JMCCLOUD I still grieve the death of AppleWorks. iWork/Pages is not an adequate replacement. Also Pages fails the Mum test. My Mum finds it baffling and unusable but she had no problem with AppleWorks and has no problem with MS Office. (Version 6.2.9)

A. WIGMORE I downloaded this version as my Appleworks kept changing the font from the default, and I keep having to change it back again. The 6.2.9 was supposed to help for this, according to a comment I found on the web. It didn't: worse, a lot of the time it seems to have a delayed reaction to my typing. What do I do? I have a OSX 10.2.8. (Version 6.2.9)

STEVE PERRY Every time I cut and paste in world procession, this version -- and the older ones -- reverts the pasted material to Helvetica. Work around is easy enough, just select the material and change the font back, but it is annoying. Anybody know if this is gonna be fixed? Ever? (Version 6.2.9)

ANONYMOUS This is a general problem with OS X. Typing is delayed in Appleworks, REALbasic, Script Editor, Internet Explorer, AOL Instant Messanger (If you have 10.2 or higher and you're still using AOL Instant Messanger instead of iChat then you're a real stupid person), Mail, and some other useless or not well know programs. As far as I can tell, this problem comes from either having a Kensington keyboard driver installed or a setting messed up in OnyX or Apple Extended Keyboard PrefPane. (Version 6.2.9)

GEOFFF Updated just fine on my Pismo 500 with 1 gig of ram system 10.3 I first updated the system 10 version and then the system 9 vesrion on a different partion on the Power Book drive. Apple works is the only app in the system 9 partion. It's the program of choice, I really wish Apple would make it more powerfull as I hate even having Office on my Computer, but there are some cases where only MS will open a certain document. Appleworks will do about 80% of what needs to be done. For Data Base I like Filemaker and wish Apple had not split his off. If your having problems with the updater not finding Appleworks make sure you downloaded the US Canadian Version not the English International version a easy late night mistake. Again the beauty of Appleworks I messed uo, it uninstalled the English International version. I reloaded my original disk and got the right updater and everything just worked. (Version 6.2.9)

DRADRIENYOUELL Opening dotDoc WORDs, Geoff, Have you tried Nisus Writer Express, a Cocoa app ? Nisus open all those darned dotDoc attachments, I even forget I am in Word - I'm not, I'm in NWEx. We cannot get the v.629 AppleWorks in England, not so sad - NWEx is streets ahead in Panther. Pity about my old ApplewWorks files. ps Outside-USA suffers again. I did write to Apple Feedback. Why USA only? pps I really must tell David Pogue ;-)

ANONYMOUS I had the same problem, but finally got it to work by putting the .smi file into the "Startup Items" folder in the "System Folder" (the one for Classic). Then I restarted Classic using the Classic System Preference (System Preferences >Classic>Start/Stop>Restart). After OS 9 started, the installer opened with the license window and everything proceeded smoothly from there. OS is 10.3.2. (Version 6.2.9)

JIMW This is Apple's "sleeper" product. It simply never seems to get the recognition it deserves. It can import in some fashion about 80% of what you have and export equally, if you know what you are doing. It is great value for the money and is one of the few products to have run a Microsoft product off the "store shelves" - Microsoft Works. For word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, publishing, and graphics needs, it will fulfill the real needs of most non-professional users and about half of the needs of the professional users. Where it does fill such needs it makes the purchase of expensive programs such as Office, Photoshop, Filemaker, Quark, unnecessary. If I had a bare bones budget for computers, I could probably get by with just an Emac and AppleWorks and do word processing, email, spreadsheets, drawing, painting, presentations, browsing, desktop publishing, databases, newsletters, taxes, bookkeeping etc. Another-words, I could run an entire business with just that one computer and that single program. Does it have limitations - most certainly. It is not as full featured as its more expensive cousins. Its database is flat file only, limited in size by memory and not easily scriptable. It does not support plugins for graphics. It is not always easy to move data between Appleworks and some of the other popular, more expensive products. Nevertheless it can be an inexpensive simple elegant solution for a multitude of tasks and and ideal resource for those with a limited budget, limited time to learn complex products, or both. I always keep it around and it has bailed me out of many a difficult situation where I did not have the correct tool or nothing else has worked. (Version 6.2.9)

ASMEURER I've seen many carbon apps that are very well written. Word, for example, supports several cocoa features like save sheets and font smoothing. Although there hasn't seemed to have been much going on with Appleworks lately, maybe that's what Apple is working on. (Version 6.2.9)

YOXI If you want the International English version, go to: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=120213 This page will also have any non-English version that come out in the future... It's great to have scrollable docs, viewable fonts, and even a proper doc preview in the Finder (maybe that's a Panther thing rather than an AW update thing, but I didn't notice it before this update). MACMEND the one problem with this is the drawing part of the package, it is still not as good as the original macdraw or ClasrisDraw mainly because you cannot draw "to scale" as in 1:20, you can scale the drawing byu increasing or decreasing in size and it has some vector tools, but it doesn't dso the trick. JIMMY I still miss the ability to translate a drawing into a .GIF file. Also, when the "fonts menu in Actual fonts" general preference is checked, access to the font menu slows down considerably. It would also be nice if font "Style" pop-up menu was back on the text ruler--also fonts pop-ups on drawing rulers. Everytime I need to change fonts, I have to go searching "way up there." When it was Clarisworks, it was a better program. It's also the least stable of my applications on OS X Jaguar. It's the only one where I get "application unexpectedly quit" messages. Which can be a nuisance. Oh, well. I believe it will get better. I believe!!! (Version 6.2.7)

JAMES T. SAVIDGE Greetings, As of this date, the 6.2.7 updater is *only* for the North American English version of AppleWorks. If you run the updater and it tells you that it cannot find a version of AppleWorks installed on your system, and you know you installed it correctly, it may be because you have a different language version installed. You may have the International version or one of the language specific versions. If so, like myself, you will have to wait for those updates to be released at a later date. James T. Savidge, Thursday, April 24, 2003 (Version 6.2.7)

WOLF Better, but still lacks the efficiency of the earlier ClarisWorks. Apple needs to put more effort into improving this, so that it is a full solution for basic users. (Version 6.2.4)

DANSHAFER The updater does not appear to work correctly on my up-to-date Jaguar installation. It says it can't find a suitable application for upgrade and suggests that I reinstall the original program. This happens for both the OS X and OS 9 versions of the AW program on my disk. Then after it has obviously not done anything (because the updater showed zero progress), it apparently erroneously updates the version to 6.2.4 so any subsequent attempt to update is met with the "you are already running this version or later" dialog. Wholly unsatisfactory in this experience. (Version 6.2.4)

ANONYMOUS Good overall solution but overall MS office owns so. Also this app seems not as easy to use as lets say MSOffice 2001 or MSOFFICEX. but in some ways its easier than office so instead of a 3 it gets a 5. Features are there but it could use a few more but basically it would get a 4 because it has lots of features its just missing a few. Value well if you have office you dont need this if you dont you need this so I would have to give this a three. It is not the standard but it can finnally read office files so it goes up a couple stars so from 2-4. Stability well I have seen only one bug and its fixed so I give it a 5 overall great stuff keep it up apple. (Version 6.2.4)

CAM REVOL Well, the updater worked like a charm on my installation of OS 10.1.1 on my beige G3 tower(upgraded with a 500MHz G3, and it has 768MB RAM) ...Jeez, I love OS X and so does my beige... btw, AppleWorks launched like a bat out of hell, as ever, seems to work just fine and the "About AppleWorks" window states it is 6.2.2 (Version 6.2.2)
