XENOPHILE  WTF is Microsoft's problem with naming this driver? Their website says "IntelliPoint 7.01". The downloaded disk image is labeled as "Microsoft-Mouse-d260". Mount the disk image and within it is contained a file called "Microsoft Mouse Installer". The Finder's Get Info shows version 1.0.

I only installed the MS driver to see how it compared to my old workhorse, USB Overdrive. It worked well enough but I'll definitely be sticking with USB Overdrive.

FRANCIS  This version recognizes the Laser Mouse 6000, but there are 5 buttons on the mouse and the software only sees 4. I went back to an older 32 bit version, but it is a real pain to uninstall the new version once it is installed.

STAR-AFFINITY  Aha, check the website, and it reads:

”IntelliType Pro and IntelliPoint for the Mac version 7.0 is compatible with the 32-bit version of Mac OS® X 10.6 (Snow Leopard™). So, one the 64 bit version is done their won't be any limitations (I guess).

MACINEN  What are you (or some of you) complaining about? Just because it's from Microsoft? Didn't you know there is mac-people in MS who are committed to doing mac-things.

Anyway, this driver works very well with my new Arc Mouse (white), amazingly solid driver. One of the good things is that there is this option "handled by mac os" in every choice of buttons (one advantage compared to f.ex. SteerMouse). Keep up the good work!

DER~BOT~HAUS  Well. I love my IME 3.0 with my Mac and these drivers have always corrected the really lame acceleration algorithms Apple does to their mice drivers. Can't ever use Apple drivers again.

Stop with the textbook "Once again MS..." makes you all look like raving sheep. MS's Hardware is top notch and I have never had an issue with their drivers.

RAYDEEN  Once again, another backward step for Microsoft. Some, but not all of the previous Buttons settings I had been using for years now will not work. And for some bizarre reason, the Preference Pane comes up with the Wheel Button set by default to "Exposé - All Windows," a feature I have never used and currently have disabled. If I try to change it in the global settings, it goes right back to Exposé. Did Apple pay them for this? Why does this software continue to get worse instead of better?

RUDHY  My Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth is working only partially with this. I can't get horizontal scrolling to work and I can't use keystrokes with only modifiers (ex. shift, alt). I used to have cmd under my thumb and IntelliPoint for Mac doesn't allow me to set this (I CAN do this under Windows - not 'cmd' of course, but setting for example 'shift' under 4th button works great ).

Anybody have solution for this? System 10.4.10, IntelliPoint in newest version (6.21), but I've tried 6.2 as well.

ISKIPPY  Colour me impressed.

The first thing you will notice, as others have pointed out, is that Microsoft has finally implemented these as fully featured preference panes, rather than just launchers for applications. This is the way it's supposed to be; score one for Microsoft.

Also, there are a lot more commands available to assign to either keyboard keys or mouse buttons. Exposé commands are now offered natively under both IntelliType and IntelliPoint, as are commands for Spotlight, Dashboard, and Front Row.

I am quite impressed with this update. Say what you will about Windows and Office, but this is a solid driver and configuration package for Microsoft's hardware.

AIRSMURF  Since version 5.x Microsoft has added a whole slew of mouse assignments including commands for Exposé, Spotlight, Dashboard and Frontrow. Most importantly, they've added "Handled by Mac OS" as an assignment, finally solving the long standing problem of users being unable to close Firefox browser tabs with the middle mouse button.

Also the Microsoft Mouse Preference Pane is finally a card carrying member of System Preferences. No longer is it just a launcher for a separate manager application. Not that this makes much functional difference – it just used to be mildly confusing and just not very Mac-like :)

TONYBOY  I have to admit, I haven't been very impressed with Microsoft's Mac products in the last little while, and I was prepared to dislike this product from the start, but so far so good...

The feature set is fairly complete and the interface is nice and clean as well...

The only oddity is that I'm actually reviewing the newer 6.1 version, which isn't posted here on MU, but is available from http://download.microsoft.com/, not in the standalone package (v6.0) but as a bundle for the IntelliType keyboard. Odd...

FITZAGE  I was happy to see that this now supports my older Intellimouse Explorer, which 5.1 did not. However, it gives bogus battery readings, and when told to remind me in a week or something, it pops right back up. Sometimes, deselecting the checkbox to tell it not to remind me works, but after restarting my computer it kept spawning a whole bunch of notifications, and unchecking the checkbox would only make them disappear briefly.

It's very annoying. I'm disabling it for now.

M PREWITT  Seems to work well. Have had no problems. It's just a run-of-the-mill mouse driver with some configuration options for various MS mice. Features are presumably dependent on which mouse you own.

Is it just me, or is anyone else irked by the fact that there are never ANY release notes for the various incarnations of this driver since about version 4 or so?

SCOTT  From the website:

IntelliPoint software enables you to customize the unique features of your Microsoft® mouse. You can reassign mouse buttons to perform commands, shortcuts, and application-specific functions. You can also modify mouse settings, such as pointer speed and updated horizontal scrolling.

My guess is that is has to do with improved horizontal scrolling.

DARREN  Installed on my PB - I use an Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 with it. The driver worked fine at first, no loss of features; however, for the first time ever I began receiving messages that my signal was low - which is not the case.

Messages kept popping up with increased frequency - just like on my Windows box.

Then last night I began experiencing an odd slow-down to the tune of "click", wait 5 seconds, then what I clicked would activate or whatever.

Rebooted, installed 5.0 drivers, all things back to "normal" with zero oddities.

And yes, I'm a zealot for system maintenance (permission repairs, cache flushing, etc., via Cocktail), so my system is in excellent shape. The only thing different was the 5.1 driver on my system, nothing else. While it worked, it didn't work well enough to keep, nor did it offer anything the 5.0 driver couldn't do.

The new drivers won't recognize the mouse as anything other than a standard wheel mouse, therefore I have no control over the forward/back buttons on the side. WHYTOI  You can actually map button 4 and 5 (or any other button) to work with Expose. The trick is to first map the mouse buttons to certain key/key combo eg. Fn 9, 10, 11. And then go over to Expose and map those specific key/combo to the respective Expose actions.

Just need to use a bit of brain here. Hopefully the enxt version to MS's driver offering would offer a more direct solution.

BILL  Installed the software, rebooted, spent the next eight hours trying to get my B&W to boot again. Finally, after repeated PRAM zaps, managed to get it to boot to the Panther CD, so I was able to erase the disk & reinstall.

My advise: avoid this like *poison*. If you've got a M$ mouse, use it without the driver, or toss it and get a good mouse.

ANONYMOUS  My Intellimouse Explorer (which formerly was perfect with OS 9 software) when upgraded to the X 5.0 driver works with OS 10.3.2, except for two problems. The cursor now fails to automatically move to the default position on the next small screen, after I, for example, close a document. Secondly, the speed of scrolling, instead of responding to the analog scale that is illustrated in the set up, has only two speeds, slow and fast. Can these be fixed?

AG90KEN  Do not install this driver if you do anything more than basic web browsing or word processing. The ability to map keystrokes to wheel movement has been removed and really cripples the functionality of this mouse. I have reinstalled 3.1 and had to remap all the wheel settings because 5.0 didn't support them....so they were lost. Save yourself the heartache and stay with 3.1.

ANONYMOUS  This driver makes OS X 10.3 crash like mad. It starts out okay, but eventually you're computer won't be able to wake from sleep, startups will hang and after awhile your computer won't startup altogether. I'm curious to know if anybody has had as much grief with this driver as I have. I'm on a Dual G5.

JOAO NEVES  Driver works fine here BUT....

feature to assign keystrokes to the scroll wheel has been removed.

I really need this feature - it lets you use the scroll wheel in apps that do not support it natively (Lightwave...)

I have lost the old driver and can't download it with the link posted........

Anyone know where I can get it?

ANONYMOUS  For all of those who have lost functionality. You need to use the Applications ->Utility -> Intellipoint Uninstall. Restart. Make sure Classic isn't running and reinstall the driver. This brings back all the old options.

ROBERT PAEGE  This driver has disabled some mouse functions in my favourite game, Everquest. Before this driver i could "strafe" left and right using the three and four buttons on the intellimouse. I can't do that anymore and i can't find a way to make it work. I'm going to have to go back to the old driver.

MIKE  I don’t understand the reason for this driver, I use the current one (3.1) in OS X. I loaded the new driver (5.0) on my iBook and compared it the older version on my G5, the Wheel tab, which allowed you to customize what the wheel does when you click it is gone. I am staying with the old one until it causes problems.

What’s lost in the Wheel tab:

Roll Wheel

Forward and Backward – being able to assign how many lines to move up or down in either direction

Press and Roll Wheel

Forward and Backward - being able to assign how many lines to move up or down in either direction

This is a great feature that has been replaced by a generic “Scroll Speed” slider

Why?

MASTERKEW  So, ah, you know that you don't NEED to use these drivers, right? if you can 'handle' only have ing an equivalent of a 2 button mouse and scroll wheel then OS X supports the mouse just fine.

Far better than the official drivers. Every time I install Microsoft's drivers the movement gets choppy.

*shrug* I doubt I'll bother downloading them.

ISKIPPY  My god, what a pile of crap! Thanks for making scrolling with my scroll wheel incredibly painful!

I used to have my scroll wheel set to scroll three lines at a time when rolled, and one page at a time when I held the wheel button down. Well, they removed that feature, and replaced it with the slider to set basic scroll speed, and accelerated scrolling, which disables the aforementioned slider and makes each roll of the scroll wheel scroll perhaps half a line at a time.

Thank you, o anonymous one, for pointing out the older drivers! I'll be more wary the next time I "upgrade" a Microsoft product!

ANONYMOUS  If some of you would stop whining for just a couple of seconds, you might notice that, after you open the MS Intellimouse app, there is a HELP menu. All you have to do is move your MOUSE up to the HELP menu, and select USER GUIDE. And, they actually did a very nice job of documenting it. All you have to do is follow this "new" Apple convention (hardly new), and seek out the help menu.

By the way, the sarcasm wasn't directed at those here with legitimate problems.

DBOROD  This upgrade includes no READ ME file or changelog. I poked around inside the PKG (the only item on the disk image) and there is nothing useful.

The Microsoft web site contains no information (as far as I was able to find) about what bugs are fixed (if any) with this version, what features (if any) are new in this version.

I guess we're just supposed to automatically upgrade and be thankful that Microsoft has deigned to release a new version.

ANONYMOUS  To Bruce Giancola- This might be a problem with the mouse hardware. I had a similar problem where after the mouse worked fine for over a year, it began to have dropouts where it just went dead, then sometimes came back (sometimes it didn't). There seems to be a known problem with these MS mice where the cord comes loose inside the mouse. I contacted MS support (who was actually very helpful), and after having me test a number of things (update software, test other computer), eventually sent me a new mouse under the lifetime warranty that the IntelliMouse has. Plugged the new mouse in and the problem is completely gone.

BRUCE GIANCOLA  When using the IntelliMouse for a while, my USB port becomes inoperable. I can switch ports and it will operate for a while but then again become inoperable. I am using the IntelliMouse on a Dual 1.25 Ghz Power Macintosh with silver front and am running OS X 10.2.6. I have switched back to the standard Apple mouse and have not experienced the same problem.

ELANGO  I also don't see what's new over v. 3.0 of the drivers. But 3.0 and 3.1 do have an uninstall feature -- slightly hidden in the Utilities subfolder of the Applications folder. Now if only there was a way to have plug-n-play for the mice..

RAFAEL  The programmer for MS's mouse drivers is the same person that made the highly acclaimed USB-Overdrive for OS 9 and X (although his IntelliPoint work only includes X). I found these drivers just as acceptable and configurable as USB-Overdrive, it's free but unfortunately detects if you're using a MS mouse or not. If it weren't for the crappiness of MS's optical mice (and I've had so many of them it's not even funny!) I'd definitely use this software.

Well... unless MS comes out with a corded dual optical I'll stick with my dual optical from Logitech (and USB-Overdrive).

ANONYMOUS  This driver causes a SEVERE kernel task usage when PowerChute PE is installed, and as is typical for Microslosh software, there is no uninstall feature. Furthermore, any support request requires their crummy .NET crap. I'll keep my privacy, thank you.

Get yourself a Logitech mouse instead.
