GCOGHILL  Just to echo all the other positive reviews here: been using ChronoSync for years without a hitch. With the recent addition of bootable backups in version 4, it really makes this app a steal at the price.

Extensive features to get as geeky as you want to, with plenty of configuration options, including rules. Also nice is the "basic" mode for those who just want to keep things simple.

An extremely well thought out sync and backup utility. If you want to do it, it's probably in there.

Very friendly and responsive developer as well. Highly recommended.

JERM IN AZ  I had been looking for an application that would sync to my NAS or from a USB drive to a server. Though time machine works

pretty well for Beth's iMac I wanted something more dynamic and flexible for my needs. In addition I felt it was important for me

to be able to schedule jobs or specify different jobs and execute them as needed in lieu of automation. After much searching an

demo exercises I plunked down my $40 and bought a license for ChronoSync.

It has everything I needed. Flexibility to specify what I wanted to back up. Manual or scheduled. Easy drag-n-drop

configuration. The GUI is nice and clean. The ability to set a myriad of control options as well as specific rules for each sync job is

a great feature. Of course you can verify and, at any time, see what has changed or been modified at a glance. If it's RED then

the file has changed since the last sync. The options to sync one way, bi-directional, mirror, blind backup or create a bootable

environment provides a lot of flexibility. Also has your typical logging features.

While much can be done from the console (scheduling cron jobs) the ease of use, flexibility and dynamic features are worth the

$40 if it's a function you seek. Especially for non-techies who may want something they can see and understand.

Last thing, the license is forever. You buy it, you own it. Free upgrades. Although you need to submit for a new license for

major upgrades using the email address you registered the original purchase with.

GCOGHILL  Here are the actual release notes from the developer site for 4.01:

• Fixes a problem that some users had registering the program.

• Fixes a long stall that occurred when opening documents and launching the application on some user's systems.

• Fixed some problems that occurred when the base language was not represented by a Roman text system. This problem could manifest itself as failure to launch, inability to communicate with agents and possibly random crashes.

• Fixed a bug whereby if you ran a Trial Sync and then hit "Cancel" from the Trial Sync selector window, any file-pair scanned that was in-sync would have their "Last Synchronized" time stamp updated if it was previously set to "never".

• Modified the intelligence behind the "Timestamps" attribute trigger so that it ignores modification dates for files if the user has also enabled the "Modification Date" data trigger.

• Added the ability to disable ChronoSync's attempt to mount file servers asynchronously via a public plist entry.

• Added an "Update all users" custom option to the ChronoSync installer. This was always being done in previous installers, but is now an optional step in the installation process. Users installing ChronoSync on FIle Servers will typically want to turn OFF this step so the installer doesn't try to clean up each and every user's home folder. Users in certain Directory Services controlled environments may also want to consider turning this option off.

• Addressed some permission issues in the installer.

KTVYEOW  Am extremely happy that the update to v4 is free.

Only problem that I am facing right now is the startup time. The program takes a few minutes to start ever since I installed version 4. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next version.

WHOSYOURTATOR  I give Chronosync 4.x four stars up from three in my last 3.3.x review. The agent is a nice addition since it can keep FULL permissions in sync. I'll definitely be purchasing the new Chronosync Agent once my trial expires. The stability and UI performance are much improved of the main Chronosync app.

I've tried running my user home folder from external drives using esata and its just not sufficient for me. Chronosync fills the gap and allows me to avoid having to carry around an external drive to share between my laptop and mac pro. I just use a home-to-home sync before switching machines using chronosync and I have ALL my files with my laptop I am on the road and have no internet access. This is something that MobileMe's back to my mac service cannot do since it requires an internet connection.

A couple of suggestions would be to include some type of listener in both Chronosync and Chronosync agent that actively monitors file changes on each machine. This would reduce scan time and make this app perfect.

Finally, as always, support is excellent in answering questions. If you can't find what you are looking for in the application, just contact support and they are always prompt to reply.

THOMANJONES  Wow. I had been manually 'syncing' important docs and flash drive packages (I work in IT and keep different malware removal/enterprise/open source software packages on different flash drives). Now I can just update the various folders on my MBP, and as soon as I plug in the flash drive, it automagically updates everything.

Fast. Very fast.

I have backups from my iDisk to my windows network share at work and my local backup drive at home - works perfectly for the most part, and tells me exactly what went wrong when it doesn't.

The 'Trial Sync' feature is indispensable, and the 'Readiness state' clearly lists any problems one might encounter due to different filesystems/permissions, etc.

The UI is excellent - it takes an often complex task (any kind of sync) and makes it visually very simple, with no clutter. The main window only has 2 checkboxes (Synchronize deletions and Archive replaced files).

I have barely scraped the surface of the advanced features, just the basics will be enough for most users, I believe; but rsync veterans will be right at home.

I only wish the developer accepted AmEx so I didn't have to pay out of pocket :P

HDRASIN  WARNING-Be careful with version 4.

I have been running version 3 for many months with no problems and very much like the program.

Version 4 however does not install properly in my computer. It accepts all the registration information, congratulates me on the successful registration, but then indicates that it is an invalid license key and goes around and around in circles without working. I have tried for days now to contact technical support with no success so far.

If anyone has an idea how to troubleshoot this, I would greatly appreciate it.

DRDUL  I've been using ChronoSync for the past 18 months, since I switched to the Mac. In selecting ChronoSync for backups, I tried pretty much every backup app out there. Some were pretty good, but none offered the ease-of-use combined with the flexibility and power of ChronoSync.

The upgrade to OS X 10.5 introduced some instabilities when I used ChronoSync to back up to my iDisk and other WebDAV servers. I have now tested version 4, and it appears that ChronoSync can handle WebDAV connections without difficulty. I also noticed that ChronoSync 4 is way faster when backing up to network volumes and my iDisk. The interface is prettier, too, which is always important with Mac software. :-)

All in all, version 4 is a significant improvement and a worthwhile upgrade. The fact that it's a free upgrade blows my mind!

ANDREW SCOTT  ChronoSync just gets better and better. It's been a while since the last upgrade but that hasn't stopped this software from being something I rely on constantly in the background. I always recommend it to people who need this kind of function.

The fact that 4.0 is a free upgrade is great value and demonstrates Econ Technologies' support for their customers.

One last, small thing: the menu bar icon has been redesigned so that it is no longer easy to confuse with Sync or Time Machine—thank you!

WHOSYOURTATOR  Chronosync 3.x works as expected, the customer support is very responsive, but I am bumping this down to a 3 because its maker is actively advertising that Chronosync 4 was going to be released in December 2008 and its now January 2009.

Please be transparent with your customers and let them know why the release is delayed and when the new version is expected since you are marketing the "free upgrade".

JOE JAPES  Responding to GLOBETROTTERDK

He said,

It doesn't even get the file ownerships and permissions correct on what it does copy!!!!!!

The truth is CS3 will be at the mercy of the logged in user when copying to file servers. A file server being any other computer you connect to. This is the case with all backup software and even using Apple's Finder to manually copy files. However ChronoSync 4, coming in December 2008, will allow users to install a remote Agent on a destination Mac that will preserve everything remotely.

CS4 passes this this suite of tests: http://www.n8gray.org/blog/2007/04/27/introducing-backup-bouncer/

Second issue.

The article he refers to was a blog. It has not been updated in years. Some of the shortcomings listed about ChronoSync were false. Furthermore we addressed the other issues. Initially the author responded but never posted our fixes.

I didn't think I have to say this but I guess I do. EVERYTHING YOU READ ON THE INTERNET IS NOT TRUE.

If you have any issues with ChronoSync contact support or drop me a line directly. I will gladly help you.

I just came across the following post:

"Ok. I Just googled ChronoSync... apparently the latest version,

3.3.6, not only isn't able of creating bootable volumes (backups)

(clones), it doesn't even get the file ownerships and permissions

correct on what it does copy!!!!!! What? Read that again. The

files it creates are are INCOMPLETE. They are missing some of the

most important metadata. And if they're missing that, what about

their basic data forks? Are they intact?

sigh. Gotta push this point home. Back in *** 2006 ***, Bruce

pointed us to a great review of backup softwares (url below). In

that article, ChronoSync 3.2.1 is rated ***NOT RECOMMENDED***. A

note is included that says the developers will be addressing the

ownership and permissions (and other severe) issues in an upcoming

release. So here we are, 2.5 years later, and the product STILL has

the SAME CRITICAL PROBLEMS.

THUNDERCLAP82  I recently installed ChronosSync to sync my Mac Pro and MacBook. The software does what it claims to do with little effort. The learning curve is small... it took me roughly 15 min. to get up and running and synching only what I wanted. The only minor issue I had (and I want to be clear this has only happened once so far) is the programmed slowed way down, so much so it was barely useable. A quick reboot fixed the problem.

The only thing I'd like to see is specific app check boxes so one doesn't have to go through and find the apps specific files such as Mail and iCal. It would be a welcome addition to just check a box and have the software do this automatically.

But that's only a request and doesn't prevent the software from working as advertised. For anyone interested in synching two or more Macs this software is well worth the price.

DOUGLAS  Warning! I performed a synchronization between my Leopard MacBook Pro and my MacBook Air and most of the 5gb files I tried to sync were rendered into Unix Executable Files. Chronosync removed the extensions from these files mostly DOC, PDF and XLS and a few JPG. The only way to recover these is to manually go in and add the extension type back once I can determine what type of file it is.

Warning before you use this software!

TOGGLEMEDIA  I have been looking for a replacement for Retrospect for the last year, trying different pieces of software from the freewares (iBackup) to the high end stuff (netvault) and nothing had the simplicity and functionality that I was looking for. Until I stumbled upon ChronoSync. By far the best out there...in terms of functionality and usability. My biggest gripe with the other backup vendors out there, is their inability to properly perform tasks over a network, or configure for more than one workstation in a simple intuitive manner. SuperDuper for example makes it easy to create a scheduled sync, but editing that scheduled sync is impossible and you have to create a new scheduled sync (from scratch) it if you want to make any modifications. ChronoSync has none of these problems and I am very impressed with it's stability, scheduling, archiving, syncing and general backup features.

JIMSTRONG  I've used ChronoSync for 18 months now and have been very pleased with it - I do several scheduled backups overnight from my G4 Mac to a PC over a small network, with a total backup size of around 55 Gigabytes.

I recently picked up what turned out to be a really strange error deep in the operating systems, where a couple of files would not archive. Given that this was quite a rare occurrence, EconTechnologies couldn't have been more helpful in working with me over several weeks to identify the problem and implement a solution. So this is just to say "Thanks Guys, great product and excellent support!"

SLOB  I have to revise an earlier criticism I made about syncing: Chronosync does sync - accurately and effectively once all the options are configured.

My earlier problem (and I bet I'm not the first or last) was in using Apple's Migration Assistant to save time & trouble but keeping the old machine on in what became a schizoid network. Once the new machine was reinstalled from scratch and apps and docs imported permissions, or whatever it was, no longer conflicted.

This should be of note to the developers because as said others have suffered the same unresolved issues. I'm sure they shook their heads at my complaint but I have to repeat - these things happen and registered users are usually not experts or programmers, which is why we write in with sometimes exasperating problems, so please - don't brush us off too quickly eh?

There are a lot of configurable options which is good, but the program needs some time to go through all those choices. Take your time there - it's usually worth it. There do remain a few conflicts in syncing, maybe to do with dates, it seems, which offer no obvious solution except to delete one of the offending files and resync.

Chronosync works over the personal file sharing protocol which is sidestepped by other syncing programs like Slingshot and iGet I'd turned to before sorting this out, so it has to actually mount and then dismount network volumes which other protocols don't have to. A bit clunky but no big deal. The others have their clunky sides too.

I also like the background scheduler so that Chronosync doesn't have to actually be running for jobs to be done.

So to sum up - once it's set up with all its options there's no better deal, imo, for backing up on a single machine and/or keeping a desktop and very mobile laptop in sync.

.. at least until Apple unties iSync from the lousy dotmac for its multi machine purchasers.

ED RENAUD  I have tried a number of options (and actually also own both Tri-Backup and Synk Pro) but concluded from the demo that ChronoSync had the features and user interface I really wanted. I ordered it quite promptly.

My only disappointment is that last Friday I requested instructions on how to access Administrative mode using their form, after reading through their FAQ and have yet to receive these instructions. I have followed up on my request once a day since Monday without as much as an acknowledgement.

I really need this info as we share documents on an OS X server but I am the only one having purchased ChronoSync to facilitate my life. According to my tests, all works well when I am the only user, but when others create content it seems I would require Administrative mode access.

I hope someone gets back to me soon, otherwise this will prove quite useless.

SLOB  I first registered Chronosync in '02 and have upgraded and used it for backing up quite happily since. I looked forward to realising the promise in its name eventually and recently bought a 2nd mac, and that's where I discovered Chronosync is a misnomer for the average but reasonably competent user (like me) - it should be named ChronoBackup.

Like the previous reviewer the first sync worked well enough and then what I knew to be identical files got error messages every time. Other files got unexplained error messages too and sometimes even updated files wouldn't be correctly transferred.

I wrote to Customer service and got a file back with instructions how to give Chronosync admin priveleges to get over what I thought (as another reviewer found) were permissions limitations. That didn't work either and I had to trash and reinstall CS to get rid of the hack, and I was passed onto another assistant who curtly informed that my home folders should sync with no problem. I've heard nothing from them since.

Take this with a pinch of salt or whatever, but I haven't been this disappointed in a piece of paid-for software since MS Office.

No doubt others have resolved these issues in some way - I'd like to know how cos I sure won't find out from customer service. Right now this for fairly simple backup (and the excellent Superduper for cloning plus Transmit for the serious lan stuff) is ok, but still not what I paid for in name.

I hope they can move on with this. I know I will be.

SUPERNOVA7  I just downloaded ChronoSync demo trying to avoid going the .Mac route. It looks good.

I was able to do a simple sync between my iBook and eMac on calendar but that was only a one time happending.

Since then I've not been able to do any more syncs: such as Safari; iCal. Although I 'm not a registered user, I was able to log in as one.

When I went to disconnect servers, this action froze up my eMac for over 12 minutes.

I really like the quickness and easy set up and have asked for the licensed trial version.

Otherwise, I'm back to walking back and forth in order to manually sync AddressBook, iCal, and Safari bookmarks.

KLAGRECA  Great program for syncing or copying data from point "A" to point "B." I find the performance great and pretty simple to use. Rules and options for individual jobs should cover the needs for most users.

The only drawbacks I see are the synchronization options are slightly confusing (Mirror vs backup vs blind backup) and the scheduling window (not intuitive).

I reccommend buying this product - the free choices in this category (file sync software) are not up to speed.

DANA SUTTON  A great application keeps getting better, I really appreciate the new, professional-looking interface. I also appreciate the fact that Econ never charges for an update. Thanks, guys! There are at least half a dozen synch/backup apps. out there that would do the job just as well for me, but i. m. h. o. what puts ChronoSynch ahead of the rest is its e-mail notification scheme. What's the point of having an app. to automate your backups if you have to root around manually in some log file to find out what has happened? Yet this is what most of these apps. require you to do. I can't imagine changing apps. My wild wish: that somebody, preferably Econ, would run together a synch/backup app. with a FTP client, so that I could use one app. to automate both my local and remote backups.

ANONYMOUS  The only way I've used this program is to synchronize my entire laptop's hard drive to a folder on a LaCie external hard drive, so I don't know how well the timed backups work. The software has worked great for everything I've used it for. Just select the folder on the computer and the one on the external hard drive and it runs great. Very stable, and the price is well worth it when compared to other backup software. I certainly suggest giving it a shot.

MARCUS CONGE  The Best!

I am so happy for this software! I did a lot of testing out of other products. This product is worth FAR more than what they are selling it for. Easy to use and brainless to keep using. They way it's meant to be.

DANA SUTTON  I've tried a lot of backup software (and spent quite a bit of money doing so) before settling on ChronoSynch. It's rock-solid reliable, and I really appreciate the feature where you can have it e-mail you notification of completed uploads. I maintain my own Web site, and I sure wish that somebody would develop either backup software or a FTP client that permits unattended uploads so that I could schedule these just like I schedule my backups.

T  One of the best, if not the best folder synchronization/back-up tool for Mac OS X. Good user control and easy include/exclude of folders and files. You can specify a folder for synchronization and then select files and folders to include or exclude by going down the folder hierarchy - some tools let you exclude folders but you have to manually add each folder to exclude, which is a tedious process. ChronoSync is also pretty fast. I hope that Econ Technologies will be here to stay and that they will keep on developing their products.

BILL  Outstanding!

Was using You Synchronize, and it was a bit confusing. It makes you manually find all the folders to exclude, and it's VERY tedious if you want to only synchronize 3 subfolders in a folder with 100 subfolders (Hello, ~/Library... ;-)

ChronoSync handles this beautifully, and it's about 10x faster than You Synchronize (in fairness, this may be because You's comparison mechanism -- checksumming, is more accurate).

The other thing that is GREAT is how it can automatically find and mount network folders. AWESOME! I have an encrypted disk image on an AFP share, and mounting it requires:

1) Mounting the AFP share

2) Double-clicking the disk image to have it mount on my desktop

I figured this would be too much work, and that ChronoSync wouldn't be able to figure out the two steps. Just mounting the share wouldn't be good because I want an encrypted image (which encrypts all data over the network). Well, the Chrono can handle this, and it can do it (and then unmount the share) automatically!

This makes it so easy to implement my backup schedule:

1) Sync to a firewire drive daily at noon

2) Sync to an encrypted disk image on a remote AFP share once a week.

What more can I say but...

RUSS  Nice update. This software does what it does perfectly. Compared to other similar programs, ChronoSync wins. For instance, I tried You Synchronize but it wouldn't let me sync to my iDisk!

No problem with ChronoSync.

The features, ease of use and stability make this program the best of its class.

RUSSELL GLEASON  It could be just me, but Chronosync will not reconize my external jazz drive as a source on the desktop to backup onto. I'm using a G3 and I'm running OS 10.2.8. From what I saw it looks like a good program and very professional in appearance. I'm confident if Chronosync had reconized the Jaz Drive on my desktop and worked as advertised it would have recieved the highest rating from me (as it looks like a good possible candidate for replacing CopyAgent that I use for OS 9.x) - Russell

JOSEPH JAPES  If the demo limitations are to restrictive then you can email me and request a time expiring license. In fact email me with any questions you have.

DON NUNN  I'd buy this program except that the 500-item limitation in demo mode means I can't even do one full synchronization of any of the folders I'd use it to sync, so I can't get a good idea if it will work for me or not. It does seem easy enough to use, and fast, and I like the "trial sync" option to see what will be changed before you're committed to it, but the strict limits in place on the demo version make me leery of having to pony up just to see if it's going to match my needs for the 6000-file folders I'll be syncing a few times a week.

To the author: What are the chances of your relaxing the demo limits to, say, 5 full synchronization operations (not including trial syncs)? Or to 500-item live syncs but unlimited-item trial syncs? I'd be comfortable using the results of a full-blown trial sync to determine if I want to pay the shareware fee, but I cannot make the decision until I've run it against my real-world system at least a few times.

DOUG SMITH  Don,

I had the same problem, but you can email the company and request a time-expiring demo that doesn't have the file restrictions. I got a fast reply, tested it out and ended up buying.

TODD  I have to agree with the previous post. This is, in my opinion as an 18 yr. Mac enthusiast, the backup software with the best power/easy of use ratio out there. And the cost is very reasonable.

RICHARD  About a year ago I migrated to OS X and found myself in dire need of powerful yet easy to use synchronization software. I had been using CopyAgent on OS 9 and liked it's mix of incredible ease of use, Finder integration and reliability. I transfer files from work to home on a daily basis. As a web developer this involves the synchronozation of literally tens of thousands of files.

After investigating just about every piece of synchronozation software on MacUpdate, I settled on ChronoSync. It has the perfect mix of ease of use and advanced options for power users. ChronoSync has also worked flawlewssly from day one.

I literally couldn't work without a reliable and poweful synchronization utility and ChronoSync fits the bill perfectly. One of my favorite features is the ability to perform a Trial Synch which gives you a detailed account of exactly what ChronoSync is about to do. This has been invaluable and prevents mistakes from occuring due to human error.

With other advanced features that include scheduling, file comparison, rule based synchronization and much more, ChronoSync can do it all.

The most important thing about ChronoSync is one that often gets overlooked in software development - ease of use. Even with all its power, ChronoSync is very easy to use.

I couldn't recommend it more highly.

ANONYMOUS  I have been using ChronoSync (V1.1.2) for some time now. It works fine. My only concerne is they have not upgraded the software for well over a year and I am wondering if they are still supporting this program.
