ITUNESJACK  I have used Discus for a long time. It is a must-have utility, as I can load Discus and make a quick sign, poster, or CD label before Photoshop has finished loading its plugins. Speed and focus are its great strengths, and although I mostly use it for my DVD backups, i do appreciate the thousands of built in paper labels it supports.

Also it has a cross-platform file format, and you get both a mac and windows version on the same disc for a single price; I wish more companies did this, I hate having to buy all my adobe products twice.

ERIC  I've used this program for the last 5 years.... It just keeps getting better and better.

It is now a truly beautiful and fun app to work with... makes labelling a joy rather than tedium.

There are so many options and ways to use your creativity and the interface makes its easy ...

This is leaps and bounds ahead of any other labelling program ... Do yourself a favour and try this program out ..

Worked flawlessly with my DVD printer ...

PEDRORS  Another beta.... I don't even recall when I did pay for the final version...

Also, the scroll wheel doesn't work when choosing a template or paper. Meanwhile, I'm using Printshop 2, no problems at all, but not so complete as when Discus will be finished.

Hurry up guys....

DAWGDRUMMER  It still crashes and has so many illogical "features" that I can only say that I am disappointed and feel like I wasted my money.

I say avoid this until/if it ever gets out of beta.

DAWGDRUMMER  Well here we are in October and still in a very messed up beta version...my recommendation is to wait until the developer gets it working right and then buy it. It still is very glitchy.

DAWGDRUMMER  I find the new Beta versions to be quite difficult to use due to constant crashes and things getting "stuck". In general, until it gets finalized, I find it quite useless. We were promised a finished product by the end of August...I'm not holding my breath.

But if and when it gets finished I'm sure it will be fun to use.

DGOMBAU  Sorry - signup lost my comments.

I use an Epson R1800, which I like a lot. I also much prefer Discus (3.15 at this stage) to the klunky Epson software that comes with the printer. Now that is a software that looks like a cross between an old Windows and Mac OS7.

Have yet to try Discus 4. But with 3.15 with the R1800, you need to make sure Paper Size is set to A4 CD, and all the printer doors and flaps are is the right positions.

NINJABOY  I've test-driven other -similar- apps but always come back to using this! This is the BEST in its class.

The interface is clean and simple (so what if it's a bit Windoze-ish) and it's easy and stable for even a novice like me to use.

The option to download and import more patterns/graphics free from the developer's website might be worth considering in the future (?)

FSCKTHEMEMBERSHIP!  I've used this program since the beginning but have become increasing frustrated with the "Windows-ish" interface, corny included art work and limitations when adding my own pictures (i.e. size limits without auto cropping). The speed is horrible!

I found the best of the best with BelightSoft Disc Cover (http://www.belightsoft.com/products/disccover/overview.php) - no affliation to this company! This is the most "Mac-like" program available and intergrates well with other iLife applications.

Discus was great for Mac OS 9 but has not keep pace with the iLife, Mac OS X and overall interface changes the make for a pleasurable user experience.

SJK  Based on some older comments from Magic Mouse (http://tinyurl.com/q3wnq) they're proud of the Discus UI.

To my eye, V4 is still aesthetically "cartoonish" like previous versions. Apparently that doesn't matter to MMP since they have enough satisfied customers who don't mind.

The overall usability is reasonable for things I've done (with the Toast-bundled V3), even if its feels so un-Mac-like. Some commonly used features are goofy, like the font chooser.

The UI could be more "sophisticated" and comfortable for OS X, without compromising easy of use.

APPLE CODER  Only using the demo version and not liking the windows look and feel of this app, THIS is the only app out of 3 I have tried that HAS actually DONE WHAT I WANT and when I want. So what does one do about that?

It has worked perfect with the Epson r220.

I guess I am getting this one. But it sure looks ugly, but looks are deceiving.

SJWRIGHT68@CHARTER.NET  To the user who was getting the "Illegal instruction error" on a G5:

Bet you can't "boot" into OS 9.2.2 either. Here's why, or part of why.

G5s are 64-bit systems, while OS 9.2.x is a 32-bit operating system. Take a look at a MacZone catalog or the ads in the back of MacWorld or MacAddict -- you'll notice they hype G4s as hardware that "Runs OS 9.2". You're probably getting the error because the G5 can't, or won't, emulate something of an inferior class of OS. Run the app as it was meant to be run -- OS X on any hardware that supports OS X (no doubt this means a G5).

I run the previous latest Discus version (2.7.6) on a G3/600, and only rarely do I run _it in Classic or booted into OS 9. In such cases I make sure the memory it grabs on launch is significantly more than the "Recommended" maximum in the Get Info>Memory window in the Finder.

GLADSTONE MINZIE  I have tried them all the CD printing software and none of them worked to any degree of satisfaction and that included the windoze versions too.In the end I gave up and didn't bother for quite a long time. However I came across the lite version of discus given away with Roxio Toast and it just blew me away as the labels printed correctly immediately once the correct template was selected. Eventually I sent for the full update version, which was such a terrific price it was hard not to buy it. The delivery was very quick less than 7 days from the USA to GB. Also the disc contains the Mac and Windows version, which can be handy for some, Sure it could do with a few extra features ( a grid system ) but remember we are printing labels not painting the cistine chapel, less is more in my book.

A great piece of software from a very friendly company, who deserve our support, so buy a copy.

ANONYMOUS  Import Photo needs more to front/back.

If the imported photo is discarded after generating a label then the "saved" CD label doesn't display the photo...what you have to keep the photo around just to print the label in the future?

Large photos (high resolutions) "EAT" memory then crash the application under Mac OS 9.x.. Mac OS 10.x does a better job but, one can only image how much RAM this pig is using...

Paid updates - fscking bs!

EDJ  Dear User,

In Discus 3 photos are embedded in the document by default. This can be controlled via the options menu; most users will want to embed their photos so they don't go missing, but if you are using gigantic images you might want to turn this off to keep from wasting space.

The amount of memory used is directly related to how many and how large the images you import are. If you are using a 3000 x 2000 pixel image, that is 6 million pixels, and that single image alone will likely consume 48 MB of RAM! So if you are serious about high quality digital image manipulation, you will need to have lots of RAM on your machine. OS X eliminates the archaic fixed memory allotment scheme used in OS 9.

As for paid upgrades, this is the basis for the entire software industry. Without paid upgrades companies would not have an ongoing revenue stream. With updates averaging every three weeks, Discus is among the best supported products in the industry, and professional videographers and musicians rely on Discus because they know the latest printer or paper will be immediately added.

ANONYMOUS  ...archaic fixed memory allotment scheme used in OS 9."... and "paid updated..."

Mac OS 9.x is a great piece of work! Code with "Apple standards" and you will not have problems!

The paid upgrade/update process for Discus is a little screwed. Over the version history if I'm going to pay for an update then I want "everything" the previous version had (i.e. pictures, features, etc.) and then some (i.e. bug fixes, better interface - v3 is finally coming around, dang).

PEDRO R SCHAEFFER  I've being using Discus since the first version when only a few papers were available.

This version 3.0.4 is the best update of this simple but effective app.

I've tried other app. that claim that they're the best, but none beats Discus, for its simplicity and easy of use, and now, with the new "Glow" and "Shadow" for the fonts, one can really impress anyone with a true professional label.

If you have a good printer, you won't believe the results you'll get when using Discus.

My printer prints directly to the surface of the CD/DVD (the media must have a special surface..) and the results are unbelievable.

I'm giving only 5 stars because there aren't more...

ROBERT LEWIS  I have been using Discus since 3.0 came out. As a matter of fact, the developer came to our User Group in Houston to do a main presentation of 3.0. After working with product like disk stomper and similar product, I have found Discus much better than the software packaged with different stompers. You no longer have to worry about what brand you buy, Discus has the stencil for it. I have created many photo quality CD labels that just have caught my friends off guard when I give them a photo CD I made on my Mac. The Text editing tools are very flexible and easy to learn. It even allows you to import titles from Toast, Jam, iTunes and more. OK, at this point you cannot move layer position, but this is not Photoshop. This is a not a corporation software but something made by one who is trying to give us options in producing CD/DVD and other types of multimedia labels and giving the ability to use ANY type of label paper. Whether it is Avery, Memorex, Disk Stomper or the 100 plus companies out there it is there. What VueScan is to scanning, Discus is to CD/DVD labeling. And to those who got Discus with their printers, Toast, or any other package deal, that is a limited edition of Discus that does not have the entire artwork that you see. The idea is to see if you like it and if you do, then purchase the full copy. I have reviewed software for 18 years and you get more than your money worth out of Discus. End of Line.

ANONYMOUS  The Photo section needs a "Send to Back" or "Bring to Front" command. I have a photo that goes on every label I produce, but if I add another photo as a background, the original one gets covered up and there is no way to see it without re-importing it after importing the photo being used for the background.

ANONYMOUS  From another site; here's what's new:

"This is a minor update. It consists of the following changes: 1) added support for Epson R300 printers. 2) adds a slimline DVD case wrap project, 3) adds support for Polyline brand papers, 4) fixes a crosshair cursor refresh problem at zoom-to-fit, and 5) corrects the measurements of the Meritline DVD insert template."

IMHO a clunky idiosynratic program hobbled by extreme sensitivity to font problems. The program insists on drawing font WYSIWYG samples, leading to a problem with corrupt fonts shutting down the app, even if the offending font is running only in Classic.

RAINBIRD  This is what is new in version 2.7.5

"This is a very minor update. We have updated Discus to support file format changes that were made in Roxio's Toast Titanium version 6, which has a different track listing format. This affected the IMPORT command for Toast track listings when using Toast project files. Please don't order new CD's for this small change. Version 3 is coming soon".

ANONYMOUS  This is just the updater for earlier versions of the full retail product. It won't launch if you don't already own the older version. If you want to try Discus, you need to go to the Magic Mouse Website and download the demo version. Or, buy Toast Titanium, which comes bundled with a "lite" version of Discus.
