CHRISCHRAM Under Snow Leopard this version of Monolingual does something to its preferences file that causes the application to crash after a number of runs. deleting net.sourceforge.Monolingual.plist and then resetting personal preferences fixes things for awhile, until next time. I just tried locking the preferences to see if I get better mileage. Time will tell. (Version 1.4.1)

ROBERTCOOGAN2 Caused all sorts of problems on my iMac. After running it, it made Safari, Mail, iCal, and Firefox all crash upon launch. Went back into Time Machine and restored the system. Tried running it again, only with the same results. Plus, the second time around Adobe PhotoShop caused (what I think was) a kernel panic twice. The system froze and became unresponsive and the screen dimmed almost like a windowshade was being pulled down. Best bet: don't install, don't run at all. Unless you are totally committed to removing language files that granted you may not use, but when you consider the size of the files you are dealing with here, it makes little if any difference if you remove them at all. ACURAICE I have been using this program for years! Has always worked flawlessly. Not sure why the developer has released this update for Snow Leopard, when I just used this program days ago without any errors, including to remove the additional unnecessary architectures in Snow Leopard with the slightly older version. Not sure exactly whats been updated, but as for being compatible with Snow Leopard, it has been. Keep up the great work! I would have gladly paid for this program and all of your had work. THEL I can't say for certain regarding the exact settings location in Leopard or Snow Leopard - haven't been able to install them here yet - but in Tiger and earlier X OSes, removing unwanted languages from your list in the "International" prefs pane (in System Preferences) should cause Monolingual to launch each time with those languages already selected/checked. MITCH_DE Best Tool to remove not needed language file. It find much, much more than XSLIMER and also its much easier to remove them as XSLIMMER. I would NOT use Monolingual to remove PPC/Intel Code - that XSLIMMERs work, more safe (Blacklists). Also check always before STARTING the preferences : remove ONLY foreing languages - NEVER ALL ENGLISH, NEVER yoor LOCAL language. (Version 1.4)

Version 1.3.9 is the last version for Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)." (Version 1.4)

SNOWWHITESICKETTE Monolingual works well. I used it to remove some of the junk I don't need that clutters up my hard drive. I ran Monolingual to remove each of the three nuisance types it helps you delete. (Languages, keyboard layouts, and architectures.) When running languages, I unchecked all English options, but I probably would have been fine just leaving English and US English unchecked. Got rid of all keyboard layouts I'll never need, as well as the Intel binary that just clog up my hard drive. Everything was smooth, fast, and worked perfectly. I was so happy with the results, I ran Monolingual on two more Macs that day. Each Mac had good results, and for each Mac the process was fast, trouble-free and uneventful. Nice app, but people who don't read instructions before diving in, or who don't know what the keyboard layout or architecture type they are deleting is used for, should tread with caution. (Based on reading some of the comments.) Intel binary is nothing I need running a PPC, and deleting it isn't going to cause a problem. But for Intel Macs, I suggest learning about Rosetta and why you might not want to delete PPC code if you don't know if it serves a purpose. Backing up the disk ahead of time is a good idea. I believe Monolingual could be used to make a DIY optimized version of an application. For instance, if you have a G3, you can remove the architecture for the G4 and G5, as well as Intel and others. I'm going to try optimizing some of my larger Universal apps and see if it helps. I always back up my hard drive with SuperDuper! before doing anything like this, just in case. Monolingual saved 180MB on one Mac, 250MB on another, and 750MB on the third Mac I tried it with. I always do a custom install when I install OS X, and leave Additional Languages, Printer Drivers and Additional Fonts unchecked. I think the point updates sneak the languages back into the system, because Monolingual found stuff I know I deliberately did NOT install in the OS. Monolingual worked as advertised for me, and freed up valuable disk space. (Version 1.3.9)

FROSTY This program will break your copy of MS Office 2008. After you remove the various language packages, it works fine, however, you will not be able to install an MS Office updates thereafter as the installer likes to have all the language packages there. Presumably it installs updates to the various language packages as well, and when it can't find them it pukes out. I have tried to 'fix' the updaters by following advice from various sites that detail how to override the 'check' so that you can install the updates anyway, however, the result was that MS Word crashes on launch now. So, use with caution. (Version 1.3.9)

HANDYMAC One change between v.1.3.7 and 1.3.9 (I haven't seen 1.3.8) is that the Preferences window in 1.3.7 listed only "Directories which contain language files" with the option to uncheck any of them; while v.1.3.9's Preferences also lists directories for Architectures, with System unchecked by default. Thus if v.1.3.9 is run without changing the default settings, it WILL NOT remove PPC architectures from a Universal System on an Intel Mac, which addresses the complaint in recent posts. As a Mac support tech I set up a lot of older Macs, and find Monolingual very useful for stripping out unneeded materials on smaller hard disks. It may not be for use by rank amateurs, but the ReadMe does cover all the necessary points, and it's not the developer's fault if people don't read it -- or run the utility when they really don't know what they're doing. CPRAGMAN, the release notes are in the ReadMe. (Version 1.3.9)

BIGDAVE56 Firstly, it isn't Monolingual's fault if the user doesn't read the readme file. Agree about the default setting suggestions though. But architectures aren't the real hogs- language support is. So the only architecture I remove is G3. (I am pretty sure I won't be buying a G3 machine.) The app tells you what architecture your machine has. On one pass, Monolingual removed one point nine GIGS. Just ran it again after the latest round of Apple updates- space reclaimed 487 MEGS, the equivalent of a complete Microsoft Orifice installation. I uncheck all versions of English, and Spanish, and remove everything else. If you have an older Mac with a smaller HD, this app is a must for you. Cleaning out your printers and running this app may save you 3-4GB. If you don't use GarbageBand, then run cleanapp or appzapper, several more gigs for something useful. No problems with breaking Apple Mail or any other apps here on my G4; however, as usual, YMMV. (Version 1.3.8)

JOHN SAWYER CJS Wow. I haven't used Monolingual for a couple years, but I see that even the latest version, 1.3.8, still has as its defaults, settings that will cause many of the problems that people have been complaining about for years--deleting architectures that are actually needed, etc. Monolingual's readme file does say "you should not strip the System frameworks if you want to use Rosetta", but I can tell many people don't read the readme file. Even so, Monolingual's defaults shouldn't be set to delete things that the readme file says you shouldn't delete, as if the developer is saying "do my work for me, and change the settings to what they should be". A minor quibble is that I don't understand why the developer switches to using the term "System frameworks" in this part of the readme, about not removing architectures, since some users who don't know the terms, won't automatically know the developer is using somewhat synonymous terms. I guess the developer knows what he's doing when he runs this app himself, so he assumes his knowledge must be being telepathically transmitted to anyone else who uses it. (Version 1.3.8)

ENCRO Monolingual 1.3.8 will break Mail.app on Leopard and possibly other code signed applications. I can manage to consistently break Mail.app and cause it to popup the password window. It will then never remember the password, attempt to store or attempt to retrieve it from the keychain *if the Application code signature is invalid*. In testing I've tried removing many things from Mail.app such as language files, compressing images, removing redundant unnecessary files and stripping the redundant PowerPC binary and various other things from the bundle. None of this seems to damage Mail.app's code signature. How do you break Mail.app you ask? By stripping the debug symbols from Mail.app using one of many app trimming applications such as Monolingual. Since Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard introduced Code Signing and Apple Mail is code signed my guess is that because the bundle is changed and the code signature is then broken and invalid Apple Mail is then treated as an untrusted application and is refused access to the keychain by SecurityServer. http://developer.apple.com/releasenotes/Security/RN-CodeSigning/index.html applications should trigger a popup confirmation to allow the Application to update the keychain but it appears that Mail.app does not do this and SecurityServer suppresses the dialog as the code signature is invalid. I have filed as Apple Bug ID #5734181 Opening Console.app and checking secure.log shows many entries from SecurityServer to advise: Feb 10 23:04:02 macbookpro com.apple.SecurityServer[20]: suppressing keychain prompt for invalidly signed client /Applications/Mail.app(7514) Feb 10 23:04:32: --- last message repeated 16 times --- If you are getting these messages, this wll mean you may need to restore from a backup version of Mail.app from storage, time machine or another computer. If you re-install the app from the original 10.5 Installer CD you may also need to run the 10.5.1 installer and Security Update to ensure that Mail.app is up to date. =================================== Technical Details for strip command =================================== /usr/bin/strip: changes being made to the file will invalidate the code signature in: /private/tmp/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail #This shell code sample taken from Trimmit.app # strip debug symbols. KRYSTOF VASA Well, it should be just fine as you're able to run 32-bit on a 64-bit Mac without a problem. According to Apple, the only 64-bit app that's shipping right now with OS X is the Chess game. So you won't save much space removing Intel 64-bit code. However, all the (Cocoa) frameworks are 64-bit "ready", stripping them would save a lot of space, however, I wouldn't do it... Some links may be fragile. Slimming apps is one thing, but the system another. (Version 1.3.8)

DAVIDSWELT Folks, do not use the option that allows you to strip PPC code from Universal Binaries to save space on your Intel machine. This feature is seriously flawed, as it deleted system resources that are important and needed whenever applications are run under Rosetta. In my case, Excel stopped working with certain files, and I couldn't synchronize (hotsync) my Palm any more (it's a PPC application). I had to manually debug this (Console) reinstall a number of files from my backup (mostly /System/Library/Printers and /System/Library/Extensions and God knows what). This would probably have been too difficult for many users, and they would have had to reinstall OS X. Until this piece of software has been updated to stay away from /System files, I recommend not using the "strip universal binaries" function. (Version 1.3.7)

I was talking to one of the mac boys (Genius Bar) who delt with my failing logic board and we both had the same problem because of this program. Also, at the time I saved about 2gb. I was initially a little concerned about the potential for it causing some problems and did not relish re-installing my OS and all of my apps, but I gave it a go. Very welcome since my Boot Camp partition is getting to be rather large. I've since recommended this to friends and all have had a flawless experience with it. Given this, and the fact that it is free then I can't come upw ith a reason not to give it a full 5 stars. DALLASKALANI The aside about protecting the frameworks folder is NO WHERE NEAR adequate. Every non-Universal application needs to be reinstalled after this utility is run. Yes it saves a lot of space, but that is something that needs to be red-flagged BEFORE it happens. (Version 1.3.5)

DALLASKALANI On Intel Macs, Monolingual (version 1.3.5) nukes Rosetta by default. You had to choose for it not to. Without Rosetta all of my non-Universal apps (e.g., Photoshop, Word, Excel, etc.) would not run. Reinstalling the system has revived my laptop somewhat, but I also had to reinstall the Adobe Creative Suite. If a program is going to kill a very important part of the system (i.e., Rosetta) there should be a much larger warning. (Version 1.3.6)

CHARLESS Unfortunately, you have hosed your copy of OS X, and will need to boot from the original install discs and do an Archive and Install in order to get Rosetta support back. If you are unhappy with this, you should contact the author of this app and tell him to fix this problem. (Version 1.3.4)

GREG RAVEN This is certainly a better way of removing localization files than searching for them and then deleting them by hand. However, after running Monolingual on my system, the Spotlight input field is unusable because it is mapped to some utterly alien keyboard arrangement. As far as I can tell, only the "a" key is in the same place it should be. I'm using the Dvorak layout, and everything else seems to be working okay except for Spotlight. (Version 1.3.3)

BRUCE_Y sounds like you inadvertantly removed some of the keyboard mapping references (called Architecture in the app). Q. My keyboard appears not to be working after using Monolingual. A. Most likely, you deleted the keyboard layout for your default input language. For English, German, etc. (which are all roman languages) this is the Roman keyboard layout. You can restore the layout by copying it from another Mac to the correct location. If that was the case in your case, try his suggestion (above). (Version 1.3.4)
| Aug 14 2006 |
BRUCE_Y As I looked at the program, the "Input" tab lists Dvorak as well as other keyboard system mappings. Perhaps that is what was inadvertantly removed. In any event, sounds like his suggestion of trying to re-copy from a non-monolingualized mac is one way to go. A more extreme measure is to either reinstall your system or to use something like Pacifist to just reinstall the Dvorak layout components. Hope these help. (Version 1.3.4)
| Aug 14 2006 |
GREG RAVEN I clearly did not delete the Dvorak files, because I was able to type as expected in every application aside from Spotlight. However, after powering cycling the computer, even Spotlight works as it should. (Version 1.3.4)

LOKHEED A predictive space saving report feature would be very welcome. You are notified of how much space you saved after deleting the language/keyboard/arch you selected, but not informed before hand. CHARLESS This is a great program for deleting needed files and hosing your OS X installation. It's not strictly needed, though, since you could accomplish much the same effect by dragging your /System directory to the Trash and entering the admin password. In all seriousness, beware of this utility. By default, it removes all architectures other than your machine's native architecture. This means that on an Intel Mac, it will delete all PowerPC code from universal binaries. Now, you might think this would only apply to applications on your system. You'd be wrong. This program will strip the PowerPC code from *all* universal binaries on your system, including all the system libraries and frameworks. The problem with this is that for PowerPC-only apps to run in Rosetta, they *need* the PowerPC code in those libraries and frameworks. The upshot of this is that THIS APPLICATION WILL PREVENT ROSETTA FROM WORKING AT ALL until you do an Archive and Install. For this reason, I would recommend against using this highly dangerous app. Messing with the system is a very risky thing to do. Sometimes those "unneeded" files aren't as unneeded as they appeared at first glance... (Version 1.3.2)

TOMIS It moved some 41,000+ files to the trash without a hitch. Unfortunately the MacOS X 10.4.4 Finder is junk, trying to view the Trash caused the Finder to lock up. And after emptying the trash the Finder locked up. What a joke OSX is... Anyway, it saved me 430MB of useless language files on my 40GB hard drive. Some people might not think that's a big deal, but I do! And it strips Uni Binaries now too! Sweet! Still has room for improvement. Would be nice if it.. * calculated the space savings and _then_ ask if I want to trash the files. what if i just want to know how much space all the japanese language files are taking up? * had derivative languages named as such. instead of "US English" it should say "English (US)", then I can sort by name and easily see all the english types Other than that, its a solid app. (Version 1.3.2)

CPRUITT "What a joke OSX is..." Compared to what? Windows? Linux? OS 9??? First, dont mistake the Finder with OS X. OS X is really an increadible Unix OS. Its got its strong & weak points, but overall its better than any alternative out there. Second, I've never understood the criticism of Apple's Finder. Granted there are plenty of things I wish it would do better, but its definately not the worst out there. Windows explorer is far more cumbersome & inconveniant than the Finder. I'm not much of a linux user but the GUI file managers I've seen for *nix platforms sure as heck dont impress me much and any of the above are better than a bunch of cd, cp, mkdir, & rm commands in the Terminal. If you really dislike it shell out the cash for something like Path Finder 4 as a replacement. (Version 1.3.2)

I reverted back to 1.2.9 both times and everything was fine. Also, is it possible that the Architectures scan is infinitely recursing because of the root volume's mount point at /Volumes/Macintosh HD? After 3 hours, I decided to go ahead and cancel the scan. INGMARSTEIN You probably have PowerPC 7447(A) aka G4+. This chip is identified as the architecture "7450" which is different from the "7400" architecture for the G4 chip (without the +). In this case, Monolingual unfortunately selects the "PowerPC G4" architecture for removal by default. iMovie '06 is a universal binary with a 7400 part, but not with 7450-specific code, so you're unably to run the executable afterwards. Lesson learned: for G4+ chips, I'm going to deselect both the G4 as well as the G4+ architectures by default. In the meantime, be careful not to choose "PowerPC G4". (Version 1.3.1)

It's great- typically takes a drive from 180,000 files or so to about 70-80,000. 100k files! Boggles the mind how much crap is used by localization, something 99% of the userbase never uses. ANONYMOUS Great program! While it's generally a good idea to customize the installation of your OS to not install unnecessary language files, Apple updates things fairly regularly. When you use Software Update to [for example] upgrade to a higher version of iTunes, that particular method of installation will just reinstall all those unnecessary languages. Plus, there's all those third-party programs out there that have multiple languages. If you don't use them, then who needs them? I think part of the reason that people are having so many problems with this app is that they don't scroll down to see that there's actually FIVE types of English listed: Australian English, British English, Canadian English, English [no country specified], and U.S. English. I made sure that both English and U.S. English [since, of course, I live in the U.S.] were unchecked. It seems quite likely that everyone who's had problems with Monolingual probably didn't specify which particular type of English to use. Though I hate blaming the victim... if you didn't scoll through and look at EVERY SINGLE ONE your options before doing something so potentially catastrophic as removing language resources, there honestly isn't anyone to blame but your own impetuous self. ANONYMOUS Of course if space saving is a high priority, you should also take better notice of the installation options in OSX. There's 1.1GB of printer drivers in 10.3. Do you really need all that? Nope. A default install of Panther is 3GB but after I'd deselected the components I didn't need (no point choosing iTunes or iPhoto as I had newer versions already etc) my install size was 1.4GB. Now THAT's a saving :) (Version 1.2.4)

THE MTB Its always worked great for me. The only problem I have had was because I was a DUMBASK and deleted the wrong keyboard file. My keyboard stopped working. My suggestion before you delete the input files is go to system>library>Keyboard Layouts and make a copy of that on your desktop. Make sure its named EXACTLY the same thing because if you delete the wrong file you won't be able to type but your mouse will still work. Then all you have to do is drag the folder from your desktop to the library and restart. (Version 1.2.4)

ANONYMOUS I'm pretty sure my System is back to normal. The problems I had were: 1) US Keyboard option was GONE despite the fact that I did not remove it. 2) Safari (of all things) was wrecked, would not open new window on startup and opening a new window would not work yet an "Untitled" window would show up in the Window menu. You could select the window and it would appear at that point, but would not load any web pages. I am not aware of any issues, but there could have easilly been more. 1) Had to type my password in the user field by trying every key on keyboard until I found the right combo to enter my password so I could reboot the computer when the restore disk prompted me. 2) Ran my PowerBook restore disk, and selected the option to restore my machine leaving the User/Network settings intact. 3) Safari WAS STILL messed up, so I decided to run Software Update for everything which took quite some time. That seemed to do it, I'm back on my PowerBook and writing this message from it. Hopefully I won't find any other oddities. I am done installing useless shit on my Macs. I knew I shouldn't have messed with this thing, but I did it anyway. Lesson learned. Nice coding MORONS! (Version 1.2.4)

BRIAN KENDIG I used to be a great fan of Monolingual. But the recent reports here of it eating more than it was supposed to worried me, so I tried Delocalizer instead. I've now thrown away Monolingual, because Delocalizer is MUCH faster (about one minute to run on my iBook/300, versus twenty minutes or more for Monolingual), and it finds and removes more unneeded foreign-language resources than Monolingual did. YOXI Here's an interesting thing. If you've no plans to use other language interfaces in OSX (i.e. you won't ever want your menus and message boxes etc. in more than one language), but, like me, you still want to write in more than one language, you might want to use Delocalizer rather than Monolingual. While both apps gets rid of unnecessary .lproj files, Monolingual also ditched the dictionary files for the non-saved languages, so I was no longer able to spellcheck in languages other than the one I kept, British English. I had to reinstall Panther to get them back, and then run Delocalizer to get rid of the unwanted stuff again, whilst preserving the dictionaries. So if you want to spellcheck in a particular language, either don't let Monolingual touch that language, or use Delocalizer instead. (Version 1.2.1)
