HO4TH  Love this app -- been using it for years. But this version (3.5.2) has a problem: When viewing messages... the scrollbars are inactive... I couldn't page long messages forward to read more. Reverted back to 3.5.1.

SX1  MT-NW just rocks! I have been using it for many many years. It's nice to see bug fixes and new features. Keep it up!

WHYTOI  Great job to continue to evolve this program. I think I'll finally dump Thoth for this UB app. Keep up this great work!

One request, would be very nice to see the threading within a message window, similar to what has been achieved in the article window. Not sure if this is in the plan?

M CHANG  Downloaded and tried. I think I will be staying with Thoth -- even if only PPC. MT-NW is missing one big feature that Thoth has, the ability to designate a different default save location for each newsgroup.

OXOLYT  Has development for this program stopped? Too bad if true, because MTNW in it's current form is buggy and badly designed, but with 10.4.3 it gets worse: Every couple of days I am unable to write postings. When I enter the first word of a message plus a space, MTNW freezes, making the program much less joyful than before. Until now MTNW had a lot of bugs and shortcomings but it was at least usable. The program seems to die a slow death and that is sad, since its basic functionality is still the best compared to other readers. I can only give it a very low number of points now.

REVERB  Still the best free newsreader on OS X. Mature code, stable, with lots and lots of features -- threading, kill filtering, X-Face support, you name it. The anti-spam filter is great. The interface could take better advantage of what OS X has to offer, but at this price, I ain't complaining.

ANONYMOUS  Used to use this ages ago under OS8, but stopped using Usenet altogether under 9 and X (although I remember playing with one of the first Carbonized versions of MTNW in the early days of X.)

Recently I had been using Pan but switched back to MTNW - it's like an old friend. The UI could use some work - you can't reverse-sort in column headers by just clicking, you have to option-click, for example.

ANONYMOUS  Meet the new MT Newswatcher, same as the old MT Newswatcher...

Updated and more stable (hasn't randomly crashed on me once), MTNW still seems to lack a few niceties. First, its yEnc handling leaves something to be desired. Files which Unison handles with aplomb cause NW to issue truncated file warnings. Not a problem with MP3s, but with archive files you're heading to PARsville, daddy-o.

The UI, as others have noted, is a bit dated. It works for me, though it's a little frustrating to have the key command for "Mark Read" (command M) next to the key command for "Cycle Windows" (command comma) and next to the command for "New Article" (command N). Thank goodness for Menu Master.

Overall it's an excellent programme. Highly stable now, which is really great. Nothing would anger me more than having gone through an MP3 newsgroup to set up a download and to see "The Application MT NewsWatcher has unexpectedly quit" pop up on my screen after pressing command B. As I say, that hasn't happened once with the new version, and I for one, and deeply gladdened by the rectification of this grevious error.

In addition to this newfound stability, BinHex compatibility has been restored. Huzzah, though I guess it doesn't much matter since most people use the controversial yEnc these days.

The junk filter seems to highlight most spam, but it is an exercise in frustration to get it to remember settings. I've filtered and refiltered newsgroups a dozen or more times only to see a non-spam post marked as junk over and over and over. What does it want from me, blood?

In all, the junk filter is a decent idea, but since it doesn't automatically move junk posts to the killfile it's not as useful as it could be. Making it more easily trainable (and a little more intelligent to begin with) would greatly increase its utility.

Overall it's an excellent little programme, made all the better by virtue of being free. While it seems all I've done is complain, these are indeed my only complaints about the application. In every other regard it is an absolute joy to use.

The ability to set group settings or to have multiple posting profiles, for example, make this a far more useful programme than Unison. And did I mention it's 100% free?

As the RIAA and MPAA slowly tighten their grip on American consumers' freedoms, Usenet may be the last refuge for the P2P community. You need a good app to get you there. MTNW might be just the ticket.

ANONYMOUS  Good and it's free so that's cool but if your hoping for Thoth (which is from the same lineage) then you may be slightly dissapointed.

MT NewsWatcher's interface is a little dated. Its feels more like a System 7 app than OS X. It's missing some of Thoth's cutting features like a filter search in the newsgroup and perhaps Thoth's killer innovation to manually add a group so you don't have to down load the whole list (This really useful if you are just trying out some open news servers)

Anyway cant complain too much MT NewsW is still a good app.

ANONYMOUS  A bit of pedantry.

First off, it's "If you're expecting Thoth", not "your", and disappointed is never spelt with two "s"s, and always with two "p"s.

JOHN JENNINGS  I've been using this for a few releases now - it is by far the best Usenet reader available for Mac OS X, and this latest version seems to integrate with X.3 much better than previous versions.

That said, the program still doesn't look very aqua-esque, and still opens images in Classic if you double click on them. It's not as 'pretty' as it maybe could be, and a bit of further integration is necessary.

Don't let that put you off though, this is still a brilliant little program.

ANONYMOUS  It now screams 'you do not have permission to write to a file/folder on disk' every quit. Persists across restarts, deletion of prefs, and reinstallations. Have repaired permissions on startup drive. How annoying.

DAVID  Great!! Glad to see you back. Thought, maybe, you had given up on this project, which would have been a shame.

One request: It would be great if you could expand applescript support.

ANONYMOUS  Been using this since it first came out, competing with YA-NewsWatcher. Curretnly it's the best Aqua-native geek newsreader on OSX. Unison probably beats it for newbs.

ANONYMOUS  I think the thing that this has going for it is that it is native OSX even with the weird window layout and is free. I personally used fink to install PAN and use that under X11 as it is faster, much more stable and has less weirdness to it. Unison is also a paid alternative to this but PAN seems to beat them both hands down, at least for my purposes.

JUNPEI  Interface could use some work, but it does well what it's designed to do. A bit tricky to get it to work on first run with servers that require authentication.

M.E.  Best of breed.

It's been one of the best news readers out there for hundreds of years now and still shows no sign of the aging process. On the contrary -like good wine it just gets better with age. And its FREE!

DC  I like it. It is easy to use, has good features for dealing with binary newsgroups, good filtering features, and it's FREE. Crashes every now and then but not often enough to be a major issue.

MUSTAFA ARIF  Looks very powerful but I found the interface a little unintuitive.

Worst thing for me was the lack of a preview pane. Having to double-click to read every message is the only reason I've decided not to stick with this software.

FROGMELLA  Excellent - this trashes the other newsreaders like the lame, confusing Thoth, and it's free!!

Oh, the release notes currently on MacUpdate's description are for the 3.2 version - click through to the MTNW site to see the real changes...

DOMINIK SCHLüTTER  Until there's a MacOS X-Version of MacSoup this is my nntp-newsreader of Choice. It has quite a lot of useful filtering-options (even with scoring), you can query multiple news-servers and it supports multiple personalities.

It is possible to use MT-Newswatcher only by keyboard without touching the mouse. Unfortunately the Standard-Shortcut - doesn't hie the Application but shows extended header information.

ANONYMOUS  Absolutely horrible. It stops responding to what you do randomly and often times it doesn't even show all the messages. An average program that turned out less than expected.
