MACTINKER Hi! XPF was recommended to me by a list mod to help in installing 10.3 on a beige G3 AIO. I have asked Apple and they tell me that 10.2 will install and run on this Mac just fine. I went to the list in question looking for 10.2. But the list mod was very encouraging about the superiority of 10.3 over 10.2, so I tried to dl XPF4. I got a page of very strange code, and no actual dl at all. Thought you'd want to know about that. 1. Does anyone know what I might have done wrong in the dl process? I clicked the "Download now" button, that's all, and all that appeared to be necessary. Or maybe it can't dl to OS9? 2. If I can get hold of a set of 10.2 CDs, do I still need XPF? (Apple says no, just fyi, but if *users* have different actual experience, that's helpful to know.) 3. (Slightly OT) If I could just go altogether with X I wouldn't ask this, but: Does anyone have an opinion whether 10.3 is really so much better than 10.2 that I need to add to the complication of making the switch? It's going to be tight in the first place, as I need to partition the HD so I can have one side w/ OSX and the other w/ OS9, because I actually do use the built-in floppy and zip drives, both unsupported under all versions of X. Can't go get a USB floppy drive, because the AIO does not have USB ports, which are required by 10.3. Thanks for your time. (Version 4.0)

DAVID If you don't have a G3 or G4 upgrade card installed on your 8600, then OS 10.2 isn't going to install. The makers of XPostFacto posted that on their site. If you do have one installed, I have no idea why 10.2 (or 10.3 or 10.4 for that matter) won't install. (Version 4.0)

MACTINKER Is it possible that the cds you are using to install from are updates? You didn't mention what you're running on the computer now - is it a version of X or is it older? When I've run into problems such as you describe, it's usually been an update installation, not a clean install. This would put the situation out of the realm of XPostFacto and back with your OSX source. (Version 4.0)

9600 LIVES ON Question: Is it possible to do the Tiger install from an external firewire cased drive (Like a DVR-109), or one connected internally on one of those ATA cards that looks like SCSI to the system? Or should I get the CD- version of Tiger? I've had great results with XPF on 10.3.9 and previous. ANONYMOUS I have installed Tiger using my external firewire hard disk. The way I did it is closer to the way described in this article at MacOSXHints. Here it uses an iPod and have it completely erased to become an installer but erasering is not necessary at all. In my case I collected al my folders at one new folder named "My Stuff" and then restored the Tiger DVD image to the external hd without erasering it. My only problem was at booting up from this disk: only worked modifying the Startup Disk in System Preferences. http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050524104814419 (Version 4.0b4)

LEOPOLD PORKSTACKER I am sold on XPostfacto (although I still need to pay the author for this EXCELLENT piece of software). Although I have not tried out version 3.1 yet, version 3.0.x.x works beautifully on my mildly-upgraded Powermac 7500, in addition to two Beige G3s with the skanky built-in 2MB video. Thanks to Ryan Rempel et al, those of us with legacy "unsupported" Powermacs don't need to suck on the juicy Apple shaft financially and go buy a newer machine just to be up-to-date with the OS versions. This program is a must-have for all who own legacy systems. (Version 3.1)

I have a similar setup, a 9600 upgraded with a Sonnet Crescendo G4 800 MHz cpu board, and I'm running 10.3.9 just perfect (re-applying Security Update 2005-002 ironed out the Java quirks). Of cours, I took all the known "pre"cautions before and after the update, and used the Combo updater instead of the Delta (luckily my Internet connection is a fast one). Try and run the "Install everything" feature in XPF (Install menu, 4th item from above), and if you haven't tried the OSX Combo updater, run it on top of your actual installation, maybe this will help!
| Apr 19 2005 |
ANONYMOUS 10.3.9 delta update worked just fine here. And you're not supposed to be able to use the Startup Disk control panels, that's why there's an XPF application in the first place, instead of just a bunch of kernel extensions. (Version 3.1)

JIM SMITH You shouldn't use Start up disk in OSX or OS9 to tell the system what to boot up on, because then you will have OSX or OS9 writing to your PRAM and not XPostFacto, OSX or OS9 may change your PRAM settings and prevent you from booting OSX until you use XPostFacto again because the system will not be tricked anymore into letting your old computer boot. I know you cannot use start up disk in OS9 for this reason but i am not 100% sure about OSX as I only have one OSX drive to boot off of anyway so I will always use XPostfact to determine my boot drive. The XPostFacto support forums are now free, so feel free to make a name over there to get better support. forum.macsales.com (Version 3.1)

MACGURUGUY I think this is the version that has worked the best. Finally stable on PowerTower Pro w/Sonnet 800mhz G4 card. Keeps this machine and investment going for the long term. Ryan (the author) has definitely put in some long hours developing this software, and I can tell you that he has come quite a long way. This software actually works quite smoothly compared to a year or so ago (when I couldn't get it to work at all). Ryan is also frequently vocal in the forum associated with this software (which hadn't been the case previously). If you've got an Old World machine with a fairly speedy processor (I really wouldn't recommend using OS X on anything slower than 500 mhz), then this may be the time to make the leap to OS X. PowerTower Pro w/800mhz Sonnet G4 ATI Radeon 7000 Video PCI card (32MB w/DVI) Aria Extreme 802.11g Wireless PCI card Adaptec 2930BU SCSI PCI card (OEM) Matshita DVD-ROM internal All functioning in OS X except original floppy drive (who needs it?). ROB J. SHREAD Hi. I've been playing around with XpostFacto for a few months now on and off. I've got an 8600 and a 9600, both retierd. I've got a G3/300 board for them and 512 ram as well as an UWscsi/ATA66/usb all on the PCI bus. Originally I wanted to put OSX on the 9600 becuase then I could run an additional graphics board and a FireWire card. Panther wouldn't run on the 9600, I couldn't work out why for a while.. It'd bring up the Gray Apple but then just stall during boot. I worked out it was becuase both of my graphics boards were too old for Panther. I used the settings with in XpostFacto to try and fix this, the closest I got was half of the installation screen.. Until I come accross a beter PCI graphics board the 9600 is a no go for 10.3. Although I knew the graphics would be slow, I turned my attention to my 8600. After playing with configurations for a while, I worked out that I could run OSX of the UWscsi bus (PCI) as long as I set up a helper drive on the Mac's internal bus. Basically to act as a diversion during boot. I also had to slow down the boot procedure (throttle) to allow for this to happen before the Mac got upset. This worked, and so my 8600/G300 with 512mb is running Panther resonablly well. (I was suprised at how quick it was actually).. I had actually bought an additioanl 2mb of VRAM for the logic board.. but under OS9 it insists on using it for a second display on the composite video out regradless of what I tell it. OSX see's the full 4MB on the board and lets me run 1024/768 at 24bit. So, there you go.. One did One didin't, Nither straight forward. (I went to reagrange the drives in the 8600 last week.. won' even boot OS9 now) You win some ya loose some.. Cheers. (Version 3.1a3)

PETER DA SILVA Anything running OS X, no matter how slow, is worth more than the most powerful box running Windows, no matter what mere economics might say. Back in 2003 I "upgraded" from a P4-1.7 with 1G and 80G of hard disk to a 7500 upgraded with a Sonnet Crescendo G3/400, and I never looked back. I have a Mac mini now, but without XPostFacto I would never have taken that first step. I just reinstalled Windows on my P4 box and... it just sits there. ANONYMOUS Some of the comments here are rude. There is no need for that on a forum, ever. The original post was the author's opinion and it has some validity. To say his comments are worthless is simply not true. Getting other points of view on a topic such a this is a good thing. There is a time to move on, putting the past behind. I run XpostFacto on a Beige G3, and straight Panther on five iBooks, from an original Tangerine to a more recent 1.2GHz G4. When my son is done with a project on the Beige, I am dumping Panther and replacing it with Yellow Dog Linux. XpostFacto is a great experiment, and gives some breathing room to people with the need to run legacy systems. The programmer is brilliant. However, my Beige is becoming a more usable Linux file server. People have different ideas and needs. The original poster's comments are valid. So no rudeness, please. (Version 3.1a2)

MACGURUGUY Finally got this to work on my son's PowerTower Pro w Sonnet G4 800. Works well, however, there are major problems with USB. Cannot use USB mice without causing screen to freeze. Freezes occasionally, but much more acceptable than in the past (when I couldn't even get machine to boot). In fact, my mac G4 at work crashes more frequently. Keep up the work on this -- I think that you're finally close to achieving a truly functional and useful piece of software. (Version 3.0b12)

ANONYMOUS This worked! I have a PowerMac 7500 with a Sonnet G4 card (I think it's called Crescendo). I also have a 4GB external LaCie drive. I had purchased Sonnet's software for installing OS X, but I could only ever get it to install 10.1. Try as I might, it always got hung up whenever I tried to install Jaguar. In fairness, Sonnet's tech people were very responsive; I have no problems with their customer service. They had told me way back when to contact them by phone about the Jaguar problem, but I got sidetracked and moved on to other things. Today, though, I needed to install Jaguar on the old system, so I decided to give XPostFacto a try. It worked like a charm. I'm most impressed. (Version 3.0b12)

GIORGIO BULGARELLI It worked fine the first time I installed it onto my PB Wallstreet/G3 with a Sonnet G3/500 Upgrade. I even update Panther online. I duly registered for XPostFacto Support and the related confirmation was #1093118. Unfortunately, after a couple of months I began having problems and, since then, I was -definitely- unable to either reinstall Panther or even Jaguar. I was asking for help since Sun, 1 Aug 2004 17:32:44 +0100 addressing my requests to and but, unfortunately, I have not as yet received any sign of reply. Not even return-receipts to my messages. Finally, I was obliged to delete everything to install at least Jaguar onto my hard disk because all my efforts to do it over XPostfacto files were unsuccessful: Jaguar was very instable, all applications were closing unexpectedly and the system restarted each time without shutting off. REXRZER527 I am running MAChSpeed Control v..3.1 (for OS X) with Jaguar 10.2.8 with great success. In order for it to function, I had to remove *all traces* of Powerlogix CPU Director before the Daystar MAChSpeed Control would work correctly. You'll need to go into your StartupItems folder in System>Library to find some Powerlogix items--remove them with BatchMod or similar word editor. The Daystar CPU controller installs virtual firmware and works great! It correctly reports CPU and cache speeds, enables the cache, write-through, and makes your CPU upgrade perform excellentlly. PURRING ALONG IN 10.3.5 The OS X 10.3.5 update hasn't broken anything I've found on my two XPF-upgraded machines. Although I was updating from 10.3.4, I downloaded and ran the 10.3.5 combo updater. I ran the security update right before that (apparently not needed, as it was included in the 10.3.5 update). I ran the JAVA 142Update1 package afterwards. Everything's been working great for me for some time. About the only thing I could have asked for in the past would have been some sort of hardware compatibility scanning utility to use beforehand. It was a bit of a feat installing on a 9600 with old video cards. I was able to do it nearly-blind using one old card giving me mostly-unreadable dithered monochrome during the OS X install, switching to my other (different) ancient card afterwards for normal use. Neither card would work for both. The support forums were very helpful, but it would have saved considerable time to have a utility spot the more obvious (to the informed) potential problems. DAN Hey how did you get the A/V card to be recognized in OS10???
| Apr 28 2004 |
DAVE PURDY Well done, Ryan. Really nice. Just a few tweaks and improvements needed. Although technically still at alpha status, I have used XPostFacto 3.0a17 to install Panther (10.3 and 10.3.2, both upgraded later to 10.3.3) on two Beige G3's (530MHz and 420MHz). They are very usable now with Panther, running just the onboard ATI Rage Pro video. My main work computer (Beige 530MHz) is running Panther. It is snappy enough (not as quick as my MDD 1.25GHz of course) and seems a bit more responsive than Jaguar. Very satisfying results. I did have a few hiccups along the way. They were best avoided when I: 1). Freshly partitioned the target HD with separate OS 9 and OS X partitions (OS X partition within the 1st 8GB), 2). Installed 9.2 on the OS 9 partition first, booted into 9.2 and started XPostFacto's Panther-install process from there, 3) Directly after the first CD in the installation process finished and the computer booted Panther for the 1st time, I switched System Preferences>Energy Saver>Hard driver never sleep & Screen sleep after 1 hr. This seemed to eliminate/lessen the frequency of the video panics (mentioned at http://www.opendarwin.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1708 ). After that installation, booting (from both HD and CDROM) has been normal. The video panic was (black screen, unrecoverable from it) initially a problem - repeatedly half way through the second install CD the screen would go black and the installation would halt. The solution of setting the screen to sleep after an hr or 30 minutes was a counterintuitive one (for me at least), but it has continued to work for me. The video panics still sometimes appear, but only very infrequently (once a week or two). I am confident that Mr Rempel will find the source and a fix for this problem, just as he has solved some other issues. Another area that should improve as this software progress passes the beta stage is that of installation ease. I had success only when doing an install on a truly fresh partition - a complete partition of the entire HD into 2 or 3 smaller partitions. Perhaps in later versions one will be able to install without having to repartition the entire HD. My final item is a request... I hope that when the post beta XPostFacto is offered we can seemlessly and _reliably_ uprgrade our alpha or beta versions without having to reinstall Panther. This product is a good one. Version 2 was indispensible for those who wanted to run their pre-Beige machines in Jaguar. Now version 3 is a must for those of us who want to move to Panther with our beige boxes. I look forward to the finished product. It is well worth the $10 shareware fee. (Version 3.0a17)

YES, USE SUPPORT FORUM! One will be much more productive looking for troubleshooting help or posting bug reports on the tech support forums instead of here. For one thing, the author reads posts there and frequently responds, as do helpful users. For another, there are far more postings, with some grouping of categories and threading of topics. XPostFacto has worked well for me on several boxes now running 10.2.x. Now that version 3 is about to go from alpha to beta, I'll likely give 10.3.x a shot. (Version 3.0a17)

MICHAEL RIECHERT XPost is one of the best utilities in the mac scene and overall it is free. For two years I tried to install on my beige PowerPC G3 with 466 Mhz ( old Formac ziff card) and 640 MB RAM and ATI Radeon 7000 at first Jaguar and then Panther without any success. The way ended with MacOs 10.1.5. Yesterday I tried xpostfacto 3.0a15 and after twenty minutes I had installed Panther on my beige G3 without any problems. I updated to 10.3.3 afterwards. The system is fast and stabile with xBench value of about 36. I am now very happy, because I can use my old beige G3 with the latest system with very good speed. Actually more fun since I have the larger 17 inch Sony monitor. Now I must say that this has not been without some pain. But for most of us on these Legacy machines well worth the experience. Cheers, Rhodee (Version 3.0a15)

HP use xpostfacto from OS9 partition, I have not tested this for sure, but after reading a comment about lower profile memory interfereing with video memory, i removed it before install. Also, after xpf begins the install of osx, do not choose "erase all" install. Choose the default and continue. (Version 3.0a15)

ANONYMOUS readme says: "The main outstanding issue in 3.0a15 (and eariler) is that built-in video is not working in Panther on the Beige G3. Also, Panther is not yet working on Kanga (the original Powerbook G3)." How come it works on your beige G3 and not on other? Do you have an extra video card added to original G3? I have tried every single XPF to get Panther on G3 beige, always screwed up Jaguar. Starting panther from install CD never worked - brings only black screen. Have I missed something? I want Panther! :) (Version 3.0a15)

ANONYMOUS Works perpekt with my G3 beige. Bur i used an Panther 10.3.2 image (CCC) from my fresh iMAC G3 233 install. Most problems maybe occur at booting from Panther CD (with XPF). My G3 beige won´t boot at this way to install Panther. So i came to the idea to use an fresh Image from my IMAC after putting XPF Support (install extensions and bootx). The 1,9 GB image take some time over LAN 10MBit but the G3 beige start up perfekt , after backcloning the image with CCC to beige and setting this partition as startup (using XPF). SHANNON Just curious, your G3 in reference here, does it have onboard USB? That seems to be what is holding me up...I too have a Beige G3 w/ no USB...it'll take 10.2 all day long, but will not take panther, I assume it is due to not having the USB... So you're saying that this "issue" CAN be resolved w/ the mentioned download? I should be happy with the 10.2 alone, however, it's those security updates (100mb+) that keeps me curious... MIKE S. Testbed: G3/400 (Upgraded Power Macintosh 8600/300) running Mac OS X 10.2.8 with 464 MB RAM Summary: Let's be honest; a new computer is expensive. Five hundred dollars will buy you a pretty good PC but five hundred dollars is not pocket change. Buying a new Mac is an even bigger investment and nobody likes to get rid of a perfectly functional computer. Enter Ryan Rempel, creator of XPostFacto, an amazing combination of OS X kernel extensions (KEXTs) and a GUI front end that allows you to modify your Mac's Open Firmware and send Mac OS X start up commands. XPostFacto achieves what Apple refuses to do; allow a wide range of PowerPC 604 (or better) Macs to install and run Mac OS X, breathing new life and functionality into the quality hardware Apple customers have invested premium dollar in. Here is how it works, you download XPostFacto, double click the application, select an OS X boot disk (be it CD or HD) and click Restart. XPostFacto takes over from there and it works incredibly well. If you dig deeper into the application you'll find options to designate an input and output devices via Open Firmware. This worked great for me as I have a PCI Radeon video card and as of XPF version 3 alpha 11 I now get the white Apple boot screen where as before I would see nothing but black until the "Welcome to Macintosh" Aqua progress bar would appear. It's a little touch, with some useful benefits, that makes the system feel more complete and less like a hack. Advanced Users may opt to boot OS X into verbose mode or see any kernel panic info; even access the debug data that only a developer could love. The execution is done with such beauty and ease that it completely belies the technical difficulty of what has been accomplished with this utility. Ryan Rempel is, in my opinion, an unsung hero of the Macintosh community. This is a person who has allowed thousands of Mac users to be a part of this new Macintosh renaissance. People who Apple has willfully left behind in a bid for higher profit margins as they continue to intentionally obsolete perfectly functional computers by removing existing support from new Mac OS X releases. XPostFacto is not perfect, some features simply do not work under Mac OS X while they do under Mac OS 9 but one can hardly hold this against the utility or it's author. Simply put, XPostFacto increases the value and longevity of your "legacy Mac" and allows you to experience all of the incredible work that Apple's software engineers have done without requiring you to needlessly spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars on new hardware that you may not require right now. Don't get me wrong, Apple's new hardware is amazing but I simply do not need a new machine for anything when my upgraded 8600 handles all tasks well; This is a testament to Apple's engineering prowess but their actions with regard to Mac OS X proves they are a large corporation like any other. Mac OS X on your Pre-G3 Mac! Simple to use interface with powerful options. Now able to be used from Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X It's almost unfair to mention any because this utility is constantly doing the impossible without a guidebook but in the spirt of balance... Some features won't work on some models (e.g.. sleep, system wide volume control, use of built-in video inputs) so be sure you read all release notes. May require some hardware changes and/or upgrades. (e.g.. I had to switch my internal SCSI drive to the slower SCSI 1 BUS to allow it to boot as it would halt when attempting to communicate with the disk on the Fast SCSI 0 BUS) Current version has issues with G3 L2 "backside" cache and defaults to disabling it (enabling it caused a kernel panic at boot on my machine but another utility, CPU Director, may have enabled it again. This is unknown as System Profiler may be giving me bad info) Bottom Line: I have nothing but respect for Ryan Rempel and praise for XPostFacto. If you've got a PowerPC based Mac (no 601s or 603s, sorry.) that Apple has abandoned then give XPostFacto a try so you to can leave Mac OS 9 where it belongs... in the past. (Version 3.0a11)

C B PONTON Ryan, you have done a BRILLIANT job with 3.0a11 so far, bar the L2/L3 cache config and on-board video glitches!! I have used it to successfully install Panther on my Beige G3 Desktop (Rev.1), which I use as my main office computer since buying it new in 1995, alongside a less-used 1GHz Windows PC!. It is fitted with a Sonnet G4 500/250 MHz 1 MB L2 backside cache (2:1 ratio), 768 MB RAM, Acard 6280M ATA/IDE PCI card, USB 1.1 PCI card, Maxtor DiamondMax Plus D740X6L060J3 60 GB HDD, external SCSI ZIP 250. I did not remove/change any of the above before running XPostFacto, which successfully installed Panther in the 1st 7GB partition (required) on the Maxtor HDD. It did so with L2/L3 config "on" as far as installing system from Install CD 1 but would not re-boot properly (ending up with "blue blank screen freeze") in readiness for Install CD 2. With L2/L3 config "off", the install and re-boot sequence worked without a hitch! I used "0 throttle" and "force old video drivers" with verbose mode. I also tried using Sonnet X Tune-up 1.2.7 to enable the L2 backside cache after installing OX 10.3 successfully. IT DID NOT WORK and in the process corrupted the formerly successful Panther install, preventing cold-booting even via XPostFacto! So after another full (except for X11) Archive and Reinstall, I used the Powerlogix Cache Control X 2.1b4 application to enable the L2 backside cache. I then Software Updated to OS X 10.3.2 and ran SpeedStart to cure the 10.3.2 slow start problem. All in all, it has only taken 15 hours to go from running OS X 10.2.8 full install to running OS X 10.3.2 full install with all current on-line Software Updates loaded, with everything (i.e. hardware and software) running as it did under OX 10.2.8! - NOT BAD. Many thanks, Ryan. Keep up the good work!!! (Version 3.0a11)

MACGURUGUY A 'non' mac guru is just that. I gave my opinion of this product based on my experience. He made his comments as a political stab at my freedom of speech. The fact is that this whole product is a "wannabee" effort, because all of the machines it supports are no longer supported by Apple. YET, I applauded its authors efforts (this keeps getting ignored). If you want an honest opinion, all you have to do is read the comments, and make a decision for YOURSELF. I am a Systems Administrator, with two completely installed and networked mac systems in the last 6 years, which have been HIGHLY complimented. I deal with installation of software on a regular basis. My decisions to use a piece of software, both at work and home, is based on ease of use and installation. However, I would be willing to bet that a 'non' mac guru falls into the label of "computer geek". These people expect the rest of the normal world to understand and accept their intellect for wasting an entire day installing a piece of software, just to say it worked. Most of us have lives that demand us to use our time wisely. Therefore, the real question for using this software is: Are you a geek, or are you just looking to use your computer for work and pleasure? And by the way, the nickname 'macguruguy' came from my former boss -- who introduced me to people as such. (Version 3.0a9)

ON UNION SCALE? If it takes you too long to get something done to be justfied at your hourly rate, the speed at which you troubleshoot, it may be that the rate you're paid, and the way you multitask your skills are as much of the problem as the potentially unviable hardware. From the installations I've done, the speed of older CD-ROM drives was a bigger time eating issue than complications. Using a faster external drive for installs helps. Like a good cook in a restaurant, you've got to multitask well to earn your keep. Don't stand and stare at the turkey baking, the drive formatting, the install running, the machine booting etc. etc. Get other things done while that happens. It may take X hours before a turkey is done, but it does NOT take X hours of labor to do it! Same here. If lesser paid staff can do something, deligate the task. Shuffling PCI cards & DIMMS, zapping cuda or PRAM etc isn't rocket science. If you do spend a fair amount of time troubleshooting one install, what you learn should speed doing the same thing to other machines if you're really managing a bunch of them. Save time by getting help and sharing your findings on the support boards instead of complaining here. You seem a bit arrogant towards "geeks". Rates paid frequently are not an indication of skills, regardless of what name someone is given. Plenty of open-source contributors are extremely talented. Some GIVE time away freely, but that doesn't mean it isn't quite valuable. More respect and supportiveness is due. If you're qualified to do so, I urge you to consider getting involved with open-source projects. Yes, you'll be giving something away, but you'll likely find people giving back by helping you too. That's efficient use of resources. And it is a way to be appreciated at more than a couple of sites. And letting the world see your skills may also open doors you didn't know where there. Interact, share. (Version 3.0a9)

MACGURUGUY Fact is that I'm running Panther (10.3.1) RIGHT NOW on a G4 Gigabit Ethernet machine at 1.4 Ghz, and 1GB RAM. This WHOLE setup cost me approx. $1000. There comes a time to get rid of the old legacy equipment and move on. Ask these people who have rated XPostFacto as 4+ stars how much time they've spent installing it and tweaking it to get it to run right OR to install. Also ask how much money they've spent on different video cards, hard drives, controllers, etc. My OPINION is that in the long run you'll be much more satisfied to upgrade your hardware and save yourself the aggravation. MACGURUGUY Don't waste your time with this program. While it is a brilliant effort, you will be far less stressed to purchase an actual G4 machine and upgrade it to your liking. I tried this program with two PowerComputing clones (for about six months), neither of which would run PROPERLY with Jaguar. I then purchased a G4 off of ebay, upgraded it with a 1.4 Ghz G4 chip, and installed Panther, which ran perfectly the first time. (Version 3.0a9)

CONTENTED This program definately has been far from a waste of time for me. I've used 2.25 and 10.2.x on several G3-upgraded 7x00 series machines with excellent results. Stability has been excellent, and performance has been quite reasonable. I did find it pays to have plenty of ram, and to use a halfway reasonable hard drive (4 gig 7200 rpm, earlier ones . I have a Power Computing machine, but between its slower cpu and the trouble I had just using OS 8.6 & 9 that I didn't even consider trying OS X on it. I had to go to great pains just to get an ethernet card to work. Some have had good results though. I'll agree that a used G4 isn't that expensive anymore and is a good option for many, but there's still nothing to prevent many of the earlier machines from living a useful life with OS X. A few configurations, like yours apparently, may not cooperate. But that's no reason to discourage the rest of us from giving it a shot. As for posted issues, don't forget some are reporting them with the latest ALPHA release which has been undergoing significant changes. Except for the beige G3 and the Wallstreet, most others will do quite well with the heavily tested version 2.25 (go to the More Info page, and find the link in the version history). 2.25 does require a separate util be run to enable cache. You'll be more helpful if you restrict your negative comments to specific issues that might be resolved. General negativeness and personal comments help no one. The forum on OWC is the place where feedback is likely to Ryan (the developer). Motivation for using older hardware varies. I like to help keep hardware useful and out of the landfill as much as I can. I like to help low-income friends get online. I like to give people machines that'll get them moved from Windows to Mac OS X. (I'm also getting some owning newer Intel boxes to switch to Mandrake Linux) If you're much more skilled than I am, perhaps you might consider helping to create Darwin drivers for unsupported hardware (various cards etc). If you have hardware to slow to run OS X well, you might try Mandrake Linux 9.1 PPC. Linux has lower overhead, and those with limited funds can get plenty of software without resorting to piracy. SPEEDING ALONG There's some sort of problem specific to your your configuration. My G3 upgraded 7500 works great (running 360 Mhz with buss at 45 Mhz, 512k cache at 240 Mhz - the card was shipped as 375Mhz and half-speed cache & 50 Mhz buss, but slowing the buss solved a stability problem under 9 & X and raising the cache speed more than made up for the otherwise slower settings). I've had similar excellent results on all of the machines I've upgraded, except one 9500. It was much slower and jerkier in OS X than other machines of similar or even slower CPU speed. I believe a very old video card was at fault. Not all configurations work or work well, but many do. (Version 3.0a9)

As a test I upgraded to 10.2.8 on another drive using XPostFacto. The install went smoothly, but it runs like a dog. Very slow. It benchmarks at about half the speed as the upgrade from Sonnet. HAPPY ON 10.2.8 Cache not being enabled gives a big drop in performance. If XPostFacto won't enable it, perhaps CPU Director (replaces Cache Control X) can. I found it worthwhile to register for the XPostFacto forums hosted by OWC. There you can provide feedback that Ryan will see. Since you're not trying to run 10.3, you might also prefer XPostFacto 2.25, instead of the less-tested alpha of version 3. (2.25 does require another app to enable the cache) (Version 3.0a8)

ANONYMOUS Andreas - The problem with the boot screen not displaying is due to the system architecture rather than the Radeon PCI card. Since the Radeon is driven by a kernel extension, it does not show any display until late in the boot process, once these extensions have loaded. I have a G3 with a Radeon 7000 PCI and work round the issue by temporarily switching back to the built-in display card when necessary. You can always run fsck by logging in as console if you don't want to bother switching cables. (Version 3.0a8)

ANONYMOUS It does work, all that you need to do is reset the PRAM and NVRAM at startup. That was my problem on a G3 B&W, it only needs the kernal to support additional resolutions. (Version 3.0a8)

Reboots but with no screen(, even after a lot of coffee cups.) Using ALT-Apple P-R to delete the parameter ram: I get the OpenFirmware on Boot. Typing "bye" turns off the screen and here we go. How the erase the NVRAM ? Am I on the good way ? (Version 3.0a10)

DAVID I just installed OS 10.1.5 onto a PowerMac 8600/300 and it works GREAT, FAST and appears to be very stable. Hint: I had to the throttle to 24; no other setting would work. (Version 2.2.5)

THOMAS I just successfully installed 10.1.4 on my old PowerBase with the original 603e @ 180 Mhz on a SCSI disk. It works very well, albeit painfully slow. A more recent graphics card would most likely help. (Version 2.2.5)

ANONYMOUS Awesome software by Ryan Rempel is giving new life to thousands of pre-G3 (daughtercard, PCI-based) Macs. Thank you, Ryan, for writing XPostFacto and thank you Other World Computing for giving Ryan a showcase for this fantastic software. (Version 2.2.1)

PHRIPLEY This great little utility has turned my otherwise useless beige 8550/G3 250 into a great little server (it's plenty fast too as long as I don't log in to the GUI). The software is well supported and regularly updated. While Macupdate lists it as "Free", in fact users are encouraged to pay $10 as a shareware fee. Well worth it. Way to go Ryan! ANONYMOUS Thank you, for writing, coding xpostfacto for me. I could not have installed osx without it. I have updated osx and have not encountered any gliches until 10.1.5 when I have had to logon as a user. I have never been anything except an admin. Is this an update to the coming jaguar update or an other charge which I will have to incur to keep my mac.com name. (Version 2.2b14)
