HGM-NY Like others, I find this version absolutely appalling. The potential feature set is great. The implementation is awful; I've lost confidence in the developers to get it right. There's just too much that's so buggy that the integrity of the coding is seriously in doubt. Takes many minutes to load, if it loads, which it doesn't about half the time. Everything is insanely slow. It's the buggiest program I've used in a long time. They call this a "release" product. It's not even early beta. And considering how late it is already compared to the promises, and how bad it is, I have NO confidence in it ever working right. I'm hoping for BusyCal to add a few critical features, then that will be the #1 calendar product for the Mac. (Version 10.0)

APEARSON I recently "upgraded" to Now X (after having used NUTD and Contact for many years). Like many others, I find this new version appalling. After many frustrations on Day 1, this is what happened on my second day with Now X: My iMac had been asleep overnight. On the morning of Day 2, I woke it up and went to the Now X window which was in week view (normal). I went to properties and reduced the size of the banner font to 16pt. I then went to page set-up to check orientation and scale. I then hit print. The window went blank. The print pane opened and I hit preview. The pane disappeared and the window stayed blank for several seconds. Then the month view (normal) reappeared! I tried to print the week view again several times -- with and without page set-up, with and without preview -- the same thing happened every time, as above. So I went to the month view and tried to print: no response at all (month view just stared back at me). I quit Now X and reopened it, repeated the print exercises and got the same results, i.e., none. So, I restarted the computer and opened Now X. I got the starting Now X services pane which stayed whirring away for two minutes or so. Finally the month view (normal) opened. I tried to print direct from that window (i.e., I took no action after the software opened). It showed me the loading page window (though I noted that it was loading 12 pages in spite of my having changed that parameter to 1 the day before). I selected print page 1 to 1 and hit preview. Preview came up OK. I hit print and the page printed. I now went to the properties pane in month view and reduced the banner font to 16pt and the day cell font to 6% and hit print. Once again, the printing routine went according to Hoyle and I got a single page, with the banner font properly reduced. So I thought I was home free...but no... This time I went to week view (normal) and changed the properties as follows: banner font to 16pt, day cell font to 6% and event font to 10pt. Then I tried to print. The window went blank and the print pane opened. I hit preview, whereupon the big rotating time icon flashed momentarily, then nothing -- no preview, blank window. Shortly the month view (normal) reappeared. I tried to print again in month view, the small coloured rotating beach ball twirled for a moment then nothing, no reaction at all. So I quit Now X and reopened it. It came up in month view (normal). I tried immediately to print -- no response whatever, the month view stared back at me. So I selected week view (normal) and the big rotating time icon flashed briefly, then the week view appeared. I hit print, the window went blank, then the print pane appeared, I selected page 1 to 1, and hit print. The big rotating time icon flashed briefly, then nothing, just the blank screen. Shortly afterward the month view appeared. When the month view appeared, I hit print and absolutely nothing happened -- the month view stared back at me. And that's where we stand as of now. Then I was unable to print my calendar in any view at all. Perhaps this is simply a bug. However, I have many other complaints, as follows. Why do the days now run from left to right in the week view (they ran from top to bottom in Now 5)? Why is there no information in the manual on printing? Why do changes to properties that show on the screen not show up in the printed version (e.g., when I try to cram more events onto the screen by reducing the font size in the properties panes, those events are still printed large and bold and therefore cropped)? Why does the software prepare 12 weeks/months for printing when I only want to print the week/month I'm looking at on the screen? Why am I not given any options about how the print-out looks, e.g., add the date and time of the print-out, or add the name of the person whose calendar it is, or describe how much of the total calendar is being printed? Why do I have no control over the colour or size of the printed page heading (which takes up a lot of space that could be used in the rest of the page for events)? All of these features were available in every version of NUTD I ever purchased before. In short, why have Now offered for sale a less than half-baked piece of work? Now should be paying me for the time I've spent finding out that I should have stuck with version 5 -- and at my hourly rates they'd already be owing me many times the cost of the "upgrade" to X. Naturally, I have indeed gone back to version 5 and have emailed Now to ask for my money back. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that I have received no acknowledgment or other response from Now to that request (which I have sent twice already -- on October 25 and November 1). DENNYMOREJ P.S. The "3" star review is not a reflection of the new Now X 10.0 software. So check the dates if you really want to get an accurate feel for the software offered, these reviews go back years way before this horrific mess was released. (Version 10.0)

DENNYMOREJ This is one of those times when I could just kick myself for not believing the reviews and instead put stock Now Software's hype and some glossy photo. The upgrade is seriously a joke. I mean is actually worse than before. I feel completely clowned. Like other reviewers I have been a long time user. First to get it up and running is a bizarre easter egg hunt, a huge waste of time. Then the reveal. There is no logic in the way information is presented. Besides ugly we are treated to ridiculous proportions of dead space. Looks nothing like the pictures, and believe me the interface with other apple software is useless if you never used it before. I mean how many address books do I need? It is nice to not have to open "contact" and "up to date" to access supposedly integrated data, but not worth the 50 dollar upgrade. Don't do it. You will be pissed at Now Software for ripping you off. The only favor they did me is load apple's "Address Book" with my info. I will never let Now Software rip me off again. (Version 10.0)

GSKIBUM I've been using NUDC for about 12 years. After the long wait for NowX, I must say that my disappointment is extreme. As others have said - too little, too late. I would have stayed with NUDC, but they abandoned syncing with Address Book in Leopard. I can't wait to get rid of this and move on to something else. Possibly SOHO 8. The hard part is going to be fixing the catastrophe NowX has made out of my calendar. (Version 10.0)

MACUSER10 NOWX seems to be unique. The new MAC release is very buggy but if it worked right, it would be great because there's nothing else quite like it. I've just tried some of the other programs recommended in other comments but my priority is a pro-level great contact manager and a great calendar. Sharing is a secondary consideration! The other programs seem to be weak in basic contact management. NOWX has wonderful sorting capabilities but right now it is slower that previous versions. It is disturbing, however that database portability from one computer to the next seems to be a major problem now. What do you do if you have a crash? Every pro needs a quick backup plan. I wish them good luck. HURRY UP and make it better. Customers would even pay more if the product was fully functional. (Version 10.0)

TREKKER Painful-to-use program. Nothing like it's forerunner, Now-Up-To-Date and Now Contact which was developed and written in the early 90's by great programmers (Dave Riggle http://www.busymac.com/about.html) who are long gone -- now they produce BusyCal, which is what Now-Up-To-Date used to be and NowX isn't. I used the former Now programs (from the original developers) since the early-90's and loved them. This version is a giant leap backwards in almost every way. Very unintuitive -- especially compared to NUD/C. Convoluted interface with hard-to-find buttons/controls for what are common everyday tasks, making it frustrating to use. Unreliable and buggy syncing. Far fewer features and less ease-of-use than NUD/C, which was written in the 90's for goodness sake! Basic drag and drop functionality glaringly missing from some places it's needed most. I could go on and on... And did I mention it's been delivered, half-baked, almost three YEARS after it was promised to be released and money was collected from customers and has been held for all these years for the "upgrade"?!?! Questionable planning skills and questionable business practices, to say the least. Way too little, too late. Contactizer Pro, Daylite, and (can you believe it?!?!) SOHO Organizer are way better, IMO. BusyCal is also looking pretty good! Do yourself a favor and check them out before even considering NowX. (Version 10.0)

SARASWATI I, too, am very disappointed with Now X, which I had paid for two years ago. The Quick Day and Quick Contact features are useless, as one cannot create new calendar events or new contacts through these handy menubar features as one could in Now Up-to-Date & Contact. There are many other issues with Now X that have forced me to return to the excellent NUDC, with which am happy, except for the fact that I could never network the calendar with a laptop. BusyCal seems it might be just the solution, and I see that it has received good reviews both on MacUpdate and also on Version Tracker. However, the website has been down for two days now, so I'm wondering if this company has already gone belly up! (Version 10.0)

MONTY LEE I used several versions of the beta and now the final release. This version does NOT have the server (with no definite date for the server release) so you cannot share the calendar. In fact, the new format precludes readily transferring the data file to another computer (like you could with NUD 5.x). First, the file is in the Application Support folder and does not support a different location (so you can't use Drobbox). Second, the database is not truly updated until you quit Now Services (Option-Quit), meaning that you can really hose your database (I did) if you move the file. Next, the import from NUD 5.x is OK, but fails to transfer many of the graphics, including internal graphics like New Moon, Full Moon, etc. WARNING: I found that "automatic" feature during installation and the initial run not reliable. If you do not clear iCal, you can get tons of duplicates (something pointed out many times during the beta cycle). I don't believe this was ever fixed reliably. Duplicates are a real big problem, especially as NowX sync's with iCal. For some reason once it sync's, it sees the iCal event as new and copies it to NowX. I'm on my 3rd try to get a working, reliable interface between NowX and iCal. Frequent "mini-crashes" that bring up an alert to notify NowX, but does not seem to crash the program. Most of these occurred with manipulating graphics. No way to copy and event and paste it on another date. I could go on but after 3 years of waiting, this really isn't that great. I'm now downloading Daylite and Conactizer Pro to see if there is a better program out there--especially one that can work with other computers. (Version 10.0)

MIKE Very slow on PowerBook G4 running 10.5.8. Apparently wont import all data from previous version. Very disappointed. Paid for upgrade almost 2 1/2 years ago, and then get an unworkable product, not satisfactory. I did call and have received a promise to refund my money. Assuming that happens, it does resolve the issue. I have for many years used and will continue using the 5.3.2 version since it functions OK. Guess Ill need to find something else for the future. ISLANDMIKE There is a public beta now and the application is called NowX (code named NightHawk). You can sign up and try it at http://betareg.nowsoftware.com/ I used to really like Now Up To Date, and like many others have been frustrated at the length of time it has taken for the developers to upgrade. I have yet to find anything quite like it however -- any one else find something that is currently available that is similar? But in case you aren't checking the Now Up To Date website and do happen to check here on MacUpDate, there you go if you want to check out the "new" version. (Version 5.3.2)

ACCOUNTCLOSED If you aim to wait for this developer to deliver a release of "Nighthawk" (now nearly a YEAR past the announced beta release date), think twice. It is a supreme irony that this company took the name "NOW Software." NUDC was YEARS trying to come right for OS X, and never did. To this day, the last release (5.3.2) remains quirky, and the last Leopard update available on the developer's site is dated 07 APRIL, with no ETA info on Nighthawknot that we could believe any timetable they offered, they've moved it back so many times. After tearing my hair out over bugs that survived release after release and getting no response from the company to repeat emails, or a blithe "we're working on it," I figured they had a covert plan to run the company into the ground for the write-off, since nothing else explains such striding and relentless irresponsibility to customers. The sad bit is that NUDC in its day (pre-OS X) was far and away the best program of its kind for Mac. The much touted "Nighthawk," if it ever arrives, probably will live up to the rotten reputation this company has worked hard to earn. (Version 5.3.2)

DONMONTALVO I had high hopes for Nighthawk. But I hung it up months ago. This is vaporware. Even if they do release this, based on NUDC track record, I'll stick to Apple's built in solution. At least we never have to worry about when it'll come out or when bugs will be fixed, and it's free with OSX. I'll be happy to look at Nighthawk when it comes out, but only for kicks - I would never recommend it to any of my clients. Don Montalvo, NYC (Version 5.3.2)

ROBERT COOGAN Very nice, but it badly needs integrated an e-mail client to be truly useful. I use Entourage 2008 which meets this need, but handles IMAP badly - so I really need a replacement. NUTDC is a great app, but without that e-mail functionality I would be reduced to jumping back and forth between NUTDC and Apple Mail. More trouble than it's worth. Hope the devs are incorporating this into nighthawk, though I did not see this mentioned on the website. (Version 5.3.2)

SBDAIGO I have been using Now for a long time, since v3. I read the comments others write and I wonder sometimes if we are using the same application. I know that Now has had its struggles with moving to OS X, but applications that relied so heavily on the things Apple changed (menu bar, daemons, etc) have made it really really hard on a few applications that I have depended on. And just when they get a work around .... Apple changes it again - just ask Unsanity and even Chronos with their PIM for Mac. For a PIM, this is the most robust one out there. Finished .... No, moving in the right direction ... Yes. The way it does categories for sharing, there is none out there like it, it really is great. Also, my alarms are right on since v5.1, so I dont know what the other comments mean. I hope this helps someone. (Version 5.3)

FYESKIP We've used NUD for many years, possibly since before 4.0 (my memory's not so good anymore). We don't use the Contact portion, so I've nothing to add or subtract there. For the most part it works great, allowing us to keep track of our business obligations, both sales and meetings. We have run into a problem, and perhaps someone has a solution: Appointments that are on the calendar can too easily be altered or deleted by mistake by someone viewing that data. A mistakenly hit key or space bar can completely change the details of an appointment, and that doesn't begin to address the errant swipe of a mouse that moves an appointment, etc., from one date to another. There isn't any way to lock appointments permanently, or have a dialogue box come up that questions an edit, intentional or otherwise. Assigning owners and passwords only means that others need to supply a password *once* and they have the right to edit forever. I'm shocked this hasn't been addressed; why have a database that's meant to be shared and not have a way of protecting the data I've input? Other than this it works great. (Version 5.2)

JOEBLOWJAPAN Now Up-to-Date used to be a great product, but that has changed, and I cannot recommend it at all simply because it doesn't work properly and Now Software is deceptive about the program's problems. I used NUTD for OS9 for years. Menu bar reminders were a key element in my home office. I bought Now Up-to-Date 5.02 in July 2005. Guess what? No menu bar reminders, though the preferences had that option, and they advertised it. To quote Matthew in their support department, "...Menu bar alerts are not possible in Now Up-to-Date right now. I am embarrassed to point out that they were not removed from the options in preferences." And there was absolutely no mention of this on their support website. Why did they hide this? So I switched to dialog box alerts. Totally unreliable. There was mention of this problem, however: Lots of suggestions on how to (spend a lot of time and) delete, rebuild, archive, save, reinstall, etc. All of that, plus clean system installs and more, and still I had unreliable "reminders" which were useless. To quote Matthew again: "Reminders for repeating events are not very reliable in our current release of Now Up-to-Date & Contact. We have done some serious work in 5.0.3 and hope to see them improve. Version 5.0.3 is due out in a matter of weeks." So I waited, then reinstalled, deleted, rebuilt, archived.... Again, no luck. I should not have waited. After all my wasted time trying through several updates to make NUTD work I had to give up and use iCal to get reliable reminders. But Now Software has a 30-day return policy, so no refund for me. Instead of trying to make their product work I should have chucked it in at the start. And there is still no fix on their support website. They cannot even find my email to them. Pathetic. LACWBO Now Up-to-Date has had one hugh flaw in in since the OS X version has come out. You cannot rely on the alarms. I have a recurring daily alarm which I use to remind me to take medication. It alarmed properly for five days and then just quit. It still shows on the calendar as a "to do" but will not provide an alarm. I have tried the save as and made sure that the primary (my only Now file) still is checked, it is. But no luck on the daily alarm. In the past I have just started over with a new alarm and it too works for a few days. And to think I wasted my money again on this new version! Never again! I have tried various "fixes" is recommended by the developer, they too work for a few days and then fail. I would recommend that you flush this app until the developer can figure out how to make it work properly. I am running Tiger, the latest release. (Version 5.1.1)

FRANKP The recent update is a significant step backwards in the ability to print envelopes. They're changed completely the envelope format, so all of the templates we've customized no longer work and have to be re-created. Worse, the new envelope names have no relation to the envelope size, so you have to guess which template is closest to the one you want and customize it. The format change prevents importing of previous templates. Worse yet, it no longer allows center-feeding. We ended up wasting a dozen envelopes before we figured out how to, marginally, print it through a laser printer that requires center-feeding. I wouldn't upgrade to this version. The downsides are worse than any marginal improvement in functionality. (Version 5.1)

GPSTEIN1 This is my 3rd version of NUD/C. It just keeps getting better. I'm sure I can do everything I need with this program. However, I also feel its a little overpriced. But, since I'm upgrading, its not that bad. And that you should be able to buy a 2nd. copy/license at a big discount. If i purchased a desktop for my office, I'd have to export to the Apple apps. An inconvience at best. Overall I highly recommend Now Contact/Up to Date. (Version 5.1)

LACWBO This is the worst PIM I have ever tried. Back when I had OS8, it worked great. Now: 1. No alarm dialog appears 2. When you click on the to do or other items on the menu bar, it open Now Up-to-Date but you still have to select the To Do option. Why not just open Now Up-to-Date. it's the same thing. I am running Tiger 10.4.3, but had the same problems under Panther. Since TurboTax also has problems under Tiger, I am convinced the Intuit programmers need to brush up on their Mac skills. I'm going back to ical, not the best; but I can rely on receiving alarms. Not so with this version of Now Up-to Date! (Version 5.1)

SBDAIGO Hey, I think this app is great. I can understand the reading of different servers would be a plus - but that is not what this app is designed to do (maybe in the future). It is funny how people flame stuff so fast. MS Entourage has taken years to read GAL - and they wrote the server software and had the code - and it still doesnt work right, what do they say the problem is ... Apple and OS X. They too promise sync services, again the problem .. Of course - they say Apple. Is it BAD software, no - it just seems that it has taken all software companies longer to get things working. I also know that there is a lot of talk about New Chronos SOHO organizer, people telling Now that they better get things moving or else - but there again, the web site says quote, Chronos To Soon Release SOHO Organizer and SOHO Note .... The post ... June 15, 2005! I dont know about you but that is not soon, especially in the software industry. It just seems too easy to criticize. Now 5.1 is a HUGE step in the right direction. For our company it is an invaluable piece of software. I believe that it will get better and better. By the way, NO, I dont work for now, but I did leave the app for awhile, but in the end, there is nothing like it - IMHO - I just believe in it and a few other companies I think are doing a great job for me.

JLG Maybe the GUI is great. Maybe the calendar-sharing features are great within the tiny enclave of NUDC users cloistered in various organizations. But when a groupware product can't do basic things like publishing iCalendar or Free/Busy files and querying LDAP servers for contact information (c'mon, even Microsoft's products can do that!), it's next to worthless in my book. Why even have the groupware features? The server daemons are nothing but flaky, hog the CPU, collapse under load. My advice? Stick with free/open source alternatives that are standards-based and won't leave you stranded on a calendaring island. (Version 5.0.4)

TIM GUMMER yes we have been waiting. Version 5 has not a single improvement for the SOHO users. The aesthetic makeover imposes a massive speed handicap - and its much much harder to make sense of visually. To have to pay for this downgrade, just so we can stick with this piece of crap when we install Tiger is basically stickin the finger to their client base. I'd rather not have to go shopping for a new PIM/CRM solution right now, but it seems that that is what I will have to do. (Version 5.0.4)

ANONYMOUS a colossal disappointment after years of waiting for "Now" (ironic) to bring this PIM up to speed. QuickDay, incredibly, remains seriously buggy, with out-of-time-sequence listing of items, and some items, e.g., to-do's, not even recognizeda fatal flaw that's haunted this app for years. despite what must be thousands of email requests for a fix, Now continues to charge loyal customers to be perpetual beta testers. A real indictment of the company's leadership, QC, and commitment to R&D. After many years as an extraordinarily patient and loyal N UDC user, I'm looking elsewhere. (Version 5.0.4)

WINCO Check out Daylite. It's the king of PIM/CRM for the Mac these days. I switched to Daylite from NUTD/NC and I have'nt looked back since. I was an experienced user of NUTD/NC for many years. But they have fallen behind times with development and consequently, functionality. This should now be a CRM as well as a PIM. It's buggy, slow and has not improved on the previous versions. Daylite is worth the effort to set up and learn. You will not need to hope for Goldmine or ACT for the Mac any more. (Version 5.0.3)

ANONYMOUS I would take a look at Daylite --- the only real pro app (with sales management and tracking tools) --- PIMS are a dime a dozen adn Out-Of-Date just simply falls short of delivering any real cabailities for an inividual in sales and marketing. PURE RUBBISH Once the king of PIMs now the Frankenstein of PIMs as it has accomplished the following: GUI: What GUI? Even 101 design students can make a better GUI. Heck my granddaughter can scribble a better GUI. And this is supposed to be a professional PIM app? No way! Menubar QuickDay and QuickContact Components: Do you like not being access either these or everything to the right of them on the menubar because they are written so poorly that you can't? The software coders have never understood how to make them work properly for eons and it shows. This is or was the most useful aspect of NUDC--but only if and when it works. ZIP+4: Not any longer, they removed this feature, although it had ceased working eons ago and would only lead you to a page where it said you couldn't go there. Basically, it has turned into garbage. It bloatware with zero substance; poor interconnection within its own components; unrealistically priced; adds more work when it should reduce your work; awkward and ugly; the epitome of devolution from whence it started. I couldn't state enough bad about NUDC if I wanted to, because then I would be writing a thesis on it! I simply converted all my contacts to Apple Address Book, and deleted this POS until I can find a professional PIM. I was with NUDC for years, but now they couldn't me a free copy if they tried. They have lost me forever as a client. (Version 5.0.2)

GARY Downloaded version 5.0.1 two weeks ago, and testing it in a networked computing environment (law firm)... Sorry for my un-enthusiasm there. I am so frustrated already with crashes and the spinning beach ball of death just to do simple tasks (such as clicking on a pull-down menu!!). Got 1.5 Gigs of RAM on a fast machine, so the problem's not my hardware. Deleting an appointment can take forever; staying current with an iCalendar can nearly freeze you out of the program; just try moving a to-do item from one day to the next in less than 9 seconds... argh. I had such high hopes, but this stinks. (Version 5.0.2)

ANONYMOUS I run a law firm, too. Macs do so much so well. Manage information in an office environment is not one of them. There is not a single applications (or combination of applications) that can do this basic function on a Mac. We have tried NUDC, Chronos' Group Organizer, and even iCal and Address Book. Don't you think you should be able to use the contact information in NUDC to prepare routine multipage pleadings, like Discovery Requests? Evidently Now Software doesn't because multiple pages were not supported in 4x and I guess they're not supported in 5x, either. Of all the recurring headaches I have with computers, simply managing information is the worst. Clients, schedules, document preparation... come on. What does it take to get a simple need met in MacWorld? My conclusion is that Apple does not see their products in the office place. Let's have some more high-end film production software before we get a complete solution to day-to-day business needs, shall we? (Version 5.0.2)

BRENT As a very long-time user of NUDC I was miffed when the purchase of my new Canon Pixma i5000 caused NUDC to lose all printing ability. Thus I looked forward to this "major rewrite" of 5.0.1. Well folks hold onto your hard earned money. Contact crashes at the click of the print button if you own a pixma printer. I'm looking at Chronos software's personal organizer cause it is being updated and by gosh it can print. NUDC's pointing the finger at Canon and Apple was a ploy now that 5.0.1 is out and Up to Date prints fine. Contact is only being kept so I can export my data base of information. (Version 5.0.1)

ANONYMOUS After 15 minutes with customer service, I was able to get a serial number. Problem solved! This is a re-write? The group schedule is nice. iCalendar, customizable toolbar, and vCards are a nice touch as well. But my wish list still remains unfulfilled. I was hoping for just a couple things: Wish list item #1: e-mail client so that my contacts will have everything linked (e-mail, to-do's, phone calls, letters, faxes, etc.). OD4Contact has a clunky symbiotic relationship with Apple Mail. Wish list item #2: I was also hoping for a Project Center that will compete with Entourage. Using categories and sets is kinda clunky and really needs a user interface make-over. Now Software will have to watch out. The competition is starting to heat up. OD4Contact is a great contact program but is held back by poor calendar features. DayLite just feels too complicated but has alot of power hiding if you're willing to figure it out. Chronos SOHO Personal Organizer is rumored to be released later this year. With all this competition, Now Software will hopefully implement value-added features like the Project Center and E-Mail client. (Version 5.0.1)

I WILL NOT sign and fax you this agreement and WILL think of switching to another software after many years of using NUD&C. IAMDORIAN Have to agree here with the comments of so many others, and add my 2 cents. There are MANY Mac developers these days, and many products. Some developers have come up with clever solutions, good apps, then suddenly just dropped development. The end user is left with virtually useless software. I have held off purchasing/updating this application - which did answer several of my needs in a PIM - because there has been so little development. I don't need to throw good money after bad. I don't think most people expect updates every week, and can recognize an update-a-week (MacUpdate/VrsnTrckr) sales strategy when they see it, but come on. I've run the v4.5.3 demo on both the most currrent versions of Jaguar and Panther and had crashes. If you guys want Mac-money, get this product back into REAL R&D and update it. You'll have my bucks. DR. RICK BRINKMAN I have used Now Up to Date and Contact since it was 1.0. My employees span many different geographic areas aside from our local network. I have found this program to be indispensible. The server is easy to set up and the program is very straight forward. To be able to share contacts and calendar items so effortlessly among a workgroup (and at no extra charge) is amazing. We have had some glitches here and there but nothing that would make me want something else. What program have you ever had that doesn't occasional glitches? The last Word crashes on drag and drop if the path to the file is greater than 128 characters. The latest Entourage can't correctly sort by "this month" even though that is a custom view provided. In fact, my latest email to the developer re: the problem has not even been answered and that was two weeks ago. Advice: flush this program until the developer figures out how to make it work properly under OS 10.3.5. iCal and Entourage work just fine. (Version 4.5.3)

It has been neglected over the years but it now appears the current developer is preparing to release a brand new, re-engineered version specifically optimised to run on OS X for the future. The current version 4.5.3 is still slightly buggy. I've tried Daylite 1.6.1 and this is slow and buggy too. It has promise though and the NUTD developer should take notice. RICHARD VERCH Having had this software in an environment of 20 people since After Hours owned it, I can agree it is the most unreliable software we have ever used. The only reason we have kept it is that we invested so much time adding 12,000 contacts and related information, that moving this from a flat file database to a real multi-table relational database would be a nightmare. Too bad someone can't make enough money to buy this and really fix the software-the interface is nice. But, I couldn't pay a cent for the current code; and certaily the paid base must me too little now to support correct development. Well, after another hard crash and mucking up all of our events (yes we have backups) and having so many synch problems with its silly implementation of synching--We will spend the money to move from this buggy software. Bye Bye NOW! (Version 4.5.3)

RANDY MURRAY Here's a few notes on our upcoming releases and development plans: We are planning on shipping daemonized versions of our calendar and contact servers in a release later this year. This release will also include several user requested features - we'll share more information as we get closer to release on both our web site and in our product newsletters. We are also far into a major effort to COMPLETELY rewrite Now Up-to-Date & Contact. This is a very exciting project and will be the platform to dramatically improve and expand the product. This will also allow us to capitalize on new Apple technologies that will be a part of Tiger and future OS updates. This is a big project, but we are also making sure to support our existing users with maintenance releases like this week's version 4.5.3. Now Up-to-Date & Contact has our full attention - it's the core of our business and the only thing we do. We appreciate feedback and urge our customers to send suggestions to suggestions@nowsoftware.com or use our online FAQ and support system at http://nowsoftware.com/support/. You can also sign up for our newsletter to receive the latest product information at http://poweronsoftware.com/newsletter/signup.asp. Now Software (Version 4.5.3)

We are obviously still all waiting for the really usefull updates of the products that remain the best on the market. Especially isyncing easily with smart phones would be a great step forward and also some intelligent Spotlight integration was really hoped for in NUDC 5.1.0 Another issue that shopuld be considered is this name that can be written in so many ways: Now, Now Contact(s), Now up-to-date, Now Up to Date, NUDC etc --- that it makes it virtually impossible to search for related topics in search engines. Until hopefully soon I jump onto new opportunities and promises (such as very recently from SOHO) but they are so totally deceiving, that I keep waiting for Now completing its software into a really Tiger integrated version 5.x .... before OSX steps up again.

ANONYMOUS agenda for sure, and with a history that goes back 10 years, speaking strictly for myself and my experience. just for beginners, this software has had an upgrade path that would confound the devil. stability? well, sometimes. and we are speaking of a product that should at least be stable given that it has been in development since who knows when, say 1994 or so? whatever. garbage. waste of time. when should i delete this mess? NOW, so as to keep Up-To-Date! (Version 4.5.2)

ME Why would I have an agenda against a software company? How you can think that is mre rational than the fact that a lot of people have serious, unresolved issues w/ this software is a bit perplexing. I, for one, have sworn off this program until a new developer assumes it or Now overhauls it completely. It is slow, it crashes way too frequently, and it inevitably corrupts itself. I see no reason to pursue software that at this developed version is so unstable and is so poorly supported. That it works for you is great and you got your money's worth, but don't kid yourself for a second to assume that it's a dependable program for everyone. Where there's smoke, there's fire... and there's a lot of smoke around this program! (Version 4.5.3)

MARK GUERTIN I wouldn't reccomend Now up to Date for _anyone_ _anywhere_. If you speak of bugs then Now up to date is absolutely full of them as well! The OSX calendar publishing has a 'known' memory leak that used up 80G of swap space on my server. Tech support replied by saying "Don't use that option on OSX server as it's a known problem. (which is funny as it's not published anywhere on their public pages). Their reccomendation? Buy a windows server, and then purchase their windows version and run that as a server. I'm still publishing our last remaining NUTD stuff from an OS9 box (that freezes at least 3 times weekly requiring a manual reboot). This is also a 'known issue' according to their tech support department, and they gave me the same reccomendation, to not use realtime publishing and/or to buy a windows box and the windows version of the software. The last option they gave me was to set it to export calendars at a presecribed time, which also didn't work. It output incomplete calendars (some didn't get output at all), and didn't even show a problem in any logfile anywhere. Tech support had no solution for this either aside from using the windows version to serve with and/or to "reduce the database size". My databse was 115k large at that point in time (I've got word files that are bigger!). We own 35 licenses for NUTD, and it was the worst investment we have ever made. They are extremely unresponsive to tech support inquiries, and their software is very old in the tooth and extremely buggy. I have users here that completely lose their NUTD calendars weekly. Lastly, this software integrates with virtually _nothing_ out there today and does not export standard formats. To get any data out you have to jump through some very large and treacherous hoops, use an external device (like a palm pilot), and it's a very labor intensive deal. (Version 4.5.2)

GEO1246 What happened to this app? Can anyone come up with a compelling reason to use this software? Will they ever bring it up to speed with iCal and Address Book? Will it ever have system-wide integration? Will it ever look better than it did in, like, 1998? I used to *love* this program, but I'm not sure what the point of it is now. (Version 4.5.2)

ANONYMOUS I agree with you completely. But it doesn't make sense to be loyal to computer software. The alternatives are just better. My opinion, anyway. (Version 4.5.3)

ANONYMOUS This update is complete and utter crap. Besides the fact that immediately after having updated the server appson our server I had to rebuild our contact database, (it somehow got corrupted which has NEVER happened before) a procedure that is more painful and time consuming than walking 6 miles over hot coals and broken glass, the server apps totally hog CPU cycles to the point that connecting to our server is impossible! I just checked our server's Process Viewer and saw that the Contact Server was using 99.98% of the CPU! It's a stupid contact database!!! What the hell is it doing? We only have 1400 contacts!!! The Event Server wasnt taking up much because it had already crashed just like it does 20 time a day! I have sent 4 messages to Power On about this and have yet to get a reply. When I do it's usually a link to an out of date faq hidden on their website that has nothing to do with the problem I'm experiencing. We are ditching these guys and finding something else, even if I have to write my own in FileMaker Pro it would be less painful than this dealing with this hack program suite! Dont even THINK about buying this junk until they figure themselves out. It seems that every update they come out with is actually a de-grade. I hope this save somebody a mountain of aggravation. ANONYMOUS Try Daylite 1.5.7. I use NUTD / NC and I'm getting sick of flakey software. This should be bulletproof by now. Shame 'cos it used to be the best contact manager for the Mac until Daylite which I'm trialing. GIve it a go. (Version 4.5.2)

ANONYMOUS hehe, you don't use it for much do you ;) Try using the 'public event' server portion of it sometime and you'll see bugs. P.S. Don't try it on OSX, it used 80G of swap and took my main server down ... support said "it's a known issue, don't use it on OSX" They took their bug reporting/tracking software offline since that time, and none of the 11 MAJOR bugs I had opened were resolved. ANONYMOUS These guys really need to get the major bugs worked out of their software before selling it. Every update they put out seems to be a beta, with multiple issues. This isn't all that complicated a program yet, keeping the Calendar server running for more than a day is very difficult. The server used to just crash and need restarting but since the update, it now stays running, but unresponsive. Oh great! The server keeps running requiring a force-quit and doesn't release its port, requiring you to wait until the OS finally times out and shuts the port (takes hours). All the while the server won't bind to the port if it restarted. There are so many other issues but the server crashes make the product unusable if you have a good number of users running both Mac and PC. Not recommended until they clean it up. Pretty amateur software if you ask me. (Version 4.5.1)

ANONYMOUS I had the same problem. I tossed the pref file, turned the QuickMenu back on and it worked. Every once in a while I still need to toggle it off then on again, but it does work...well sort of. (Version 4.5.2)

ANONYMOUS smells like a poweron developer to me. Funny how every 'good' review posted is anonymous. This software was great in '95, but sadly died sometime between now and then. (Version 4.5.2)

DOESN'T WORK IN PANTHER I truly need a Panther comparable version as I can no longer access the main program of Contact. I can do so only through the Menu Bar drop-down and even then it crashes at times. I sure wish I had exported my contacts BEFORE upgrading to Panther. When they do get compatibility I'll be exporting all my contacts into the Apple Address Book for safe keeping. I am also leery of how little has been done on these two programs. (Version 4.2.6)

SETH Best contact/calendar program for the mac. However, poor Palm support, several bugs still remain over multiple updates (ie, keywords cause crashing, date searches very rudimentary, prone to crash) (Version 4.2.6)

MARK No support for Address Book...I can't believe it! They're probably waiting to introduce this feature in the next version...and charge for a Major Uprade. Very poor idea! (Version 4.2.5)
