XENOS  i urge MacUpdate to shut down the user reviews as they mostly are pure nonsense.

comparingLittle Snitch with NetBarrier, for instance, or the fact that those users proving they have not the least order on their Apple joke boxes and never applying system maintenance but calling developer's work crap, demonstrates what annoying burden it is to read all this crap, which it mostly is.

MacUpdate, stop it! don't give chaotic kids any longer the chance to produce themselves !

DJ PROTEGE  Im having trouble uninstalling. I went through deleting everything in library of intego and netupdate, used app zapper to delete app. But I cant kill the "netbarrier daemo (870)" process, I tried force quitting the process, Authenticated it, and the root process runs active soon as I Auth. the force quit. Same with the "netupdateagent" process.

Any idea on how I can get this off my HD??? Im trying to lower the amount of running process, I have 70 running at idle. Does it even matter how many process are active??? Im a n00b so please let me know respectfully.

Thanks.

VLAD DIDENKO  Not well thought-through firewall application. Messages are useless and information provided to make decisions is completely inadequate: http://didenko.com/files/091014_intego.png . Limited configurability - no way to allow/blok outgoing connections by destination domain/ip range (to prevent calls home, but leave other functionality intact).

CREVATIS  Most of the features work nicely. This software does give you a feeling like you have a little more control over what goes on with your computer. Little Snitch give you much more granular control over what this program does with its "anti-spyware". The biggest problem is the Data filter feature often causes kernel panics when it catches data you want to filter. When asking their tech support for a solution to this all they offered was to try re-installing the software. After that they have ignored me and have to answered questions for further help with this issue. So if you buy this software, you are on your own. Their support stinks.

MISHA  BS0D: The reason I was asking is because we have blocked some third party tools from searching our site. Obviously if you are searching macupdate.com from the home page you should not have an issue. I'll investigate this further to make sure it's not an issue at our end. Is it affecting other search engines you use, as well?

BS0D  JustinK, Misha and VictorB:

Thank you all for your concern. Misha, Victor, please don't worry.

JustinK, you just solved my problem. It seems like MU requires to see the last website I visited to let me search the site (too bad, because I prefer to hide my info and surfing info when I'm online, but oh well)!

So, problem fixed.

Thanks JustinK ;)

I have finally managed to configure NetBarrier the way I want it, and I'm starting to appreciate it more and more. And I'm also finding it less invasive.

Thanks again everyone :)

BS0D  Brings a solution to the useless OS X built-in firewall, but too invasive when you configure it to max protection. this is not what you'd expect from an app that expensive.

glad it was included in the MUPromo bundle because I would never have bought it by itself.

Also, very painful to configure. It takes a while to figure out how it works if you're familiar with the panel...

Have to say, I like Little Snitch better. It is less invasive and more discreet.

JUSTIN K.  I've recently bought netbarrier from Intego and I think it's a must because it's not only a classic firewall, it's a "bundle" of several tiny apps...

First, it's a two-way firewall that can blocks or allows incoming or outgoing connections and detects any spyware attempt to connect the internet from your computer.

You can also protect your data by encrypting any credit card numbers or passwords, define some rules when you are surfing the web, monitor the internet traffic by application or port, check the wifi hotspot status near you and cleans your browsers with caches, cookies, history, bookmark with washing machine

I'm very satisfied about this product and I recommend it if you're not happy with the OSX built-in firewall

RIMPOCE  Im using the trial (30 days) since Im not completely satisfied of the mac firewall application, and cannot spend days and days learning how to manage the unix firewall - even noobproof is a bit too complicate for an average user like me. So far, after teaching net barrier how to react, I've encountered no problems at all: no crash, no undesired services block, no slowdown in my old macmini working, no interference with my heavy internet and intranet work.I had to install it to prevent further problems (hacking tried on my mac , I think through Upnp open ports- now Upnp is shut down) and I have to say Im fairly satisfied.

Net Barrier is a bit expensive (when it will be discounted again with a MacUpdate promo?) but I think, since Mac hardware and software is becoming more and more popular, there are some security risks, and people working on the computer several hours cant sacrifice hours just to try to prevent hackers to ruin their work.

So I think I'll buy the license, since, at least with this last updated version, I've not experienced any of the troubles other users had apparently, and finally I saved lot of time and I feel (and I am) safer in my work environment.

BACKPACKER  It doesn't take that much effort to configure NB X5 or to navigate its interface. I didn't have to go through all 175 pages of the manual, although it was both very helpful and fun to read.

My gripe is that although the NB X5 dmg opens to reveal installer folders for various languages, using the English installer (for example) results in multi-lingual Intego apps. Please clean up the installers. Thanks.

I emailed Intego about this but after receiving a response that made no sense at all (and it took them days to do so), they simply don't answer any other emails I send them. And emails to support at MU Promo don't get delivered for some odd reason, this department is totally unreachable.

DARTH BROOKS  Ignore the comments and rating, below, by MAC ATA, he obviously doesn't know how to use this software much less uninstall it. Once NetBarrier is configured -- admittedly a bit tricky at first especially if you're on a network and do port forwarding -- it stands guard like a silent pit bull that never sleeps. And no, NetBarrier X4 does not disable the built-in Mac OS 10.4 Tiger firewall; they can peacefully coexist.

JEEPEE  While I dislike the price and especially the fact they want subscription-money every year for some service-updates (trojan-information I think), I still love NetBarrier.

I now use it for several years and now with Leopard, I still get updates for NetBarrier X4 and it works perfectly. I thought Leopard would break NetBarrier X4 and they would ask me to pay for NetBarrier X5, but X4 does work in Leopard. Thank you for that Intego!

I still didn't renew the service-update subscription, but I believe NetBarrier X4 can do without it. I also use a hardware firewall in my router, so I'm quite safe, I think. :-)

I know there are other firewalls as well, but as long as NetBarrier X4 works, I stay.

MARKOH  I DO NOT recommend this application at all, to remove it is impossible, even if you decide to pay for it it is based on a yearly license fee, and again erasing your drive low level format is the ONLY way to remove it and you will want to at some point when the serial (which they do see) will be exposed.

There are no serials that are permanent for these applications, they are licenses for a year, you pay as you go and these products can be monitored, a extension is left totaly messing with you firewall wether NETBARRIER is installed or not any more.

I would seriously avoid it., its really a DEMO.

PRODUCT can NOT be uninstalled with out Intego code, while it has a uninstaller Intego has been confronted to why there Firewall still intercepts Apple's OR PREVENTS ANOTHER FROM BEEN THE MAIN 3RD PARTY FW after the NETBARRIER demo OR FALSE PASSWORD is detected!

This product is supposed to block passwords like Little Snitch, but what happens is Intego simply de-activates all the features while you think they are working, and you can see from testing the firewall that ports are open everywhere, then when you try to uninstall it you will notice after your done that your Apple firewall will say another firewall is in use, you try all the methods Apple users recommend and as well as Apple to get rid of this and you notice a Intego extension is doing it via console, then you're told to contact Intego and explain where you got the password or reformat your drive, nice trick...

TVALLEAU  Well, that's all nonsense. I've both used NetBarrier, and uninstalled it, and reinstalled it.

Anyone who says you have to "low level reformat" the drive to uninstall it doesn't know what they are talking about. (For one thing a "low level" reformat is not possible on Macs... nor generally on any modern drives without special software.)

Second, the Mac firewall works just fine, with or without NetBarrier.

Third, you can just turn it off.

I don't know what problems this poster had, but they are not typical, and likely unique to his own setup.

Sorry for his troubles, but they certainly do not match my own experience.

SYHARRIS  My experience duplicates MarkOh's, above.

A while back, I uninstalled NetBarrier using Intego's own uninstaller. I then was unable to reactivate OS X's firewall; I kept getting the notice that another firewall was in use.

I tried to find and remove every last Intego file in my system using the app "Easy Find", but even when no Intego or NetBarrier files could be located my system's own firewall still couldn't be activated.

Only when I did a system reinstall could my OS's firewall be used again.

At any rate, I do think Intego's apps are grossly overpriced, and their egregious policy of charging $30 a year for their Trojan definition updates just plain stinks. Greedy bastards!

I'll never purchase/use Netbarrier again, nor any of Intego's products for that matter.

SYHARRIS  "Why call Intego greedy bastards?"

Originally, they didn't charge for definition updates. Then, they began charging $19.95 yearly for them. But that wasn't enough for them, so they increased it to $29.95 yearly.

That, in ADDITION to charging the rather outrageous price of $69.95 for NetBarrier.

I'd say that makes them greedy bastards.

OKIEHABU  NetBarrier X3 v10.3.7

NetBarrier provides basic protection in 'Client only' mode; but I learned the hard way that the latter setting cannot prevent IGMP packets from accessing certain ports Ă¢Â€Â” one apparently being

47807, which is used by iCalendar for network access.

It was also used by some bad guys recently to install a trojan in my G5. I know this because I ran a port scan on 127.0.0.1 using the OS X Network Utility, and 47807 came up open.

After finally wising up as to how they were getting to me, I formatted the drive and then began writing rulesets in NetBarrier's 'Customized' view. Now the unauthorized penetrations have stopped.

Advising others of rulesets which may or may not be appropriate for their specific situation is risky business; yet for people like me who use dialup and are not affiliated with any network Ă¢Â€Â”Ă‚Â i.e., just plain 'ol home users Ă¢Â€Â” there are a couple of hard and fast rules that'll save your bacon.

They are:

1. [TCP In] (Connected Services) (Block: Port Range 1~ 65535) (Try to write 0 ~ 65535. . . see if NB will accept it. Hackers are commonly soliciting Port 0; although so far NB has blocked all Port zero attacks to my machine while set to block port range 1 ~ 65535).

2. [IGMP In] (Any type) Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â” (Block)

3. [ICMP In] (Any type) Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â” (Block)

4. [UDP In] (mDNS-Multicast/SLP Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â”Ă¢Â€Â” (Allow: mDNS P: 5353; SLP P: 427) (Using 2-part rule)

5&6. [NTP In/Out] (From Add ruleset) (Allow P:123)

Note: I believe NTP (Network Time Protocol) may be exploitable. So it's a good idea to define the parameters for that protocol in a hard and fast rule, designating Port 123, which is the standard NTP port. That will prevent spoofing of NTP through other ports to "reset your clock, haha."

7&8. [DNS In/Out] (From Add ruleset) (Allow P:53)

9. [All Remaining Protocols] (UDP In) (Block: Port range 1 ~ 65535)

Now they can't use IGMP to hack my apps. . . nor are they able to use ICMP to map an attack.

Most inbound hits these days are UDP-based, directed to P: 1026 or 1027. Are you logging UDP hits to those ports? YOU SHOULD BE! Rule # 9 stops 'em in their tracks.

You should also determine the addresses of YOUR primary and secondary DNS servers from the ISP and enter them into your network folder under the TCP/IP tab (OS X). Allowing your computer to resolve addresses by the 'seat of the pants' method Ă¢Â€Â” searching for the best DNS, may be hazardous.

Do you completely trust every domain server on the spine?

NetBarrier is a good quality product that unfortunately is in the hands of some very greedy people. It's the same old story.

That's why I stopped eating french fries.

Guess some things just never change. . .

ZOOZO  The update to 10.4.x from 10.3 swaps your working copy of version 3 with version 4. But version 4 is a paid upgrade. So now you have lost version 3 for which you have paid for (the upgrade removes it without asking).

A poster on versiontracker details how you can contact support and get help in downgrading. What if I have a better use for my day? (like writing this comment)

Why change the working program for a trial version in the first place?? And without mentioning it during installation?? The honest way is giving a warning. Is Intego running out of ways to "persuade" people to keep buying their product?

A shame, 'cause the program itself is great...

DP-G4-450GUY  Ok, NetBarrier X3 worked FLAWLESSLY on Panther ..... if you, as an individual, were having problems, you had some sort of corruption on your machine. Kernel panics are usually the #1 clue to this effect - NOT "bad RAM" that gets quoted so often by the shoot-from-the-hipsters.

We've run NetB on a 500 seat, no issues whatsoever.

The price tag value is totally subjective - on a LAN or a particular individual's setup, it can be worth every penny.

ANONYMOUS  If you're thinking about purchasing Netbarrier X3, you should know that after 12 months you will be required to pony up $29.95(or possibly more, by then) for another 12 months of Trojans Filters Definition updates, if you want to keep receiving the updates.

It's the same for Virusbarrier. Until about a year and a half of ago, the definition updates were free. Then they instituted a $19.95 yearly charge for the updates, and now increased it to $29.95 per year. What a ripoff! Because of this policy, both Netbarrier X3 and Virusbarrier X4 are now horribly overpriced.

MACPEDRO  Was great software until I used with Tiger and couldn't reconnect when music sharing with iTunes on LAN or even inbetween users of same machine.

Even tried with 'No restrictions' setting.

All other local IP's access was fine.

Had to use uninstall option and restart to fix iTunes problem.

Will wait for update to fix this bug before re-install.

Still giving kind ratings as I like the software.

ANONYMOUS  Works fine for me (running Panther 10.3.9), bought the CD half a year ago, updated to NetBarrier X3 10.3.6 via NetUpdate.

I'm using the product IN CONJUNCTION WITH Little Snitch, I don't know where people get the idea that NetBarrier is intended to provide similar functionality.

The sourceforge bug is a bit annoying, but authorising and clicking a few buttons before I download something off a sourceforge mirror is simple enough, IMO.

Good:

+ None of the other firewalls I've tried seemed to be able to give me full stealth mode, this one does.

+ Easy to configure.

Bad:

- Faulty advertising on the box, OS X does NOT allow everyone to access your computer every time you connect to the internet, Intego should be sued for using lies and scare tactics in marketing their products.

- Overpriced.

- Inacceptable upgrade policy. I haven't been charged for any upgrades, yet, but once that starts happening, Intego won't get another penny out of me.

Conclusion:

NetBarrier (everything switched on) + NBConfig file + Little Snitch (+ Pith Helmet) = effective, if pricey, solution specifically for paranoid users who demand maximum security on their system. One may want to run snort and privoxy, as well, but from personal experience I would say that's overkill.

ANONYMOUS  As a firewall, this programme is *alright*, however, I have to agree with the other reviewers: Little Snitch + nanother application = cheaper, and, all in all, better.

Specifically, I recommend the *free* firewall utility, "brickhouse," which has less bells-and-whistles, but is much more configurable. That, with Little Snitch, is a winning comination.

Is it fully Tiger compatible?

I read of NetBarrier being used to stop Little Snitch from calling 216.71.206.78.

I wish Apple would build some sort of outgoing-connection security into the OS. The firewall is great for controlling attacks from the outside, but does nothing to control what apps or scripts already in the machine can do.

again... how can you compare Little Snitch with netBarrier? NetBarrier is indeed a superior software-based firewall but all that Little Snitch does is block outgoing unwanted connections to the net. ANONYMOUS  Ok,

I paid for this program a month ago. The nicest I have seen for Mac. I would like to see some additions like allowing or disallowing certain ports (any ports) I choose for any program that is needing a connection, kind of like Zone Alarm Pro. A reat example would be Yahoo messenger. I do not utilze any feature other than the chat portion and I do not like any other connections being made especially on port 80 for this program. If only I could block yahoo messenger from connecting to Port 80 or again any port I choose. The n and only then would I rate this Firewall a 10. For now I rate it a 9.00

The price; Yes it's a bit steep and no I could not find it in any retail store. For that I have to give it a minus. I really do not enjoy purchasing anything on line.

Is it stable? So far I say yes.

The only problem I have found was after I enabled the Banner section which blocks adds. I have to admit first that I added NetBarrier Config File 2.0.1. When the banner is turned on Safari hangs forever. It is blocking adds and whatever but safari still tries to connect for a long period of time before it times out. I have had to click stop after 5 or 10 seconds on some pages for them to load at all. I did try to check which blocked banner was causing the issue but this was taking way to long.

My correction for the Banner issue was this: I disabled Banner and went back to the old true, tried and tested way of blocking adds or any other site you do not wish to connect to either outgoing or incoming via a HOSTS file. If you are wondering how to permanetly block them (a regularly updated host file can be found here to) you can go here http://www.macwrite.com/criticalmass/%20mac-os-x-hosts-panther.php for a step by step walk through of all you will need and how to do it. Once this was completed I was blocking the sites and or adds from ever reaching my Mac incoming or outgoing.

Over all this program is excellent. Kudos to the Developer.

OVERDOZE  Beware! NetBarrier almost ruined my Panther installation. The .kext kernel extension of NetBarrier caused a permanent kernel panic after booting! You better dont install it until it is not explicitly updated for Panther.

This is the workaround for Kernel problems with NetBarrier:

1) Start your Mac into target mode (press "T" during startup)

2) Use another Mac to locate all NetBarrier files on your HD and eliminate em

3) Do NOT forget to delete the kernel extension

AMBROSE  I looked for this update after noticing that NB X3 10.1 wasn't working at 100% after I had upgraded to Panther. (The firewall log didn't work, but the monitoring log did.. that sort of thing.)

I read here about the problems others had upgrading to NBX3 10.3, but bit the bullet and went ahead... and had no problems at all. (It did ask me for my old serial number, so you'll want to have that handy.)

I don't doubt the other people here had exactly the problems they say they did, but in my case at least, the upgrade worked. I do use one procedure NetBarrier doesn't mention (hardly anyone does), which knocks out about 80% of install/upgrade woes:

As with any app or utility which requires an administrator's password to install, it's always a good idea to run "Repair disk permissions" from Disk Utility after installation but before restarting. If the application installer only offer a "Restart" button, use "Force Quit" to exit so you can run "Repair Disk Permissions" before restarting.

ANOTHER 10.1 USER  $40 to upgrade, and for what? Trojan protection? A menu extra? You've got to be kidding me. I bought Netbarrier (even though it was expensive) because I wanted a solid tool for protecting my cable line. 10.1 is that. I have absolutely no desire to plunk down more $ for trojan protection. All the other features seem to be either things I can easily do elseware, or additions to features (like cookie blocking) I never use. Intego, take a tip: combine Netbarrier with Virusbarrier, add tojan protection, and charge a reasonable price for it (I'm talking $50-$70, with max $20 upgrades). THEN you would have the killer solution for the mac. Right now, it seems way too much like price gouging to me.
