ABBOTT  This looks like LAST January's update, not THIS January's. All the documentation, file dates and so on indicate January 7 2005. I'm sticking with what I have until this gets sorted out.

MAC5  Yet another confusing update posted by ATI.To make matters worse, I am unable to download this ROM update because the link informs me that my session has timed out... this is after viewing this update for about 5 seconds..

God, how do these companies ever survive.. You might imagine that a company the size of ATI would by now be able to post a simple update for Mac users to download easily.

The ATI site is nothing short of a nightmare of ever decreasing circles that take you nowhere.

I am a confirmed ATI card user, but they really do need to present themselves in a better fashion to those of us who use the net and ATI products.

ANONYMOUS  IN THE FUTURE THE APPLICABILITY REQUIREMENTS DESCRIPTION FOR THESE UPDATES SHOULD CLEARLY DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN ATI GRAPHICS CARDS FOR THE MAC AND APPLE-INSTALLED OEM ATI GRAPHICS CHIPS!

ANONYMOUS  No need to yell. Your request is unreasonable. Why label these at all? All Apple OEM graphics/driver updates come from Apple. All Retail patches come from the manufacturer. That is why it is so funny to hear people ask about their powerbooks. SInce when can you buy a retail card for a PB?

We see this year after year, but Apple considers the graphics drivers part of the core OS, so they always update OEM cards this way. Now you know.

DPG4450GUY  It already does - does the word "retail" register with you?

READ the RELEASE NOTES.

TOURNESOL  Is this update for my ATI RADEON 9700 Mobility in my Powerbook?

The AGP listed at the bottom confuses me.

ANONYMOUS  no this is for retail cards not OEM, for OEM card then see Apple for updates.

Read this: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894

to do ROM update, safe-boot is required.

As always, read the Read Me before using it.

DPG4450GUY  This relates to the August 2005 ROM Update !!! - I've noticed there are reviews in this thread that are for an older release?

---------------------

Note that this requires 10.3.6 or higher! READ those release notes.

---------------------

Ran flawlessly on this DP 450MHz PowerMac with the Radeon 8500 card running Panther 10.3.9. Repaired permissions prior to install. The software REQUIRES you, THE USER, to reboot IMEDIATELY following installation, so don't forget to perform that vital final step.

You will note the pinwheel BSD portion of the boot after the first restart will take two or more times longer than usual - DON'T PANIC - give it time to finish.

Good job, ATI.

ANONYMOUS  I have a Radeon 9000 card and this installation went fine. I had to reboot twice after installation, though. After the 1st reboot I got the grey screen with white type telling me that I had to reboot (again). Second boot went fine and everything is fine.

ANONYMOUS  For all of you who rush into these updaters (like me), please note this from ATI's website:

Icon for displays is -gone- from system preferences in 10.2.8

ATI's Mac support is a total joke. Once, they even sent me a link to the PC drivers! Functionality seems ok, but there's no way for me to change resolutions now.

BUCKEYE  My new attitude about ATI updates is "if it ain't broke, don't take any chances." I was using last year's October update on my G4 500 10.2.8 w/ 8500 just fine, but installed this update out of curiosity. My Mac wouldn't restart - froze on the grey screen with the apple logo, with a little black bar (it was clearly trying to tell me something, but couldn't manage). Had to reinstall 10.2 before I got my system back to where I started.

The video card is OK, but ATI's Mac support really does seem like an afterthought.

COWICIDE  What's new? I have an ATI Radeon 8500 and I was forced to use the OS X 10.2.8 built-in drivers b/c ATI didn't bother to release anything.

Now that they have... is it worth it? Is there now a pref pane or ATI menu bar item with options like you have in OS 9 or is it still lame and without any options in OS X like before?

I read the ATI release notes and NO mention of what's new for the Nov. 10.2.8 release! WTF?! Contacting ATI via emai only got them to send me links to the driver.

So far, it looks like ATI has dropped the ball on it's cusomers, BIG TIME.

ANONYMOUS  Big Problems - Installed the update and now my G4 Dual 450 won't start up properly. I have 10.2.8 installed and when the grey Apple logo shows up the screen freezes! No disk activity. I can boot into OS 9 so it's not hopeless. Any way I can replace the .kext files from an older driver version?

MACDUDE  This worked great. Went off without a hitch. Things seem to be snapper. Minimize and maximize seem to be faster. This is on a G4 400 /w Radon 9000 pro. Colors seem brighter too. I use a CRT.

JIMW  WARNING: According to the release notes: DO NOT INSTALL THIS IF YOU ARE RUNNING PANTHER (10.3).

All updates are included with Panther. This update is for 10.2.8. If you install this on Panther, it is possible to do more harm than good.

ANONYMOUS  Does this updater apply to stock-cards? Or after-market? I have the 9800 Pro in my dual G5 but am not sure if I should risk installing this.
