THE MAC DOC There is a crash which occurs in the latest version (5.0.11) which I can consistently reproduce. To my knowledge this only occurs under Snow Leopard (10.6.2). It does not occur on any of my Macs running Tiger (10.4.11). The crash happens under My Models when adding the Contact from the Address Panel. I have confirmed the crash on both a 1st generation Macbook as well as an Early 2009 Mac Mini, both of which run 10.6.2. However, it works just fine on a Dual 2.7GHz G5, so perhaps this is an Intel-only issue? I absolutely adore Mactracker and have used it for years, which is why I am bringing this to everyone's attention. Im sure the developer will squash this in no time. I was just wondering if anyone else can reproduce this crash. (Version 5.0.11)

PROKOS_J I would like to download this but it seems like a waste of bandwidth to download the entire database each time Apple releases a few new gadgets. Seems to me it would be more efficient to develop some sort of update package since that would invariably be only a few kilobytes in size. Just a suggestion. This is not the only transgression of this kind out there. Having to download a 100 MB UniveralBinary/Multiple Language software package to find out that only 50 MB of it are needed on my system
well, that's annoying. The answer in this time of multiple Apple systems running different processors and OSs in different countries is to have a selection, not jam every possible configuration into one package. I don't think that adding a download package for English only, one for PPC and one for Intel would be so difficult. Of course, I am not a software programmer. (Version 5.0.11)

SNOWWHITESICKETTE That has happened to my PPCs as well- Mactracker would launch, bounce a few times in the dock, then disappear quietly. At first. But it actually works very well on my PPCs. Using 5.0.10 on three PPCs, two G3s and a G4. I don't know if it is a coincidence, but it worked if I clicked the word Mactracker as it appeared in the top menu bar, when I tried to launch Mactracker. I've not seen the symptom come back after it opens properly once. Launches normally every time, on each machine now. (Version 5.0.10)

ILGAZ Isn't there a free developer to give hand to this great freeware and its author? I feel bad when I download 22 MB of data each time when something gets added/updated. Can't be anything like rsync or plain patching (e.g. xdelta) implemented so users actually download 22 mb of data when they really need to replace the executable? I bet the actually changed data is far more less, compare the firefox "check for updates" updating and the old fashion full version downloading if you want to see how big difference patching would make. I mean, even Blizzard does patching and as far as I know, there is no risk patching the data files. Thanks to MPAA/RIAA, P2P doesn't really seem to be an option anymore. I mean evil ISPs out there filtering everything and sending letters to GNU/Linux downloaders. So, if anyone say "or he can ship a torrent", it is not the case. ps: I don't know the author or the company behind it, I just feel bad wasting bandwidth for no reason. (Version 5.0.7)

ONTHESCREEN NAME This great app allows you to find out what, when, plus a lot more on Apple Mac, previous Clone Macs, peripherals and devices. New Apple products can get updated into the list, too! Essential in previewing what a certain Mac needs (RAM Type/configuration/etc.) and will be like (Start-up sound, screen resolution, ports, plus much more info), and to compare, check and reference all the vintage and latest Mac computers, peripherals and devices like the iPod family. Definitely worth having around in your own Mac Library. Because even though you may be able to get all of this information online somewhere, it may be scattered over several sites, and maybe you will need to view the library offline, nicely and well. Great history comments also! (Version 5.0.6)

BRUCE_Y Yes, MacTracker X is a great resource for all the different Mac models. In the version of MacTracker I am looking at, there are links to manuals and support pages listed on the last "Notes" tab. Admittedly, it takes you to an Apple page which lists manuals for several releases but are for the selected Mac model. So perhaps finer-grained links. Might be worth a direct feedback to ian@mactracker.ca. Another great Hardware and model info resources tool is the EveryMac site at www.everymac.com. (Version 5.0.4)

CEILING CAT Does exactly what it says, and does it well. The only criticisms I can think of are related to adding a new machine - it seems a little hit-&-miss: i) if you don't input warranty dates (for example, after purchasing a second-hand "antique") then it doesn't show up on any of the Warranty watchlists; ii) there's no sense that you're saving the data you've entered, which is compounded by the issue i). I have two CRT iMacs, and while it was obvious to me that they should be considered as out of warranty, I had to make up a fictitious warranty expiry date in order to have them display properly. FAHLMAN The current version of xCode do not compile 10.2.x compatible code with it's standard install. Not to mention 10.2.x was released in August 2002 and is no longer updated by Apple. Anyone who is still using Jaguar but who's computer is capable of running Panther (built-in USB) or Tiger (Built-in FireWire) would be advised to upgrade for the increased stability, continued updates, and additional features. BRUCE_Y Re users of 10.2.x Jaguar -- I have upgraded several older g3 macs to 10.3.x Panther. The noticeable improved Finder speed, UI speed, greater stability and increased capacity (as well as Apple Support) make the Panther upgrade a Strong Recommendation. If your machine is not as recent, I would pass on Tiger because of its high cpu and disk requirements for background indexing (Spotlight). TAKAAKI This is made with RealBasic. Not Xcode. It'll take some time to port to Xcode or wait for RealBasic to release a version capable of making universal binaries. The latter option is better because, by using Xcode, this app loses cross-platform. The dev needs to prepair for diffrent code bases for diffrent platform. Also, this kind of small app doesn't get much benefit from being universal. Performance isn't an issue for most users. (Version 4.0.6)

TOMCAT This is certainly not an ordinary application, but what a great one: elegant, uncluttered interface, extensive database, tons of info, easy to use... what more could anyone ask for? This application is totally incredible. I was able to find the info for my old Mac in two seconds and displayed stuff like the type of processor, the graphics (2MB VRAM!), and other useful info including a little history paragraph. In addition, you can search, of course, it lets you change the window style between Aqua and Brush Metal, you can set color label to certain products (like in the Finder), it's fast and it borrows the album and smart albums icons from iPhoto; yes, Mactracker even supports Smart Categories: you can define stuff for more than 120 criteria! For example, you may want to create a category for this year's products (Date Introduced contains 2005). A minor few suggestions to the developer, though: -Make the search results appear as you type. -Maybe add a preview pane at bottom of the list, Mail-like, instead of having to double-click to view the product. -Better view of the labels (Finder-like: with shadows and round) -Easier way to set color labels (contextual menu, right from a list.) And please, please, please... keep it free! (Version 4.0b1)

JOEL NELSON If you have ever wondered about the specifications of previous Mac systems, clones, or system software, or wonder what is new in the systems newer than yours, try MacTracker. It presents information on Apple systems since the first 1984 Macintosh. Hear the startup chimes, see a picture, learn the maximum Mac OS supported, view the maximum expandable RAM, etc. A Mac fan can spend hours just browsing this program. (Version 2.1)

MAXIMUS Thank you Ian Page for writing this program. Simply wonderful to have all the Apple computer line in one handy-to-use program. Not only that but Ian frequently keeps MacTracker updated to include the latest and greatest. I love the tidbits of information that are included for each model as well. Thanks again. DAMIEN BARRETT I teach Mac OS and Mac OS X Troubleshooting classes in NYC, both for Apple and for my employer. MacTracker is one of the first applications I show to my students. It's incredibly helpful to help identify different models of Macs. Its ease-of-use and thoroughness is exceptional. (Version 2.0.4)

PSIKINESIS The GUI is cleaned up, the app is more responsive, the database is great, and even more content is provided. Finally, this app has hit the maturity that it needed. This is a wonderful update. I'm glad to see that there is a truly worthy database out there. Thanks a lot for the update to Mactracker. It kicks butt. (Version 2.0)
