ZO219  I read comments such as the one below, recommending something called Little Secrets ... and how about these referrals to Together ... and I think the Mac community doesn't deserve DEVONTech.

I am embarrassed for you.

This is purely a GUI/interface comment :

I like the new Devon ball logo and think that the developers would be wise to use it as DevonThink/Pro etc... application icon ( Just color it differently for each type of release ) and loose the shell design.

Secondly:

Please use an interface designer to revamp the application - It is so Home made that it puts a lots of potential users off - Why do so many first time users say it has a steep learning curve ? Because of the ugly interface is confusing and not user friendly. It has zero WOW factor.

Look at barebones Yojimbo - It has hordes of pleasant comments and appeals to nearly everyone on first launch.

On a GUI scale of one to ten - DEVONthink is a very poor three out of ten.

IGAUCHO  I actually think the UI is pretty good. Sure it's not as flashy as Yojimbo, but it works just fine. It's not much different from the Finder actually.

MULTIMAGO  I agree to another user about the interface style. The program is great! but the cover is not easy to use, not clear. This program is the best tool for Artificial intelligence but only in the internal engine; The user need to work smoothly! more colours/shapes associations between functions and interface. The short way from my eyes to the imput. however I love DevonThink and I hope for the new interface :)

RUSSELL  UPDATED REVIEW - I've been using Devonthink since version 1.9.1 and I think its a great product. BUT, I have a real issue with SECURITY concerning Devonthink (its non-existant). Finally, I found someone else who offers a very similiar product with a selectable encryption level called LITTLESECRET (also found in MacUpdate). At $9.00 LITTLESECRET does the samething Devonthink does PLUS it offers a peace of mind PassWord Encryption. I wish I had discovered LITTLESECRETS sooner!

DOOBIEXX  Russel, those comments are really off. I agree with the user who brought up this argument that these apps such as together and little secrets are as good or better.

If you want a really flexible app go with something simple that can do encryption like your mac! mac's has native ways of encrypting items. File Vault of course but turn you can also use disk utility to make an image of where the info is stored and encrypt that vault... You would have to encrypt it so set it up where you have to enter the package to even get to the data and then after that put it where it needs to be. Simple applescript or automator action work.

app for just notes that has publish, encrypt, multi-databse, very smart app that lets you configure everythig you want but it is great for users who JUST USE NOTES, although. If there is an image it will copy over to inotepad once in a note do what you want with it.

Hope it helps someone.

T  Just noticed that this is a very memory hungry app. Around 50 MB real memory - or sometimes even higher - and 218 MB virtual memory. None of my other apps are this memory hungry!

ANONYMOUS  It's not that hungry. I find that DevonThink is typically using about 1/10 (yes, one TENTH!) the real and virtual memory that Safari is using.

*cough*

That's maybe indiciating Safari caches pretty aggressively ;-)

SJK  That's minimal, T, compared to DT Pro's memory usage on my iMac G5 with a 200MB database:

T  Great app for getting your files (pictures, movies, pdf, text, webarchives) into one database (which is an organiser, viewer and text editor). You can easily create groups and navigate your files and search for them. Filed items can be links or copied to the database folder. Really great. Though I wish that links to files that are packages (files that are in fact folders with files in them) or handled correctly - currently if you import them they show up as folder with files instead of just a link to the file.

RUSSELL GLEASON  OKay, I gave in a purchased the program. And although the program itself is absolutely brillant, backing up your data and then trying to access that information from another computer cannot be done thus making this program (at this time) very DANGEROUS to use and a absolute nightmare. Your information is store in its own special data base, if your hard drive fails, or if you try to do your work from home you can't access the information you've backed up. It's a time bomb waiting to explode. My take on this is wait until they imporoved upon this program and a 7.0 version is released, then it'll be ready for the market.

DAN SWENSEN  What? This is simply not true. You want a quick and easy backup solution? Select all your folders, export them. Boom, everything there is saved as .rtf with directory structures intact. Burn all those folders to disk.

Want to reinstate them into Devonthink? Import them back. It'll be just like you left it in a couple of minutes.

I know because I've had to do it, more than once, to swap a very sizable Devonthink library across two machines. It was easy and painless.

I fear this review is FUD.

ANONYMOUS  No ratings issued at this time. Although this program appears to be next to awesome, there is only ONE thing that is holding me back from purchasing this program. You CANNOT encrypt (or lockout) any files to keep unauthorized persons from examining its contents (for example, if a person downloaded your Devonthink Database and then wanted to look at its contents at a later time, what's to stop them?). Security capability is a really big issue for me. Sorry. - Russell

MTB  Long time user estatic with new version!

The 1.9 upgrade is bloody awesome. This is a great developer and the product is far superior to anything remotely in this category. The product spans so many categories and some which are undefined that any words to describe it fall flat.

*Huge* improvements over previous version, which was already excellent.

LAUP  The great strengths are the knowledge-management features and modern-browser-style access. Taken together with the services and related scripts, DevonThink is outstanding--and inexpensive.

The biggest shortcomings I see are: (1) a mediocre manual, when a really good one is needed; (2) poor features for writing notes compared with Circusponies or even Word 2004; (3) clumsy mechanism for sharing across computers.

Some features that I would like are: (1) style sheets for composing, so that all new notes use your preferred margins, etc.; (2) built-in outlining, with arrows for indentation; (3) a simple mechanism for having multiple data bases and for comparing contents of two data bases; (4)built-in functionality equivalent to what is now provided in scripts [some of this depends on Apple].

CHRIS HOWARD  been_burned_before... you don't have to store your documents in their database. They can be links only to the files on your hard disk; or copied to a folder in the DEVONthink preferences area. Both these methods preserve the file in its native format. Storing it in the database is actually recommended against in the manual.

This application is extra-ordinarily good value. In the future, all OSes will replace their data file systems with document management systems. If you want to experience the future now, and want to be able to easily file and find your email, documents, snippets etc, this is a must have program.

But, altho it's easy to use, you will need to read the manual.

DAN SWENSEN  I have a ton of creative projects (short stories, novels, screenplays, etc. with notes and bits of information for all of them) that I needed to have organized, and DEVONthink helped me turn a nighmarish jumble of directories and scattered text files into a workable, organized whole within hours.

For organizing and indexing data, this application cannot be beat, it is quite simply the best piece of software I have ever purchased for OS X.

ANONYMOUS  This application does not forgive any system crash. If it crashes you can be certain to get a lot of trouble. If you plan to use this tool for important and productiv data, be careful! The underlaying "database" is not what you expect from a database: it is simply not reliable!

I paid for this tool and I would like to get my money back...

LUIS DE JESUS  Where was this software when I needed it? I use it a lot now for school projects and I keep a database of all my work material in it as well. I appreciate the ability to not only store but search pdf files from research as well. I can't wait for the professional version.

...no, I don't work for DEVON Technologies.

SMOLK  Corrupted all my plain and rtf files after following the advice of DEVONthink itself after a database error occurred:

1. export all files,

2. delete the database-files,

3. re-import all files.

So I did with devastating results.

So:

1. never delete all database-files, but always keep a copy;

2. stay clear of DT until the software cannot corrupt your files so easily.

ANONYMOUS  This is a lot better than the first version I tried - much faster, better GUI, etc. But it has some major limitations for me. The biggest being the fact that it can't do searches on Chinese text. Also, I prefer to group content by how I use it, not by its subject matter. It also seems to lack some features I'd like, such as the ability to quickly see all search result hits in a particuar document, or to jump from one hit to the next easily via the keyboard. For now I'll stick with HogBay Notebook...

LYONELK  I agree totally with ncianca

I use to in combination with DevonAGENT and NoteTaker. And as niaca says they are really round out a personal information research and management solution.

The différences between DevonThink and Notetaker?

- DevonThink is great for the storage, recuperation and classement of any kind of materials and document.

- Notetaker is great for a project, a course management or an outline.

The two's are maybe similar, but in use they are more specialised in fact.

In final i'am waiting too the SE edition for is capacity to search concordance in a single project database rather than to the single database. Yet it will be more than PERFECT.

NCIANCA  DevonThink is the king of scrapbook managers. It's a solid, well written program with lot's of usable options. The user interface is great and makes the program very friendly. Little options like the "Group" to take a selection of items and put them in a folder are timesavers. The icon preview when a folder is selected is also extremely useful. The different ways to view the database give you options that don't exist in any other program. The concordance feature is fast. The only thing it could use is more export options, such as an XML/OPML option for database content.

I am anxiously awaiting the SE release which should be soon.

The combination of DevonThink and NoteTaker really round out a personal information research and management solution.

COCOANUTPASTOR  There is nothing that comes close this as a database for large amounts of text. The searches are intelligent. Stability is no longer a problem. If you want to make large amounts of text (for me 15 years of sermons) easily assessible, this is a major find!

TOMAK223  I've been using this application for about 1 1/2 yrs now. It has been completly stable during that time. Very easy to learn the basic functions. It has many advanced features, that I haven't taken the time to learn, or don't need. Search is very good, and fast. Archiving snippets of text or images, or nearly anything from the services menu is extremly handy.
