PFS  This FTP application is by far the easiest to use because of it's drag and drop features and separated window. I have website building software I use for my business website that has it's own built-in FTP, but Captain FTP exceeds that and all others I have used.

I have been using this software for several years and their updates always coincide with Mac X, unlike others that are usually behind a few of months. I would recommend Captain FTP to anyone who needs a stable, user friendly, and full feature FTP client. Their support is second to none.

Keep up the Good Work!!

If you intend to use Captain on two machines like home computer and laptop be aware that you can not have two copies open at the same time.

STEVENJOSSELSON  Basa, would you mind giving me some tips on how use CaptainFTP with my Box.net account? I'd love the ability to create a "hot folder" or even use the software as a upload client for my Mac OSX (Snow Leopard).

Any help would be appreciated as I can't find the instructions on how to do this in the CaptainFTP online help guide.

DOJO01  I am a professor at a community college and teach several online classes. Our college has a main server and I upload all my documents, jpegs, and web pages to this server.

Previously, I used a different ftp program. I wasn't satisfied and looked online. I have been using Captain FTP for several years now and it does exactly what I need it to do. I like the fact that everything is right there for me to see. I don't have to dig around to find things. It is simply the best!

USER938  Well, I like this software a lot because of the two separated windows, that allow a clearly arranged transfer.

Apart from this, this is the best App that can compete with the famous Windows-only software FlashFXP.

If I only think of the yellow thing-that-you-usually-put-into-your-bath mac tool, which opens two connections per FTP server, one to upload/download, the other to browse...

With CaptainFTP I have found a reliable and professional tool to manage my ftp transfers.

BARRY COUTTS, PMP  An excellent product and excellent service. I previously used "Fetch" for a long time (at least 10 years), Captain FTP is a lot easier to use (intuitively and functionally). I sometimes have to use Captain FTP to login to tens of accounts daily, it has never been an issue (the same can't be said for CyberDuck, which I tried briefly on a recommendation ... and then found Captain FTP). This software publisher also seems to be in tune with Mac OS X upgrades. I consider Captain FTP to have been a good investment.

Regards,

Barry Coutts, PMP

DANA SUTTON  This combines some great features (scheduling, Growl or e-mail notification, WebDav support for .Mac) in a way no other currently available FTP client does. But I won't buy it. Why? Because they charge for upgrades (the most you can do is buy 1 year's worth of so-called "upgrade insurance"). Competing clients like Transmit and Yummy provide free upgrades.

CASTLE ROSE  Not true, I paid for Captain FTP about 7 months ago. I have been able to upgrade with every update. The upgrade insurance is only for MAJOR upgades. Example: When Captain FTP 6.0 comes out. Almost any serious application developer will change you from a major upgrade. However the Captain gives you the option of insuring you if it happens. Wouldn't it be great if Adobe had something like this? This is a good thing if you want it. If not it's ok. Please Don't complain about having choices. Especially if they could be useful.

ASTROEHER  I've just used Captain FTP for a few days - because I was looking for a open-source and cheap FP program for my new Mac.

With Captain FTP I can do all the tasks I need to update/download and synchronize my Website without creating a .Mac account...

I can also rename files online, change the file-rights and all the other thing, You need to do without Shell-Access.

And most of all - I'm supporting a non-profit organisation - so it's a rather cheap way to get a full-functional-professional FTP Program!

LINDBERG999  Captain FTP is an excellent program (much better than Transit, which everyone seems to love.) It enables me to do most things with one click of a button (such as switch between making a transfer binary or whatsoever.) It also makes it very easy for me as a college student to upload files to a FTP server and access them with ease later. The transfer are extremely dependable. For a test, I transfered an 11gb file and during that transfer I changed networks several times and everything still worked great. There are also plenty of advanced features. The Captain Rocks!

RBEFOREE  I have been using Captain FTP for a little over a year and have been very pleased with the ease of use. I find it intuitive and easy to get working immediately. The install is quick and easy and the design is preofessional and true to Mac style. The fully-functioning trial version is an excellent token of faith. I am not fond of crippled demos. I prefer the time limit demo. OK Enough about the trial, just buy this. It does what it is supposed to do and despite the theme, is friendly to landlubbers and pirates alike.

Let's all support the good software out there by ponying up! Each payday, go pay for another piece of software that has made your like easier, even if your demo has not yet expired. (And I am not even a developer! I just believe in supporting the efforts of those who CAN create the tools we need)

JOEL MUELLER  MacUpdate isn't branding all posters as liars. We are simply stating the facts, that some of the 5-star ratings were posted by users at the request of the developer, in order that those users get a free educational license. So we're making this simple fact public so that the people that read the reviews can be aware that some of the reviews could be posted with this motive in mind.

CAPTAIN FTP  We shall be writing to reviewers of our products were known to us and invite them to dispute the claim by Macupdate that they were dishonest in their motives for writing a review.

By making the following comment "Also, be aware that all of the "perfect score" 5-star ratings were posted under user accounts where the only software on MacUpdate they ever reviewed was Captain FTP!" Macupdate is suggesting that if you only review one product on their site that you may be lying.

JOEL MUELLER  The developer requires users getting an educational license to post a 5-star rating user review. This is confirmed information, and you should be aware of this practice when seeing so many 5-star ratings on MacUpdate for Captain FTP.

Also, be aware that all of the "perfect score" 5-star ratings were posted under user accounts where the only software on MacUpdate they ever reviewed was Captain FTP!

RBEFOREE  There is no requirement on the rating level of the review. The requirement is to write a review.... and that it be more than a few lines long. How is that a bad thing?

Isn't it better that someone should visit MacUpdate as a result of being sent there?

As a result of being referred to MacUpdate, I can now begin using this site. More REGISTERED users of MacUpdate is a good thing, no?

NUTZ  I'm fairly new to OS X having used Windows for ages. I've tried several other FTP programs and I didn't like the interface. Captain FTP 4.5 is easy to set up - so easy you don't need documentation. The drag and drop feature is smart and fast, but I especially like the 'view' option - I have a photographic site and it is important to double check the graphics files.

An excellent FTP client backup up by a responsive development team and a good user forum.

PETERPILOTBOY  Captain FTP is a fantastic WYSIWYG FTP client. Files can be copied or transfered simply by dragging and dropping them. Ease of use, however, belies sophistication. The transfer manager allows the user to schedule multiple file transfers for a later time. This ease of use, coupled with advanced settings and general sophistication makes Captain a great FTP client for users with various levels of experience using FTP.

AMDADDIO  I am a professional photographer and routinely use ftp programs to modify and update my site as well as posting files and html galleries for my clients. I recently began using Captain FTP. It is an absolutely terrific program! Easy to use, intuitive, and makes great use of the Macintosh drag and drop simplicity. I had tried so many file transfer programs in the past, and quite frankly, none come even remotely close to Captain FTP. To date, I have never had a single problem with the program, it is rock solid, and their customer support is amongst the best I have ever encountered with any company. Within a few hours of writing (hadn’t received my serial and key from Macupdate), I received a personal, friendly, and totally helpful reply. It's one of those programs that are just a joy to use, well thought out, user friendly, and actually fun. I'd say it is without a doubt the best file transfer program currently out there. Thanks for such a great application! Ahoy Matie!

ALAIN.VANHAVER  I'm a photography teacher at the Academie of Fine Arts and it's important to the Academy to have a stable FTP client. I've been seaching for a while now and Captain FTP has it all.

Captain FTP supports FTP, SFTP and FTP over SSL for file-transferring. By a built-in server I can even securely share my pictures with other students. Additional cool features are bidirecectional synchronisation, virtual folders and scheduled transfers.

The GUI is exceptionally well designed with understandable iconography and tool tips. A two-pane window makes it possible to transfer files not only from client to server but server to server. Captain FTP is really stable and easy to use and I can recommend it to everyone.

KAB  I used TotalCommander on Win for a long time. When I was searching for a comparable toll on OS X I stumbled over Captain FTP. It lets me browse my local HD and makes it an easier task to move or copy my files. The same can be said about the tasks dealing with FTP.

It is good to know that the software is still progressing so there are continuous updates. Sometimes it feels a bit idle, but that could be my CPU. Overall I consider Captain FTP as very reliable - I use it every day.

SCRAPY  Captain ftp supports FTP, SFTP and FTP over SSL for file-transferring. By a built-in server you can even securely share your own files with other users. You can share your captain ftp adress book, too. Additional cool features are bidirecectional synchronisation, virtual folders and scheduled transfers.

Lets go more into detail: Especially I like the Transfer Manager, a built-in tool for monitoring the status and setting the priority of my filetransfers. The intuitive interface design makes it easy to handle file transfers. A two-pane window – one pane each for local and remote volumes makes it possible to transfer files not only from client to server and vice versa, but server to server. This site to site transfers really helps me synchronising my data.

Another nice feature that I often missed is the possibility to directly enter ftp raw commands.

All in all, captain ftp is a really cool and easy to use programm. A download of a trial version will convince you, too!

SPAZ  This software is by far the best ftp client software out there for Mac OS X. I love the attractive interface; often overlooked in most FTP programs. Why should you be forced to use something ugly just because you're sending files to say, the back-end of a website?

There's so much this program can do. It's got the most stable SFTP support I've seen anywhere - and boy it's quick.

The two pannels, one for local computer and one for remote server, are so easy to use. It's really handy.

What really got me with this FTP Client is the intergration with Bonjour for purposes such as file sharing. I really like how they've added new ideas and innovaions. I'm defiantly buying the upgrade protection - can't wait for the new features!

MBOYD  Captain FTP makes accessing my university server a breeze. It is very easy to use and intuitive even for a person who knows very little about FTP clients. In the past I have tried a couple of other FTP clients and didn't find their interface as clear as Captain FTP. JEYPEE  Captain FTP has been my choice FTP program from the very beginning of my "Mac career". I tested many FTP programs before but most of them had either a lack of features, were slow or not well designed. Captain FTP is very "clean" like a good OS X program ought to be and it is easy to handle. I use it mainly to update my photo website and to move files between servers. It seems the program gets faster after each update! It's very well maintained. Thanks to all people involved in making it so powerful. I know that there are many more features that I have not used yet. I have no minus points to report at all!

AEON1111  After 10 years of working on a PC platform, I made the switch to Mac last year. Spoiled by all the neat little utilities that are developed for the PC world, I was shocked at how few were available for my Mac. I was especially amazed that when I went to find something as basic as a good FTP software to replace WinFTP, that all the programs out there were totally anemic. After trying 2 different products - and hating them - my Mac technician told me to try Captain FTP. I instantly ordered it- and was pleasantly surprised! An easy-to-use interface, speedy transfers - bottom line: everything I wanted! In the sea of FTP software, Captain FTP makes sure your voyage is a smooth one.

ARATAJCZAK  I've been using Captain FTP for a few years now and having tried most of the other offerings, this is definitely the best.

The features which I find most useful are the remote editing, editing multiple file permisions and synchronization for the websites I maintain.

The newest version simply 'rocks' and I can't believe how fast it is. As I have to navigate through very large directories to maintain my sites it can take time due to the large number of files and folders. With the new version it flies through and a directory refresh happens in an instant, it is already saving me heaps of time. Actually the sync browsing feature is also very helpful as it allows me to move between the local and remote folders at the same time.

Thanks guys and keep up the good work.

Oh, love the new website too, it looks super.

ELLENEMERSON  I've been using FTP programs since 1997 but at the time used a PC so they were plentiful. When I switched to Apple in 2004 I had a hard time finding an FTP program that I liked. After trying at least 10 other products I finally downloaded Captain and really liked it alot. It was very customizable and has alot of options you can set to your liking. Has an easy to use Address book to store as many connections as you need (I have more than 100). I highly recommend this product for developers and/or infrequent users. The support is great, the price low and it is very stable. I have never had this product freeze up or crash in more than 2 years of use.

EMPEREUR  After the recent update, the speech of downloding went up, but man, it takes forever to connect, and it time about 5 min to just "preparing to copy".

IE. if you want to update a file of 4 kb, it takes you about 5 min to do so.

So in sum, it is worthless.

EMPEREUR  Just one quick note, Captain FTP is the closest thing out there in the Mac World that resembles CutFTP. (I must say Mac doesn't have much softwares out there as PC does)

One problem, why so slow? I have ADSL, about 300kb/s download speed, but only 3 to 4kb with Cap FTP, like in 1999 with dial up.

What's the cause, would appreciate if one can explain.

Whilst I am back to Cyberduck, which gives me 70kb/s speed.

MATTHIAS DAMM  Not a bad app, but expensive.

In the past, the authors have been charging high update fees for minor updates like 4.1 and 4.2 if you did not subscribe to the expensive "Upgrade Protection".

4.3 is free to all 4.x users now (bravo to this decision!), but I would not expect that this will be true for future updates as well.

The interface seems to have grown less clumsy than in earlier versions, but still is not really Mac-like.

Check out the alternatives before spending your money here, there are plenty of better alternatives (free and commercial)!

PIOTR LUCZAK  Although we respect Herr Damm's right to express his opinion of our software, we would like to point out a few salient points.

This user has never paid for Captain FTP and has received free licenses for versions:

3.1

3.1.1

3.2

3.3

3.5

4.01

4.3

We're not happy with the users comments based on the fact that he has not been required to pay for any updates in a period spanning from

December 2003, with the exception of version 4.2. The user did not contact us to complain that 4.2 was not a free update and was spurred to action under the false impression that 4.3 is also a paid update.

He has since acknowledged this in his review.

Apart from Herr Damm's dislike of the interface he has reported no technical or performance issues with Captain FTP. Although Captain FTP's twin browser window is not Mac-like in a traditional sense it is far superior to single browser applications in terms of file managment and reducing workflow.

The user is correct there are alternatives but we would like to remind Herr Damm of an old phrase "you get what you pay for".

We have invited Herr Damm to offer his insight to improve the interface and we invite any user who would like to request enhancements to the interface to contact us at:

mac_support@xdsnet.de

All contributions are welcome and appreciated.

MATTHIAS DAMM  There has been a longer discussion between the Captain FTP support and me about my posting here.

Just one comment from me: It is true that I did not pay for Captain FTP directly, but I received the license as part of a paid subscription, so I did not get the license for free from my viewpoint.

I also think that I can comment on a software even if I did not pay for it directly. And my main point is that version 4.2 was no free upgrade, and I would have had to pay the upgrade fee. This has been changed for 4.3.

NEDLYJ  Fast connection, excellent usability - the best I've found for OSX.

I'm coming from the Windows world where I was a big WSFTPPro and CuteFTP user. I looked for quite a while when I moved to Mac to find a comparable ftp program that fit my workflow and the conventions I'm used to. Finding Captain FTP was a godsend. So far the product has exceeded my expectations. All of the functionality I was used to is there (setting up address books, setting double-click to send file(s), access to unix chmod commands, intuitive transfer manager, two-panel UI, easily setting default connection folders for each site, etc.) - along with new functionality like cross-site transfers. Also, CFTP connects to sites quickly (I've tried others that don't) and keeps an active stable connection. I'm extremely happy with the product.

I also tried it and it is great !Captain FTP is nice, I also have read some where that they charge for paid updates! Well I think for me being a student that I will not beable to afford the updates(if this is true) I think I will stick with transmit for now as I have bought it, Yummy would be a great alternative, if I had the extra caash to spend. I think I would not buy Captain FTP I prefer something easy to nav.and with out the paid upgrades, Each to his own, But it for sure not the most prettest FTP aground, Reminds me with some of the icons of CUTE FTP for PC, like the connection icon!

TOMMYBEAR  I'm really impressed!

I have to be admit to being really impressed with Captain FTP 4.0. I have been using a number of FTP clients over the last few years, and this is by far the best.

The network file sharing is really cool, there are a couple of us in our office, and now we can share our files with each other really easily and help each other work on them. I also tried this with a colleague of mine in another city, and it worked well also, so a big thumbs up.

The tabbed interface is really nice too as we maintain a number of websites, and we can update all of them really easily by having a tab open for each of them.

So far I haven't encountered any problems, and the program is very stable. There are a number of other new features or improvements, but the two I mentioned above really make buying this client value for money.

As in previous versions of Captain FTP, downloading large files is really much quicker, and has really made our job much easier.

ANNA  I got the upgrade yesterday, and it's great. The ability to connect with other Captain users it really cool, and could prove to be invaluable.

I was reading the comments about the site below, and I kind of like the logo and whole nautical thing, it has an edge whereas most sites are boring and all look the same. As a Mac user I prefer to buy from companies who are creative and don't appear to be using the same old boring Microsoft, or corporate template. Anyway the product is great who really cares whats on the website.

Just filling in the ratings and in my opinion CFTP should be allocated double points for the wealth of features - it's suitable for the heavy duty user, and the novice.

SMOKED  Well It looks nice, except for the big buttons at the bottom, There website is the worst ever! But this has nothing to do with the product! I have tired it for the last 5 days, No problems, but Yummy is much faster and this crap about buying upgrade security is for the birds! I mean in general you get normally at least 6 months or a year of free upgrades, Sounds to me like there are going to start to chage for upgrades, and I will never buy from a company that makes me feel that they are only interested in my money ! (Just my option) I bought transmit and was thinking abut buying this one as well, but tried yummy and it is a little faster on downloading and a little better designed! I wrote to the dev. of this app, 3 days no reply! Wrote also to yummy support 12 hous replied with a fix, Get yummy you will not be disapointed! And to the captain, change your webpage it looks like sh*t. Can no sell something when the first thing a user see is something so ugle and also you only speak about MONEY ! GIVE people a chance to download it then speak about the upgrade, Look at there site people, only trying to sell everything! Get a clue!

STEVEN F  Excellent product!! Allows you to keep multiple connections, connects seamlessly, and is a breeze to operate. Fully customizable without having to compromise any functionality. The only point that may prove to be inconvenience is that if you are moving a file into a remote folder that is an updated version of a file that already exists in that folder, the program asks you the usual "want to replace?" question rather than keeping track of the version as some FTP programs do. No biggie if you ask me unless you are like me and move several files several times a day. Will recommend this without any hesitation. By the way, very friendly folks at Captain FTP!

It crashed on a dropped connection, it gave error messages that had nothing to do with reality (we used it between 2 side-by-side machines, so we knew which messages were bogus) and it asked for confirmation every time I asked it to do anything. Selection and transfer was straightforward but not exactly smooth. Crashed several times on my machine. In short, I found this to be a full-featured but clunky program. A little more polish and it could be quite nice.
