The patch has failed because the application has been modified since it was originally installed (for example, plug-ins may have been disabled). Please go to the Adobe support website for more information regarding how to re-enable disabled components prior to installing the patch. Or, you can install and reinstall the application, and then reinstall the patch." Adobe Reader update to 9.2 run fine. I have seen this failure in many places around the net. TEORIC Preview has its issues, too, and sometimes disagrees with other viewers such as Adobe Reader and XPDF/Poppler (including derivatives). For instance on my computers, it messes up the fonts of nearly all PDFs generated by MS Word (Windows) and other viewers do not. It can therefore be handy to have the standard application available (and, yes: I know that PDF is supposed to be viewer independent). Even if we don't take the standard issue too seriously, Adobe reader is probably the easiest to install alternative PDF viewer for the Mac. So it is far from superfluous. Still, I agree it would not harm if usability were improved and maccified. (Version 9.2)

AGG I tried to download Adobe Reader 9.1.3 using MacUpdate. The size of the file to be downloaded from MacUpdate is shown as 2.6MB. Clicking that link instead takes one to the Adobe Reader site. The file that was downloaded there is AdbeRdr910_en_US_i386.pkg.zip, a 44.1MB file. When I checked the zip contents, version 910 is listed, not 913 or 9.1.3, and every file in that zip has dates on or before Feb.27, 2009. Has an earlier version mysteriously crept back into the Adobe website? Has the MacUpdate guru flipped his link? Or, do I adjust my meds and continue to use Skim? (Version 9.1.3)

TEE JAY The problem is that Adobe, unlike virtually every other software developer, chose to release patches for 9.1.1, 9.1.2, and 9.1.3 rather than re-releasing the full download of 9.1. So instead of giving new users the latest, most secure version (currently 9.1.3 as of when I'm writing this), they only give you the outdated and insecure 9.1 when you try to download the full version. This goes for both the Mac and Windows versions. It's absolutely insane, and whichever Adobe employees came up with this idea (probably to save on bandwidth costs at the expense of every new user's security) should be fired. (Version 9.1.3)

LYLEHM Recent versions of Safari have removed "Page Setup" from the "File" menu. Options like "Paper Size" are now incorporated into the main page of the "Print" dialog box. When a PDF opens in Safari using the Adobe plug-in, the Safari print dialog is superseded by the Adobe Reader dialog. This eliminates the ability to change paper size! If you want to be able to use other paper sizes, and still want to have your PDFs open in Adobe Reader vs. Preview (and it's Safari plug-in), just take the following steps: 1. Remove the file /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin (this can also be done in Adobe Reader: File:Preferences:Internet:Display PDF in browser OFF) 2. In Terminal.app (as the correct user): defaults write -app Safari WebKitOmitPDFSupport -bool Yes 3. In the Finder, select any PDF file and "Get Info" from the "File" menu. 4. Under "Open with" select Adobe Reader.app and click "Change All.." PDFs will now download to your default download folder and automatically open (depending on security settings) in Adobe Reader. DP-G4-450GUY You pulled down the Intel version by mistake. The PPC version runs just fine on PPC-based Macs. You can run it on 10.5.6 - but 10.5.7 has various security updates and there have been other updates since then (from Apple) that you really should apply - Adobe is staying on the legally 'safe' side of the fence by stating they want YOU to be at the maximum security level before installing their product - protection from any liability - as every software developer will state in their system requirements. It's just using good common sense. (Version 9.1)

XENOPHILE Bloated garbage. Reader is slow and unresponsive, with an unecessarily complex interface that is closer to Windows than OS X, and a tendency to crash occasionally. Although Adobe promotes Reader as "free," it's toolbar is larded with a flashy advertising panel that exacts payment in the form of attention. Presumably some people are locked into using Reader due to one of its obscure features that is otherwise unavailable, which is unfortunate since nobody deserves such punishment. Try Skim, it's lightning fast, packed with features people actually use, and has a more Mac-like interface. Skim is also rock solid and under rapid and responsive development. As a bonus, Skim is only about 3.5 MB and it's free, although I'd pay for it if I had to. (Version 9.0)

Nonetheless, when I try to print any pdf form I have filled out with Adobe Acrobat 8.1.0 the physical print out looks horrible. Everything is pixelated, i.e., there are no solid lines but lines composed of, say, half the pixels that should be there. I only have this problem with Acrobat Reader. I had the same problem with ver. 7.0. But if memory serves me correctly, there was no such problem with 6.0. Of course I deleted that when I added 7.0. Is this just an isolated incident? I think they have crippled the printing function to get you to buy the full program. Anyone have a solution? Thanks in advance.

And it is no small company we talk about here. I have dug through my system trying to undo what this application has done to it while installing. Just take a look at all the other "things" it added to my system without the simplest, kindest of requests: * Adobe Reader Download Manager * com.adobe.ESD.helperapp.plist * com.adobe.ESD.RdrDLM.plist * Adobe Download Manager Setup * Adobe Download Mgr Setup.bin All this I had to manually remove in orther to finally leave behind this absolute piece of junk. Manually remove the Download Manager. (For instructions, see Remove Adobe Download Manager.) 3. Call Customer Service to reset your product download. 4. Download the order again: 1. Installs parts all over the system, in Login Items, Utilities, creates ugly Adobe Help Viewer 1.0.app ??? WTF? Why the .app extension? Completely unecessary. Should use the built in OS X Help viewer, or bundle it inside the Adobe Reader app package itself. Now to top it all off, the app doesn't even work!!! It starts up fine and appears to be working properly but after about 10 seconds it crashes every single time. I cannot use this. Reverted back to 7.0.8. E_COMMERCE Writes out an "Adobe Help 1.0" application to your Applications folder. Writes an "Adobe Utilities" folder to your Utilities folder. Adds the Adobe Updater to your login items. NONE of this can be undone. Try deleting it - it will recreate it on next launch of reader. Try eliminating its "self repair" files - it will refuse to launch. Someone at Adobe has completely missed the boat on packages. None of these items have any business being anywhere except inside the Adobe Reader package. Furthermore, it's just plain disrespectful of the user to continually insist on recreating these items (and adding login items without notice!). This is what finally deleted Adobe Reader from my system entirely. Good riddance. (Version 8.0)

GRAHAM PERRIN Features: 2 (poor), especially compared with: a) Schubert|it PDF Browser Plugin, which offers me greater flexibility b) Apple Preview, which lets me annotate PDF. Ease of use: I wavered between 2 and 1 (worst). Interaction with other applications is lacklustre. Ulimately I'm slapping it down to 1 because it actively restricts me from adding comments. Adobe, please understand that comments tend to be for my own benefit, rarely for the benefit of others in a workflow. Value: 1 (worst). The application is buggy. The help, when I sought it, was unhelpful, contradictory and buggy. Every minute wasted devalued the product. Stability: 5 (best), but I'm discounting this from my overall score because a developer with the experience and clout of Adobe should never produce an unstable application. My overall score of 1 (worst) reflects my opinion that for their flagship technology, Adobe should have presented a bug-free and exceptionally appealing product. As they fail to do this, so my inclination to purchase their 'fuller-featured' products drops close to zero. AMCAN12 Blasting fast on my MacBook Pro - decided to make Reader a default for viewing PDF files. A completely different story on my original iMac G5 - the PPC version is painfully slow, scrolling with unacceptable hickups. I'm leaving Preview as default PDF viewer for now. As for web view - Safari's own PDF view does still the best job in both, Intel and PPC machines. (Version 8.0)

JOHN LOCKWOOD The new Acrobat Reader 8.0 is out at last! However despite what MacUpdate has put on the description it is NOT, repeat NOT a Universal Binary. This means that if you have a mix of PPC and Intel Macs, you have to download both a PPC version and an Intel version. Adobe are not the only company who have stupidly chosen to ship SEPARATE versions of a software product for PPC and Intel. Why is this stupid? Apart from IT Managers like myself having to download two different installers and then keep BOTH up to date with future patches, it also means that you will not be able to create a Universal boot disk with a Universal version of this Application (which in most other cases can be done). They are not even consistent, the recent Flash 9 plugin upgrade is a true Universal Binary. (Version 8.0)

JOHN LOCKWOOD Ha! The description has now been altered so that it no longer [falsely] claims to be a Universal Binary. ARVIDTP yeah, this software is pretty bad --- and slow. I pitty the inexperienced mac users who install it and let it set itself as the default program for web and local pdf viewing without knowing there is a much better pdf viewer built into their OS... I only download it because some improperly created pdf forms only work on Adobe Reader. Also, I've found a sneaky way to get around not being able to save a form with data in it (not re-editable of course - but like the way it can be done in preview). (Version 7.0.8)

THE ARCTICMAC I'm not sure what version of preview you're using... it's had searching for at least 3 years now I think (since 10.3 for sure... maybe even since 10.2), and it has as many zoom options and display options as Adobe Reader, if not more. And, while Adobe Reader performs acceptably, Preview absolutely screams in comparison. Furthermore, preview is installed with the system, as opposed to Adobe Reader which must be installed through a painful process involving downloading first a download manager, then an installer, and then installing. Come on Adobe... why not just let us download the installer in the first place. Name ONE GOOD REASON why we should even want to use your download manager. On top of all that, Preview allows easy conversion between PDF and many other formats. Preview allows text and oval annotations, as well as form filling (and subsequent saving of filled data, although it is no longer preserved as a form), things which aren't an option in Adobe Reader. But, I found that if you go to their ftp site, you can download the full 21 MB 7.0.5 installer in one step. (and, why does Adobe list the Mac OS as version "10" when Apple wants it to be called "X"? TNH Acrobat works pretty well, but Acrobat Reader 7.0.5 STILL does: "/Applications/Adobe Reader 7.0/Adobe Reader 7.0.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Reader: Invalid color: colored pattern specified with uncolored pattern colorspace." This is ridiculous. It's been going on since Tiger came out and it DOES NOT happen in the professional version. Obviously, Adobe has the code base. Until this stops choking up console I'm still avoiding it like the plague. So. If you want a review lets just consider it against preview AND the rest of the pdf functions we have in Mac OS X (hey...it works w/ forms and some files w/ .pdf.pdf extensions ;). Features=It does forms and ebooks, but it doesn't come close to pro and it's not fast at all. So penalty below average for giving us nothing we don't already have except a bloated forms manager. It's not great, it's not good, it is not even average. Ease of Use=I was tempted to knock it down a little below average, but it's such a simple piece app (regardless of size) that it's average purely out of lack of features. Value= Yeah, it's free. But it isn't giving you much. Adobe REALLY needs to try if they want to keep people hooked on acrobat. Why take up space, spend time downloading and updating, and then end up with something that for most is not as good as preview. Below average since we already have preview Stability=/Applications/Adobe Reader 7.0/Adobe Reader 7.0.app/Contents/MacOS/Adobe Reader: Invalid color: colored pattern specified with uncolored pattern colorspace. nuff said. ANONYMOUS I do agree with the "more and more bad." Why does Reader feel so clunky on mac when the Acrobat side makes Adobe so much money? Photoshop, Illustrator work ok, and they are much more complex. Acrobat works on Windows. Anyway, I recommend ditching reader and installing http://schubert-it.com/ in the meantime to allow Safari to display PDF again. Sigh. I still wait for Apple Preview (or someone) to allow me to edit bookmarks (outlines) in PDF and fill in PDF forms. CHRIS D Be careful.. I design web sites so I keep several versions of both the full version of Acrobat and Acrobat Reader on my computer. I test my web sites with all versions of Acrobat and Reader several versions back to make sure people that haven't upgraded can still use my sites (lots of people don't keep up to date versions of anything on their computers. Anyway.. When Acrobat Pro 7.0 came out I bought it and also downloaded Reader 7.0 (plus all updates of each). Acrobat and Reader really started acting weird on me.. spinning ball (forever), lock ups, locked up Safari when viewing a PDF online (even when neither program was running, etc. I couldn't figure it out. Since Adobe is the biggest whore in the industry when it comes to grabbing your credit card for virtually anything I wasn't about to call them. What I finally figured out was that with version 7 of both programs on my computer it totally weirded both programs out (even when one wasn't turned on). I experimented with past versions and they worked just fine in every way. I finally dumped both versions of 7.0 and re-installed them one at a time. When I put Pro 7.0 on by itself it worked just fine. When I downloaded Reader 7.0 it totally weirded out my computer again. I did it a third time.. and with Pro 7.0 my computer worked fine.. as soon as I installed Reader 7.0 it went weird. But, I could open up vs 6.0 and older yet and they worked fine. Even downloading all patches and installing them did nothing.. so I dumped everything again and just loaded Pro 7.0 and all is fine. I don't know what it is.. but I am not doing it again. Just wanted everyone to know in case you are having the same problem I did.. Good Luck !!! (Version 7.0.3)

WORKS WELL FOR ME Is simply do not share the same review that others whom lambast this app do. Why? The reality, and I was guilty of this as well, is that the Reader needs horsepower behind it and if you have an older CPU then you are probably trying to push too much app around (the same holds for using Apple's Widgets). Apple Preview is indeed excellent, but it is no Reader. Adobe has been with us for ions, and I still hold them in high regard. (Version 7.0.2)

CHRIS HABIG This is great compared to version 6. It launches about as quickly as Preview, and once running seems to operate fast too. It is more bloated than Preview but is very full featured. Works great for me. I too had a generic icon after installation, but rebuilding the LS Database (using Panther Cache Cleaner) fixed that. No other problems at all. Highly recommended. CHRIS HABIG There is no setup dialog. The catch is that what is downloaded is the installer, which just happens to have the same name as the application (not smart on Adobe's part). Every time you run the installer you are installing another copy of the app in your Applications folder. Delete the installer and all but one of your Adobe Reader folders and you'll be fine. PRES I got fooled too with the installer apparently being the app itself (except for the nasty OS 9 icon which tipped me off). Adobe really needs to tweak the installation process, as it's really not intuitive what's getting silently installed where. The app itself appears to launch quickly. (Version 7.0)

TKS 7.0 is slightly quicker to load than 6.0.3(a), but some portions of the interface appear slower. The icon has become a generic adobe pdf symbol and doesn't indicate what the application is at first glance. I had problems updating my ebooks, which are now placed in a folder called 'digital editions' in your home directory. The directory change is welcome, as ebooks is something I was using for all my ebooks and not just Adobe files (the previous version made it necessary to have a different folder for everything else). Unfortunately the automatic ('if possible') re-authentication isn't very smooth. I had error in file xml.xml blah blah contact adobe twice, then I tried to decline and the application kept spinning the watch of all things. I had to force quit, decline to authorize my ebooks (which were transfered into digital editions), then authenticate the reader and add each title individually (The error message I had was confusing and the method I had to use was counter-intuitive). Now it seems to work fine. I'm not very satisfied with this update because it seems a little rought around the edges. If you have digital assets I WOULD NOT UPGRADE until the . (point) release comes out. (Version 7.0)

Downloading the full 6.0 package won't work, because it requires 6.0.2. Typical of a big, slow, lumbering company like Adobe. Time they moved aside. Ever try a fillable form PDF with Preview? Or how about scaling in fullscreen mode? You get my point. Get Info on the .app itself, then uncheck all the plugins in the field about two-thirds down the info window. You'll note a dramatic launch speed increase and leaner memory demands. UDO HARTMUT I have seen Acrobat 7 in New York. It was incredible. So the only think which could be better than Acrobat 6.x is 7.x. The speed could be better on the Mac, that's right. Maybe Adobe uses Xcode 2.0 with gcc 4.0 and this could finally make Adobe's apps really shine. Anyway Acrobat 6 is a very good app. And Preview is faster, but there are so many things it cannot do at all. No security, no PDF 1.5/1.6 and no PDF/X. So the comparison doesn't make sense. If you need a simple pdf viewer app, preview is fine, but anyone else will want more, much more. And Acrobat 6 (and 7) is way beyond anything I have ever seen. Sweet! (Version 6.0.2)

SWEATY EDDIE A bitter disappointment, a big step backwards from Acrobat Reader 5 in a number of ways. My biggest gripe: the ridiculous new search window which takes up the full height of my monitor, and won't let documents be moved past it easily. Searches in AR 5 clearly divulge their progress through your document via the page numbers -- AR 6 uses an irritatingly vague barber-pole progress bar. Some of the docs I have are 600 pages long -- I really want to know how much longer a search in-progress will take. Like previous reviewers, I'm downgrading to the much better AR 5. My advice for all: skip this junk. (Version 6.0)

JASON T First, the DRM for ebooks in this version is horrible and if you value your privacy you won't buy books or 'authorize' your computer w/ acrobat reader. Get palmreader instead. Or use fictionwise. Ok, it's smaller than my last install of 'Acrobat Reader'. I don't like the advertising pane for the 'cool photosharing' items in the toolbar. The general feel is far too cross platform for me. I also dislike the weaslish way that it authorizes your computer. Before the latest version of reader you KNEW what data the authorization was relying upon (HD #, Comp info, etc) now you just get a whole bunch of info sent to Adobe when you register. BAD DRM. If you can see it you can take a picture, if you can hear it you can make a recording. If I'm going to buy ebooks then I'm buying them for palmreader. I don't WANT my computer info transfered all over. I'll use my credit card anyways, but both? Forget it. Require me to use my name and credit card number to authorize a book locally and I'm happy. As for Palm Support. The adobe site still states that the palm version requires 'classic mode'. Don't bother. Adobe is failing to capture the 'ebook' market by big brother DRM tactics which invade your privacy and poor support for Macintosh users. If, and when Adobe gets rid of the fake ebook for palm application and get's a decent port for OS X done, then and only then will I even consider their platform worthy of using for ebooks. As for viewing pdfs. It takes a long time to start. I wish preview were faster and can only hope it becomes faster. If you look at the prices you'll notice adobe is charging mac users for features which essentially allready exist in the Operating System. I use acrobat 5.0 and it's great. I don't see any major improvements in reader 6.0..in fact, it's annoying. (Version 6.0)

It feels like an unoptimized port of a windows app (no surprise there). Certain operations, such as selecting text in a PDF work better then 5. GARY G Inexplicably slow loading on my G4 Mac (sys 9.1) Quirky . Support on this issue seems nonexistent. 90 to 120 seconds to load the program seems way too long (Version 5.1)

SHYLOCK Adobe, why oh why does your Acrobat 5.1 icon display as 5.0 on installation? Surely you should check these aesthetic points before posting the updater. Besides that, it works well. Minus point for absent scroll wheel support. (Version 5.1)
