JOSHEWAH  This app still works, and with the isync conduits enabled I can sync with ical... However, this is the only application still life on my system that is PPC only. No wonder Palm is doing so badly. They can't update their own OS, and they can't update their software.

AKROBAT  I used to rely on this software... back in the day.

I now use Daylite instead of this ancient app.

Why?

No update for more than 2 years.

No Intel or UB version.

No interest.

Welcome to Palm.

UMAROMC  Run Disk Permission Repair (using Apple's Disk Utility in /Applications/Utilities/) then try again.

If this doesn't help, attempt to post a more detailed error report (what steps do you go through and where do you encounter errors?) either here or macfixitforums.com

MIKE  G4 Yikes! running Mac OS X Panther 10.3.9

I ran the installer under sudo (using the util Pseudo), as has been suggested to address some problems with syncing. A previous version I'd installed and used on another system would come up with frequent and vague errors on launch that would cause it to quit; so I wanted to see what the installer would do with better access to the system files.

Well, it took away my permission to modify the Applications folder, the root of the boot disk, the home folder, etc. I was still able to run Disk Utility, so I fixed the permissions, and all seems normal, and the program is working well.

Since I installed it in a non-standard way, I'll refrain from rating the installer/program, but it does seem undeniably more problematic an install than most.

SJK  To claim they "devised a more elegant fix" is ridiculous since the only change was simply deleting and modifying a couple lines in the postflight script. It still overzealously changes file and group permissions on everything under /Application Support/Palm Desktop, including conduits it has no business touching. And it still does dumb things like write temporary files in your home directory instead of /tmp and leaves a loc.txt behind. It's begging for a rewrite, which I'd do myself if I ever need to run the installer again. Really, my only reason for installing Palm Desktop was for the Note Pad app and conduit, which in hindsight would have been better to extract and install separately. I already use Missing Sync for syncing.

ANONYMOUS  After installing 4.2.1 Rev C on OX 10.4, the About Palm Desktop menu still indicates I have version 4.2.1. Shouldn't it somehow indicate Rev C? Also, am I correct in assuming that the Send to Handheld droplet for adding MP3s and other files (I have Treo 650) is *still* not functioning despite Palm's continued claims to be working on it?

ANONYMOUS  Me again. I have determined that Rev C did indeed install because I can now drop files on the "Send to Handheld" droplet (which I keep in the Dock) and they actually do transfer onto my Treo. However, the options About Send to Handheld, Preferences, and Services, remain greyed out, as they were before I installed Rev C, so there is no way to remove files that are incompatible with the handheld without manually going into the subfolder for Send to Handheld and deleting what is in there. But at least I can transfer files now. For what it's worth, I have OS 10.4.2.

MLE  Before I mess up my system again (G4 Sawtooth, 10.4.2 / Palm Desktop 4.1, Treo 600 - GSM version with the latest firmware) has anyone tried this with the Treo 600?

I had to downgrade from 4.2.1 to 4.1 when I replaced a Tungsten E with a Treo 600 as the former would not work with the Treo. Does this?

I'd really LOVE to replace PD with iSync/AddressBook/iCal but I really need the Memo Pad App. Also, I'd like the option to have "Handheld overrides Macintosh" or Macintosh overrides Handheld" instead of just "Synchronize" which is all iSync supports.

Thanks

MLE  OK so I'm answering my own question.

I went to the Palm site and it says that this supports the Treo 600. I went ahead and installed it and it does. Some caveats though.

1. Back Up your data and third party conduits

2. Delete all Palm related files. Just do a "find" for "Palm" and go from there. Just be careful not to delete the items you backed up

3. It has to be installed in an active boot partition/drive. Otherwise, it will not install the conduits and Transport modules. You can then transfer the Palm Desktop and Hotsync application to any drive/partition after the install.

If it wont let you trash the original files, Open the Activity Monitor app and kill all the Palm related processes (Palm Desktop Background I believe and Transport Monitor).

4. Use the older conduits ie. Address Book instead of Contacts, Datebook instead of Calendar, Memo instead of Memos and To Do instead of Tasks. The newer ones will not sync with the Treo 600.

5. Back Up

Since I've only done this last night, with only one HotSync, I cant comment on stability. The installer is a LOT better though....

Hope this helps.

TIM WOOD  I've received a number of errors this morning and went through quite a lot of documented and undocumented troubleshooting. Some or all of these steps should help with:

-4960 error when hotsyncing

You don't have permission" errors on hotsync

'Volume is locked'

'Conduit manager volume is locked'

*) Temporarily Disable Virex and try to launch Palm Desktop. If it works, Virex and Palm Desktop cannot be run at the same time (on your setup).

*) Delete duplicate preference files.

- From the finder, Find (Command-F)

- Search for names that contain com.palm.hs

- Delete them (and empty the trash)

- System Preferences -> Login Items

- If you find multiple "Palm Desktop Background" or "Transport Monitor" entries, delete the extras.

- Restart your Mac.

- Try to HotSync

*) Fix permissions on the Palm folder

- Open Terminal and do the following:

> chmod -R 755 ~/Documents/Palm

- Note: this introduces a slight

security risk for your data!

- Try to HotSync

*) Repair Disk Permissions with Disk Utility

- Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility

- Click on your drive

- Click repair permissions

- Quit and Try to HotSync

*) Repair permissions on your Preferences Folder

- Open Terminal and do the following

> chmod 700 ~/Library/Preferences

> ls -ald Preferences

drwx------ 238 [user] staff ...

You should see your short username instead of [user]

- Quit and try to HotSync

*) Delete your palm settings and data

- Go to your Palm folder in your Documents folder

- Delete these:

- User Data

- User Data Archive

- HotSync Log

- Optionally (this might be risky!) delete these:

- Conduit Data

- PalmConduitList.plist

- sync.ini

- Quit and try to HotSync

*) Finally, if all else fails, double-click on the HotSync log in your Palm folder in your Documents folder. It's not the most cryptic log file in the world. It did give me any info to make the crazy guesses that got my problem solved.

Then after I reinstalled the palm software I removed the conduits I wanted out of the "conduits" folder of of the old "palm hotsync" folder and put them in the one newly installed "palm hotsync" folder seems to be work great. When every things installed right I love this program

TADPOLEONTHEWEB  My installation went off without a hitch. I'm using Mac OS X 10.3.3. I'd suggest that if you're having trouble installing Palm Desktop to make sure you have the latest system software update. And when you install, try to put the installation in a different folder than the one in which your original Palm folder is installed to avoid problems from overwriting. Create a backup of your original in another place just in case.

STONEY  Installer doesn't work correctly, at least if you are installing Hotsync files only. Hotsync Manager, Conduit Manager, and Transport Monitor were packages (not apps) with generic icons. Hotsync Manager would not launch. Tried repairing permissions before and after. I'd wait for the next revision before trying this one, or back up your files so that you can copy these three apps back once it fails.

ROGER WILMUT  Using a Tungsten T3 with OS10.3.3 and the previous Palm Desktop I had no problems. Now Hotsync acts as if everything on the Palm had been updated just before the sync - it uploads everything to the Desktop, taking several minutes instead of 30 seconds, and anything deleted on the Desktop reappears (and anything modified on the Desktop gets duplicated, even though it hadn't been modified on the handheld). Reported to Palm - they didn't seem to think the extended sync time mattered....

ANONYMOUS  There may be a solution, It ist the software from Marks/Space. I had to use it so sync my Clié PEG-T425 (in the US 415) to the desktop with OS 9. With iSync it would work, bur I don't know about Palm OS 5. However, it will work with the additional software, which -I think - is way to expensive. But if you can afford a new Clié, this is maybe not quite the problem. http://www.markspace.com/

MLE  Mark/Space is SO BUGGY. I tried this software with the aforementioned Clie TH55 (OS 5.2.1) and Palm Desktop 4.1. It would work some of the time. If it did work, not all the data was synced. It would also crash Palm Desktop as well as the finder at times (10.3.2)

I don't think this is a problem with Mark/Space. Sony does things to their machines to "improve" it which makes it not really compatible with Mac Palm Desktop.

Too bad too. I know a lot of people who would switch to Clies if they worked with Macs.

RAF  Hum... just installed and seems to run fine although I've two notes:

. my processor usage seems to be 10% higher than before (used to be 10% and now is around 20%), on my iMac DV 400 I'd like to keep it low when nothing is happening

. it seems that the number of conduits has increased from latest version, to avoid conflicting ones, I manually disabled the ones that were not in my previous set

So far, nothing bad to note, appart from the higher processor usage.

WHYTOI  Something weird. PD4.2.1's HotSync manager now has some form of conflict checking and refused to proceed unless I disable some of my conduits. Specifically it disallows Entourage conduit to co-exist with iSync/Now Up-to-date, eventhough I've already fine tuned Entourage settings to co-exist with them. Not very flexible. But I can see the benefit for most others. The power users just need an override.

Either way, log in as root user and run the uninstaller. Then:

ANONYMOUS  Panther = doesn't work. This is one of Apple's shortcomings as they never get the participation of the those allied tech group that MAC people rely upon, in the case Palm. Way to go Apple. So I wait until the day comes so that I sync my Palm in Panther. I am glad I held off buying a T3.

ANONYMOUS  This version doesn't work at all in Panther. I was one of the lucky ones who got it to work with Jaguar, however, I currently can't sync under OS/X 10.3. Time to look at some of the open source solutions to back up my palm.

ANONYMOUS  I don't like 4.1 for Mac at all. It lacks the note feature for events, to-dos, and addresses that is an intrinsic part of the handheld and on the Windows desktop version. It is not as intuitive as either Windows or the handheld when it comes to the Address Book. Finally, I simply cannot get my Palm to synchronize with the desktop program. All in all, a fully frustrating experience.

BILLSTER  Re v4.1 on G4 Quiksilver 867 OS 9.2.1: Install went well, but have experienced several crashes which corrupted the "User Data" file. A week work lost, but I do keep backups. Obviously unstable, so going back to v2.6 provided with Pilot.

UMAROMC  Every other Palm 4.1 app works- EXCEPT Palm Desktop itself- which unexpectedly quits on me without fail every time! >:p MDD G4/10.2.6... anyone know where I might be able to get 4.0?

ANONYMOUS  Where is the network sync? My Tungsten C can sync with Windows over the network but not with my Mac. The Windows app has a nicer look to it. Good potential but room for growth.

GOING TO WINDOWS DEVICE NEXT  Freakin stupid update, gives you a script so you dont have to go through the trouble of double clicking on a Palm file to send it to the Palm, now you can find the script and drag an item to it and drop. it has a few features the new palms can use, like voice memos (as if I would waste my money on another newer Palm) and it kills support for iSync, so you have to reinstall it to make it work again. Plus these lazy developers still didn't update the Read Me file, its dated March 8 2002...WTF?

ANONYMOUS  Bad news for me also. Can't hotsync, at least in 9.2.2, which I boot up in often. Stuff your Palm folder into an archive before you try this, as it messes with your Palm folder.

LKM  After not being able to backup my Palm for about half a year (due to the lack of software for MacOS X), this program promptly killed my palm and all the data that was on it.

It's a nice program, beautiful and useful, but unfortunately, it's stability is catastrophically bad.

ANONYMOUS  Can´t install applications to palm over IrDA. Use a PB G4 with Mac OS X.1.3

After trying to do so hotsync looses the connection an then my user can´t be accessed on the desktop.

The user interface is very bad imho, especially in the address part. Windows version 4 is more compact and intuitive to use.

They even added fields that are not standard on the palm itself (like address2 = business address) which is not neccesary imho and does not work when editing this info on the palm and synching back.

“Memo Pad” failed (error = #1852402768)

“Date Book” failed (error = #1852402768)
