FZP  The macupdate download link downloads version 2.1.1, at least that's what CPP says by trying to update by the program from within itself. Though the update fails with an error message "can't extract the archive". Besides that the finder info of CPP says version 2.0.9, what's going on here?

Tried it on different Macs from 10.4.11 to 10.5.8

ROBOTANK  CopyPaste Pro used to be great, but lately it's been very unstable for me. It's prone to frequent crashes that seem to occur most often when I'm accessing the clip browser. The real problem is that after the crash, all clipboard history since the last time the app was quit is lost. I'd love to wait around for this to be fixed, but the constant risk of losing all of my clips at any moment is more than I can live with. I'm currently looking at alternatives to CopyPaste. PTHPasteboard Pro seems to be the only one with comparably advanced functionality.

LUX  Version 2.1.2 does now save history through restarts.

However, I have been unable to open clips in history and archives, since installing the latest version 2.1.2 and updating OS X to 10.5.8. Although I had downloaded and installed CopyPaste 2.1.2 I discovered Bean version 2.0.3 in CopyPaste Resources. The latest version of Bean is 2.0.4, released 31 August. After manually installing Bean 2.0.4. CopyPasteI was then able to open clips.

LUX  I've posted before about CopyPaste Pro not saving clips copied before restarts when "save clips when quitting" is checked in preferences. I have found that the only way to be sure that all clips are remembered in history is to quit CopyPaste Pro before restart. Here is part of a reply I received from the developer July 3 2009:

"i thought before i check in with peter again on that that i would check again to see if it occurs and strangely enough it i did. so you are correct there is a problem with the history not remembering items copied before a restart. i will let peter know and he will get back to us shortly."

CHRISTOPH VOGELBUSCH  CopyPaste can be called the father of all Mac clip boards, since it has been around almost since the early ages of MacOS. CopyPaste Pro has come a long way, presenting itself in a new interface.

In opposite to it's competitors, CopyPaste offers many different convenient ways to access the stored clip boards, so you can chose which one is best for you.

For me every method seems to make sense in a certain setting. My favourite is the double V feature. So when you don't want to paste the latest clipboard all you have to do is press the V a second time and you have access to all Clipboard...

The whole storage of clipboards is actually very cool especially since it allows you to edit them, why don't others not support this feature?

And there are many more features you will discover for you, that will make your life easier, since copy paste even supports things like extracting eMail addresses from an eMail and sort the alphabetically. Cool huh?

Give Copy Paste a try, after all: All others are just clones of CopyPaste.

but....

go to the copypaste preferences and make sure that 'launch copypaste pro at startup' is turned on there. if that is on you need to have it work at startup so check your startup items. delete the copypaste one in there.

if you want it to remember your clips then make sure that is on in the preferences.

BURMAYANK  You asked for feedback about your newly-added capability shorten URLs from the tools menu in Version 2.0.7. Here's mine:

Thank you. But, why didn't you choose "bit.ly" (instead of "is.gd") as your designated URL-shortening application?

According to this excellent review of URL-shortening applications,

"URL Shorteners: Which Shortening Service Should You Use?" (http://searchengineland.com/analysis-which-url-shortening-service-should-you-use-17204), the application you chose, "is.gd", is significantly inferior to (in rank order) to "bit.ly", "tr.im", "cli.gs" and "Snurl/Snipurl", as well as to four others. It is listed as inferior there because it does not include capabilities for "Tracking Stats" for Twitter traffic (beyond what Google Analytics, etc., provides), and for "Custom Naming".

Anyway, whether or not these deficiencies in your chosen URL-shortening application are really significant, it nevertheless seems obvious IMHO that CopyPaste Pro needs to offer the capability of choosing one's preferred URL-shortening application, if it is going to any form of that capability at all. No?

Thanks, again.

LEE123  Wow, this is one powerful app. I have been using PTHpasteboard for the last year or so and this app offers more cool features. It is amazing how all these features are packed into such a simple app. I do think PTH has better keyboard shortcuts and also some programming features that CPP does not. This is the first day though and I need to have stable apps that always work. So far though this app has been great. BTW, I have nothing to do with the company that makes this software.

ANONYMOUS  Um the reasons you think this application is better than PTH is the reasons I don't think it is. I don't want it to be an application in the dock. It SHOULDN'T be according to the type of program it is. As far as stable applications, PTH has NEVER been buggy on my computer. Not only that, most of the features that cost money in CopyPaste are FREE, yes FREE in PTH pasteboard. There is a reason PTH is the #1 clipboard utility for the Mac.

GHOLZMAN_MAC.COM  I have been a user of CopyPaste since its inception. And its programers continue to improve its reliability, and functionality. They update so that is compatible with changes in the Mac Operating system.

How many times have you needed to copy more that one item, sentence, paragraph, address, etc? OsX allows you to keep as many documents open as you want. Thus, to achieve the task you go back and forth between 2 or more documents. Wouldn’t it be nicer if you copied all the words, sentences, etc. first and then pasted them into your document. You can achieve this with CopyPastePro. It holds as many copies as you want on a clip board. These remain when you shut down. Thus, you can paste the item all at once and in the format that you indicate, ie, keeping or removing quotes. In addition you have a second set of clip boards for standard items, such as your address, your telephone number or in my case various html markers.

GEO73134  I have used CopyPaste for what seems like forever. I know it was during system 8, or maybe 7 if it was around then. From the beginning and on through the OSX beta testing I have never turned on my computer without using it. Next to the system itself, CopyPaste is used constantly. I can't imagine using my MAC without CopyPaste. During the beta testing, I am sure I drove them crazy with my complaints/suggestions. The bugs are pretty much gone now and I am using it without incident. These guys also make a product called iClock that is just as indispensable if you track time, dates and time zones.

SILWIT  I loved CopyPaste with OS 9. Then the developers needed to retool it when I switched to 10.4. They did. Those two versions were better than the many multiple clipboard apps I also tried (especially tried while waiting for CP to be retooled).

I had a bit of conflicts between it and some of the many other constantly-running apps I use, where I had to tweak things a bit. Now that's no longer a problem.

Yowza for my needs and wants, the ability to edit the clips, the many ways to view what's in the clip history palette and in the archive palettes, and the many ways to copy and paste from those palettes!

The new manual is so much better.

CopyPaste was great for my needs and wants to begin with and it just keeps getting better.

LUX  I've been testing the public beta for a few days now, running OS X 10.5.6 and I have experienced no problems whatsoever. I am pleased to see the return of the vertical clipboard (browser). Unless I've missed something, I would like to be able to drag & drop using the vertical browser with the option to have the vertical and horizontal browsers sticky. Compared to PTHPasteboard, CopyPaste Pro is a very elegant app - as the PTHPasteboard window fills up with clips it looks messy and rather ugly, not so CopyPaste Pro. However, it would be great if there was a search facility (like PTHPasteboard), in CopyPaste Pro which would allow me to search scores of clip archives, all containing the maximum number of clips using a word or phrase. Overall, I like the way CopyPaste Pro is developing - keep up the excellent work!

I tried to submit the text from my crash log to the developer, but the Google Docs spreadsheet keeps crashing!!!

Give me a break.

The clip browser is easier to use than in earlier versions of CopyPaste. For some reason, the preference that places an icon in the dock doesn't work in Tiger. I seem to remember other apps able to do this in Tiger. Maybe the developer should ask around as to how to implement thi feature.

KADAMS9181  I've got some good news to report.

I received a nice email from the developer of copypaste earlier in the week.

I found out the reason why he wasn't responding to my emails. It seems his spam checker thought my messages were spam, thus they were filed accordingly.

As I was angry because I thought he was ignoring my original messages, I warned him in my second email that I would write a negative (but truthful) review if he didn't respond to me. I normally wouldn't have written such a lengthy review, but I felt that he just didn't give a 'Rip'.

In this email I received from him, he explained that they were working on bug fixes that would fix these problems. He also apologized that my email messages were flagged by his spam filter. He was very concerned that I was having the problems I stated in my review.

In my response to him, I told him that I was a reasonable guy and if I had received a response from him, I would have patiently waited for an upgrade. Consequently, I wouldn't have posted that review. (I also recommended that he take a hard look at that spam filter.)

It's nice to know that these programmers care after all.

In the end, he did the right thing by contacting me and explaining things.

After reading this email, I have every confidence that these problems will be fixed in the weeks to come, plus some new features may be added too.

When that day comes, I'll write another review.

However, this one will be much more favorable.

EDX  i am a big fan of the original copypaste and i don't even use many of the features it has. yet this new rewrite of the program is nothing but junk so far. it is slow, won't consistently copy or paste with mouse clicks (the only feature ever making this worth paying for), and the clipboard hierarchy takes up major screen space for no good reason unless you happen to have extremely poor vision. i've tried nearly every update hoping something would improve but it hasn't.

add the insult of the developer not offering an upgrade price for those of us who helped him get this far and i can't really recommend this to anyone anymore! i'm glad my original version didn't stop working with leopard as others have reported. i would still recommend it to all for whom it functions. i'm not saying the original couldn't be improved, but this wasn't the way to try and do it.

LUX  I was quite insistent in my criticism of the new CopyPaste Pro, especially the browser which I thought left quite a lot to be desired when comparing it with using the old version's two palettes. I didn't mention this previously, but I really didn't like the browser at all and how it operated. But after using CopyPaste Pro every day for a week or two, in projects for hours at a time, I have to say now that I am completely won over - it is so fast and along with being able to access individual clips and clip archives from the menu bar, I don't see how CopyPaste Pro can be faulted.

BROZ  This might be the best clipboard utility, but a problem I discovered recently makes me think about switching back to PTHPasteboard.

I use Eclipse to develop software. CopyPaste Pro 1.05, 1.06 hose up the contextual menus in Eclipse. The contextual menus in Eclipse are used all the time, everywhere. If you have to fish around for the same command in the menu bar menus, it wastes time.

Eclipse does not work like ordinary Mac applications. It runs under Java and thus does its menus differently. That's fine, I expect some conflicts now and then. What's bad about CopyPaste pro in this case is that there's no way to disable it. Quitting CopyPaste Pro does not solve the issues. The only way to solve the problems in Eclipse is to uninstall CopyPaste Pro. That's not a very appealing solution.

Yes, I contacted the developer, and I've not received a response. I expect he'll get to it sometime. An elegant solution might be pretty difficult to achieve.

LUX  Well you could read my contribution as a crummy review and I could justify it by saying I'd had a bad day, but when I tried to "archive all clips in history" all clips in history were not archived, resulting in the loss of clips which were vital to the project I was working on.

I also referred to my being unable to find the "archives folder" where I am told it should be. I did nothing unusual when I installed copypaste - I just copied it to the applications folder, so why that particular folder was absent I have no idea. I'm also disappointed that yType is no longer a part of CopyPaste Pro.

I agree that the pro version is significantly different from copypaste x and thinking it would be similar has obviously impeded my getting used to using it. I also agree that since I bought this version, the developer has been very responsive to support requests.

I have to say that compared to the rest, and I've tried them all, CopyPaste has always been the best clipboard utility and I'm pleased to see that the developer is serious about its development.

Since installing the update I can report that I am having no problems whatever with CopyPaste Pro.

I apologise for my previous review which was really a lack of understanding on my part and had little to do with reviewing the app.

JULIAN MILLER  Thanks to all the users who helped pinpoint the problem for some users with the contextual menu. Since we did not have the problem ourselves it really helped to have your input.

Also all the creative suggestions have been invaluable. Many suggestions like the vertical browser will come shortly. If many people all want some particular feature then it moves it to the top of the list of things to put in the next update.

We especially appreciate technical input through the feedback menu item in CopyPaste Pro because it goes straight into a database that we see immediately and allows us to track, follow up and respond better.

DIARBYRAG  Finally got fed up with this program today. in the prefs it has an option to limit the clip history to 10 or whatever, but why is the archive clip not unlimited ? I want to keep lots permanently but only a few temporarily. this is all very unMaclike to me and for that reason it is now in the trash.

unless future versions show some improvement that is where it will stay !

gone back to savvy clipboard, not brilliant but at least I can export my clips as a list and save them where I know they are and I can import them at will.

JULIAN MILLER  To answer your question of why the clip archive is not unlimited. Well, it is. You can as many archives as you want. Each archive has 43 slots and the reason there is 43 is because that is how many usable keys there are on a keyboard. Each can become a hot key you can then use to copy and paste.

To answer you question of why the clip history is not unlimited is because memory on the mac is limited. As you found you can change the number of clips in the history from the default 20 up to whatever you want. We allow you to choose because people have different amounts of RAM on their mac and because some people copy just text (which takes up almost no space) and others copy 20 meg pictures. The person who copies 20 meg pictures will want to limit the number of clips remembered depending on their available RAM.

Thanks for the good questions.

JULIAN MILLER  hi gary,

glad you saw the answer because i have no way to reach you since i don't know who you are.

it would be great if you could fix that 1 star review above. that was a tad harsh. we don't mind getting criticism but 1 is the lowest an application can get and it stays in there system forever.

people who don't know a product look to the stars rating when they are wondering whether to download or not. my guess is that when they see a 1 star rating from a user then they don't download and try it out.

we love criticism and suggestions and bug reports from all users especially our old and loyal users but we also like new users to download and try it out.

GERBER  Huh. Hadn't noticed that before. Apparently "yType", formerly a part of CopyPaste, will now be a stand-alone application.

Still, $20 isn't too bad if it's a worthy upgrade. While it's a big galling to not get the discount I feel I'm entitled to, that's the dev's option.

Still, PTHPasteboard is $25 and does as much or more (or for basic multi-clipboards, it's free -- you only need to pay for text filters), so there's lots of options.

GERBER  Excellent multi-clipboard utility. Unlike many others, CopyPaste does hang when receiving non-standard clipboard data (e.g. Remote Desktop clipboards).

Full support for various text manipulations of the clipboard, access through Dock or menubar or hotkeys, and general stability and trustworthiness are what really make CopyPaste stand apart from the competition. (Even if its text editor and interface seem a little stuck in System 7.)

yType, however, is less well thought out. It responds slowly to auto-correction data, causing erroneous corrections while the typist gets ahead of the machine. Dealing with two capital letters in a row is also problematic. In general, Spell Catcher or TypeIt4Me will do better for auto-correction.

yType remains useful for glossary expansion and auto-expansion of commonly typed words.

JOAO CARLOS DE PINHO  Because CopyPaste has more features. Because it's more customizable. Because it's a completely functional application, and not an incipient app with lots of disabled functions. In sum: because it's better. That's why people pay for it instead of chosing a free option. It's the same reason why people pay for Word/Mellel/Nisus instead of using TextEdit. If Smart Clipboard did the same things and had the same feature set as Copy Paste, you would be right. Always I’ve gotten a prompt and reasonable reply to my email sent... In short, it is a wonderful piece of software all who use the clip board often must have. My hat is off to ScriptSoft... please keep up the great work!

FXT  the memory footprint is now small and constant. i find that this application does its basic job of copying and pasting more efficiently (short simple keystrokes) than other competing application. highly recommended.

FXT  i've noticed that the 2.* versions of copypaste have a pretty bad memory leak. letting copypaste run for a few days without quitting leads to real memory consumptions in the few hundred MB range, with the virtual memory consumption a factor of four higher. this was causing excessive swap file creation. the leak occurs on all six of my macs, from powerbooks to dual processor g5s. quitting and restarting copypaste every so often iisnt a valid solution. i hope this gets fixed soon, or else i'll be forced to consider other options.

ABHI  An anonymous reply to PitzzaMacMan's comment:

| Right, you are correct. Any any 3rd party

| software that does use the menu bar does so

| via a haxie which is not suported by Apple

No, it's only half true. Any third party Menu Extra is a hack that isn't supported by apple. However, Status Items are fully supported by Apple, and pretty much do the same thing.

Menu Extra's use less memory, and have more features (eg. you can move a menu extra around by holding the command key and dragging).

But because menu extra's are a plugin, if they have bugs, they will often bring down the system process that manages all of the loaded Menu Extra's (it probably manages other things too). In more rare cases, a menu extra might even cause a "crash loop", rendering all of the other menu extra's unusable.

But status items are fully self contained, and don't have any of these problems. If they have bugs, those bugs will only effect that one status item. A status item can do pretty much everything a menu extra can do, it's just that they don't integrate with the other items in the menu bar, you can't re-oder them, and they aren't automatically installed when you open them the first time, and you can't uninstall them by holding command and "puffing" them like you would to remove something from the dock.

Now that that's cleared up, feel free to ask the developer to put CopyPaste in the menu bar. There's no reason not to, and it wouldn't take much effort on the developer's end.

STUART ZIMMERMAN, PH.D.  When CopyPaste works, it is a powerful and useful tool. However, about every third time I copy a URL into CopyPaste itlocks up and presents the spinning rainbow of doom. If this is corrected in 2.0, I will puchas it, otherwise not.

PIZZAMACMAN  Menu area is restricted area

re: Comment by X9! - Some info...

I think your wish for moving the icon from the dock to the menu is nearly impossible.

Read some places, that Apple do not want developers access to the menu bar area.

So it might be this issue belongs to Apple, and not the developer of CopyPaste.

DOUG  I have used CopyPaste for ages and love it. I've run into some periodic difficulties but nothing major. Each revision has provided ever more capabilites for the program. I like the menu bar icon, and I like having it in the dock.

I am also surprised at the age of the reviews. The author has made numerous and valuable changes.

X9!  This Developer really needs to look at his suggestion Forum, because myself along with others, and I'm sure others have emailed him, have asked him to put a feature in where we can switch the icon from the dock to the menubar, not cluttering our dock anymore....

I, along with others would buy this software if this feature was enabled...I heard something about re-writing the .plist to do this, but who the hell wants to mess with crap like that?

PLEASE, IMPLEMENT THIS! WE BEG OF YOU! Plus yu'll make $30 extra off of people who want the app with this feature....It's a win/win situation

DESMOND R F FOULGER   My problem is that I've had Copypaste since Noah stepped on dry land and have mislaid my serial number. I've sent 3 E-Mails explaining that my serial number is not on their database and whilst I'm not averse to spending $30 - I feel that I am entitled to the $10 upgrade. Okay, I should have written down my serial number - my fault - BUT they should have a record somewhere and my surname is sufficiently unusual, I feel, for them to be able to track it down.

I would really like to hear from these guys AND HEY - IF THEY GO ON HOLIDAY, HOW ABOUT AN AUTO E-MAIL RESPONSE TO LET PEOPLE KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON?

SHARON  I originally used CopyPaste in OS 9 and waited to move to OS X until it was available. I moved to Panther recently and paniced when I had problems. As usual Julian came through and fixed the problem quickly. I will never be without this program on my desktop or laptop computers. It saves so much time.

ANONYMOUS  Problem: After updating to Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), one or more keys on the keyboard don't work any more (this can include function keys and media keys on the Apple Pro Keyboard).

Solution: This problem is usually caused by 3rd party applications that are installed on your computer and are not (yet) compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.

CopyPaste-X (which can cause an inability to type a lowercase "c") - according to Script Software, a fix for this is being worked on (until that fix is available, the only workaround is to disable or remove the software)

ANONYMOUS  A wonderful program. I was suprised Apple didn't make their own copy and paste better. Well worth the download. I had used the other version for OS9 and I'm happy it's available now.

Beige g3 233MHz; iMac laptop, both with OSX 10.2.6

There's so much that it can get just a bit complicated to use. But it's better having more than enough instead of not enough.
