CRAIGD  Rather than paying $4.95, just go to

http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/evaluate.html

and get them to send you the evaluation version which is 8.8 - your old v8 activation key will work.

MOOFTHESTOOF  I purchased the upgrade to 8.6 just a couple of months ago, and would really be upset if I had to pay $50 per license to get the 8.7 upgrade. Thankfully, I've not missed TB2, yet, because the screensharing feature built into 10.5 does the task admirably. Now, I haven't yet tried it on machines outside my LAN, but since I never did with TB2 either, I'm not sweating it.

KIDDAILEY  According to the site, it's $4.95 to upgrade from 8.6 to 8.7. I'm tempted to email them and see about getting a free upgrade since the only change they list is that it works with Leopard... and 8.6 already does work with Leapord (I'm using it right now)

KG5NA  I noticed the update and tried to find what it covered at Netopia's website. They don't seem to claim anything new except 10.5 compatibility. I bought the 8.6 update when it came out and didn't see any changes s I don't use skype. I just installed 10.5 last night. I noticed the TB2 icon was not in the menu, but when I ran the program it popped up. Under 10.5 TB2 8.6 seems to connect a lot faster. I have not noticed any problems with TB2 8.5 on 10.5 so what's the upgrade for? Maybe just to get $4.95? Post a link if you find any updates please.

TOMNIBUS  Um.... I PAID for the upgrade. When I put in my username/password and get to the download screen it says to download the 8.6 CD! What the heck is up with that?!

MAC STEVEN  I bit the bullet and downloaded Timbuktu Pro, hoping to get even better fullscreen display update performance from my Belkin gigabit networked Mac and Windows PC.

It turns out that Chicken of the VNC running against TightVNC server on a PC machine is at least as fast as the multi-platform Timbuktu Pro version 8.5.

So don't waste your time trying TB2Pro - Chicken is just as fast for $200 less.

HUBI SCHULZE  I was not able to set any prefs on ssh-compression and technical support send me this:

There is not a way to set commpression using a Mac platforms.

so, an ssh-tunnel with compression enabled is still be best way *hmpf*

ANONYMOUS  While I'm using my Windows 2000 PC at work, I use Timbuktu to control my Mac at home. There's nothing built into The Mac OS that will allow you to do that. VNC can work and it's free, but I would argue that Timbuktu offers a superior experience.

MACMAN  Timbuktu offers a vastly superior experience -- even over Apple Remote Desktop, which is itself VNC-based.

PCHARLES67  MacOSX has built in VNC, but Timbuktu is far superior. I am reluctant to upgrade while version 7 is working well for me at the moment.

DOUG B  I've upgraded Timbuktu from v6 to v7 and couldn't be more pleased. The greatest new feature is being able to set the port (other than 407) to whatever is needed without having to run an Applescript to change the port invisibly. Connectivity using email address to IP through Netopia's IP locator service is far more reliable for me as well.

The toughest part has always been getting the connection through all the myriad brands of routers and with complicating factors such as web proxies. Once initial setup is debugged getting your port forwarding mapped to your IP, it's a dream!

RPAEGE  I have also use TB2 for many years. While I found early OS X versions slower than OS 9 (gawd I hate having to invoke the name of that decaying old corpse) this just isn't the case in new versions. I mostly use it for connections to an old OS 9 box that controls an old scanner. It performs flawlessly and is very quick running on my dual G4 with Panther over both our local network and our corporate WAN. The interface is looking better all the time. It's simple, effective, and looks very professional. While I do wish the menu bar icon was classier, this is a niggling complaint. I honestly don't know how anybody can find this slow but I will say that it can only be as fast as the fastest machine running it, or as fast as the speed of the network it's connected to. Regular updates and good support for their product mark a first-rate application that is worthy of a permanent place in my arsenal of tech support options.

ERIC  I've used Timbuktu for years, and 7.0 is the best yet. It helps me take care of my parents' eMac 1,200 miles away. Nothing else I've seen can touch it. You can change resolution on the fly with the click of a button to speed things up when you don't need to see color or the finest detail.

All in all, worth every penny.

MICHAEL MULLANE  HI,

I am going crazy trying to work out how I could set up a video camera inmy UK home and monitor (remotely) from a computer in another part of the world.

I understand that TIMBUKTU may be the answer - but I have just realized that the computer inmy home must be PERMANENTLY connected to the internet. In UK the cost will be excessive. Is there any other way of getting the computer in my house to turn on and log onto the internet at a certain time and then for me to log on and use Timbuktu to control my home computer? Am I asking for too much? I'd appreciate any advice you may have

ANONYMOUS  I've been using Timbuktu for years and it is one of the best remote control apps available. I believe the Mac GUI is much, much better than the Windows interface and am not sure why anyone would complain about it. I use this in conjunction with Apple Remote Desktop which has a few features that Timbuktu does not. Timbuktu tends to be more stable than ARD as well.

TIMBUKTU IS NO MORE...  Unrecognizable from where it once started. Poor GUI, poor implementation and severely behind the times in all facets. If Netopia simply wanted to go after the money, which they did, they should have bailed out of the MAC market altogether and left it with dignity. Instead it seems they have left us with a lame app, probably for patent purposes and little else.

ANONYMOUS  (I know this reply is a little late, but...)

Only Windoze Lusers spell MAC in ALL CAPS!

Timbuktu rules, and like all other great pieces of software, it started out on the Mac as a Mac-only application. But since it talks Windoze too, that makes it even better -- now I don't have to even touch a Windoze keyboard to manage the flaky servers. ;-)
