DOUG ENGELBART  In my old "Overdrive X 10.4.5" everything worked fine. Now I switched to this new v3.0.1 and re-configured my old settings (more than 30) with success, but I also got the following issues (OSX.5.8, G4):

1.) I cannot choose these two games anymore to configure mouse key settings: "Diablo II (Carbon)" and "Baldur's Gate II". I can select each applications’ file in the "Choose" dialog, but when I click "Open" there to choose the application, then the application is not chosen (the popup field still says "Application: Choose Application...") and "Cancel/OK" hangs so that I must force-quit the dialog.

2.) This new Overdrive now can export settings (as documented). But it can only export each single setting for each single application separately. How do I save my whole bunch of more than 30 application settings in one single export file?

THMGHTD  I'm a little embarrassed that I can't seem to find a definitive answer to this. Maybe my Googling isn't what it used to be.

Or maybe it was never that good.

Either way: I'm wondering if USB Overdrive can work, in any capacity, with the thin/aluminum Apple USB Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. The model number is A1243, Apple Part # MB110LL/A)

It's plugged in to a 13" MacBook Pro with its lid kept shut and an external Cinema Display as the primary/only monitor. The Status tab of USB Overdrive shows the Apple Optical USB Mouse (which is plugged into the keyboard), but no keyboard.

I'd love to be able to customize... well, to be honest, the whole keyboard, but that's a different app, I'm sure. Farting around with the media keys would be great, though, and my (misguided?) understanding is, somehow, there's a way to do it.

I've been sure to remove all the SteerMouse components, and I had FunctionFlip installed but disabled it and made sure none of its agents are running.

I fired off an email to their support address, but since it's the weekend I don't expect an immediate reply and figured I could ask around...

Thanks in advance!

GORDON142  OK, I think this is back to being my favorite universal USB HID Device Controller. This version finally allows me to use all buttons on my logitech mouse, and almost all extra functions of my Microsoft Keyboard. The new interface is elegant and easy to configure. I've been using Steermouse for a long time (an excellent programme, by the way), but I think I'm going to move to Overdrive for now.

ITISTODAY  With this one piece of software I can do away with Logitech's drivers for my keyboard, and Microsoft's drivers for my mouse. Truly ironic and ridiculous how this independent developer can provide better quality software than those two giants--to their own products. All I can say is "thank you!"

STEVEN GOODHEART  Bought a license 9 years ago...used it for quite a while, and then had various Microsoft Intellitype keyboards and used MS's pref pane instead for customization (I'm no fan of MS, but they make a damn fine, comfortable, usable keyboard)

Then, with Snow Leopard, the IntelliType and IntelliMouse pref pane/driver mostly broke, and the MS site says there won't be a SL compatible pref pane until mid-October. (I posted info and the MS link at a recent review of the Intellitype software here on MacUpdate.)

Since I make a living with my keyboard, I really was in a bind, because I can barely type on a regular keyboard after being so spoiled by the comfortable, splayed-hand layout of the IntelliType boards....so, I thought, "Well, USBOverdrive was always rock solid for me, wonder if it will talk to my IntelliType Natural Ergonomic 4000 keyboard." I downloaded it, tried, and was able to get back 95% of my IntelliType's special keys (the only thing USBOverdrive can't seem to program are the special "My Favorites" keys (1 through 5) although it *can* program the "star* key that the MS pref pane uses to program those 5 keys. Also, USB doesn't see the Windows "Apps" key on the right side of the keyboard, but I never used that even with the MS pref pane.)

So, to save my bacon, I happily bought a new copy of USBOverdrive and consider it money very well-spent. Not only can it program the heck out of just about any keyboard, including MS's Ergonomic Seri9es, but almost any mouse, giving full-functionality to my MS Laser 6000 cordless mouse to boot. (Of course, it also does all kinds of joysticks and other USB devices, but I don't use them.)

If I didn't want to be able to finally program "My Favorites" keys, I probably would just dump the MS pref panes for good -- but when MS finally comes out with the new pref panes, I'll probably want to program my "My Favorites" -- it's so handy to punch a button to open an app, switch, run a script -- almost anything you can think of. In the meantime, I'm very, very happy with USB Overdrive X 3.0 and am making my own "favorites" with various F-key combos. Hmmm, maybe I won't go back after all. :)

Anyway, this is a rock-solid, feature-packed piece of software with a very reasonable price and I highly recommend it to anyone who want to program their keyboard or mouse. It was a real god-send to me in my work.

EASER  My problem is that, whereas the program is working, it did not keep any of my settings from the previous version. There is an "import settings" function, but what, exactly, am I supposed to be importing? It defaulted to the "Documents" folder, where there was never any kind of USB Overdrive file before. I went into the "Preferences" folder and, no, that got me nowhere. So, are you telling me that I now have to literally reconfigure everything I had spent so much time configuring in the past? This new version has no ability to automatically maintain the settings I had? It accepted my old license code; I appreciate that. But this is really annoying. If I'd doing something wrong, I'd sure like to know about it. No other program I've used that's been updated to SL has acted like this.

OZEAN  I also could not get the two scroll buttons on my Logitech MX500 to work (the ones above and below the scroll wheel). But after checking Alessandro’s website it seems that he has already fixed problems with the non-standard behavior of some Logitech mouse buttons (G5, MX500, MX518, MX700, MX1000) and also with the freewheel scrolling of the MX and VX Revolution models. I guess we’ll have to wait a few days for 3.0.1 to be back in blissful mouse-land :)

WEASELBOY  Just installed this new version 3.0 on Snow Leopard with my Logitech MX Revolution mouse and it works perfectly. It took me a few minutes to figure out how the config panel worked, but once I got past that everything was fine. I was able to setup all the buttons on the mouse. USB Overdrive allows much more customization than the Logitech driver.

The best thing is I no longer get my console log filled with error messages from the Logitech LCC driver software.

Those having trouble should make sure the OEM Logitech mouse drivers have been uninstalled before installing USB Overdrive. The LCC Uninstaller app must be used to do this.

THUS.SPAKE.Z  Installed version 3 but couldn't get it to work properly, i.e, can't get it to scroll and other issues.

Previous version, 10.4.8 had been working just fine for me( I'm not running OS 10.6, but 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo) so I reinstalled it and I'm back to mouse nirvana.

I've been using USB Overdrive for more than 3 years and loving it.

Since I've no intention of installing Snow Leopard in the foreseeable future I'll just stick with a good thing, which is what USB Overdrive 10.4.8 is; it's very trouble free and smooth working.

I still can't seem to map ”cmd tab” and then make it hold ”cmd” to activate the application switcher. It instead behaves like press ”cmd tab” and then hold *both* ”cmd” *and* ”tab” which means it's impossible to ”point and click” to select the app I want.

Hmm... I wonder when SteerMouse comes out as 64 bit for Snow Leopard (should be soon).

DOUG ENGELBART  USB Overdrive is still the best mouse driver ever. I'm using it since 2003 to create user-efficient mousekey settings for all my workflow applications, helper apps and games. There has never been any problem with it.

Now just one thing:

Today I wanted to define a new Overdrive mousekey setting for Firefox 3.5b4 and 3.5rc1, but after clicking "New" both app files are not selectable (grey) in the file dialog list. How can this be? Any suggestions? (With FF3.0.11 and all other apps there's no problem at all.)

RONL  I'm chagrined.

After an extremely quick response by the author (Alessandro) my perceived troubles evaporated.

This software continues to run circles around the other mouse drivers.

Believe me I've tried them.

I just tried SteerMouse and it does not compare to USB Overdrive.

Often when attempting to see what button I was attempting to map in SM the corresponding button in the SM preference window would not even highlight! And __often__ once I thought I had finally managed to map a button... after a restart or awakening... the mapping would be gone. Also some features were far more limited in what you could map the tilt wheel to do.

Not so with USBOD.

The mapped commands remain.

I've been using this software for many years and should have realized that it must have been something simple to fix and contacted Alessandro before writing my last comment a few days ago.

The reason why he doesn't post more updates... simple... he doesn't have to... it just works!

EXCELLENT software.

RONL  Too bad this app is no longer being updated (or at least it hasn't been for quite a while).

It was excellent, but now it doesn't appear to recognize the buttons on my Logitech MX Revolution and the Logitech Control Center software is such a crippled/limited/buggy joke that I have had to start using SteerMouse.

It's really too bad because I've been using USBOD for so many years and it has previously performed beautifully.

CALL ME YO DADDY  USB Overdrive is truly a gem for the Mac community. The sensitivity levels in Apple's Mighty Mouse is absolutely horrible. It often feels like the mouse is being dragged thru mud. Why Apple has chosen this behavior with no way to increase sensitivity levels is mind boggling.

The Mighty Mouse is a good mouse overall but USB Overdrive makes it perfect. I was using a Microsoft mouse which was ok but right clicking was glitchy and Microsoft no longer supports that mouse on a Mac.

I'd like to thank the developer for this and I will definitely purchase this. The only thing I would like to see improved is being able to adjust the speed of the scroll ball. Right now I am using the mouse at 180 dpi which is fast but has made the scroll ball too fast. Other than that everything else seems to be just fine.

ROCKO  I have had several logitech devices and usually they look good but the software is not up to snuff, particularly with macs. They have been improving lately with their mice, but joystick and pad support has always been nonexistent. USBoverdrive has given me more control in OSX over these devices. I had exactly the same problem.

Allesandro kindly informed me Logitech is using non-standard signals in it's newer mice, which require him to buy each one and do a lot of testing.

After i'd owned my MX Revolution for 3 weeks solid of nothing but LCC foul-ups and less than useless tech support suggestions, the problem solved itself - the stupid "micro-gear click wheel" ceased to function at all in "click-to-click" mode so the piece of junk went back to the store and i replaced it with another MX-1000.

DRLEX  I have tried the demo version of USB Overdrive to get rid of the annoying 'acceleration' behavior of the Apple mouse driver (i.e. the cursor moves like a snail at slow speeds but accelerates quickly at higher speeds).

However, I have a Mighty Mouse and there's a problem with the scroll ball. When UO is enabled, horizontal scrolling in 'Open file' dialogs is way too fast, and too slow in many other applications. I can change the speed in UO's control panel, but this only fixes things in certain situations. Because the 'Open File' dialog is not an application, setting separate preferences for it is impossible. I don't know how Apple does this, but with the MM software, the speed is always right. So for now I'll just stick with the weird acceleration.

Aside from Office, Microsoft probably won't support Mac OS in the forseeable future, which means that if I purchase this app, I'm spending good money after bad towards my Intellipoint wireless system. I'm going to order an Apple Keyboard and Mighty Mouse or two and be done with it.

Steermouse is, currently, the ONLY Mac mouse driver which will work with the Copperhead's 7 buttons and scrollwheel, so you're definitely wrong there.

Zero response.

I discovered Steermouse soon afterward, and found it *does* support the Copperhead (although not the firmware feature, but it works with everything else.). KUPHD  This software works great. I have a Logitech mouse and have tried using Logitech's software with it. Talk about a mess. The cursor is jumpy and lacking in the feature department compared to USB Overdrive. I've been using this software since OS 9 and haven't had any trouble with it.

It's true it could cost a little less, but I'm not going to complain. I've been on the same serial number I purchased 4 years ago. How many other software apps can you say that about?

ANONYMOUS  I just bought an Evoluent vertical mouse, and they told me to use USB Overdrive if I wanted to program the five mouse buttons. I bought USB OD, and it's worked fine. I've compared it with SteerMouse, and there's one feature in SteerMouse that I'd like to see in USB OD - the ability to assign cursor actions (e.g., click a mouse button and the cursor jumps to the resize portion of a window). I wrote to the USB OD developer with this request but have not heard back. I find USB OD more stable than SteerMouse. SM, for instance, won't let me right click on CheckOff in order to copy; it treats it as a double-click rather than as contextual menu. So I'll stay with USB OD but hope the author adds theh feature I requested.

MIKE3K  Version 10.3.9 already worked perfectly with my Mighty Mouse - I don't see the change in 10.4. In any case, it's a lot better than Apple's Mini Mouse software since it lets you assign keystrokes & modifier keys to buttons and use application specific settings. ANONYMOUS  Stuffit-Expander is no longer installed with the MacOS (OSX 10.4 Tiger).

Since OSX was introduced, Apple recommends to generate diskimages (.dmg-files) for the distribution of applications over the internet.

So, could the developer please provide a downloadable file in .dmg or .zip-format (also supported by MacOS X since version 10.3) and not this clunky, proprietary .sit file-format. Thanks!

ALESSANDRO LEVI MONTALCINI  Version 10.4 is distributed as a .dmg file encoded in BinHex format (.hqx), there is no .sit or anything else that should cause problems. Safari decodes .hqx files automatically. With the default Safari preferences, you should be able to download the .dmg file and even have it mounted for you without any effort. If this is not working for you, please let me know.

It also seem to NOT recognize anything connected if I open the app itself and thus a restart is the only thing that will fix it. Rather bothersome actually....

ANONYMOUS  I haven't been too happy with the Logitech drivers & since upgrading to Tiger decided to try out USB Overdrive. Man am I glad I did, my mouse finally works the way I always wanted it to. I really like being able to press a mouse button & have it highlight the correct button so I don't have to try and guess if it's "button 7", "button 3", etc. There are only two complaints I have, no Bluetooth support & it's not a native pref pane (both of these are to be included in the next version). Just mad I didn't try this sooner.

ANONYMOUS  You'll have to hack it a little bit. The OS supports up to 65535 mouse buttons natively in Cocoa (I wonder who made the decision that 255 would not be enough, that they needed 2 bytes for the mouse buttons...) but that would make a very long menu in USB Overdrive. The way I did it (have that same Mx 510) was to set the sixth button - the one meant for window switching - to send Fifth Click and then set the relevant Expose action to go off on mouse button 5. I suppose you could get into trouble if you wanted to set all the Expose actions to a mouse button, but if you put the first two on buttons 4 and 5 and the last on F13 you should be OK.

ALESSANDRO LEVI MONTALCINI  As a temporary fix you can use the Keystroke command instead of the Back and Forward commands, using the Command+left arrow and Command+right arrow (or Command+[ and Command+]) keystrokes. I suspect that the Overdrive might be having trouble with your international keyboard (although I use an Italian one myself). Please contact me by email with a detailed bug report so I can fix this.

KAINE  The joystick auto-calibrator needs work. Granted that my joystick's extremes are quite messed up, but that's exactly what a calibrator is for. If we need to add an optional manual calibrator then so be it. As it is, I have to turn the sensitivity down to 40% just to make sure the center position is truly "centered". Of course, that means that it's completely impossible to produce an "up-left" direction. This needs a fix.
