For whatever reason, recently (perhap 10.4.9 update?) i'm seeing a malfunction when exporting as pictures from the contextual menu. The 'Preview' pict is okay. The 'Icon' pict is often the graphic for an entirely different icon. Usually it's a microslough office icon.

JIMW If you want to spend money finagle around, take more time but have a few more customization options to coin your own icons, this may be worth examining. But if you are looking for a way to just customize folders, and label them with your application icon, quickly and easily, with a minimum of fuss - all for free or a donation, with a proven stable product, and all from a contextual menu on the fly; I still prefer Viou. If you are considering Folder Icon X, I would recommend you also take a peek at Viou and make an informed decision between them. (Version 2.1.9)

JIMW I find it interestig that you seem to have access to a competitors development schedule. Just what do you base your conclusions on? What is the source of your information about the Viou development group's plans, or lack of them for future releases? I don't profess to have any inside information or knowledge about their plans, but given the size of the development group and the fact their website generally indicates that this is not their full time profession; along with current work on other projects, it does not suprise me that their are long periods between releases. Frankly it speaks well of their code given that it is solid enought to survive an major OS upgrade without needing change. However given the introduction of a processor change and the Autumn release of Leapard, I personally would not be suprised to see an update release for Viou by the next MacWorld. As I intimated, it is only a 'gut' feeling but Viou is currently an actively distributed product, and does its job very well for those that can use it on their PPC machines. (Version 3.0.2)

Oof. My little comment was meant as a matter of info for people passing by. I didn't think it worth a response. It's just seldom that a small scale software project goes 3 years before an upgrade if it's under active development, especially through both OS and processor changes. I had also noticed web site info doesn't extend beyond 2005 and talks mostly about Panther, with tiger only getting a mention or two. Some pages still show things released in 2004 designated as "New". I wasn't putting down the software. While Viou is impressive in some ways, it just never suited me as well as Folder Icon X, but FIX has some irritants which have persisted through several updates while other aspects improved. I became interested in exploring Viou more fully right about the time i got my Mac Pro and found the Contextual menu no longer functional an important aspect. I don't find any icon tools entirely satisfactory and i'd like to see Viou return. (Version 3.0.2)

JIMW Actually the last entries were in 2006 at http://www.lny.mine.nu/Pages/News.html .Reading the newsletter of the sites indicates that he has run into the limitations of .mac and is frustrated by it. It also strikes me as a minimalist low budget operation and it would not suprise me if he did not have an Intel based machine and buying one would be a significant financial strain on the group. However this is nothing more than congecture and opinion. However given what he charges for software and the fact he is maintaining a website other than .mac, indicates to me that their is a good chance that the groups development days are not yet finished. I think the best way to resolve this is to ask him, which I now intend to do, but if I were a betting man I would not wager on any future profolic output. But then again stranger things have happened. After all I believe it was years between when Turly did his last update for FinderPop under Classic, indicating it would be retired and then about a year ago he produced a new version for OS X. That is why, until I hear from the developer differently, the future of Voiu is anyones best guess. And that is all it is - editoralizing and best guesses - on both our parts. (Version 3.0.2)

JIMW This is an appoved response by the developer of Viou: After contacting the developer, through his website, I have received an extremely prompt, courteous and informative reply indicating that Viou is still very much alive and well. In fact it is undergoing future development, and has an anticipated release date sometime after Leopard comes out and will be fully compatible with Intel Mac's. As to why it is taking so long, the developer confirmed that much of my conjecture in my previous comments was fairly accurate. Viou is most certainly not dead. (Version 3.0.2)

FLARCH Dropping files or folders on the wells in prefs has NEVER worked for me since i began using this something like a million versions ago! Altered perspective icons aren't antialiased. Badly needs to scale graphics pasted as one of the icons. Still no way to merge more than 2 icons without saving and loading the saved one as "folder icon". Would be nice to be able to create the dropping variant instead of having to create and save it first, create the normal one, and then add the dropping variant. Would be great to be able to turn the "Show Rectangular Frame" pref on and off from the UI. Needs a way to add a few letters of text. Viou has it's uses. (Version 2.1.4)

MACLECTIC The app crashed when I Select Picture... (selecting a JPEG saved from Photoshop) in v1.9.5 or 1.9.7 running OS X 10.3.5 on my PBG4-1.5Ghz. So this feature may have been broken for some time, but I haven't used it recently. Very sad, since selecting a picture and a mask was one of the better features. - Maclectic (Version 1.9.7)

FLARCH This has been a favorite piece of software for a long time and it has come a long way! However, it needs 3 things: 1 - SCALING LOGO ICONS NEEDS TO BE DONE PROPERLY SO THEY DON'T LOOK ALIASED! 2 - Would be great to be able to add a few letters of text to an icon 3 - It needs a slick way of layering more than 2 icons. 4 - The skew icon functionality needs to be broadened and improved! (Yes, this is virtually an exact duplicate of my review for v.1.9.3 with item 1 stressed, and item 4 added.) (Version 1.9.6)

ANONYMOUS Seems to do what it says it will do but not really the right app for me. I still can't find much better than iConverter. It isn't comperable to this app, as it doesn't try at all to "combine icons". All it does is convert between a few graphics formats & a couple icon formats. Do your icon creation in Photoshop & then convert your photoshop file into an icon. Compared to that, Icon X just doesn't give me a lot of control so its not quite right for me. It does have a decent set of prepared icon templates (folders, disc icons, etc.) which is nice, but I can get those into PS without much trouble anyway so again... not really a big enough benifit for me. Good for the casual user though I suppose. (Version 1.9.6)

KURU I care about how my folders look, and this little app is definitely the most powerful way to customise folder icons. MacOSX does this already? What a joke! All OSX can do is paste already-prepared icons onto files/folders. FolderIconX allows you to compile two separate icons to use as a single icon for folders, disks etc. And Viou is better? I imagine the reviewers stating this can't see beyond the fact that Viou is free and this costs some bucks. I have tried Viou and it was a very hit-or-miss affair as to whether things would combine correctly. Or not. You get what you pay for, or not as the case may be. Download the app and try it for yourself. Don't listen to me and certainly don't listen to the overly-negative reviews here⦠(Version 1.9.5)

JIMW In the interest of all of those posting feature requests for this product and for potential new users who wish to make an informed purchase decision, I invite you to also review the freeware application, Viou. This outstanding application, which is both in stand-alone and contextual form is what I use for this purpose and does many of the same things this Folder Icon X does and includes many of the requests I see listed here. Additionally you can''t beat the cost. My only minor complaint about it is that some of the documentation for it could be a little more explicit for the new user. I suggest you try it out to see if it meets your folder icon needs when considering this type of product. (Version 1.8.8)

MACLECTIC I got this for under $10, way back when and it was a steal! The author has added new features almost every month without asking for more money. - This is a great quick'n'dirty way of making icons by putting together icon pictures and masks. - Easiest way to put logos on on a variety of folders from a template list. - Easy to resize icon elements. - Supports drag-n-drop, copy-paste and all standard Mac UI features that I can tell. - More mini-features than I could ever use. - Overall clean and generally intuitive UI. Someone might complain about the UI being a bit complicated, but there are so many things this app can do, it would be hard to make it much more intuitive. A definite MUST for OS X icon fiddlers.
