MANUTX  I upgraded to MacOS 10.6 on Friday, August 29th. All of my Direct Mail files will NOT open in versions 1.8.3 or 2.2.1.

Is anyone else having this same issue?

Regards,

SCOTT.GARDNER  Very Mac-like, easy to use, and functional. I couldn't get the MySQL connection working, though, and emailed their support but never received a response. Just as easy to dump my query to a text file and import it, so it's not a big deal. But the lack of response from support is discouraging. I would like to get the MySQL connector working and then see additional development in being able to set up custom/condition queries (e.g., IF title = 'md', 'Dr.', '') to create dynamic message fields.

JOGH  Great product in theory. Not attentive to support requests. I would not class this as a professional solution.

NMDS  Totally agree, support especially for their email delivery system is not suitable for professional use.

ATLASSLIPPED  I really want to love this software, as it seems to be a great answer for those with needs to complex for the likes of ConstantContact.

First, the Good:

List management is great and fairly seamless. It's a bit scary that your auto-management only syncs when your computer is online, but it's not a big deal. Works well.

The eThree mailing service is generally very good during the free trial, but after that, it's a bit pricey. May be worth it given lightning speed and good deliverability.

The ablity to turn a webpage into an email by just dropping in the link is brilliant. I've seen other implementations of this that continually failed or didn't get it quite right. In this one, what you see in Safari is *exactly* what you get.

The Bad:

Don't use this if email is time-sensitive or mission-critical for your business. Once, eThree mailing service was down without notice. And the response was a pretty weak "oops." Cold comfort when you have a weekly email newsletter with revenue attached.

And the program is buggy. After a couple updates, we got an error warning every time we booted up, but without apparent problems. Always clicked to send info to publisher.

But in two different cases, about a month apart, after taking an upgrade, the program would endlessly cycle and crash on boot. And guess what -- That means you can't even get your data out.

Customer service always has the same pattern: Quick response asking for the logfile followed by radio silence of 24-48 hours. Meanwhile, you're stuck.

On the most recent, we were enterprising enough to dig through Time Machine for an old version which we finally got working.

A shame. It's a program with great potential, but its flakiness makes it a no-go.

E3SOFTWARE  Thanks for the review. To shed some light on the issue, we notified the poster (atlasslipped) that the crashing problem he experienced was traced back to an error in Apple's frameworks. Certainly we regret the problem, but our hands our tied as it's Apple's code.

On the other hand, it appears the problem is not widespread, as only one user has reported this kind of problem.

Version 2.1.3 fixes several issues directly related to application stability.

JAN13  This application is just OK and work ok ... The only problem I see is price structure compare to MaxBulk Mailer which comes with much more useful tools as package for mailing and keep price steady !

Due to upgrade I have lost the old version of Direct Mail and now I am pushed by developer to pay fee for new version since previous version I did have is gone and not anywhere on www .... Hmmmm definitely I do not like these techniques.

E3SOFTWARE  You can see a price comparison between Direct Mail and MaxBulk at http://ethreesoftware.com/directmail/feature.php?f=coreosxcomp.

We feel that you're getting a lot more with Direct Mail for the same price as MaxBulk Mailer.

We're certainly not in the business of "pushing" anyone to upgrade. If you still need the old version of Direct Mail, feel free to email us and we can send it along.

Thanks,

Jonathan

RPPHOTO  After buying the Pro version and trying a few mailings, I am very impressed. It's now so easy and so fun to make a great quality mailing with reliable tracking information, I just can't wait to make my next one. I bought a 7,000 (well, 4,000 have emails) name list from FreshLists, which you can export from their FileMaker self-running database, and import into Address Book or directly into Direct Mail in less than 30 seconds. And I don't work for Direct Mail, I'm just very impressed by their life-changing product. The price might seem a bit high at first, but after you try it the cost seems well worth it.

GRYPHONENT  I agree with the previous review. After more than a year of waiting with no updates and bugfixes from the developer, out of nowhere comes a version 2... asking for a rather steep upgrade price and offering little new features. That is unless you go for the new Pro version. I'm disappointed and won't play that game. If the Pro version would be available as an upgrade for the price of the standard version, then maybe. But upgrading from 1.8 to 2.0 in the standard version? What gives?

ESPIRIDION  I seldom use this type of app and will probably need to use it for a project in a few months, but chances are that I will use Mailings or maybe Direct Mail 1.8.3, since I own both.

I was a bit surprised to see the upgrade price(s) so I'm definitely not upgrading. After almost a year with no updates this was a bit shocking.

SAKMANIAC  This app has performed fantastically since I first used it two years ago and continues to impress me today. The ease at which it handles HTML mail to bulk lists is quite handy. I would recommend this program to anyone who needs to send mass email and wants to be noticed!

JAN13  Our data base is close to ten thousand clients. We have “Max Bulk Mailer”, “Intelli Merge” and now “Direct Mail”.

All in one we can say that Direct mail application is simple, elegant and most important IT WORKS and IT WORKD VERY WELL !!! It is very much like Mac friendly and intuitive let you to be focus on what you like to achieve rather then to be technician.

If you put this one in test, you should not be looking back over your shoulder. No reason for that.

MUDFLAPPER  For some reason the Delivery Restrictions settings aren't working any more. I can't send more than 20 messages at a time thru smtp so I have it set to wait 2 minutes between each group of 20. It used to work fine. Now it just goes right past 20 and tries to send them all, resulting in hundreds of failed messages.

I deleted the plist file but that didn't help.

Any ideas?

MUDFLAPPER  Ah, think I figured it out. There seems to be a bug of some sort related to the check-for-dupes-before-sending feature. When that is turned on, the smtp send delay seems to be ignored. When it's turned off, it works perfectly.

I'll report this to the developer.

NOEGO  I love this program. I use it all the time, I actually bring my MacBook to work just to use Direct Mail because there is nothing like quite like it on the Windows platform. This is one of those rare business apps that makes the Mac look better as a business machine than the PC.

It's not only functional, it's great looking, and a pleasure to use.

GRYPHONENT  I wanted to switch from MaxBulkMailer to DirectMail as I liked its simplicity. However, the app has one MAJOR SHORTCOMING: if you move an email address from the “all email addresses” into a group it literally moves the email address in question into that group. So, if you have an email address in more than one group you will have to add exactly the same address again. This is totally inconvenient and not what users are accustomed to through iTunes and iPhoto where a file remains in the library and a reference is only copied to a group. Needless to say, that DirectMail’s approach also makes updating an email address a somewhat daunting task as one has to go through all groups manually where the email address is present... as opposed to merely updating it one in the main library.

MERE MORTAL  I love this program. I use it monthly to send a personalized newsletter to my customers (with their permission). The data is downloaded from a MySQL database right into Direct Mail. Works flawlessly.

ECOHOMO  I was finally able to get the program to work for webmail and Outlook users by bypassing Direct Mail's editor, using another HTML editor and then importing the file. Note that I had to serve photos from a web location as well. Using the Direct Mail's RTF editor never worked for me.

ECOHOMO  I have tried numerous times to send an RTF formatted email. All major webmail providers garble the message as well as Outlook on a PC. Also, it converts regular punctuation into strange characters.

I have used both the form on the company's website and the bug report pull-down menu to let them know about the problems.

They have not even so much as acknowledged my emails.

It has a super elegant and intuitive interface, but doesn't perform as promoted on my MacBook Pro running 10.4.7. Good luck if you buy it.

JOHN  This program keeps getting better and better. For the relatively small price, you get a good amount of bang for your buck.

I use DirectMail for sending invites and organizing get-togethers with my friends and family. It makes it nice and easy to send multi-part messages and reminders without having to mess around with your regular mail app.

I've also used it for newsletters in the past, which it also does a good job with. It's even got some special tags for basic "merging" of data such as names, dates, etc.

JOHN  Spammer aren't using this app to send spam -- any stuff sent via this tool is going to be very easy to track down the original source. Spammers typically use hijacked PCs running Windows to send spam these days.

DARREN HAYLES  I have downloaded and tried out pretty much all of the bulk html email programmes, and i personaly belive that this one is the best.

It is the only one that covers all the features that are needed, connection to MySQL database, import from address book, scavenge for email (my personal Favourite) import html code or use as a normal emailer with attachments.

Hopefully this update will solve random crashes when sending over 10000 emails.

LEE  I bought the program, it does everything I expected.

Fantastic Email importing facilities

Brilliant Tag mailmerging

List monitoring no matter how big

and lots more, however.........

until I tried to send my emails!

Does anyone else have the problem connecting via smtp servers? The program preferences are very simpl, i completed the details required:

1. My SMTP Server.

2. server requires authentication.

3. added my email address for this server.

4. password ( verified)

I turned myy firewall off( just in case) and tried to send emials via all the 3 different options however, not one email gets through, they all fail!

I checked the logfile - It claims that it " Cannot connect to my smpt server" yet my OSX Mail has no problems retreiving my emails!

Any body got any ideas? Any help is appreciated.

INGENIOUS1  This app quits often when in use and is vary frustrating! You get no support. Nobody ever responds to your email for help, your on your own here. If spam is what you do not want to do to others the do not buy this program because when you are sending mail and it quits half way through your list you will have no way of knowing who got mail and who did not and no matter how many times you resend it happens again. So this program will cause you to spam others and you will never get your whole list out. I guess the creator dose not care to support what he sells.
