DANA SUTTON I probably have made this same point a long time ago, but since time has passed and we've seen new versions, I think it's worth repeating now. If you are managing a large and complex Web site on a remote server and are making frequent changes in many of your files, it is an absolute necessity that your FTP client has a scheduling feature that permits periodic automated uploads in the background or when your computer is unattended -- I perform one as frequently as every four hours -- and a FTP client that requires you to make manual upgrades is as useless than a piece of backup software that requires you do the same. In other words, for a Website manager, Transmit is of no use at all. I wish that the developers of this otherwise great product would get this through their thick skulls, they have no ability to understand the needs of site managers. This is serious stuff, guys -- it's the difference between a product aimed at professionals and one only useful for casual users and joy-poppers. (Version 3.6.8)

FATFREDDYSCAT Perhaps they will eventually get it through their "thick skulls" and add the feature you so desperately wish for. But for now, you can just create an Automator workflow to upload your files, and have that workflow run triggered to run as you wish. One way (though by no means the only way) would be to save it as a plugin, and iCal to run that plugin whenever you wish. Or you can just stop whining and use some other product that has the features you need. For many of us, Transmit works just fine as it is. (Version 3.6.8)

GRYPHONENT Used to be the Best but has been abandoned by the developer who simply doesnt seem to care anymore. The app hangs, doesnt complete uploads, and is overall very unreliable when to updating your files on the server. Ive reported those bugs over a year ago and even got a reply from Panic, promising to look into the matter... but alas, nothing has happened since. I reckon they are busy working on Coda, which seems to be the cashcow at the moment for the company. Ive switched to Forklift now. (Version 3.6.7)

TRIZTAN I have signed up for MacUpdate for the sole purpose of informing fellow sufferers of Transmit that there is light at the end of the tunnel !! I've been using Transmit for months and crying with frustration as it hangs and times out on my FTP uploads. Sure it has loads of features and its dead easy to use, but I can help but it just doesnt work properly. I have just discovered FileZilla and I can tell you folks - its FREE, it works and it just motors away without a single error. The transfer rate is way higher and it even has a wizard for checking your connection. Brilliant. Goodbye and good riddance to Transmit !!! (Version 3.6.7)

DAN BRIGGS Very usefull and rock solid. My prefered one. Better (interface, architecture and osx layers implementation) and faster than CaptainFTP, Yummy and Cyberduck. On some features the young Forklift is better. On synchro, Filezilla is better and faster than any other one. Transmit lacks the remote SSH copying from server to server and the remote compression. May be for v4 because i'm tired of using terminal for these things. I did not test Fetch for a long time, did someone do ? (Version 3.6.7)

FRODO_LIFE good FTP client if it would not delete your files. Transmit has the habit to first delete a folder on your server and then replaces it which made me lose all my shopping cart settings. Say you need to update your cart and replace the folder admin I delete the config.php file from my updated folder and then drag the folder which does not contain the config.php file on my server so what does transmit do it deletes the whole folder on my server and replaces it with my new one without the config.php file. Any other FTP client I have used like Captain, Yummy, Cyberduck will only replace the existing files but will not delete the whole folder first which also deletes your config file. So be very aware. TEXINICK I can understand your frustration... the same thing happened to me. Upon further inspection though, when you upload a folder, you are given the option to Replace or Merge. Choosing Merge will do what you want. I just uploaded an update to Joomla, and even though I chose Merge, I was then asked for every file whether I wanted to Resume/Replace etc. I had selected Apply To All, and clicked Replace, and still I kept getting asked the same question for each file. So it WILL overwrite the changed files and retain the rest of the folder, but the problem with Transmit, for me, is that you are given too many prompts. You are in danger of hitting the return button, or mouse button, on an incorrect button just because you are going through the motions for each file. If I select "Apple To All', and then click the Replace button, I don't want to see that prompt again. (Version 3.6.7)

MR.ASH Transmit gives you a very nice GUI and iss very easy in use. However data transfer is very slow and unstable. I've tried to copy 250 GB of date to my NAS and i got only a max. 5 MB/s transfer speed. On top of that Transmit always got files witch could not be transferred and terminated the connection completly giving you no feedback what has been already copied and what not. Not worth it's money at all. I've tried the same thing using FileZila and it works like a charm. Of course there is still data witch can't be transferred but FileZila doesn't quit the connection and continues copying the other files moving the not copied files to a seperate window. GUI is not very nice but compared to Transmit it works. (Version 3.6.6)

BUBBAMAC Does not respond to support requests. I submitted a bug a year ago regarding the droplet's not obeying passwordless rsa key authentication via sftp. The favorite themselves work fine with passwordless sftp but when saving a favorite to a droplet it doesn't work. Create a favorite with sftp as the protocol and do not set the password (you must configure ssh keys without passwords so that you can ssh to the client without passwords). Don't check prompt for password. Connect and verify that you can get in without a password, if not, you should follow these directions: http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/152 Now, after it works without a password, create a droplet from this favorite. Tell it to not prompt for password. When you drag something on the droplet, the username isn't populate and the transfer fails. Even if you tell it to prompt for password (and you leave this blank), it fails. The only way around it is to configure the favorite with a saved password, and save the password in the droplet. Everytime they release an update, I try the software again, but until this issue gets addressed, I will not buy it. (Version 3.6)

JASS I've use Transmit for 6 months. I only use the SFTP protocol. For just $25 it's much easier to use than an sftp from the terminal or ssh tunneling + a server connection. It has all the features I need and use. You can pre-set file permissions on uploads, you can set it to ask you what to do if a file of the same name already exists, you can have multiple connections open, and it supports a tab-bar like Firefox/Safari for your connections. Perfect little tool! (Version 3.5.6)

Clear, uncluttered user interface, all the features you need, reasonable price. J.AILEY Transmit is the FTP app for me. I have tried a multitude of FTP apps, and I always come back to Transmit. Of all the available, Transmit is the one with the features, organization and flexibility I need. Transmit can handle FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, you name the type, Transmit can probably connect to it. The main window is ingenious. If I want to view both local and remote files, I can do that. If I want drag and drop ease of just seeing remote files I can do that. Any setup I want, I can have. Preview drawer? Yep! A drawer for shortcuts to local and remote folders? Yep! Favorites? Yep! Transmit has it all. Transmit gives you the ability to remote edit files using whatever app you want. Wanna edit an image on your Web server with Photoshop? Transmit will let you do it. Want to transfer a file from one FTP to another? Transmit will let you drag an drop files between server tabs. No need for multiple windows. Speaking of server tabs, they are great! The only thing I wish I could do, (or at least I haven't figured out how to do yet) is to be able to set the default number of tabs, and the servers in them. I often connect to two servers at once, it would be nice if I could get them both to auto-connect when Transmit launches. Droplets are AWESOME! Dock Send is awesome! Driving truck widgets are AWESOME! Transmit is AWESOME! In the time I have been using Transmit, I have not had a problem with it. If I could not get it to connect, it was due to my own ignorance. It connects fast and easy. It down/uploads with drag and drop ease. Haven't had a crash. Haven't had a mangled file. I have had no problem whatsoever! It is almost a shame though...a problem would give me a reason to try out their support! Transmit seems almost as if it is part of OSX itself. Make a Bonjour droplet to transfer files from one Mac on your network to another. Then, just drop the files on the droplet, don't hunt for connected servers. Despite Transmit's awesomeness, there are a few things I wish it could do, though. 1. I wish it would watch a remote folder for changes, and notify of an upload. 2. I wish it had scheduling ability. It would be great to set it to upload, or synchronize while I was sleeping. 3. The previously mentioned tabs. Despite this, Transmit is still THE FTP app for me. If you haven't tried it, give it a try. One final thing... The dreaded price discussion. While I do not at all feel bad for paying $30 for Transmit. I do wish it were a bit cheaper. Some people may feel that dealing with some FTP inadequacies will be fine if it will save them a few bucks. But, I think if the price were lower, more people would see the greatness that is Transmit, and become devoted users. Thank you Panic for making THE rear-rockin FTP client! (Version 3.5.6)

GRYPHONENT Transmit was great. Long ago. The latest versions have been buggy and support is truly unresponsive with updates coming in long stretches and not addressing the problems at hand. As has been mentioned in this forum before, Transmit interrupts long transfers and backups, reports all kind of errors, is unreliable in determining whether a file is newer on the local drive or on the server, and lacks features compared to other (newer) contender out there (YummyFTP for example). Propably Panic is banking on upgrade fees for version 4, but with a software that was buggy to start with I'm very reluctant to stay with Transmit or Panic for that matter. Transmit is not a cheap product... I'm disappointed. (Version 3.5.5)

ALAN First of all, Transmit is the best FTP client I have ever used. I purchased it right after the first use. Suggestion: can the next release feature something like 'separators' within folders? It's useful for us who hold loads and loads of files and would like to separate them into different categories (besides name-size-date view). Nevertheless, Transmit is the best.

STARBRO No "keep alive" options. Uploading a large file that takes longer than the server's timeout setting will stall the upload when it tries to complete. Sometimes it will re-connect and start again from the beginning. Considering FTP programs from 10 yrs ago could handle this scenario, it seems ludicrous that a modern app can't even do this correctly. Buyer beware. (Version 3.5.5)

What you are experiencing is not actually related to the timeout of the FTP server, but an overly-aggressive router somewhere between you and the server that is shutting down the control connection because it sits idle during the transfer. It is not a Transmit-specific problem. Usually, if a customer affected by this problem sends us their connection information, we are unable to reproduce the problem, simply because we have a different route to the server than they do. Please see this URL for more information: http://www.ncftp.com/ncftpd/doc/misc/ftp_and_firewalls.html#FirewallTimeouts We have been able to resolve this problem for many users by doing the following: 1. Go to the Advanced Preferences (hold down option while choosing the Preferences menu item) 2. Select the server that is experiencing the issue, and click the edit (pencil) icon 3. Checkmark "Keep connections alive during long transfers" Another option is to use SFTP if possible, as it uses only a single socket per connection, and is far more secure. Panic, Inc. NAHEL SAIED It Stalls. It stops in the middle of long transfers and you have to start over and over again. E-mailed customer service and 2 weeks later got a reply instructing me to Check "Keep connection alive during long transfer" from Advanced preference. Did that and still does the same I have to try 3-4 times before a 20+ files go through. I paid for this software and I think I will go with another FTP software cause I can't put up with this any more. Do not recommend at all if you are going to ftp files bigger than 10 MB (Version 3.5.5)

Bad: Doesn't allow prescheduled uploads (as Yummy does) notification via Growl (like Yummy) or e-mail (like Chronosync). JUSTINNORMAN Transmit X continues to get better with each new version. As a Web designer, this has been my main program for updating my Web sites for over a year now. It's stable, simple, and a joy to use. I haven't tried many other (non-free) FTP applications, so I can't really compare this to much else. All I can say is that the features offered here have been worth the cost for me. Since I have many Web sites to update, the fact that I can have an FTP bookmark correspond to a certan folder on my hard drive is great. That way, when I click on the name of a Web site, it pulls up that site in right-hand FTP frame, while simultaneously opening the corresponding folder on my hard driv in the left frame. It's then a matter of dragging and dropping the files from left to right, rather than hunting through a maze of folders to get the files I need, most of the time. The Transmit window also works very well as a substitute for the Finder in many ways. I can rename files on my computer and drag them to different locations without having to leave the program. Unfortunately, if I click on a .fla file (Flash animation) it won't open the Flash application, so I have to go to the Finder to do that (which is not really that big of a deal). However, I can double-click any HTML or other text-based file and edit the text within Transmit. While a customizable list of applications to use per file type (such as those included in some Web browsers) would be nice, Transmit has enough useful features to make it a reliable tool that I use almost every day. When I switch back to Transmit 3.5.1, it works fine. Please don't release unstable software that could potentially cause someone to accidentally wipe an entire Web site. (Version 3.5.2)

SMTIPS 10.4.6 came out one week ago and you're blaming all the problems on Transmit? have you looked at macintouch and seen the SCADS of networking problems people are having with 10.4.6?? I don't think these guys build unstable software. Most of their apps always receive top reviews. Probly a combination of 10.4.6 and the update is the fault. Apple is VERY famous for breaking 3rd party apps with their updates, you know that. I like Transmit. It's a great FTP app. The reason I don't use it is because it doesn't support http/website downloading like Interarchy does. (Version 3.5.3)

TAINT For some reason after updating to 3.5 every time I upload a large .zip file it seems to upload twice. I'll drag the file to the "Their stuff" side and it starts to transfer. it estimates a time until completion and then when it gets to be that time it uploads the file all over again. Pretty annoying when I am uploading a 400 MB file. (Version 3.5)

AFD Im a HUGE transmit lover, however be forwarned if you upgrade to 3.5 and you are a bbedit user... If you open up a server file for editing you will no longer see the remote file path in BBedit. You will be shown a temporary path on your local machine to a transmit cache directory. This makes it impossible to know what file you are working on, and if you open multiple index.php's etc in different directories on a site then youre pretty much out of luck. I received an email from panic regarding the issue: That is a result of a change in the way we handle external editing. We no longer rely on BBEdit to handle any of the "file has been edited" communication, and there is no way to really "fake" the old way we used to do it. Overall, its better now the way it is, but there is that disadvantage particular to BBEdit. I've also put in an email to bare bones and the developer who got back to me wasn't aware of this in the new transmit version as he hadn't upgraded yet... It doesnt look good from panics end, and I don't have any plans of leaving bbedit thats for sure... (Version 3.5)

ALANR That's exactly the way I use Transmit 99% of the time. As a layer between BBEdit and a server. Using WebDAV it's very, very fast. But this is a killer for me. This and the lag time I mentioned in a previous comment leaves me a Transmit 3.2.1 user. The extras that come in 3.5 are trivial to me. I tried 3.5 for a couple hours then reinstalled 3.2.1. (Version 3.5)

KAINJOW I experienced this too when I first opened Transmit 3.5. What I believe it does now is it uses the default app that would normally open that type of program. So, for example I had a PHP page I wanted to edit in BBEdit from Transmit. By default it opened in SubEthaEdit. So I went to the Finder, selected a PHP page, Get Info'd it and changed it to open with BBEdit. Now Transmit edits the file in BBEdit like it originally did. You'll probably have to make this change for all file types that don't correctly open in BBEdit (or your favorite editor). (Version 3.5.1)

ALANR > I experienced this too when I first opened Transmit 3.5. You apparently are using 3.5.1 and you're not addessing the issue the original poster and I had with 3.5. The BBEdit path problem was with 3.5 and it's been fixed in 3.5.1. (Version 3.5.1)

BOBWEINER With the new 3.5 release I've noticed something odd happening (which never happened before in previous releases). Notably, if I've stayed logged into an FTP site for more than an hour, and attempt to copy a file from 'my stuff' to a folder in 'their stuff', I get an error. I have to then disconnect and reconnect, at which point said file copies over without any problems. I've never had this problem before - it seems to be introduced with 3.5. Any suggestions on what I could do to fix this problem, assuming it's a setting issue? (Version 3.5)

ALANR In Transmit 3.5 there is a very noticeable lag when selecting a file with the mouse. Folders can be selected and they'll be immediately highlighted. Not so with files, there's a long pause when nothing seems to happen. This is negative performance when compared to the previous version 3.2.1 (Version 3.5)

DANA SUTTON Aw come on, setting this kind of scheduling up via iCal sounds like a real Rube Goldberg lashup that would allow the software author to dodge doing his job by placing waaay too much responsiblity on the individual user. Surely it isn't unrealistic to expect that a scheduling routine with a FTP client can and should be as easy to set up as one for a file synchronizer. Of course I expect Apple scripts are working in the background in both kinds of app., but the question is what kind of front end the programmer chooses to set up for their creation. (Version 3.2)

ANONYMOUS If you really want to do any serious file sync over FTP it would be way more efficient and practical to just script it on the command line. DANA SUTTON There was a time when I used Transmit and thought it the best available FTP client. But I manage a large and complex Web site that changes content almost daily, and wanted a FTP client that could schedule automatic uploads like a piece of file synchronization software. I wrote to the developer suggesting he add this feature. Next to no interest, he made it clear that this just wasn't on his agenda. Along comes Yummy, a very similar-looking app. in the same price range, but with more features, including scheduled synchronization. I liked it, but didn't like the primitive logging/notification system it had at the time. So I contacted its author, and the next build was rewritten to be Growl-friendly, which took care of that problem. I had some other problems with the implementation of scheduling and the developer was very eager to work with me to iron them out. And that's the difference, folks. A developer who is willing to listen to users, give them what they ask for, and work with them to improve his product pretty soon comes up with better software. Yummy is better than Transmit, and is getting more so all the time for precisely this reason. (Version 3.2)

ANONYMOUS With this version of Transmit you could setup an Automator workflow that would synchronize your website on specified schedule. To do this, configure the workflow in Automator (Transmit includes a synchronize Automator action.) and then save it as a plugin for iCal. Once you've saved the workflow you can have it run on the schedule you configure in iCal. Transmit can work on a schedule, you just have to use the functionality that's provided (in this case Automator/Applescript) and configure it to do so. The developers probably didn't add scheduling becuase you can already do that with Transmit's Applecript functionality. (Version 3.2)

CABEL SASSER To clarify some misconceptions: - Transmit checks once a week to see if a new version of Transmit is available. - Absolutely no personal information is sent, there are never any serial number checks. Only the version number is sent, and nothing else. - We've added an option to Transmit's preferences to disable this check if you don't want it. (You may need to re-download Transmit to get it.) Just turn this check off -- we won't mind. Transmit does not secretly "phone home" to our servers with any personal info at any time. Period. KEVIN BALLARD Dude, you're complaining about Panic because people are rating Unison badly? There's two reasons I see why Unison gets bad ratings: 1) At least one person used to think it was free and is complaining that it costs money. It never was free. 2) People complaining about missing features. The way I see it, Unison was meant to be a fairly simple usenet reader for people who haven't gotten into usenet because either they're not power users or because they don't like the poor interfaces (just guessing - never actually used any others) of other readers. Basically, Unison was (as I see it, I could be wrong) meant to be a reasonably lightweight but nice-looking usenet reader, and people are complaining because of this. The only really valid complaint I can see is that Panic seems to have an extremely long update cycle for Unison without much user feedback on reported issues. I do understand why this is not desirable, but it's certainly not a crime (nor is it all that uncommon). I personally have no problem giving Panic money - I like Transmit, and I liked Audion back when there was a reason to use it (back before iTunes dominated the market). Granted, I probably won't buy Transmit 3, but that's just because I use FTP so rarely that it's not worth it. I bought Transmit 2 and I am perfectly happy using that. (Version 3.0.1)

TERA PATRICKS - MAC360.COM I've used Transmit almost forever. :-0 This is a great Mac application. Yes, FTP on the Mac is free but CLI is for a different class of Mac user. For the rest of us we want point and click simplicity, and loads of features as we get better at implementing new items. There are few Mac apps that do the job as well as Transmit. Not only do I use it to move files back and forth, but Transmit is great at simple editing of remote PHP and config files and is the only application I have that makes it easy to change Unix permissions (777, etc.) in a way that's easy to understand. The new features in 3.x are worthy and evolutionary, not revolutionary (hey, it's FTP). This app is stable, dependable, and has never let me down except when used on HostSave accounts (for some reason only Windows FTP apps worked well). Great application. Keep up the good work, Panic. JUSTIN NORMAN Fast loading, quick FTP program that has great features. I've been using it since version 2.6.2, and it's been great for updaing the Web sites I work on. It's got a great interface, lots of functionality, and is very stable. The only thing that I wish they would have included in this version is the ability to select your own external editor (they limit your choices to a list). It would also be nice to double-click Flash files and Quicktime movies in "My Stuff" and have them open in their respective programs, rather than coming up with a blank window. (Version 3.0)

BRANDON This is such a gigantic step for FTP ease of use that it boggles my mind. After purchasing Transmit 2 some time ago, I honestly had a difficult time thinking of ways to improve the program. Panic is by far the most innovative thinkers in their genre. Of course, the best user interface ideas are always the most simple ones. Column view is a must, but they have gone the extra mile in terms of spring-loaded folders. The sidebar, borrowed from the Finder, has already saved me minutes a day. Being a Web Developer, that is time I can use elsewhere. Tabs that not only work, but function in a drag-and-drop scenerio, pure genius. In short, for roughly $18 this is the easiest decision I have had to make all year. Thanks to the wonderful crew at Panic for constantly amazing me. My money arrived the day it was released. MACMATH Thank you again, Panic. I certainly find the new features compelling enough to warrant the upgrade price. I paid for it right away. To those who are complaining about the price: I like things for free as much as the next guy, but you realize that you can't keep using future updates for something of this quality for free and be able to take it with you to your grave. In case you haven't noticed, the old shareware model "pay for it once and all future updates are free" has been essentially dead for some time now. These days that only applies to minor applications that someone really built for themselves and which take little development time...they also stop being developed at some point after an OS update breaks them. That old shareware model does not work for significant applications like Transmit because: 1) Too many people are dishonest and pirate licenses; 2) It takes regular development to keep improving these applications so that they are still relevant (get new features important to new users) and still work with the next OS update. It takes money to feed the people who do that. Note: LaunchBar, Graphic Converter, DragThing, etc. all wanted additional money with a recent upgrade. I noticed that someone mentioned Captain FTP (it might have been at that other software update place). I went to look it over to see what they were talking about and chuckled when I saw the financial aspect of the ftp application they were using to argue against Transmit and its upgrade price. Captain FTP costs $25, but if you want to purchase 'price protection' for the next year, you can spend $34 and get the updates over the next year for free!!! Transmit 2 came out in October of 2002 and we did not get charged for anything up through Transmit 2.6.2, which came out over a year later. By-the-way, Captain FTP crashed the second time I started it, and was sluggish involving anything having to do with the GUI (no wonder...the download weighs in at 9 MB). (Version 3.0)

KLONDIKE KID - ALASKA I too am a registered user of Tranx 2.0 and will be paying the upgrade price. 3.0 is just an order of magnitude better than its predecessor if that is possible. The sidebar and column view navigation speeds up major jumps through layers of folders. And calling up a file to edit from within the program is a real time saver and convenience And oh, the nicest feature?...Link Folder Navigation!!! The developers just cut my navigation time in HALF with that capability. But that feature seems a bit unstable with occasional "disconnects" from the linking but its not a problem going back up to the menu and re-establishing the link again. Now, for my Wish List I passed on to them...recognition of Color Labeling for files, folders, and icons to speed up column view navigation an additional notch on the speedometer. Thanks for a product that continues to get better on each version. Running G5 Dual with 10.3.7 with no problems. Seems a bit faster on uploading and session closing too! (Version 3.0)

DARREN Without a doubt, Transmit 3 is the best Mac FTP app out there. Bought it back at v.2, upgraded today to 3. Had to rewrite a few AppleScripts (took a while to figure out the new syntax, sample scripts should have more ... well, samples for adding tabs and such). Once I got my scripts fixed up, they were noticibly smaller and more logical. Nice job Panic. Was enamored with the tab options of some of the more expensive Windows FTP apps, but no longer. Transmit is the cat's meow! And tabs!! Awesome! Scripted tabs!! Well done guys n' gals. (Version 3.0)

BOBWEINER tabbed panes, column view navigation, and easy access to favorite folders - these features alone make the upgrade worthwhile. I use Transmit on a regular basis. It's proven to be worthless. The first time it got an error (couldn't fetch list of files), the offending folder was deleted from the batch, then it went on to the next folder, errored, deleted it from the list, went on to the next, errored &deleted it, ... Pressing "Stop" made no difference, it kept moving on to the next folder, erroring and deleting. The only way that I could actually get it to stop purging folders from my batch was to continuously click on "Stop" and then use "Enter" to dismiss the error alert that popsup. (Version 2.6.2)

IONYZ That is the expected behavior, at least for an "ease-of-use" perspective. This way you can use that URL elsewhere and be logged in automatically. But why complain about being able to paste your password when your using a protocol (FTP) that sends both your password and data unencrypted to servers? If your at all concerned about security consider using SFTP instead. (Version 2.6.2)

KLONDIKE KID Been using the software for over six months now and really giving it a work out. I maintain a number of sites with daily file updates on most. This program is a real workhorse and has not failed or crashed in all the time I have been running it on OS X 10.3.5 on a G5 Dual 2ghz and an iBook G4. The features are so intuitive you can run this program right from the "box" without any help. I really love the ability to change file names on the HD and remote servers as easily as in a Finder window. And the "highlight-cmd-delete" for instant file deletion is a real time saver. Multiple Ques makes it great for maximizing bandwidth usage. And simultaneous multiple sessions increases my productivity for updates to several servers at the same time. I haven't found a single flaw in this program yet. Rock solid stability. My hat's off to Panic for an exceptional product. And to think I was using Fetch since 1995 until just a few months ago. ANONYMOUS FTP, as a protocol, is not secure anyway. You're passwords are always sent plain-text and any network sniffer can pick them up. There are some methods of encrypting your passwords, such as FTP over SSL or using SSH and sFTP, but I would be more worried about connecting to servers with an FTP client rather than someone viewing your passwords on a local computer. That said, Transits a nice FTP client, I prefer it to any other I've tried! (Version 2.6.2)

WILL This is a pretty good FTP program, however it is far from perfect. When I download a complete directory, it freezes on file which it cannot download. ANONYMOUS Why can't we have selective uploads and downloads? I mean, why can't we specify only HTML files for example? '*.htm*'? And when you start a big upload or download, the views do not follow what the program is doing - they stay stock still and you see little snippets of paths and you have NO CLUE where the program is and how far it's got! And heavens, but you could click all over the place and start changing directories right in the middle of a big transfer - what would happen? I don't dare try to figure that one out - this is multi-threaded FTP, but I don't think these Transmit boys have a clue. It's wide open and anything goes. More like a hackers tool than a commercial app. When you're transferring a directory hierarchy, the program should follow you along. When it goes down to a subdirectory, both views should follow along. And PLEASE - when you finish a transfer operation, update (refresh) the views? Seeing the file size on the right does me no good when I realize the program is not reporting back on the size of the upload, but only 'stealing' the data from 'your stuff'! Just refresh the wretched listing please! And how many times can you not see what's really happened in 'your stuff' - Transmit will not do a hard refresh. Like with Camino, if you refresh, Camino tries to figure out what needs updating, but if you do Shift-Refresh, Camino will reload everything. But Transmit has no way to force a complete refresh. If you copy and move files in Terminal while Transmit is working, Transmit won't see the changes and you can click the Refresh button for a year and nothing will change. I wrote to Caleb and he said 'change directory and then change back' is that any solution? When the program starts up it can see what's there - why can't it do it again?

ANONYMOUS The design is nigh-on perfect, but the coding is dangerous. I've lost important files because of this app. It's got multiple execution threads going all over the place with the rationale 'if you can find a button to click, it's ok' and that just doesn't work. Right from the get-go there are logical bombs all over the place. The Connect button is enabled even though you don't have a server listed there yet. You can ask the program to refresh a listing, but it's involved in another operation and the request goes in a queue and by the time it comes out you're refreshing the wrong list. Watch how Get Info works on remote directories - 'their stuff'. When you click 'Apply Now' the selection in 'their stuff' MOVES DOWN to the next file but the Get Info box stays on screen - no correlation. And that selection in 'their stuff' is going to get you in trouble: if you choose to delete a file on 'their stuff' while Transmit is uploading, your 'delete' operation will go in a queue, but Transmit has not noted what file you want deleted. And then when it gets around to deleting for you, the selection has moved because of the upload and the wrong file is deleted. I like Transmit - I like the layout and the thinking behind it. But whoever these programmers are, they need to grow up and get their act together. They should take a lesson from their design team who have done an excellent job. Transmit is the best FTP program for OS X but it's way to buggy to be taken seriously. (Version 2.6.2)

GEORGE KRUEGER I just happily sent in my registration fee for this application. This is the best FTP client for the Macintosh (especially OSX) that I've tried. It is quick and easy to use. It allows you to edit documents right from the server. It has a very intuitive bookmark system. In short, this has everything you could want in an FTP client. I just want to reiterate how quick this application is. Other FTP clients seem slow as a DOG when changing directories. I used to just do most of my uploads from the command line because of that. I don't get that with this program, and that is the primary reason I chose to purchase this FTP client, as opposed to any of the others out there. (Version 2.6.2)

BRENT TRAUT What does an ideal FTP application look like? It looks like Transmit X 2.6.2. As far as FTP applications go, this is the best. Transmit's FTP capabilities are as great as many other clients available today, but in my opinion, it's best feature is it's bookmark handling. It allows users to set up all the basic FTP bookmarking preferences, but also allows for a local folder display. When I go to log onto my server for btraut.com, it not only logs me on but also displays all the files in my Sites/btraut.com/ folder. This allows me to use it hand in hand with whatever web editor I want. Transmit doesn't have every feature underneath the sun. It does, however, have every one needed for perfect ease of use. It has everything needed for a professional, but isn't so bogged down with bells and whistles that a beginner can't use it. Although Transmit isn't free, its price is extremely reasonable. I paid for my copy soon after downloading it.

AGGRO I'm a bit disappointed with Transmit. I have a "Rumpus" server on a Mac G3 Minitower running OSX 10.2.8 for composing my music and need people to be able to log in and download. Now out of my hundreds to thousands of sound samples, if there is a SPACE in the name of the file, Transmit always comes back with errors that the file may not be found. Also, I have a pretty in-depth folder structure and 75% of the folders can not be entered nito because for some odd reason, they are not even recognized and do not even show up in the Transmit FTP window. Also, when someone tries to download a sample FILE, it shows up as a FOLDER on their computer with NOTHING in it and even if its attributes are changed, it is still unopenable. What's the deal Panic! $25.00 for this! WTF! I'll stick with Fetch or Vicom FTP. NEVER a problem with those. (Version 2.6.1)

STEVENF I'm not aware of Transmit having any problems handling files with spaces. Depending on the server used, Transmit may have difficulty recognizing files that have one or more spaces at the _very beginning_ of the filename. But spaces in the middle are generally not a problem, as long as the server can handle it. (Not all servers can.) I also have never heard of a problem with files being downloaded as folders. BG Transmit is great. I only have a few issues: No "column view". I hate the list view it forces. Too hard to navigate back and forth, which you do a lot with FTP. Also I think it has too much wasted screen space. What's with the huge borders around the "My stuff" and "Their stuff" panes? I'd like the scroll bar for the pane on the right to be flush with the edge of the window so I can just flick my mouse to the right side of the screen and scroll, like most other applications (I also have the same issue with iTunes ugh). It would also be very cool if they had a tabbed interface so I could have several sessions opened at once (multiple windows is way too cumbersome). Even so, Transmit is the best you will find on the Mac (though some Windows ftp clients make me jealous). (Version 2.5.1)

KARL BECKER I've always gotten by with an old shareware version of Vicomsoft FTP (the Lite version, which was absolutely free!) until I switched to Mac OS X. Since then (about a year ago!) I've been using various versions of Transmit and just always doing a quick upload before the ten minutes expired (I don't use FTP too much). But I just bought it after having enough of this nonsense. This is a great FTP program that I'm sure will only continue to get better with the years. Panic's a great company, I'm glad to pay them a little cash! (Version 2.5.1)

AP. FTP for the majority of users. I ALWAYS try to steer Mac users to this product. I've used it for two years (started out in classic) and it's always been easy and trouble free. There are lots of nice features in other (more expensive and less user friendly) FTP apps for Mac and PC, but I've never really missed them using Transmit. (Version 2.5.1)

ANONYMOUS Excellent FTP Program ....BUT....... SSL support needs to be added to be considered a real contender to be used with most servers in the real world. For encryption, SFTP is great but is really only used on UNIX servers and macs at this point. Most windows servers with encryption are using SSL currently and thus needs to be added to be completely full featured (Version 2.5.1)

ANONYMOUS Outstanding application! I've been using Transmit for quite some time. I moved from the OS9 version as soon as Transmit X was avaliable. This latest version is faster. I like the icon ; ) (Version 2.5)

ANONYMOUS (sorry, I left out some words) Please read: "when Anonymous says if you are having trouble getting Transmit to work you need to check your system configuration, he means you need to check your firewall settings. (Version 2.5)

ANONYMOUS The best FTP client just got a lot better (except for the lame icon). When Anonymous says if you are having trouble getting Transmit to work, he means you need to check your firewall settings. (Version 2.5)

KRISHNA SADASIVAM Excellent update to a utility I have come to rely on for the last several years. Transmit has proven itself to be stable, quick, and full-featured. Version 2.5 does seem to be even more responsive than the previous version. Kudos to Panic! (Version 2.5)

ANONYMOUS I've been using FTP for years, on various platforms, with various front-end clieents (in addition to command-line transfers using telnet and ftp). Transmit is among the best FTP clients I've used yet, in particular for its stability, simplicity & speed. Those who posted that they're having problems might want to look at how their systems are setup, rather than blame Transmit. This client is rock solid. After a month or so of trials (and trying other apps, like RBrowser lite, fetch, etc.), I paid for it happily. It is obviously head-and-shoulders above the rest. I agree I'd like to see the tabbed features in a future release! That would be the icing on the cake... (Version 2.3)

ANONYMOUS This one is the best application for FTP and more. I've been using Transmit since version 1.0 and have always found it to be a solid work horse. It has enabled me to take care of file management for multiple sites with ease and consistant performance year after year. I've used multiple applications for both PC and Mac over the years and always launch Transmit when there is serious work to be done. Thanks to the guys at Panic for some excellent software that is way beyond anything else available. This app (along with GraphicConverter and a couple of others) are at the top rung of shareware. ERIC I was using Transmit for several months. After this new release I have to ditch it! There are no any improvements just making a fuse. SFTP crashes, BBEdit freezes, speed is under any words, support the worst I've ever met! That's enough for me! bye Transmit. I'm going to RBrowser. Even Lite is better. (Version 2.1)

BLEE Great Job, a major improvement from the last beta I was beginning to think that they would never release a final version. As tempted as I am to pay for a full copy theres still atleast 1 feature that I'm looking for that LiFtp has which is tabbed browsing for connecting to multiple servers so instead of opening a new window to connect to another server a new tab is opened in the current window to connect to a new server. Liftp is still in beta but it's showing much progress with atleast 1 update a week sometimes 2 or 3. (Version 2.0)
