SHOCK J  Suddenly I can't login to Facebook. A Captcha windows opens and says "Facebook thinks you're not you. To prove you are, please enter your date of birth." It then provide 3 fields for year, month and day, but no matter how I enter the correct info, it just keeps cycling. The fields are pre-populated with zeros, so I assume they want numerical values, but nothing works. Not 1, not 01, not Jan not January, nothing. Anybody else seeing this?

STILL_SPARKLING  Adium is perhaps the single most famous, high-quality free app that makes Windows users gnash their teeth in envy. The praise it receives is richly deserved: it's been a stable, full-featured workhorse on most Mac users systems for years. Yes, video chat would be awesome, but from the steady pace of updates Adium receives, I know if this were possible, we'd already have it. It's still the best chat client on the Mac platform, imo.

Keeping that in mind, I'd like to offer a bit of constructive criticism:

1. The Adium homepage really needs an update. There's nothing "wrong" with it per se, but, considering the amount of traffic it must receive, it could use a refresh to make it more streamlined and user-friendly. A bit of color wouldn't hurt either.

2. The Wiki and videos and are nice, but most news users don't want to watch videos or plow through a wiki after installing a new app, they want to start using it right away. This is especially important for visual apps like Adium. A QuickStart guide with plenty of screenshots would be a helpful addition to the homepage.

3. The app itself could use a bit of a touch-up from a user interface standpoint. One of the most common features of any chat client is the ability to make the window(s) stay on top of other apps. In Adium, this is hidden under Preferences-->Advanced-->Messages-->Window Handling (uncheck "Hide While Adium Is In The Background). There are further, separate options for the Contacts list and the Status Window. Clunky and confusing. A simple solution is to use View or Window "Stay on Top".

4. The Xtras: one of the best things about Adium! The Xtras should be able to be browsed and installed from within the app, much like Unsanity's Shapeshifter. Those bozos from Unsanity may have cashed out and left their users in the lurch, but they did have an elegant way of browsing through and installing themes. I think that method is superior to the one Adium uses, where you have to click each individual item on the Xtras page to look at and/or install something. Failing that, add some javascript to the Xtras page so the user can hover over an image without clicking, to get a zoomed view of the contents.

SHOCK J  Anyone having a problem with Adium suddenly not being able to connect to their Yahoo account? If I go to Yahoo's web site I can log onto chat no problem. I updated my credentials in Adium to use full Yahoo e-mail address (it seems to need that now) and it still just hangs on "Connecting." Restarted the computer just to make sure. Still won't connect to Yahoo. I can connect via Yahoo's Messenger app, so it' not my connection.

Anyone else seeing this?

If it isn't what you're looking for, try iChat, Skype, aMSN, Yahoo Messenger, etc... there is a fair amount of programs which allow webcam, but unfortunately the Adium webcam isn't ready for now.

MISCHIVO  MSN errors galore.

I don't know about anyone else, but ever since version 1.3, MSN has been causing me miniature headaches every time I login/start up the program. It keeps telling me

Unknown error (205)

I also receive "Buddy list synchronization" issues. I tried to add someone I deleted a few months back, and the contact exists on the local list but not on the MSN server list. Whether I click "no" or "yes" for the sync option, the program seems lack a reaction. Selecting yes doesn't actually synchronize the contact to the server.

Does the Adium team plan on addressing this at all, or is this an error with MSN's servers?

DRAFTECH  Computer locks up when trying to use Adium with a user account that has OSX Parental Controls enabled. Works fine on non-restricted accounts, but when I try to run it on my daughter's account, I get a locked-up computer every time.

CASTLE ROSE  Brilliant! Adium 1.1.4 was a little slow sometimes and fidgety on a G4 with Tiger. But now it's solid and snappy. The new features are perfect. The new detachable lists are a feature I thought would only be available in my dreams. All of my Xtras still work too. I wish it was still Panther supported but I'll live. NOIVAD  I've used all the IMs out there and Adium is by far the best IM client out there. It's extremely customizable, and has a wealth of plugins. It's very polished with only a few caveats: file transfers don't always work through AOL's IM conduit but I'm not sure about other IMs. It virtually never crashes, and on the extremely rare occasions it does, it's very polite. All in all a great product well worth the time to set it up.

FRANKFX  Ever since version 1.0.1 or so Adium is crashing alot on my MacBook Pro. All seems to work fine until I acces a menubar item like status or the menubar icon. This latest version 1.1.1 won't even recognize my settings and runs the Setup Assistant. Ok so I give it a try and set it up again only to crash after completion. I'm lucky to have version 1.0.5 backed up along with a ~home/library back up for the settings.

Loved Adium running on my G4 but now I hardly use it because of this. Since I cannot find similar reports on the internet I guess I'm the only one with this issue. :-?

UMAROMC  I'd originally tried this a very long time ago and wasn't completely pleased with it but decided to give it another go a few months ago and after giving myself time to figure out its utility I've trashed every other messenger app on my computer—save for iChatAV.

The interface is very smooth, seems more polished to me than iChat with options that make this app like the VLC of messenger applications, albeit not as complicated. 'Gone Dark' with the 'Mutation' variant is one of my little brothers' favorite setups. Considering all the options available I have to still give a 5 for Ease-of-Use because a lot is fairly straight forward.

So far I've only used this with my regular AIM and Yahoo! IM accounts as I was never fervent when it came to MSN Messenger or ICQ but I'd recommend this app to anyone looking for a solid IM experience, especially with multiple protocol-using accounts.

Given the dearth of really good software for the Mac in the 90s this app is in a class all on its own! ...and FREE?!

i usually use the client aMSN, and with proxy-settings (http) for the server and use port 80. this works well here at work with a strong firewall turned on.

when i tried Adium, all that happens is it says it couldn´t connect to the msn network.

i installed the beta-version, and this time i got logged in once, but when i tried to chat i got a message it could not be sent. then i quit it, and the next time i started Adium, it didn´t log in either.

it therefore seems very unstable to me.

i´m sure it works better at home...

RYBU03051  Adium is good if you are not using Bonjour. It is a horrible Bonjour client. I have found all kinds of problems when trying to chat with iChat clients. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. Many people can't initiate chats from an iChat client to Adium client on Bonjour. It doesn't support Bonjour file transfers. Search for iChat and Adium on Mac OS X hints and you'll find posts regarding this.

FOODTASTENICE  Adium is arguably the best IM client out there. I just wish there was a bit more compatibility with MSN. One thing that would be nice would be the ability to view and have those little messages one can have on MSN under their name. Being able to use and save custom emoticons would also be good. One thing I have noticed is that when in multi-user conversations, if another one is started they get mixed in together as one conversation. Well these are just my little suggestions. All in all, very good program that I wouldn't be able to live without.

EASER  There's not much to say. I've been amazed at how many times I have not been able to connect using MSN Messenger itself, yet Adium will let me connect to the same MS account immediately. Wish the Adium developers would take over development of MS Office. Sigh.

MISCHIVO  I would kill for a feature that allowed me to set the program to message all my online contacts with some standard (or customized) message whenever I decide to (or whenever I log in). I remember ICQ had a "message all" feature back in '99. Is this possible now? Can it be possible at some point? Is there a script/plugin that does this?

BEN_MARKO  This application, despite it's many fans, still is limited by the fact that it won't do video. It is hard to understand - the popularity of Adium would probably go through the roof if it did incorporate video.

ECLIPSE  In comparison to the classic icq and many other icq clients, Adium X is nice with one exeption: Filetransfers often don't work. It's 9 out of 10 times when Adium fails but other clients work.

JONO  A very full-featured IM client. However, Group Chat support still needs some work; there is no way to auto-join Group Chat rooms when a connection is made. This makes things tedious (Colloquy has a neat way of doing this)

File transfer often crashes Adium and there doesn't seem to be a way to send folders, only files. Block just doesn't seem to work. Video/audio chat implemetnation would be nice. It's been a while. THEGOODGUY  Such a fantastic program. I rarely encounter bugs while using Adium and when I do, I happily report them to the developers because i know it'll make this great program just better. With built-in support for full on customization including: tabbed windows, custom IM windows/Buddy lists/Texts/User Status Buttons and much more, it can't get much better. Whether you're old fasioned just liking that AOL IM sound, or you like to here the sounds of an East Asia Trainstation; Adium can change to match your style.

As much as I love this program, I am also writing so I may suggest a feature i've frequently found myself wishing it had. Support for video chat/conferencing. Hope this comes soon, and it may be easier to implement with Leopard's new core technologies.

JUSTINNORMAN  I've been using Adium X for a couple of years now, and it is definitely the best chat application for the Mac that I've seen so far. Its most prominent difference from other chat apps is probably the amazingly adaptable and customizable interface, which is what I enjoy most about it. iChat can take up a large about of screen space due to its bulky size, but Adium can be as tiny as you'd like to be, so it won't get in your way. Of course, its color, transparency, font type, and size can all be customized as well. The only thing I sometimes have to switch to iChat for is video conferencing capability, but I very rarely have that need. For the usual text chats, Adium is fantastic.

RUSSELL GLEASON  I hate to rain on Lumpy's parade, but I found out that Adium will be replacing iChat for Apple's OS-10.5.0 Leopard. Check out the APRIL 1 article (you'll see pics of Leopard) at http://www.adiumx.com/blog/

Also, after having gone to the library and using a PC to get into the Mac Chatroom of Yahoo, I did indeed find out that Adium is the only Mac Chat Client (at the time of this writing) that is not dependant upon the Java Script which Yahoo has recently shutdown.

Adium does work! I'm running a G4 Digital Audio Mac with DUAL 1.8GHz processors and OS-10.4.6 TIGER.

LUMPY  I hate to rain on the Adium love parade, but unfortunately, Adium presently lacks one essential feature: webcam video/audio support. If your needs only amount to text chat and file transfers, then this is probably great software in it's one-client-rules-them-all implementation.

But overseas, webcam-based chats absolutely rule the roost and also to a lesser extent here in the US. iChat is pretty good - if you have AOL or .Mac. But the rest of the world webcams merrily away on MSN and Yahoo. The Mac platform is in serious serious need of viable client that supports the predominant MSN and Yahoo networks in the same manner as the Windows counterparts. For potential switchers, it's a deal-breaker right now.

the best bit is that there isn't a Windows app to rival it. Even trillian and gaim aren't as awesome as adium.
