SHANE C SMITH What the hell happened to this software?! Bugs, crashes, and bloatware. Get rid of the animations and templates please! At least offer the software as an install so you have the option to not install the templates and any other software it comes with. How about make a PPC and separate Intel version? This is by far the worst version of this software to date. (Version 10.0.4)

Trash the Menu Styles you think less useful or nice, and save a few hundred MB, and that's before slimming/de-localizing. If anyone finds 'bloat' elsewhere, please yell. (Version 10.0.3)

BAIANAMISTY Regarding the previous comments, 'updates' are also out of the question. So when you buy their software, be prepared to use it without any support or updates until you want to buy the next version at full price. I hope the justifiably dissatisfied customers' complaints spread enough to hurt these robber-barons in the wallet. Even if they have no sense of business obligation, I hope their sense of business survival might force them to actually start providing the service and support we were led to believe that we would receive. But then again, with the 'I want it all and I want it now' mentality of Wall Street still alive and well, I suspect the management of this company will ignore their customers until the red ink of their balance sheets eventually forces them to look for another scam. BAIANAMISTY Toast is fast at copying DVDs and backing up data, but over the years, I have had to pay in full, several times, for the software (thanks to my college's supplies budget). Once this company gets your money, any advertised support or upgrade paths are fictitious. For example, the user 'sign in' button on their website does not link to anything. And all previous mail from the company thanking you for your money, etc. is sent by automated e-mail and therefore will not accept e-mail replies from customers. In other words, once they have your money, you have no e-mail access to their company, representatives, web site ... no nothing. And I'll be damned if I am going to shell out money for a long distance call from Japan. For all subcategories of this rating scheme, I will have to give it a maximum of 1 star, simply because any feature, ease of use, or stability ... given the number of years and bogus 'upgrades' I have paid for ... are a mute point when you do, eventually, have to upgrade. All in all, it is a decent bit of software programming that is in the hands of unscrupulous leeches, although the personnel may well be one and the same. (Version 10.0.2)

UMAROMC Unfortunately I'd have to disagree with the part about having access to their website. The last version I upgraded to was Toast Titanium 7 and, since registering the software on their site years ago, I've been able to access it a couple of times when I had to re-download the latest update for 7 for both a fresh install on my MDD G4 after an OS re-install and years later when I got my MacPro Xeon. I can't comment on direct support from customer service because I've never needed it... and whilst this version still works with my current setup and I'm not doing anything with BluRay I won't be upgrading anytime soon. JON555 I went from version 9 to version 10 and have yet to see any real changes except that the dock icon is now blue, which makes me wonder why I spent so damn much money to "upgrade". Honestly, how is this worth a whole version number upgrade? And stop throwing more useless applications in the bundle that people rarely use, just so you can somehow justify charging such a ridiculous price. Toast itself is an awesome application, but the company behind it is not, and the price is just stupid. This, coupled with terrible customer support, makes me wonder how Roxio stays in business. ANONYMOUS In 10% of the cases Toasts refuses to burn VIDEO_TS folders, saying : "The folder cannot be managed". I surfed the web and found lots of people with the same problem (including those trying to burn iDVD films). This TOAT's message is undocumented and stays very cryptic. One thing is sure, the VIDEO_TS folders that Toast refuses to burn are perfectly and flawlessly burnt by lots of free softwares (eg QuickBurn). So why bother and pay a lot of money for TOAST's gas machine when the job can be done for free by less ambitious and more reliable applications ? The only advantage of Toast, to me, is that its VIDEO_TS burning is really faster then its competitors (when it works ...). (Version 10.0.2)

MONTY LEE Toast 10 Titanium Pro comes with a folder of Pro Applications on the DVD. Included in that folder is a dmg file called "Sonicfire Pro Bonus Audio Tracks.dmg" which works with SonicFire Pro 5. The dmg file fails during the initial verification due to "codec overrun." Nothing I have done is able to mount the dmg, including copying to the hard drive, using other computers (3), and trying Disk Utility and Stuffit 13. I submitted the question to Roxio but in a week have not gotten any resolution (their suggestions were to update Stuffit (I have the latest version) and try removing the codecs from Quicktime. Since I was getting no where, I called today (Monday) and was on hold for 38 minutes and finally talked to Tech Support (PC expert, not a Mac expert). He said the only Mac expert they had said to remove the Quicktime codecs as that was the problem. For the life of me, I cannot see how a Quicktime Codec can interfere with trying to verify and mount a dmg file, but I did what they said. I copied the folder to another drive, deleted all the codecs, rebooted, and emptied trash. Then I tried the process all over again trying to mount the dmg file. It fails for the same reason. I never received any update back from Roxio (turn-around is about 24-48 hours), but SmartSound (Sonicfire Pro) says they have received multiple complaints about this. So I suspect that the file is corrupt in some way, and Roxio seems very reluctant to update it or provide a download link for a valid version. Sonicfire gave me a valid link for the download. It took them less than 24 hours to solve the issue, and over 10 days for Roxio with NO SOLUTION. The program is very good (minus Divx support) but do NOT expect any support from Roxio. DigitalRiver won't help either, although they will admit they've had lots of problems from users with Roxio with respect tot he purchase side. (Version 10.0.2)

ADONSA Hello Anonymous and Vollare2, Congratulations, Anonymous, for coming from the dark side of computing to our side. Macintosh users (since 1984) define, demand, and usually get excellence in computing - far above the IBM-PC-AT-Clone/Windoze industry standard. The Roxio staff needs to closely monitor comments on this, and the Version Tracker website, and they need to respond quickly to any comments less than 4 stars or less than favorable. The Roxio staff also needs to be more cognizant that they have competitors out there. Every employee on the Roxie property needs to read, "The Macintosh Way," by Guy Kawasaki!!! Failure to respond to customers is NOT "the Macintosh way." Version 7 still works fine under System Leopard on a new Mac Pro, the Roxio website isn't clear whether or not upgrades to version 8, then 9 are fee based or free. Given that Roxio is charging full price for upgrades ($99 for version 10 under Roxio-Smith Micro) for as long as version 7 performs, there's no reason to buy a full price upgrade. Again, the Roxio staff needs to respond to each and every less than favorable comment posted here to The Macupdate. Construe all these comments as constructive - that Toast is good software in need of seriously good customer support. Be responsive, Roxio staff! (Version 10.0.2)

CORPSECORPS Why does toast bother to include menu authoring features for DVD creation when they rarely turn out usable. I dropped 4 half-hour video clips into Toast, chose a menu theme and specified 4 buttons, picked button frames in the video, dropped in a custom background, chose 3 minute intervals for chapters, and burned the DVD. For a start, the way navigation comes out is pretty pathetic. Right and down buttons always move the highlight right, only going down when it hits the right-most button. Up and left always move left. Not even a wrap-around to make navigation quicker. The menu button text was so small it was unreadable. The menu button highlights didn't match the aspect ratios of the video clips. The button highlights weren't properly aligned with the button images and neither were the navigation button highlights. This is typical of my experiences. (Version 10.0.1)

GETSOMESAUCE I confirmed this by using the program and by visiting the Toast 10 forums: Roxio's web site claims "Save streaming web video from your favorite web sites and burn to DVD ...", but it actually does not support the saving of streaming web videos. Videos that are downloaded to your browser's cache when viewed, such as from youtube or espn, will work with Toast. True streaming videos that require a constant connection to the website, such as from nbc, abc, and hulu, will not work. This is just a warning for people who think this feature alone sounds like a reason to upgrade. (Version 10)

FECKINEDJIT Come on people! At least they spent a bit of time on a shiny new icon. Credit where credit is due. ;-) Toast has been major bloatware since adding 'Titanium' to their product's name. Loads of unnecessary frameworks, menu add-ons, loads of sinister looking what's-its under the hood and an inexplicable and deceptive habit of calling each new version an update when they are actually complete apps with debatable upgrade value. Remove all the shite and you have a tight little 25-30 MB app. I predict that by version 12 it'll barely fit on a double-sided DVD. You'd think a company that has been around this long would have a clue. It all smells of a paranoid obsession with piracy. Their main interest appears to be protecting their app and the customer comes a very distant second. Roxio, my vote for worst run major software company ever. (Version 10)

Click it and voila! it's an old 9.01 version with a 10.x s/n. Called digitalriver (because Roxio uses them as a shield for their incompetence and/or inattention and/or lack of concern for end-users). The poor lady at digitialriver said "This is a known issue and I will forward your concern to our technology group. They will email you the correct link." Out of exasperation and with a slight (slight!) feeling of guilt, because I knew it was not her fault, I asked how many more days might I have to wait. She said, "They're telling us one to two days." DONMONTALVO What a scam! OK, I just got off the phone with Digital River (the company that handles Toast purchases/upgrades). They agreed to give me a free upgrade from v9 (which I bought on Jan 2nd 2009) to v10 (which came out three days later). Of course they didn't mention that I would be charged *AGAIN* and would have to go through a "process" to get a refund for v9. So my checking account gets charged twice, and I just got hit with an overdraft fee since the second charge (which I was *not* told would be applied to my account) put me over my limit. The person I spoke to was apologetic, but the fact of the matter is Roxio is out of control. I told Digital River to completely cancel my order. Now I have to deal with my bank. If I get charged $35 for going over my limit, I will take Digital River to small claims court. Believe everything you read about Roxio. They are *not* the company many of us grew up with. They've become a company with incompetent management who allowed these unreasonable upgrade prices (I have paid for v5, v6, v7 and v8...$400+ so far!). Hopefully Roxio will take advantage of the down economy and shake down the levels of management responsible for all this pie in face Roxio is getting. I really hope Roxio gets their act together. JAMERICAN I also purchased the upgrade by download and did not get the FREE Hd/BluRay plugin. I contacted Roxio who referred me to Digital River with a telephone number. After holding for 30 minutes, I hung up. A waste of money as Version 9 does mainly the same as this new version. Makes me very disappointed and frustrated. (Version 10)

MACINTOSH SAUCE I am getting so sick of companies that are pulling this crap on Mac users. One or two bug fixes and then you release a major upgrade that gives no real price break to users who have supported your pathetic company for years. Roxio, do you actually think we are that stupid? One other company did this to me recently with StuffIt Deluxe, and I decided to wipe their software off of my Macs. Bye-bye. (Version 10)

LEOOFBORG So let me get this straight -- 6 real months of real dev so that we can get ONE major different features [for video geeks, okay, I get it]. If this was worthy of being called Toast 9.5 I could see them rounding up. But this is, at most a Toast 9.*2* with the one major feature. Roxio should NOT be rounding up this time. This is just crass. Also, Roxio's idea of 'Pro' is to add... shovelware? How very Windows. Sorry Roxio, but how stupid do you think Mac folks are? I also don't see any Cocoa or Interface Build controls to make this look more 'Mac-like'.. tho' I could be wrong. Clarification: It's NOT 79-20= $59 .. it's '$79 after $20 rebate'.. MacUpdate, you can do a better editing job than that. All around, this is a bad deal at the current price point, and to folks who bought Toast 9. They still haven't fixed bugs from Toast 9! My advice is to wait until Roxio drops the price about 3-6 months from now. Toast 7 folks should upgrade. Toast 8 and 9 folks, really think about this. Seriously. (Version 10)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS I'd have to agree with all the reviewers below. Toast Titanium is an excellent product for burning disc's , but now we have version 7 , 8 , 9 and 10 , all essentially the same thing for a different minimum OSX. So it is normal to redo it and take full advantage of each new OSX. But who cares about the 3rd party garbage included with this new Pro version. It's all second rate or crippled software. Please Roxio, focus on disc burning, forget the extra garbage you've been bundling with Toast Titanium. This ain't the PC world, Mmac users don't like to be insulted with crippled and second rate bundled garbage! For those of you that don't own Toast Titanium already, the better deal is the standard version if you ask me and for those of you that already own an earlier version, there isn't too much new stuff to jump at in version 10. -1 for value (Version 10)

MACVAULT "But who cares about the 3rd party garbage included with this new Pro version. It's all second rate or crippled software." Dude, have you even tried Fotomagico? Hardly 2nd rate crap. I'm not saying you should buy the pro version of Toast, but don't make baseless statements about other software you obviously haven't tried. Nothing beats Fotomagico for slideshows on the Mac. I'm a pro photographer, and believe me, I've tried them all. I don't know about the rest of the bundle (it may be junk), but Fotomagico is 1st rate. (Version 10)
| Jan 6 2009 |
REVCO The problem is, with previous Roxio/Toast bundles anyway, all the extra software was Roxio Editions. Meaning Roxio will be responsible for support and getting updates out to you. That's not going to happen. If you need a bug fixed you'll have to spring for the retail version (at a slightly reduced rate). Happened to me with Toast 8 and 9 bundled software. Is that so for Toast 10 Pro? (Version 10)
| Jan 7 2009 |
SHOTGUNWEDDINGS MACVAULT , you haven't actually checked out the complaints on Roxio's forum about the "bundled" software for Toast 9 or 10 have you ? Although some of the programs , if purchased separately may be GREAT programs, but the RE bundled versions are crippled, outdated and cannot be updated . As mentioned, the bundled programs are either crippled or not supported by their developer's and you may as play frogger for real on a 16 lane highway while awaiting a resolution to any issues with the bundled software from Roxio's forum. (Version 10)
| Jan 7 2009 |
Actually I have not been on Roxio's forum. If that's the case (with the 3rd party add ons being crippled) that's a real shame. I never, or rarely, use the 3rd party stuff in bundles, but would think that the 3rd parties would want people to have a good experience with their stuff so that they'd get "hooked" and continue to upgrade. Shame. In any case, based on what I'm reading about Toast 10, I won't be upgrading it, or FM Pro 10, or Quickbooks, or any MS software... Until these companies start adding some real value, there's no point in throwing away $$. Eventually, when enough people start voting with their wallets, maybe they'll get a clue and actually improve their stuff. What a concept ;)

NAOH Even with the $59.99 upgrade, I'm not at all sure about what added value Toast 10 has over Toast 9 with the Blu-Ray plug-in. It seems to me that Toast 10 is simply a branding exercise to allow Roxio to roll out a Pro version that has loads of bundled third party tools that have little or no value to anyone who isn't already using Toast as the core in their media workflow. My impression is that Roxio are trying to reposition Toast into being a media workshop, rather than a disc authoring tool. The features that are being added don't appeal to me, as they are things I can already do with other tools, or have no need for. If Roxio were to provide improved integration into existing workflows, instead of trying to create yet another way to do the same things, I would be all ears. Until I see some compelling features being added to Toast beyond what is already included in Toast 9, I'll stay put. (Version 10)

Regardless, this just seems more like a point release (plus some bundled shareware-level apps) rather than another $100 necessity. Anybody with more Toast experience than I care to share their strategy for dealing with such upgrades (i.e., do you usually upgrade every 2 or 3 releases? Always? Never?)

MR650 This should probably be two different product entries on MacUpdate because Toast Titanium 10 Pro is Toast Titanium 10, with additional application features that cover the 'plug-in required' areas of other versions and add more functionality. Toast 10 = 3 or 4 versions past major changes (add popcorn, add jam, add animation, add HD, etc...not streamline or improve functionality of Toast as a standalone application). Toast 10 Pro = Toast, Plus a bunch of individual applications (Also known as Roxio Creator + Toast Mac 2009 Edition). Toast is a solid product, popcorn compression is decent, adding Jam to Toast made sense. Doing the shazam for iTunes music is good, but selling me streamripperX as a must have feature is a joke. There are two products in any Toast bundle: The Application Toast that at various points in time has had a lot of work done, and the auxiliary applications that people may or may not use (AKA Bloatware). I do not feel that this version of Toast is worth upgrading to from 9. I really dislike the way Roxio/Sonic tends to bundle applications (even trial ware) and pretend they are a unified product. If you can find a discount to take this below $30 or so, and you don't have a version of toast, popcorn, or jam, then it's probably worth it. Maybe even $50 FOR THE PRO VERSION. Otherwise, it's getting more and more stuffited. (Version 10)

Every one of them failed I took them back twice. Damndest thing is, the first pack I bought of the same brand off the same shelf with identical packaging were Ritek media code and all 50 burned without a hitch. But that is with 9.02 so maybe it is Toast this time causing your issue. (Version 9.0.4)

CORPSECORPS I've always thought certain aspects of this application were pretty slipshod. When i attempted to create a custom icon for a disc by dragging or copying and pasting an image as it says, very few image formats were recognized, and PNG's with transparency (the most logical choice) lacked the transparency. The auto menu creation and templates aren't great either. You're allowed 3 lines of information but only the title is displayed. Plus, if the title is very long at all, it's truncated. It badly needs some sort of menu customization UI elements so you can get it looking right. The automatic chapter creation facility does a pretty terrible job too. (Version 9.0.2)

THUNDERCLAP82 There doesn't seem to be much different between the previous version and this one. Two additions include Blu-Ray support and editing Tivo files. Everything else behaves as it should. While I have no need at the moment for Blu-Ray burning I was excited for editing Tivo video files. Unfortunately the editing portion doesn't behave like it should. Marking in and out points aren't precise and usually jump ahead a few seconds. Scrolling through the video also barely works. It seems like this addition was last minute and was in alpha stage at best. Unless you have a need for Blu-Ray burning stick with version 8. (Version 9.0.2)

XENOPHILE LOL, well, DUH!!! Do you complain that your car is useless for the one purpose you bought it for...transatlantic flights? If you want to copy a CSS-protected DVD, use MacTheRipper. It will extract VOBs from a DVD, resulting in a Video_TS folder that you can then burn using Toast or a number of other shareware apps (IMO Toast is easiest and always is rock solid for me). BTW I hope you own the DVDs you intend to copy, and that the copies are intended solely for personal backups to guard against damage to the original DVDs. Stealing DVD content is a crime and even if it wasn't, it is still immoral. (Version 9.0.2)

TOGGLEMEDIA Don't be fooled. There is very little reason to upgrade to this version. And I'm really not impressed with their marketing techniques. Take for example their website which promotes a $20 savings...and claims the software is now only $79. It's a lie. It's a mail in rebate..a mail in rebate which I mailed in, and just this morning got an email saying my rebate was denied. What??? Why would it be denied...I provided everything that the rebate form required. Their official reason, "Missing Proof of Previous Ownership" Are you kidding me???!!! I submitted exactly what the form required me to submit... including the serial number from a previous version. And now you are telling me that my rebate is invalid? I followed the instructions on the form perfectly. They are a bunch of criminals and liars...and will make getting your rebate so difficult so they don't actually have to HONOUR their promotion. It makes me sick and I am NEVER buying from ROXIO again...their software is sub par to begin with. Their upgrades are nothing worth upgrading too...and now this???? are you kidding me?????? CALMEFORET Thanks for letting us know. It is a truly disgusting way to go about making or saving money: first you make the customer waste time and energy, then he/she gets a lot of negative feelings for the trouble! I would stay away from any company that does this, if it is possible at all. (Version 9.0.2)

STRIDER72 By the way... did you keep a copy of the stuff you submitted? If so, you should clearly be able to show them that the form you sent had the correct info on it. I got the rebate when I upgraded from v5 to 7. Rebates are rejected sometimes for various reasons, (How's your handwriting?), but I cannot imagine that this company has some deliberate scheme to defraud its customers as you are claiming. This is a long established company, and the quality of their software is a completely separate issue from whether or not you got a rebate. Please review the **software** rather than venting your spleen over rebate policies. Saying "the software stinks because I didn't get my $20" is nonsense. (Version 9.0.2)
| Apr 10 2008 |
CALMEFORET Strider 72 has a balanced, fair-minded view. I have used Toast for many years myself and have gotten a lot of mileage from it, but I have been less than happy with Toast 8 (various problems for which I'm not sure to what extent the program itself is responsible), and I have not liked Roxio's attitude toward users, especially recently. I would say that the whole rebate idea already puts me off: if someone who buys a product gets $20 back, why not just give the discount right away and save everyone a lot of trouble? The only reason I can think of is that the company is banking on many people not bothering with the rebate, or what is FAR WORSE, their making some little 'error' that would disqualify them. The worst part to me is 1° being subjected to possible disappointment 2° WASTING time. This last point is important: if I waste time and energy sending in a rebate request and get nothing for it whether or not it is my 'fault' I resent it very much, and I feel triply cheated because the disappointment/resentment I am left ruins my day and is bad for my health. (Version 9.0.2)

VERYCARLA "Garbage" is a bit strong. Look, if you don't like it, that's fine, but if you've got a specific complaint to make then do so. Don't just badmouth the app without backing it up. Personally I love Toast. I know of no other burning app for the Mac which isn't dependent on MacOS X's built-in burning software. Further, I know of no other application which is capable of mounting a disc image so the system thinks a real disc has been inserted. I ALSO know of no other app which is capable of creating an audio CD image from FLAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF or WAV file. None of the others can do that. Toast 9 may have some trouble, but 8 is rock solid. Sure it doesn't have a lot of flashy special effects, but it doesn't NEED them. It actually works. The special effects are only there in those other apps to distract you so you don't find out they're all essentially the same as Apple's Disk Utility. Sure Toast costs more. It DOES MORE. Garbage? I have also used Toast to make video slideshows from my wedding photos-- and it worked a LOT better than competing products. GLOBETROTTERDK Using Toast 8.01 with OSX 10.4.11, get a prompt from Toast asking if I want to upgrade to 8.03. I answer "yes" and get shunted to Roxio's site. Get a prompt for "completing" my profile, which I was unable to complete LAST YEAR, do to website issues. I try to complete my profile, but am unable to include my country code using any browser that I have and therefore again, cannot complete my profile. I decide to just go ahead and use Toast 8.01, but in the process of verifying a CD image, everything on my system slows and the fans on my G5 single start running like a jet engine. With patience (and probably some luck) I managed to ride through the problem, but still have to work with Toast 8.01 as I am unable to get the update to 8.03. What did I do? I downloaded LiquidCD here at MacUpdate and burned the CD image. (Version 8.0.3)

R33C3 When I first Installed Toast when i got my mac, it was 8.0.1 I found NO problems with it, it was working perfectly, even better than expected. I have recent;y intstalled 8.0.3 and it has been nothing but trouble. I installed Toast and was trying to encode a movie file as a dvd video. So I did what I normally did and went to dvd-video and started encoding. At around 5% an error came up saying "It has closed unexpectedly". I renistalled it, same error. Completely removed it, same error. I even Reformatted my mac, thats how desperate i was and still I am getting this error. (Version 8.0.3)

WILL IZ Toast 7 not compatible with Mac OS 10.5.1. Roxio has apparently published a patch for Toast 8, see http://www.macintouch.com/leopard/compat.html for further information. I have tried iDVD (iDVD '08 the latest) in various version for years and it either freezes or takes way to long to encode DVDs (with no way of knowing where you are in the encoding process & just give up). Please see Apple support discussions on this subject to confirm similar concerns from other users. Have had great success with Toast Titanium 7 and Mac OS 10.4 in the past and with my recent failure to burn in iDVD '08, I transferred the same video source back to a computer with OS 10.4 and Toast 7 and burned the DVD without problem (plus I knew where the encoding process stood throughout the burn). RICHARD HALLAS Warning: Deja Vu 'downgrade' This latest Leopard-compatible Toast 8 upgrade includes version 3.2.3 of Deja Vu, which is not the latest Leopard-compatible version. The latest Deja Vu is 3.3 for Tiger and 3.4 for Leopard. If you turn on the checkbox in the Toast installer to install Deja Vu, it installs version 3.2.3 even if you have a newer version installed already (I had 3.4). So beware of that. You can of course download and use Deja Vu 3.4 as a free upgrade from its developer's site, but it's a pity that this Toast upgrade doesn't include the latest Leopard-compatible version. It's also a pity that it'll silently downgrade a newer version; that's pretty unfriendly. (Version 8.0.3)

AIKOUSHA Tested this new version, but had to quickly bail on it. It still does a few things it shouldn't: 1. opens on a blank disc insert when another version is already open (not a consistent thing). 2. It changed the "launch" option on blank-disc insert, without permission. 3. No way to have it stop burning unwanted/unneeded files... Usually I don't need desktop db files, DS store files, and anything else system related on a DVD disc. The Mac doesn't even require these on DATA DISCS in UDF format, let alone on DVD-Video where these extra files cause problems on many older, and a few newer, players. If it doesn't show on the burn list, it shouldn't be on the actual disc itself. 4. Bloatware alert in a major way for the multimedia handling, it was bad enough from 6 to 7, it's even worse from 7 to 8. I'll never use any of this stuff, since there are free tools that'll do this stuff better and faster (at least in most cases). I didn't test it long enough to determine if there is a memory leak, since between the problems above and the new GIGANTIC interface, I just kept version 7. The new interface is actually unforgiveable. What do people without large cinema displays do to run this program?!? So much for intuitiveness.. two more steps, it'll be like a bad PC interface. Also, with version 7, I can keep 8 other programs running (and fully tasked) while operating it... Filemaker, ffmpegx, azureus, safari, excel, photoshop, golive, and word, all without experiencing any problems or errors... Definitely can't do that with version 8. I may have to update when I get a Blu-Ray burner, but until then, I'll suffer with version 7. BTW, Toast is still the best burning software for Mac, but between the interface and bloat, it just took a major hit... from itself. (Version 8.0.1)

VERYCARLA Works well, but don't use it with anything else running. It's a MAJOR CPU/RAM hog. With just a handful of apps running, doing anything with toast brings my MacBook (1.83ghz Core Duo, 1gb RAM) to its knees. My guess is there's a memory leak somewhere because the slowdown is progressive. The longer Toast is open and the more I do with it, the worse the overall system performance becomes until it's all but unusable (thirty to forty-five seconds between the time I tell it to do something and any kind of response from the system). I use Toast because it clobbers the competition (Disco can't hold a candle to it, special effects or not). I just wish it didn't clobber my system. (Version 8.0.1)

POWERSCAPE Your Mac's G5 processor might be 1.83GHz or 2.33GHz. Of course, u can use multiple applications. As I said before, I've got G4-700Mhz-768sdram eMac in my office. So, I haven't got enough processor power to use multiple strong apps in the same time. For example; I close all other applications for watching presentation in VLC Player. I can see emac's memory usage. And, half of my memory always free. But CPU always big problem. When my boss understand that there's only solution is a new Mac, I can hadle my duties very quickly. IMAGEWORX This latest Toast 8 looks and works fine except: who thought of using Helvetica.dfont for the app??? Maybe Roxio thought they were clever, and wanted a pretty interface. But what they failed to acknowledge/fix/repair/anticipate (and it's clear from their user forum) is that for designers that remove/disable/manage the Helvetica System font (Please, even Apple is an idiot at times for this mistake) cripples any use of Toast. Launch it will fail. I've had to have designers, who've purchased 8, revert back until Roxio fixes this or they use another app like Burn 1.7 (free). Toast used to be good. What happened? As an owner since the being of your software (including all previous companies), this is coming increasingly less "Mac-like"!. 1. What about Apple software developers guidelines? 2. Butt ugly User Interface - how about a preference or sheet to eliminate the "busy" stuff? 3. Why is there "Window" software within the package? 4. What is with all the dang animation? If I was to burn a disc then I should do not want to look at what appears like some Windows Vista Flash addition! 5. Animation - enough with the CPU sucking backhole. 6. Media Browser couldn't be put into a sheet or side bar? 7. Dang by the time the animation is done, I could have all ready burned a disc! What buy a new video card to feel like the application is speedy? Big step back! 8. I'm getting motion sick with the animantions...even with the enhancements turned off. 9. The left side needs to be adjustable! I'll need to buy a 30" Cinema display if I start having multiple applications open. 10. Thank goodnes for Disc Cover...a wooden stack into Discus! 11. Disc Catalog Maker is a nice touch for a freebie. If you really need Jam, Popcorn, Tivo or "underground" Divx funcationality then buy it but this makes me want to beg Apple to create a more intuitive application. (Version 8.0)

MACERICG I've owned Toast since it was available from Astarte, through the releases when Adaptec took over, to today now that it is a Roxio product. Toast is probably one piece of software that should be installed on every Mac. Much better than Apple's built-in software. Most of the new features have worked well for me, especially with the integration of iLife. However, I recently wasted roughly 30 DVD-Rs because Disc Spanning kept hanging. Disc Spanning is the process that allows huge directories of data to be automatically saved across many discs. Tech support from Roxio stinks, as I still haven't received a reply to my online query -- not even a, "Sorry we don't know." Maybe this has been resolved in the latest release, but it would appear Roxio Mac customers are on their own. (Version 8.0)

The short answer is: The price tag. To be a little more detailed: I don't rate an app only for the app itself but also for how useful it is on the segment that it's inserted and the average price of a similar app of that segment. And frankly I just don't think that Toast is worth the price it costs when we can do exactly what it does for free. Pedro Fardilha (Version 8.0)

CURLYPAWS I've used Toast since I got a Mac, and this new version is the best yet. The best features for me are: * The progress dialog when burning * The tidier interface when choosing the disc type * The ability to fade from one song into the next (from Jam) - I just wish Apple would licence FairPlay to let Roxio do this with iTunes Music Store purchases * The disc catalog add-on I had looked at Disco, but it is a triumph of glitzy graphics over everything else. Toast is still the best. My only criticism would be the Roxio web site, where it wasn't at all clear that I could get a lower price for upgrading from Toast with Jam - so I ended up paying more than I needed to. It is a shame that the same clarity used in the Toast front-end wasn't used on the Roxio web site. (Version 8.0)

KENM22 I recently encountered a problem with the purchase of Toast 8 Titanium and have had problems with Roxio in the past. Well, things appear to be changing. I had the pleasure of dealing with a caring Roxio employee who took care of my problem in an efficient, effective and extremely friendly manner. After some discussion with this person, I came away with the feeling that things are changing for the better. My experience could not have been better. I still think that Toast is one of the best pieces of software ever written for Macintosh. I especially like the new feature in version 8, the ability to create CDs of photos that one can give to friends and family. The recipient can play a slideshow on either PC or Mac with no need for any additional software, not even Toast. This feature, alone, is worth the upgrade to me. They ran me through several hoops to create an account; yet I could not login with my new account information. Then I tried their automated answering system, only to discover (again after several dozen hoops) that they don't offer a demo. FLASH1296 This is the best software update in recent memory. It is obviously the software of the year and the year just began. Nothing will surpass it. The question is: Is Toast 8 the software of the decade? Perhaps. The list of new features is awesome, the interface is handsome, friendly as can be. the online Help is not only completely rewritten, but now it really can teach you much of what you need to know in a hurry. A few minutes ago I burned about 200 MP3's to a single CD. In the past there was a 99 MP3 limit. I also backed up some data - and now you can easily apply a color or an image to the background when the disc opens in icon view. etc. etc. etc. (Version 8.0)

JORGEHP At $59 dollars (minus the other 10% discount for leaving the shopping cart alone for a few minutes) the upgrade is worth it in my humble point of view. I was always trying to convince myself to buy Jam before, to no avail. But combining both programs in one package (and for less than half than previously available) finally made it for me. I spent time until midnight making my first crossfading cd, normalizing tracks, joining U2's MLK and Where The Streets Have No Name and Anberlin's Naive Orleans and Paperthin Hymn like God intended, you know, just trying it out. It came out perfect! With CD-Text and everything. And yes the interface is slicker (as in "somoother", "glossier", a.k.a. MECHAMANIA Yup, I know 7 is universal. That, along with Fit-to-DVD compression, made 7 pretty well worth it. The universal part of my post was in response to this: "I'm still happily using Toast 6. The only incentive I have to upgrade is so that I can have an Intel version for my MacBook, but even that's not a big issue." Just putting in my two cents that I think it can make a big difference. FRIBHEY get it for $53.99 - if you own toast 7 and want to upgrade then go to the update section on roxio's site and select toast 7, you will then see a link to upgrade to toast 8 for $59.99. if you add it to your shopping cart and then just let the shopping cart page sit for a little while (do not check out yet), after a few minutes a pop-up window will appear on the page that says something along the lines of "undecided, purchase now and get an additional 10% off", click ok on the pop-up window and the shopping cart will then update with the 10% - toast 8 upgrade will then only cost you $53.99 (Version 8.0)

JORGEHP $59 upgrade if you have Toast 7, Popcorn 2 or Jam 6 (with valid key). http://www.roxio.com/enu/upgrade_center/toast/default_esdupg.html For Toast 8 that incorporates Jam... + TiVO (which I don't really need), + Blue Ray (which I don't really have). Still.... I've always wanted Jam. Maybe I will take it. (Version 8.0)

BEDOUIN I'm still happily using Toast 6. The only incentive I have to upgrade is so that I can have an Intel version for my MacBook, but even that's not a big issue. To make me buy this they'd need to offer a $25 upgrade version, and even then I wouldn't bother with it until I had a reason to. (Version 8.0)

JBMELBY Well, now it appears from an e-mail that I just received that Roxio is going to let previous users upgrade for $69.99 all of ten dollars less than those who're buying the app for full price (after the mail-in rebate). Not much of a bargain, it seems to me. (Version 8.0)

D9 Actually, new licenses cost $100 and upgrades cost $80. Roxio is also sending out a "special" customer upgrade for $70. Still, it remains to be seen whether the new features justify the cost. Personally, I have no need for the TiVoToGo burning. The BluRay burning will be nice, but again, I won't have a need for this until late this year, perhaps. Version 7 is fast and feature-filled for me. I'm likely not to upgrade regardless of the features.

DAN FRIML OK... it's time to move to another burning app... $79.99 for an upgrade (which is the same as for new license) is.. huh... unfair? (Version 8.0)

JDUB800 Looks potentially good - Some strange pricing though. $79 for US, £69 for UK?!? Haven't these people heard of the exchange rate? Can't seem to find the upgrade pricing either...hmmm. (Version 8.0)

JBMELBY The alleged "upgrade price" ($79.99 after a $20 mail-in rebate) is the same as the price for new users. This is absurd, and an insult to those of us who've been supporting Toast since v 4 or earlier. Roxio should be ashamed! (Version 8.0)

AIKOUSHA Has Roxio corrected the problem with V7 where no matter what method you use, it sticks invisible Mac files on DVD video discs (and data discs). I use version 6 and if you burn from "DVD-Video from VIDEO_TS" all you burn is what you place there. But from my friend's iBook and Version 7, it places invisible Desktop files on the base directory (which do not show up in the main window until the burn starts). This causes some earlier DVD players to choke! And since I have to burn on an external drive using output from Sizzle and a few other minor tools, this means I cannot use version 7 (so why upgrade?). Roxio was most unhelpful with my friend, and insisted it was not a problem with the software (even after two re-installs). Personally, I won't put this on my Mac, because if it kills 6 in any way, I might lose my (proper) home burning ability. (Version 7.1.2)

DETRITUS2099 I had no problems downloading the update. I couldn't remember my password, and simply reset it using the obvious links. The email they sent to me went straight to the reset password page, which then automatically logged me in. I then simply went up to the drop down menus, found the upgrade section and re-selected Toast 7. (Version 7.1.2)

AQTINC Exactly the same problem here. I have a registered account, and it will not work. I tried to create a new account, and that didn't work either. Their customer support folks will not respond (I guess nobody's home on weekends), so they're going to find a nasty-gram upon arrival Monday morning. D9 Since Roxio requires that you have a login creds for their site's support, I'm unable to get this download. This is due to some sort of error w/ the login form. It's worked in the past but currently will not accept my info, nor will it allow one to register for a new account.

RDPTWH After creating a 5 DVD spanned archive, it has become obvious that the "Roxio Restore.app" does not work. The application copies itself to ~/Library/Application Support/Roxio, launches & then terminates & deletes itself with no action, no warnings & nothing written to the system console. Needless to say, nothing is restored from the spanned archive either. Roxio is clear that this does not work on Windows machines, but fails to mention that it does not work on Macs either! The Roxio "support" page is a joke. If "asking RoxAnn" doesn't help, then there isn't much help at all. Being a customer for many years doesn't help if you really need help. Thanks, RoxAnn! UZOMBIE It is suggestions like LiquidCD that keep me coming back to MacUpdate! Thank you! I didn't know of that product. I had found Toast becoming bloated (much like Nero in the PC world) and with features I never use. I had purchased NTI Dragonburn some time ago and liked it, but again, developers tend to "over-estimate" user needs. (Version 7.1)
| Jun 30 2006 |
The "bloat" you state about Toast is due to the MANY MORE FEATURES available. LiquidCD is a simple burner - which is fine - but it has less than 25% of Toast's features. (Version 7.1)
| Jun 30 2006 |
DP-G4-450GUY Left off - LiquidCD is Tiger-only. Toast 7 allows the vast majority of Mac users who are still at Panther to use it. Roxio is a major company, and their support will be vastly superior to what the LiquidCD developer can supply. (Version 7.1)

ZWILLIAMS "The "bloat" you state about Toast is due to the MANY MORE FEATURES available." "LiquidCD is a simple burner - which is fine - but it has less than 25% of Toast's features." Please find something on Toast that I can't recreate without Toast. Those so called "MANY MORE FEATURES" are just bloated and often used extras. I can create data media, music media, video media, and copy and create disc images. So tell me of all these features missing? "Left off - LiquidCD is Tiger-only. Toast 7 allows the vast majority of Mac users who are still at Panther to use it." If you ignore the fact that you are forced to use a G4 or later, many of which Panther users do not have. "Roxio is a major company, and their support will be vastly superior to what the LiquidCD developer can supply." Sounds like someone is on the company payroll. I find it sad that LiquidCD which has only been out a fraction of the time is a better product and for free. (Version 7.1)

Why don't you say something positive instead of negative? Having a bad day, are wee? (Wee as in small reproductive organ) Oh wait, you are still on a G4...no wonder you like extra features...to run your machine slower. Anywhoo, Toast works very well. But for those that want other options, LiquidCD, DragonBurn and others. Its about choice, Not about being ranted on by someone that might be better off STFU. (Version 7.1)
| Jul 2 2006 |
THEALLSEER Burn is also a good alternative to Toast. I prefer it over LiquidCD myself. The dev is super responsive, fixed a problem on intel machines within a day! (Version 7.1)

VEGGIEDUDE I have used Toast for many years, but only recently have I upgraded to Toast 7. It is great. It works flawlessly as have all other editions I have used. I had reservations about upgrading, especially now that I have a Intel iMac, and Toast is not Universal. But it doesn't seem to matter, it works very well, I can burn DVD's from DiVX files and create cool VCD's and all that good stuff. I think the price held me back, but now I think it is worth the price, rebate or no rebate. (Version 7.0.2)
