUS This is the single worst instant messaging client for Mac OS X. It has the most limited set of features, consumes the most system resources, and has now become a muddled Frankenstein-like hybrid of enterprise and personal messaging functions. Even the name change is confusing, especially with the new naming convention being mixed up by several Mac software and news sites, as well as Microsoft themselves. Office is still a good app and even works very well at doing certain tasks, but this app is a non-starter. Microsoft should leave the IM market and concentrate on other ventures. I urge you to try Adium instead.

As you can still get Adium, Fire, Proteus and Mercury that has more features (and look better) the fifth star is nowhere in sight.

CHOOKS I open this up and it tells me im not connected to the internet??? Im on the net in every other program, but MSN tells me theres no connection. I can go and check my network prefs in MSN prefs but it wont let me put in a username and password, but will let me put in the type, server and port info. Before I just go back to another client...

WHYTOI Tried it out and looked at all the features. THe only conclusion I can make is that this is a trojan made to slow down our OS X. With little feature improvements short of some dressing up, the RAM and CPU hog just don't make sense. And it crashed during the first usage session with a report going back to MBU. Correct, back to Adium is the right decision.

This may not be as cool looking, and when Adium gets their act together I will go back to it. BEDOUIN Trash. How can you give a free product a 1 for value? Easy, they would have to *pay* me to use this instead of Adium. MS would also have to pay me to use the Mac Windows Media Player; I've started using WMV Player by flip4mac and haven't looked back. The only new feature in version 5 is the ability to use and see pictures, and the picture feature is substandard compared to iChat or Adium (you can't resize, crop, or move the pic like in Adium). The only thing MS can do well for Mac is Office, and even that's questionable at times.

WACKYMACS Compared to the Windows version this is far from complete features wise, but Microsoft certainly have worked on the interface for version 5.0. 5.0 now uses brushed metal, and new OS X-like icons for the new toolbars. They have also implemented the ability to use user pictures, but audio and video capabilities are still missing. Overall its improving, slowly, but not features wise.

What's really annoying me with 4.0.1 is that I'm not receiving the real time email alerts anymore for my Hotmail account! At least they had that right in version 3.5 before screwing it up with the 4.0.1 upgrade. Also, isn't everyone sick of the Passion of the Christ DVD ad and the Ashlee Simpson link in the MSN messenger banner?! That banner hasn't been updated in at least 6 months! I'll pay good money just to get rid of that!

_MAC_ADMIRER Apologies to anyone offended by my post. I am just tired of the fact that this application is still not stable on the macintosh. I presumed everyone had this bug but it's probably just me and my crud 733 quicksilver. I have used macs since I was 14 (am 24), I love them dearly and have always preferred macs, ideally I'd love to work for apple, but that's just a dream. I use them mostly for graphics as it's what I do. My comments regarding OS 10.3 were negative as I find using 10.2x more stable on my pbook g4. I'll go back to my mind and planet now... :D

_MAC_ADMIRER This application has been essentially worthless from it's introduction to mac. I doubt that if microsoft made it work 'properly' it would benefit apple vs. microsoft in any way. The apple OSX is still an unstable half-finished operating system (yes 10.3x), apple's computer hardware features are still 2-3yrs behind that of todays basic PC's (why only 2usb ports? no DVDr as standard? apple want money money money) and I believe if apple software engineers stopped seeing themsleves as superior trend-setters for 1 day, then they could help microsoft's team build messenger so that it doenst log you off as soon as you switch applications!! (v.4.01) Just remember apple only make up something like 2% of the worldwide computer market, very long way to go if you ask me, lets not forget its a graphic design tool (macintosh) not a family pc as the parade all their products to be... which is cheeky ($$$)

EMMA TRENT msn for mac is tolerable althouh mine signs me out daily is i run any other browser or web application. tres annoying lol.

Microsoft won't bother updating our version.. because they know if they do they will be completely screwed.. because mac will then be superior to them in every aspect.. microsoft however is coming out with the new version of messenger soon.. complete with many updates and yes display pictures...word!

DAVE We could not send this file because the connection is blocked. Please contact your network administrator or Internet service provider; they may be able to enable file transfers. im gettin the above message when sending files! anyone know how to resolve this please? | |
