PETER DA SILVA  Dagnabbit, I *just* switched to using Time Machine for my backups and they go and fix at least half the problems I was having with Silverkeeper.

Oh well, maybe I can use it for my bootable backups.

ILGAZ  silverkeeper has different purpose, time machine has different purpose. Also the "speed" of time machine has some bad reasons like apple have chosen to do block level copy rather than file level copy so it has potential to carry problems with files to backup identically.

I don't see why wouldn't one use BOTH , TM and Silverkeeper. Silverkeeper for one time in a week offsite backups for example.

POMO  Use caution: silently fails with read-only files - Version: 1.1.4

A few months back I found that several of my C++ source files were not current on my backup. As a result, I lost several days of work. I traced this problem to the following situation:

1) SK saves a read-only file to the backup.

2) The original file is changed.

3) During the next backup, SK fails to copy the changed read-only file onto the read-only version on the backup disk.

This occurs even when you have set SK to "full privilges" by entering your password.

Such a situation is likely to happen if you use a source control system that leaves files locked.

In detail, during step 3) SK changes the permissions of the backed up file to writable, but then fails to copy the changed file. If, as step 4), you do a second backup, then the changed file will be correctly copied to the backup (because the destination file is now writable). The result is that all of your changed read-only files will be backed up only every other time!

This bug is very easy to confirm by setting up a simple backup of one folder to another on your local drive.

I had a lively email exchange with LaCie about this problem, eventually diagnosing and documenting it, and giving them a clear example. Unfortunately, their final communication was "Thanks for the feedback. We will consider for the next update." That was 15-May-2006, and SK still has not been updated.

I think SK is a fine program and appreciate LaCie for providing it for free. However, this bug will bite you if you work with any read-only files that change. Until LaCie fixes it, you'll need to run SK twice to insure that such files are correctly backed up.

I hesitated to post here, but since LaCie has neither acknowledged nor fixed this bug in five months, I hope this warning will save others from a backup disaster.

DGOMBAU  After struggling with Retrospect Express and Maxtor FireWire drive, I switched to a LaCie drive with Silverkeeper. Man, what a difference in backing up a boot drive. SK - 20 mins Vs. RE - several hours!

The SilverKeeper/LaCie boot drive booted first time. The Retrospect Express/Maxtor One Touch II combo, has always been temperemental. The first One Touch has been incredibly flakey.

In fact, Silverkeeper 1.1.4 will back up both the boot drive and a second internal hard drive for media files, with a single click.

GERWINPHILIPPO  I do not find this a very good backup tool:

1: The way sets work is very impractical: A set can only hold one directory. Which means that you have to have several sets, for Docs, Pics, Library items, etc.

Then, if you want to backup, you need to select the option "backup all sets", but that's not what I want, I only want to backup some particular directories. This is highly inflexible.

2: There is no option to include the full path in the backupdirectory. This is very inconvenient, because all users have "Documents" to backup, and now you have to create separate directories for all users to make backups for them.

3: Also, I cannot make the destination readonly to protect it from other users, because then SK fails.

4: The screen is very small, and long file names don't fit, but you cannot enlarge the screen. This is a beginners interface fault that only Philips Consumer Electronics makes usually, and they are very stupid indeed.

ERLANG  I finally solved my problem. Very strangely (at least for me), I had to use the terminal to rename the installer. When I changed the name directly on the desktop by clicking on the icon and deleting 1.1.3, the last part of the name 1.1.3 disappears on the desktop, but in the terminal, using the ls command, the name appears with .3 at the end. I don''t know why .3 is not removed and yet it does NOT appear on the desktop. Maybe there is a bug. So, I simply renamed the file within the terminal, and that worked.

Hope this would help someone with the same issue.

EDFRMVA1  Purchased and have Leopard. Have LaCie SilverKeeper. Used Apple Disk Utility to erase the Partition (volume) on the external LaCie HD I was going to use to copy my internal HD to create a bootable backup. Verified and repaired permissions and did the backup. When I go to System Preferences and select the newly created backup as my startup disk, it does not boot with 10.4.10. It tries to boot with a new startup of 10.4. How can I create a bootable clone of my internal HD? My plans are to make sure I have a backup of my internal HD on Partition (volume) on my external LaCie HD and then install Leopard on my second external Partition. But I can't get the backup to boot with what I have on my Internal HD.

Suggestions/Recommendations?

SAMBSB_98  SilverKeeper seems to have stopped backing up properly for me (using 10.3.8 and 10.3.9). If you check, you will see that newer files do not replace older files with the same names. It shows in the SilverKeeper log window that the files are being copied to the destination disk, but this is seldom true. A few random updates do occur, but not all of them. I have tried to back up to two different external drives, a LaCie Pocket Drive and an OWC case containing a Maxtor drive. The results are the same on both. I have tried this several times, both with the option called "ignore ownership on this volume" check marked and not check marked on the external hard drives.

MIKE  Whenever you perform a system update, there are several things you need to do to assure a proper backup:

- make sure that external drive is partitioned and formatted as Mac OS Extended

- if you recently did a system update/upgrade, previous system backups may have info, files, and permissions that are incompatible with the new system update. Always best to make a new, fresh backup to a freshly formatted partitioned drive. This is to assure there are no conflicts from the previous backup

- make sure padlock is unlocked in SilverKeeper Preferences, and username/password for user with admin privileges is provided

- make sure that "Ignore ownership on this volume" is NOT checked in the Get Info dialog for the destination drive

- make sure that source drive/volume is locally mounted drive; if wishing to make a bootable backup, that source is the drive you have booted from

RUSS  On my 1st try, I wasn't able to produce a bootable backup to my LaCie d2 external FireWire drive with SilverKeeper 1.1.2, even though everything seemed to work fine. I sent an e-mail to LaCie SilverKeeper support, and they responded in a few hours--pretty impressive. I also did another Q&A exchange with them via e-mail the next day--again, they responded quickly--and their suggestions solved my problem (which was on my end). Not bad for freeware, huh?

The SilverKeeper software is clean, easy to use and perfect for any Mac user who essentially wants to back up their hard drive and/or create a bootable backup. It also lets you schedule backups weekly or daily, and it can wake your Mac from sleep to do so. And if the Mac is off when a scheduled backup is supposed to occur, it does the backup on startup. Nice product!

ANONYMOUS  I bought a LaCie d2 FireWire external hard drive and used SilverKeeper 1.1.2 to back up my Power Mac G5 (1.8GHz, Mac OS X 10.3.7). I followed the instructions to make a bootable backup (on one volume of the two partitions I made on the LaCie drive with Apple's Disk Utility), and everything seemed to go fine. But when I chose the backup volume as my new startup disk and then restarted, it failed to start up. It couldn't get past the opening Apple logo screen; it just kinda hung there.

Anything that I might have done wrong? Beforehand, I repaired permissions on the source volume, formatted the destination drive to the default Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and in SilverKeeper preferences made sure the privileges were unlocked. Would appreciate any feedback, because SilverKeeper seems like a nice, clean backup app. Thanks!

RANDALL BECKWITH  I have a copy of SilverKeeper that backed up wonderfully the first time but since then, it will not make new back-ups of files that have been worked on. The only work around is to give the worked on file a new title. I have contacted SilverKeeper several times in an effort to find a problem and to ask if I have configured my software incorrectly. They responded once and then never again. Does anyone have a solution before I trash this software and go buy a product that works? Thanks.

ANONYMOUS  Unfortunately you didn't describe your settings, the type of files causing problems, whether you installed in OS X or OS 9, or LaCie's response to your query, so the following suggestions may be redundant.

Leave "Never Remove Files" in the Options tab unchecked. SilverKeeper is really intended for mirroring rather than archiving, its best to archive any files you intend to delete from your drive separately.

If you're making a backup of a bootable drive make sure that "Ignore Permissions" in the Info window for the destination drive is NOT checked, and SilverKeeper's privileges are not restricted (in Preferences).

Post again if you're stil having troubles.

TIM COX  I see the same behaviour when backing up to external FW drives with 'ignore permissions' set. The problem goes away (updated files get recognized an copied) if I unset that 'ignore permissions' flag (Do 'Get Info' on the whole drive and see check box.) I've sent my experiences to silverkeeper@lacie.com. I must say when I first ran, SilverKeeper warned me that I should do this but I ignored the advice! Overall I find SilverKeeper excellent.

ANONYMOUS  I had the same problem on an eMac and iBook. The cure: move (don't copy) the SilverKeeper folder in your User/~/Library/Application Support to Application Support in the main Library folder.

Oddly, if SilverKeeper sees a version of "LaCie Backup Support" in the User's Library folder, it gives the warning regardless of the version (mine was 1.1.2, I checked) whether or not the correct version is in the main Library.

ANONYMOUS  If you are writing backup data to a device that is storing other data as well, BE CAREFUL!

Make sure that you are backing up to an empty folder (i.e. MyExternalDrive:backup). Once you set this up, it will be automatic, and you don't have to worry about it.

I backed up to MyExternalDrive: and found all of my other data (iDVD projects, iMovie projects & audio source files) gone.

Otherwise, the software works fine. Just don't make the mistake I did.

ANONYMOUS  It seems to be a really good product but I continue to have a problem with the "Lacie Backup Support.app" continually crashing with an EXC_BAD_ACCESS (0x0001) and a KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000 after I exit SilverKeeper. Un-installing, deleting everything, repairing permissions and re-installing does not seem to work. This makes scheduled backups impossible to do and is rather annoying. Other than this problem, the software is great and does a good job.

SILVERKEEPER  Here are a few suggestions if you are having problems with installation or proper operation:

1. If using OS X, download the disc image version istead of the SIT archive. Same link as listed except .dmg instead of .sit or go to http://www.silverkeeper.com for all download links as well as release notes. Recommend reviewing all info at the website.

2. Repair permissions before installing!

3. If having trouble with scheduled backups, be sure to authenticate by unlocking in Preferences, and providing admin password, then try rebooting after installing.

4. Comments and questions welcome at the support address silverkeeper at lacie dot com

LKM  First of all, a comment: This is *not* an archive program, i.e. it doesn't allow you to make incremental backups. That means that you can't go back to a backup that you made *before* the last backup. SilverKeeper synchronizes your current data to your backup, it doesn't keep old versions of your data.

This doesn't mean that it's a bad app, though. I actually very much like it. It has an 'exclude'-list and scheduled backups, which is pretty much what most people need. You can chose to not delete files in that backup that you remove from your hard disk.

Unfortunately, it has a bug that renders it unusable on my Mac: I can't add files to the exclude list as all of them are greyed out.
