ICONZ113  Transmission is a torrent client, limewire is a p2p client. I usually use a p2p client for single songs, and transmission for albums. I usually cant find the single song I want on torrent sites but I can usually find the whole album. I figure just get the songs I want so not to clutter my itunes with a bunch of stuff I don't listen to

26CAB40  Sadly, development of this app is moot.

The network it serves has shrunk as have the number of users.

Spammers and ner'do wells have created virus/trojan ridden versions of almost any alphanumeric description you can think of.

It has been utterly superseded by bittorrent and more recently apps based on darknets.

JON555  This app hasn't changed in YEARS. It's literally stayed the same and looks like it's straight from 2001. I mean it was great back in its day, but that day is LONG gone. And the fact that they have the nerve to charge for a "premium" version is just insane. There are so many fake spoof files on Limewire that it's impossible to use even for legitimate reasons.

With so many better, free alternatives out there why would anyone bother with this?

GLW  I don't know if it is just me, but every time I try to install this, all I get is a zero-K "Classic Application" which, of course, does nothing.

And there is so much "spoof file" garbage on the Gnutella network these days that it is almost impossible to find anything of value any more. So I'm finding LimeWire to be of less and less value.

DOUGSTER  Hi there,

Before installing this new version of LimeWire did you delete everything associated with the previous version? Usually the 'Classic' error appears when a new version of LW detects an older version (or remnants of it) on a computer.

GLW  Dougster,

YES, that was the solution!! Thanks for that hint.

I still think that's a funny way for an installer to work, though.... Usually they will just add the new version, or possibly do an automatic replacement of the old.

DOUGSTER  Hi GLW,

Glad that worked for you! I agree.......it is unusual in the way LimeWire acts. Like you, I'd expect LW to replace the previous version of its software with the new installation.

MIROSLAVH  Hi all,

I'm on OSX 10.5.7

Like indicated here, I trashed all associated file, but unsuccessfuly: I obtain the right icons (coloured), but LimeWare don't starts...

I never seen this: when You update a software, usually, all process is automatic.. Here I have to use 3 different softs to find all prefs, and other possible .plist and packages, for nothing...

If I work with oldest version, a disturbing message flashes to force me to an update (if possible a payable upgrade!!!!)

Definitely I forget this sh:t and seek about another, more intelligent and less brutal product!!! Maybe I could move to the paid version, but with this method, never!

ALBABE  More of the developers who have completely abandoned the vast majority of teh Apple market.

It's a real drag that there are so many clients that are only available for the Intel chip. I read somewhere a year ago that Intel Mac were barely 15% of the Apples being used regularly... so why would a client LimeWire just produce for that market. Seems oddly elitist to me.

MARK LEWIS  Limewire 5 DEMANDS Java 1.6 and, unless you have a 64 bit capable Mac, YOU AIN'T GOT IT AND YOU CAN'T (at this time) GET IT! I have a MBP. NO GO. If you download and install this version which the DEVELOPER KNOWS will not work on your machine, it will REPLACE the working version and then require that you manually STRIP the new and non-working version off your machine by hand, a piece at a time! This seriously BLOWS. Lamewire.

unless, of course, you're saying that people who own macs with 32-bit processors (core solos and core duos) should "update their system requirements" and figure out how to upgrade their processors just to run limewire 5.

IDESIGN74  Unfortunately all I can provide is 1st-hand experience. There are no urls, just a police report stating an investigator used limewire to do "specific" searches of particular files. Of those results that came back, the investigator records the IP address and does an IP search to see what the user is "sharing". Based on the the results, the officer gets an order from a judge to pull records from their ISP and then serves a search warrant to find said files.

DANA SUTTON  The days seem to be over when Limewire was releasing a new version every couple of weeks, seemingly just to maintain constant visibility on sites like MacUpdate. But its developers have retained one nasty habit from the bad old days -- releasing new versions without giving users any information about what's been changed. A lot of us like to have some understanding of what we're getting, otherwise trashing our old version and adopting a new one can be an unnecesary gamble.

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS  Obviously you didn't set the preferences / options for LimeWire correctly.

1) DO NOT set your bandwidth speed higher than what you have. #1 mistake for all LW rookies. Slows down LW to a crawl when you flood your bandwidth.

2) Disable UltraPeer , unless you are on T1 or T3 , don't even think about it. Splits up your bandwidth to speed up slower users.

Done.

Been using it for 3 years without any major slowdowns on a G4 with a measley 128 MB of ram while running multiple-applications. Eg. Photoshop , LimeWire, Safari and Dreamweaver all at one time!

And I found 2 bugs in version 4.1.11 Beta that could trouble for some people without high speed.

Bug 1: Larger files over the 100 MB range that simply disappear after the download is completed, no verify, just deleted. Wierd.

Bug 2: If you type something like "windows xp boot", the search engine goes crazy and adds 100+ peers to download from.

I saw no mention of a fix for either, so I'll post it here and in LimeWire's Beta forum. The search bug seems to be present from 4.10.9 to now.

And I still love program out of all the Gnutella clients, sure some are faster, some with a more OSX GUI, but none find as much as LimeWire can! No reduction in my rating since none of the bugs are serious enough to cause crashes!

JOEL MUELLER  It's Limewire Java, so it doesn't need to be made into a universal binary because it already runs on the Intel based Macs? I'm not certain, but I would assume this. Thanks for helping.

SMPDIGITAL  The Language an application is written on is irrelevant as to whether runs on macintels or not, BTW almost every PPC application runs under Rosetta so that's not the issue.

I've investigated further and Limewire does NOT run under emulation, meaning that Limewire IS in fact a Universal Binary but it has a bug, Finder reports it as a PPC app, maybe is just a missed string.

MOLDARINER  I personally really do like LimeWire.

Fast and acurate searching (if you've trained the spam filter), relaiable downloads, and a really great user interface. That's what LimeWire's all about!

What I don't like about it is that I cannot figure out how to get it to startup as a background process along with my Mac. It shows the splash screen, the loading window and the main window on system startup and I often don't have time for that sort of rubbish! Especially when I'm in a hurry, or using my laptop at school...

And it uses to much memory/CPU! Fare to much!

However I do miss more and better ways for publishers to track the sucsess of their publications and other uploads.

But it's still a really great app. and I couldn't live without it!

DON'T BOGART THAT JOINT  Can someone please inform the developer's of this great program it has a few very annoying bugs!

Bug (1) : Anytime you attempt to DELETE a file or BLOCK a host. It hangs temporarily on the dialog box, sometimes resorting to a force quit or by dragging it around enough times until it accepts a button push.

Bug (2) : Connections don't seem very reliable any longer. Connections randomly drop during downloads. Random drops and random connections lost, upto 200 times during a large download.

Searches: Don't know if this is a bug or a filter issue, but searches produce random results each use. Example, I'll issue a search, it'll find 300 matches, then 800, then 500, then maybe 100 and then back to 800.

Mac OSX 10.3.9 and LimeWire 4.9.37 via DSL 512k

Ps. These issues have been around since 4.9.x started.

I don't want to go back to SLOW BitTorrent or use Poisoned that does little or nothing on a good day.

I have purchased the PRO Version of Limewire ages ago, and always paid for the necessary upgrades, but LimeWire is not as good as it used to be when I first purchased it.

The amount of "things" that you cannot find using Limewire is unbelievable, when you are using applications such as aMule, XNap and similar, without talking about the fact that I personally found things with Cabos, that would simply not turn up in a Limewire search..........

On top of everythig, the point is LICENSING. What is the purpose of P2P then.....we are having a sterile discussion.

I used to love Limewire, for the download speed and a number of other things, but times change, and there are better things on the line.

ANONYMOUS  not because I condone illegal downloads of music and various other material, but this new feature will mean that LimeWire will lose quite a number of customers, including myself.

Who cares about the lates music? The reason why I am using LimeWire and a number of other packages, if to find those pearls which will never be published by the moder music industry, simply because they are of no commercial interest to anyone.

These "pearls" you find online, and simply due to the patience of some individuals who bothered to dig out soem music very dear to ourselves, and bothered to put it online and share it with the others.

Some of this stuff, will not only never be published:

the vinyl version cannot even be found anymore.

This type of music will of course never be licensed (because of no commercial interest or because it is too old), along with videos, photos, drawings and pieces of software.

Did the industry think about this??

Obviously not.

sorry for the rant. Cabos, emule and other people/networks will siply rejoy for the death of LimeWire,

the users will be left with their bottom on the street, as usual.

UH-OH  LimeWire is working on new code that will block non-licensed material.

The new code checks to see if shared material is licensed, if it is not, the LimeWire client will politely inform the user, 'LimeWire can't determine if one or more files have been published under a suitable license. These files will not be shared.'"

From the article: "Approximately 3 to 5 days ago, LimeWire developers began working on two new branches, cc_reverify_interval-branch and cc-publish-branch. The code in the first branch works to verify that every file shared has a license. If this is not the case, the file will not be shared. The second branch is for publishing one's own work without a license. According to the release notes, individuals can attach a Collective Commons license if the work is either their own or have permission to distribute the work ... According to a LimeWire beta tester who informed Slyck of this news, this feature is already complete. Developers are simply waiting for the signal to integrate these branches with the main branch, providing Mark Gorton, CEO of LimeWire, decides to go through with this."

ANONYMOUS  I'm somewhat new to the Mac arena, including its splendor's like MU, and seem to be catching on nicely. However, there's just one thing I'm unable to grasp and I was hoping a Mac user, or rather a experienced MU user, can explain to me. What's the deal with the bitching and moaning aimed at developers updating their products to often? I switched to Mac to have the forefront of technology in my hands, or at least staying as close to the new tech advancements in personal computers. Isn't it our ( Mac users) advantage to have more and more updates in order to stay ahead, so to speak, to the ever-advancing technical world. Why are many people in this Limewire Review bashing the developer for doing just that- developing? If the guy only changes the smallest of detail within the app, then makes this change available to the public FOR FREE, isn't he only doing his job properly and effectively? I give 100 stars for this developer, not the product so much (though it does kicks ass- just rather be in Cocoa), for their ability to keep up with technology, or at least try. Those of you bashing the developer for issuing to many updates with accusations of overzealous advertising, which is your opinion that you provide no proof for- so it's not fact, should switch over to PC and keep filling Gates's pockets, who did something similar to what you've done- make a statement without being able to back it up with fact (though, Gates was much more convincing to IBM than you, leading IBM to believe Gates's lie that he had a OS- when he never did). Whoever you are Mr. Developer, keep-a pluggin' away. When you feel your software is stable enough, has all the corks and whistles on it that your happy with and so forth, thus slowing down the updating releases- that's when you'll have my money for Pro. Until then, keep-a pluggin man.

NICKY  For god's sake, Mr. Software Developer, PLEASE stop bombarding these servers (and subscribers to this service!) with twice-a-week micro-upgrades. In other words, enough with this free backdoor advertising for your product!

I assure you, EVERYBODY already knows about LimeWire and we don't need to be reminded more often than the alarm clock wakes us up in the morning. I personally am going to buy the Pro version once it comes out because LimeWire is reasonably stable and fairly efficient at doing it's job. I'm going to wait until LimeWire has reached version 5.0 and not a moment before. I'm also going to skip the next 89 incremental releases (version 5.0.0 minus version 4.9/11) and the next 89 beta releases inbetween. Let's see, that's only 178 releases away. Yippeee!

B Y  No problems with the LimeWire Pro OS X versions for me -- I have successfully used: Pro OSX 4.8.1 (the last official non-beta), 4.6.0, 4.4.3, 4.2.6 and back into the 3.x days.

(OS X 10.3.7 on iMac FP 1GHz, 1GB RAM)

I have used the current OS X Pro 4.9.x versions and they generally seem fine also.

The one item to note, referenced by the individual below who said partial downloads were trashed, I found that happend to me when I went to use the 'regular non-pro' 4.9.x version after I had been using Pro 4.8.1 version. I wanted to try the newer non-pro beta. So there is something slightly different about how the Pro and non-Pro, or the older Pro and newer betas, interact with its download history tracking. Yes, that part should be fixed - but, the versions numbered 4.9.x are still officially in beta.

(Remember their version numbering schema: odd second position numbers are beta (as 4.7.x or 4.9.x), while even second numbers are official/final releases (as 4.8.x and the soon 4.10? or whatever they number it).

All the best, B.Y.

ANONYMOUS  Again, there are idiots complaining about too many updates. First of all, nobody makes you update, whether it's a new computer or a new software upgrade. You can choose to do it or not. Secondly, this is a program you don't have to pay for if you don't want to,and we should be happy that it is updated at all. Thirdly, people want the latest technology and want to be ahead of the competition, but complain if they have to do anything about it, like updatIng. If you are one of these idiots, feel free to keep complaining and embarrassing yourself.

As far as a rating goes, it's quite a good program, and the developers deserve a little more respect than complaints.

ANONYMOUS  As someone pointed out, presence does not imply statistical correlation (LimeWire may simply be on most Macs, not simply most crippled Macs). Also, statistical correlation does not always imply causality.

In addition, LimeWire may simply be pushing Mac's Java subsystem pretty hard.

I've seen pure Java NIO kernel panic up-to-date OS X Pather. The frequency of kernel panics could be brought down to about one every 2-4 hours if all of the operations related to the nio select were put on the same thread (something that is explicitly not required by the Java API). It turned out to be a bug in Apple's kqueue implementation and the panics could be completely eliminated by telling the JVM to use select instead kqueue by passing -Djava.nio.preferSelect=true or the equivalent using calls to java.lang.System before any NIO sockets were created. If you keep kernel panicing, you're eventually going to run into problems, because even with a journaling file system, many applications that would be running at the same time simply don't write out data to disk in a way that guarantees data consistancy.

JOSEPH WATT  If my instructions for setting the Firwall in OS X do not solve the Limewire launch problem - then what you have is a incomplete JAVA installation. This is NOT a Limewire problem! It is an Apple problem which can be easily fixed. Here is the fix for that (you will need the Panther Installer disc for this!):

Repairing an Incomplete Java Installation

1. From the Finder, navigate to /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Resources/

Move the version.plist file to the Trash.

2. An authentication dialog may appear. Enter an administrator username and password.

3. Insert the Mac OS X v10.3 Install Disc 1 CD while current Panther install is running (do not start from the installer disc - just place it in CD-ROM drive only)

4. If a new Finder window opens presenting the installer, close it.

5. From the pull down menu, choose the option: Open a new Finder window

6. Navigate to Mac OS X Install Disc 1 and then this path: /System/Installation/Packages/ and double-click the file called Java.pkg.

7. Follow the instructions on the installer.

Following these steps should force an installation of the proper Java version onto the system, restoring proper behavior. It will work everytime. Fell free to write me if you have problems with this procedure.

JOSEPH WATT  Those of you who did not bother to go to Limewire's site to read about the work around for 10.3.9 and the new Apple Security update posted last week, here it is. (See below). You must do this, in order for Limewire to work under Apple's new security update:

OS X 10.3.9 FIREWALL:

To open the OS X firewall for Gnutella access, please do the following:

1. open up 'System Preferences'

2. Open 'Sharing' folder.

3. Select the 'Firewall' tab

4. Select 'New...' button on right hand side

5. From the 'Port Name' drop down box, select 'Gnutella/LimeWire'

6. Select 'OK'

ALLAN VS. PREDICTOR  Then why...do you not write the reason that the password is required in the window that is shown, before the password is entered?

-And perhaps a much better solution: To put the application in the root of the disk-image, so the user can copy it manually to the app folder, this does NOT require a password for normal admin users. (I am an admin user, and I'm asked for a password!)

ANONYMOUS  Seems to be an inherant problem with Limewire on an ADSL connection (which notoriously change IP address every hour or so or just cut out now and again)

in that it will cause your download to just stall on 0/k a second and forcing you to manually pause then hit resume. This is really annoying behaviour.

Is there any fix to this ? It's not a problem I have with bittorrent for example which seems to keep the connection alive and just keeps going (I have set port forwarding for BT, but not for Limewire as I didn't think LW needed it)

thanks

ANONYMOUS  Is the non pro version of Limewire crippled ? I get speeds in the 100's of K for the first 50 percent of big downloads then it just trickles to 6k/sec for the last half.

ILGAZ  If you have spring cleaning 7.x from Allume (Aladdin), take a system snapshot before installing and make sure to compare to the installed state.

Applies to all versions.

DYLAN HULL  Well, I was super exited about installing the latest version of Limewire, because I have been a faithfull user for a long time. To my dismay, right after I installed and launched it, it had a 'Fatal Error'. On the progress bar it said it was trying to contact hosts or something, then when I tried to search for something, it force quit itself, the fatal error message came up again, and when I tried reopening it, the grey 'can't find' question mark came up, and when I looked in the Limewire folder, all that remained were the 'Limewire At Launch' script and maybe 1 or 2 other folders, but the application itself had completely dissapeared, as well as a few other folders. I see this as extremely odd, and wonder how an application could...delete itself... Any comments would be great. Thanks

ANONYMOUS  No one is forcing you to continuously download the updates. If what you have works fine for you, so be it... It is not like the program is disabled because a new build is released. Use your head...

KAREL  i love this app, but hate the spinning beachball whenever i try to change any of the pref ... i'm sure i'll be told it's all my own fault, but hey, perhaps there are others out there that have this prob and perhaps the devs will give it some thought ... meanwhile i'll have to take off a point for that little prob ...

ET VOILà  The VM issue is specific to the Apple java implementation on os x. We'll have to see if 1.5 in panther corrects those errors. LW devs spent days to find the bug with us beta testers, but no dice.

There never was limeshop on os x and LW stopped bundling it on windows as of version 3.9

GREGG  I have been using P2P programs for many years and first tried LW about 3-4 years ago. I want happy with it then but it seemed to have promise so I check on it from time to time.

My latest test results:

Win 2000- crashes the kernal in a hour. That is on a fully patched machine with 1GB Ram, 1.7Ghz processor, and VM extended. Current Sun JVM.

Linux- kernal panic in a few hours. About the same specs on the machine.

MAC OSX 10.3.x

Same results on a G5 server machine with 2 cpus and 2 GB of RAM.

Bottom line, i am really impress that LW can crash any machine I put it on but unless this "feature" is fixed I will warn others off and certainly keep my money in my pocket.

Another crappy release! And that is too bad, the LW community has some good shares. Now, I am off to test bit-torrent, yeaah!

A SATISFIED USER  I totally agree with the previous post. Limewire does a incredible job for me, and I just can't understand why some people have trouble with it !?

In any fields it works much better than any other similar programs I tried. (Poisoned, Acqlite, Acquisition, Cabos, Xfactor, iSwipe...)

I ALWAYS got everything I wanted with Limewire, and it's far from the case with the others.

Go Limewire !

(No, i'm not related with the developers).

ILGAZ  Limewire attempted to install the first ever spyware on OS X, Limeshop thinking we mac users are morons not to figure it. Then pulled it.

Its enough to give bad review to this application.

JUST ANOTHER PERSON  To this day, I STILL can't believe that people feel they have a right to complain about something that they are downloading that they should be paying for in the first place. I have a G5 Dual 2.0GHz Mac w/2.5 Gigs of RAM, and after using POISON (can't really download stuff all the way with this program, but you already know that), DRUMBEAT (Even with the power of my machine this program acts like I'm running it on a 17MHz Performa), ACQUISTION (fast and nice WYSIWYG, but it's downloading most everyting from people that use Limewire anyway AND I don't get as much for files), and a couple of others. BY FAR LIMEWIRE IS THE BEST THAT'S OUT THERE. You will NEVER get everything you want all the time, but if you check two to three times a day for the file you're looking to use, you'll eventually find it on LIMEWIRE. If you can't find it on LIMEWIRE, then go to the store that offers what you're looking for and get it there, AND STOP COMPLAINING!!!
