That's why I no longer upgraded Norton Antivirus and I suggest everybody does the same.

GORDO  I've used every version of Norton Utilities for Macintosh starting with 3.0 or 4.0 up to 8.0. and never had trouble. Disk Doctor worked. Then I got 8.0. It, too, worked for months without a flaw on 3 different drives. Then, on a drive it seemed fully compatible with, one day the drive unmounted while I was "fixing" it from the booted Norton 8.0 CD. There were some files not backed up, but under 5-10%, and no problem to replace. An Apple Authorized Dealer's repair person, who I believe,

took the machine it was on & thoroughly tested it, then reported (in effect), "I can see the drive but it's

flawed & not worth repairing". So, in my case, was it sick drive, sick Disk Doctor, or.....? But I'm sticking with DiskWarrior in the future, even though it repaired the drive's directory just before I ran Norton Utilities, and pronounced the repair successful.

JEFF  Anybody FOOLISH enough to install ANYTHING that has the Norton name on it deserves all of the headaches that WILL undoubtedly come!

Norton stopped even supporting their hacky, crappy software a few months ago for 10.3...these hacks shouldn't even be allowed to sell for OS X if they aren't going to support

If I could give minus scores for value and stability I would!

There are a few other utilities out there worth the $...this is not one of them!

NORTONFAN  Nortons was an 'essential' purchase when we all used to run OS 9, these days its simply not needed! Hence...... they have stopped making it! Use Diskwarrior, it solves problems (if you ever have them) and doesn't make a mountain out of a mole hill!....

Nortons need to re-evaluate what they are doing, there are loads of better products out there... Virex is better, Disk warrior is better, little snitch is better.... (and they are all cheaper) COME ON NORTONS...... MAKE SOME GOOD PRODUCTS AGAIN.......remember when you we great?!

NO LONGER A NORTON FAN  I can't even review NUM 8.0.2 because with my old 8.0 disk I cannot launch the program under Mac 10.3.2. Therefore I can't even use live update to download the 8.0.2 updater. Ther is no information whatsoever on the Symantec site regarding this issue. I'd give Symantec a ZERO on this one.

FAYSAL  There's little more I can add to the reviews already up on this lemon of a product, except to reiterate:

None of my internal or external drives on any of my 3 (THREE!) computers shows up in Disk Doctor's window. In the past I had "fixed" this by booting in OS9, running a Norton disk check, then returning to OSX to mirculously find my drives suddenly appearing. Now with Panther and Systemworks 3, even this hokey approach fails.

Norton keeps coming up against an "unknown error" that prevents it from completing a scan on my disks (this is when I'm booted in OS9 to get Doctor to work). The Symantec website proposes that this is the result of a basal directory flaw which can only be fixed by reformatting the drive and reinstalling all my system and other software.

After reading some of the reviews about this program on the web, my answer is:

Take your unknown error and stuff it. Then unstuff it then stuff it again.

Write a program that works like it's advertised to.

FREON  This program is a FRAUD. Do not buy. Like so many customers I bought every version of Norton for years. THIS IS THE BIGGEST FRAUD on the market. There should be a class action lawsuit. I lost days trying to figure out what was wrong with my 2 brand new G5 computers. I spent days trying to repair and repair again. I spent nights staying up till dawn wondering why the formerly trustworthy Norton Utilities kept finding major errors. Guess what? THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH MY COMPUTERS AT ALL. It is worthless. DO NOT BUY.

ARYUGAETU  Worthless, and possibly DANGEROUS to your hard drive!! When you (re)start Mac OS X, it AUTOMATICALLY checks your directory and makes any necessary repairs. The only recommended preventive maintenance you need to do is to perform a "Repair Permissions" in your Disk Utility program (located in Applications/Utilities), especially before and after installing software (you can continue to use your Mac while it does this). That's it!! Apple and UNIX do an excellent job of maintaining your hard drive without any outside help, this includes compiling/optimizing it on-the-fly. In terms of a virus checker, there are NO Mac OS X viruses!! These checkers just look for the 70,000+ Microsoft viruses in your email that you might pass on. It's a waste of you and your processor's time.

Repairing Permissions is not a panacea... how about fsck? how about clearing caches (OnyX, Panther Cache Cleaner, etc)? or how about DiskWarrior?

and virii? you may be immune to virii that exist for Windoze yoozerz but you can still be a carrier that can infect other non-OS X machines and therefore you should keep your Mac clean and scan regularly for virii.

TRULY PISSED  I can't believe that a product (Norton Utilities) this weak and dangerous to the general public is still around. Trusting in all of the positive glows on this product (probably paid for), I purchased version 8 for my MAC with great enthusiasm. Within 30 minutes (of frustration), my drive was taken care of by this wondrous technology. It is currently being assessed by a Data Recovery Team $$$$. At first I felt like a fool but I am discovering the many postings about this program. I love how you have to pay this company for them to tell you their product screwed up your drive and that you will need professional help. Thanks but if I had professional software I wouldn't be in this mess.

JW  This program is a joke. Fool that I am, I keep coming back for "one more update" and it has yet to see my HD since switching to OS X - 4 years ago (I was a beta tester before it was released). Now come on, you can't tell me anyone at Symantec actually beta tests this stuff. How could they? How could they access a HD that isn't showing?

Like many before me have said in these reviews, I too was a VERY loyal OS 9 customer, but just like with my other favorite OS 9 software (Quickeys) Norton never got this one to perform anywhere near the OS 9 level. If they can't get a HD icon to show, how can they actually take our money? And what's with paying for these rediculous updates that do nothing different?. Those people that talk about other parts of the program that did work... why would we think anything else would work if Disc Doctor can't?

Too many other great programs that do it right. Invest your hard earned money on them and stay clear of this mess. They've had 3 years to get it right. If ya can't get it done by then, call it a day.

IAMBLANK  About the only thing worth running from Norton is AntiVirus (not really sure about that, as I've only seen a few viruses on my macs over the years) and Speed Disk.

Alsoft's Disk Warrior 3.0.1 is the current version for disk repair utiliities. I've found that when things go downhill with my drive running Disk Warrior, Speed Disk and repair permissions works wonders.

ANONYMOUS  My Live update also refuses to 'update' this componant, but I'm not going to bother. Norton systemworks caused 'extent allocation overlaps' which required Discwarrior to repair. Whilst the optimiser and virus checking parts seem to work ok, I've disabled all the so called repair utilities - they really are very dangerous and definitely do damage your system very seriously.Avoid.

ANONYMOUS  KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF OF NORTON UTILITIES!!!!!!!

I've talked to lots of system administrators and also some hard- & software consultants, all told me the same thing: do NOT use Nortone Utilities!!!!!

NU has ruined all my MACs so far so that i had to reinstall Mac OS X, it only worked under Mac OS 9.

And btw: program updates are always very late for european users!

Instead of Norton Utilities and Norton Firewall learn how to use UNIX-Commands for repairing your HD, NU definitely won't do any good to your MAC.

APPLEWIZZY  The other people who have been writing inb on Norton Utilities 8 are essentially correct. Using Norton * will HOSE an OS X Panther install requiring it reinstalled. The era of System utilities that "patch" system software such as what Norton does is over done and finished. This worked on OS 9 or earlier classic Mac OSes, but iks so unworkable due to the complexities of unix based OS X as to be a frightening thing to do to your Mac. THE software you want for OS X utility repair is Alsoft Diskwarrior, as this rebuilds and replaces an optomized system directory rather than trying to endlessly patch the unix code. That's ALSOFT DISKWARRIOR!!!!!!

BLUERIDGE  I purchased this product as an upgrade directly from the company a month ago, expecting to get 8.0.1 on CD. What arrived was 8.0 CD, which is totally useless on Panther. It calls out hundreds of false errors. If you want to talk to someone in support, fork over another $29 per phone call. I ended up returning the product for a full refund (less $9 shipping). I have used Norton Utilities since version 1.0, and it used to be a great product on OS9, but I won't purchase this product until the CD in the box is compatible with Panther. If you do purchase this product, see if you can find out what version of the CD they are shipping.

BLUERIDGE  Just a follow up on 8.0.2. I just updated and ran Disk Doctor 8.0.2 from my Hard Disk, and it now calls out major errors and suggests I run it from the CD to fix them. Running the 8.0 CD, calls out no errors, except for 12 known clamp size bugs it randomly calls out. I have no idea if I have a major system problem or not. This product is totally useless with Panther.

I just got off the phone with Symantec's customer service, trying to get 8.0.2 on CD. The rep suggested I run just 8.0.2 from OS9 (must be a PC guy). Their customer service reps should be sending out 8.0.2 CD's to all users that request it, but they are not.

MJACKSONGP  It is well known that Norton has not come to the Panther party. Why do we even consider this product anymore? I am old enough to remember when Norton saved by bacon in the old days. Now if you are using FileVault, it comes up with numerous spurious errors and if you follow its instructions you will mess up. Symantec's website is a mass of corporate and PC information, with mac products clearly a distant cousin and hard to find. The new TechTool is very slow but reliable, and DiskWarrior is my hero.

MACMEND  I love it, the reviews on here make me laugh...NU wrecked my disk, I would assume you had a problem and then ran NU. So your disk was already messed up.

or you ran NU but didn't have a problem? Why? I'm looking through the instructions, can anyone tell me where it says if you don't have a problem run Norton utilities.

So I guess thing are a little slanted. I have used Nu for over 11 years and NEVER had a problem with it in all its guises...Diskwarrior however which i also use and like has given me problems. Techtool was always better at fixing media with physically damaged blocks. and how long did it take them to get techtool 4 out (zzzZZZ) and drive 10, fsck -y was free how much was drive 10?

Norton Utilties/diskdoctor/speed disk etc seems to do what it say on the tin, and the undelete is still good. To be honest like most of these thing now, there is probably a command line that can do the job, but we are a little slow or too lazy to learn *nix.

Further back someone slagged Norton Anti Virus...look maybe mac viruses are few and far between, but they can pass on PC viruses to other PC users (oh great for you wondoze haters) except most of these little monkeys are designed to grind the internet or parts of it to a halt, how much of that spam comes from these damned PC viruses.

Oh come on guys wake up and smell the virtual coffee!

JENNIFER  Norton functions adequately, but the cost-benefit ratio is not there. First of all, with each OS release by Apple, Norton essentially requires an update to its product. At $70 to $100 per year, that is a considerable investment. Given there are cheaper options (Drive 10, TechTool, etc.) that are equally reliable, it makes Norton a poor investment for the long haul. Norton also prices its Mac software higher than its PC software. True, there's a smaller market for the Mac stuff, but the volume on Windows sales gives Norton profit enough. Ever since I had a comlete hard drive data melt-down caused by Norton on my old PowerMac 6500, I have been increasingly suspicious of this company--and the high price of upgrades compared to the benefit has effectively swayed me away from this product permanently.

READUP!  Symantec's Mike Romo offered tips for resolving recent problems with the company's utilities:

"I work with Symantec's Macintosh department and wanted to let readers know that if they are experiencing issues with the updated versions of Norton Utilities, they should run the following command in the terminal:

sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions

This should solve their problems with Kernel Panics and volumes that do not appear. We have a posting in our knowledge base as well:

No disks appear in Norton Disk Doctor, UnErase or Speed Disk window after updating to Norton Utilities 8.0.1

In addition to the issue with Norton Utilities and not being able to see disks once the application is updated, some of our customers are reporting problems (specifically, kernel panics) with Norton AntiVirus and AutoProtect.

Error: "Norton AntiVirus AutoProtect could not continue..." or kernel panic on startup after updating to Norton AntiVirus 9.0.1

Let's see... that's been what? 4 years now? (I was a beta tester so I am counting that time as well).

Over the past few years, Norton Utilities has generated more problems that fixes, resulting usually in the hard drive being reformatted.

For those of you looking for two excellent products that will keep you computer running perfectly, I highly recommend SYSTEM OPTIMIZER 4.1 and PANTHER CACHE CLEANER - both are available through MacUpdate, by the way.

GETOUTOFIT  and there's no DiskWarrior update for Panther (Alsoft) and TTP4 (MicroMat) is pretty crappy, by most if not all reviews on various websites...

so NONE of the so-called 'HD utilities' developers are support OS X worth a damn.

they are ALL screwing us, and to single out Symantec is just plain ignorant.

THEL  Thanks for posting the removal instructions! (Hoping I won't need them, though. (-:)

I've depended on TTP & DW for diagnostics and used only the Wipe Info, Fast Find, and Speed Disk NUM components for years; have avoided potential conflicts in 9.x by moving Norton Shared Lib into the Norton Tools folder, rather than Extensions, and that's worked fine.

I still prefer Speed Disk's optimization, and it appears from Symantec's page that the X-native NUM 8.0 has been released. Needless to say (but must!), I'm VERY nervous about "kext poluting" my new Jaguar (10.2.6), so I didn't upgrade to 7.0 nor try the 8.0 beta as of yet.

It was fairly easy to install the 9.x versions of NUM then just remove the unwanted utilities, but I'm fairly sure that won't be the case with the X versions. If anyone has installed the final 8.0 release, I'd appreciate knowing whether it might offer a Custom Install option. (Yes, I do shell out $49 _JUST_ to get each new version of Speed Disk. (-8=)

ANONYMOUS  WORTHLESS!

The uninstall process takes forever and, if done wrong, causes more problems than the installation.

The Symantec website - which is a pain to navigate - has very detailed instructions on how to remove this in their support section. Here's a sample:

When uninstalling a Norton Product, the uninstaller does not remove the LiveUpdate and Norton Scheduler components of the software. Because these components are shared with other Norton products, you must uninstall them separately. You will not want to uninstall LiveUpdate or Norton Scheduler if you have any remaining Norton products installed on your computer. Follow these steps to uninstall LiveUpdate and Norton Scheduler:

NOTES:

You must have Administrator rights to uninstall. If you are the only one using this computer, you should have Administrator rights.

You must uninstall any Symantec products.

To uninstall any Symantec products:

1. Double-click on the installer for the Symantec product that you want to uninstall.

NOTE: This is on the CD for the product, unless you downloaded the software. If you downloaded the software, then the installer is wherever you choose to save it.

2. Type in your Administrator password or phrase and then click OK.

3. Click Continue, then click Accept, and then Continue.

4. In the upper-left corner where it says Easy Install, click and choose Uninstall.

5. Click Uninstall in the lower-right corner.

6. Click Continue to automatically quit all other running applications.

NOTE: Be sure to save anything you are working on before continuing.

7. Continue with uninstallation until it has completed. Once it is complete, click Quit to close the installer.

To manually uninstall LiveUpdate and Norton Scheduler:

1. Open Norton Scheduler. It is located in the Norton Solutions folder in the Applications folder.

2. Select a Scheduled Event and click Delete. Click Delete again when you are asked if you are sure you want to delete this task.

NOTE: This must be done by every user if there are multiple users for this computer.

3. Repeat step 2 for every Scheduled Event.

4. Quit Norton Scheduler.

5. Click the Go menu, then Applications.

6. Drag the Norton Solutions folder to the Trash.

7. Click the Go menu, then Home.

8. Double-click Library, then double-click Application Support.

9. Drag the Norton Solutions Support folder to the Trash.

10. Click the Back button to go back to the Library folder.

11. Double-click the StartupItems folder.

12. Drag the NortonMissedTasks folder to the Trash.

13. Click the Finder menu, then click Empty Trash. If you are asked whether you are sure you want to empty the trash, click OK.

14. Click the Go menu, then Applications.

15. Double-click the Utilities folder.

16. Double-click Terminal. This will open the Terminal window.

17. At the prompt, type the following. It must be exact:

sudo rm -r /System/Library/Extensions/SymOSXKernelUtilities.kext

18. When you know you have typed exactly what is shown above, then press Return.

19. At the password prompt, type in your login password, and then press Return.

20. Quit Terminal.

You have now successfully uninstalled LiveUpdate and Norton Scheduler.

Sounds like fun, doesn't it?

ANONYMOUS  NU cause heap big problem. no really... it is sad, but true. there is currently NO really functional hard disk utility that runs well under x. The NU7 patch that is supposed to fix the "no volumes showing" bug under 10.2 doesnt fix anything; diskwarrior is second to unusable; drive 10 cant even fix the most basic of hd problems; techtool 4 isnt here yet.... i guess you do in fact have to format your drive and reinstall everything if you want to make sure no so called hd utility causes more damage to your disk than actually fixing stuff...

MAXIMUS  Norton Utilities cause more problems in Mac OS X than it solves. I'll wait for DiskWarrior and TechTool Pro to come out. Besides, my computer runs just fine, that is until I ran Norton. Good God how it screwed up my system. And when you try to delete it, good luck. Not only does it screw up your system, but it leaves hidden files for you to find. I love system utilities, but this one is not good if you are a Mac user. =

PAUL W  The 8.0 beta is great! Volume Recover runs in OS X now and you can schedule defragmentation to run automatically. The only thing that I would like to see added to this feature is the ability individually schedule multiple disks (with different defrag profiles for each disk -- iPod, multimedia, etc.).

MIKE_MUNICH  Hard to say. I just updated both on TiBook and G4 both running 10.2.2. On TiBook I got the messsage "update error, please re-install NUT" on G4 it "seems" to be ok. In my opinion reason enough to throw it away because it's not reliable at all.

Somewhere I read the rating "forget NUT - use Carbon Copy instead" . I think that´s the best one can do

SYSTEMWORKER  Used LiveUpdate yesterday to get the 7.0.3 Update. As always, the installers were automatically downloaded, but they didn't launch! After a restart, NU is still 7.0.2. I can't find the installers to run them manually; the only ones I find (NueX, Nddx etc.) are for the last update which was 7.0.2r014. I run 10.2.2 . I was waiting for this update since Disk Doctor seems to be incompatible with 10.2.2, at least it doesn't recognize any of my volumes. Any ideas?

ANONYMOUS  I got soured n Norton when I bought & installed NU for X. As soon as I finished the installation & restarted, I got error messages that a file named "symfs.kext" & another I can't recall were not secure. When I asked Norton, they said it must be some other program's fault. I ended up scrapping NU & reinstalling X from scratch.

Anyone else see this? Has Norton fixed it?

SYNOTIC  Well.. I know there's lots of bad things thrown around about Norton.. But I kept trying tons of other software to recover my disk which wouldn't mount (how many more hours should I wait for one test TechTool?). After going out and getting Norton from a store and coming back.. I ran it.. and my disk was repaired.. I don't know what it did.. but it did it. It has many apps for disk management such as optimizing and whatnot. Ease of use? It's mostly.. 1. Select a disk 2. Press Start.

However.. I continually got "Not enough memory" errors.. Not the standard Finder one.. but one generated from Norton. I have 128 MB of RAM.. I plan on upgrading soon.. if you're wondering. I suggest that going through each test at a time, by skipping all the other tests... This ensures that you won't get those errors if you do.

I've also tried DiskWarrior.. and it's nice.. I tried a copy from a "friend". However if you are in deep trouble and need to run out and get some disk recovery software.. you simply won't find it in stores :/ I am going to be getting it via a Catalog soon though.

PETERK  It seems to work OK. I'd love to have Speed Disk work from OS X, and have a few more options... it only works from OS9. So far, no problems, even when using DiskDoctor from OS9 to repair OSX partition. I have not tried Drive10 yet, but will probably get that too. In the past, Norton was slow to come out with updates that kept up with new MacOS versions, and TechtoolPro was essential.
