SHARPIEEE  in recent days there have been several new sound editors to show up for Mac, but i still find myself using Amadeus II constantly. i haven't tried Pro yet although i mean to.

amadeus II has a great feature set, a stable and solid interface with plenty of intuitive controls, and the price tag is reasonable.

LSK8  More of a question: I have seen this used by musicians to record their performances and edit them; can i use it to take sections of a track ( like from sec. 21-sec. 45 of a particular song) from my mac computer-stored music (iTunes) to compile a cd of my own with fades in between? are there better programs for this? This is for a dance type performance. It is just hard to find out what this program does, exactly, and if it will do what I want. Thx.

VEGGIEDUDE  Amadeus could be used for such purpose, but ideally you'd want a multitrack editing program. I use Amadeus whenever possible, but for heavy duty work, I use Apple's Soundtrack which comes included with Final Cut Studio.

JTARHEEL  I use it for transferring vinyl to digital. Amadeus allows me to remove a lot of annoying sounds.

Also great for editing ringtones.

On ocassion when I need to get someone some sound effects, Amadeus helps with editing the effects.

Well worth the money.

MACSWEEP  Been using Amadeus about 4 years. It's getting better, but, I must say though, Sound Studio is better for *editing*. With Amadeus the user cannot easily play over and over again a selected portion of a sound. Sound Studio will play only the selected portion as many times as the user wants. However Sound Studio is more than twice as expensive and does not have as many features as Amadeus including some denoising features. Amadeus needs easier denoising abilities.

ANONYMOUS  This small sound editor is a real save time.

Beats hand down the clunky Audacity.

5 stars.

TRISTAN P  Beats the crap out of 'Sound Studio'; great for rough-and-ready audio restoration. And 'Amadeus' has AU and VST support, which, amazingly, 'Sound Studio' *still* doesn't have (and won't for a while, apparently). What year is this again?

'Amadeus' has a very useful interpolation feature which can remove *huge* pops from defective recordings once you isolate the impulse waveform.

Very intuitive app to use. Great stuff.

ANONYMOUS  Martin has fixed a glitch in the waveform display that I encountered in v.3.8.3. Specifically, if I had a waveform mostly expanded (which is done using Cmd-G) and then tried to contract it using the keyboard command (Cmd-Shift-G), the waveform would continue to expand, to the maximum. As I said, this has been fixed in 3.8.4.

This is a wonderful program--well worth the shareware fee. The relatively new "Change Pitch and Speed" dialog is terrific. I can adjust recordings to concert pitch and alter the playback speed, which is perfect for teaching music students.

BRUCEY  Update notes for v 3.8.4

"Version 3.8.4 is now officially available, with several (mostly Tiger-oriented) improvements:

- Fixes a display bug in Tiger

- Fixes a bug that would prevent settings for VST plugins to be saved

- Supports the Apple CAF and AAC/ADTS formats (MacOS 10.3 + QuickTime 7 required)

- Supports the mp4 and m4a formats (MacOS 10.4 required)

Since it also fixes a bunch of minor bugs, it is however a recommended upgrade for all

users, even those who aren't using Panther or Tiger yet... Enjoy!

JOHN PROKOS  Excellent software for once in a while sound editing. I need something simple to use without a bunch of confusing proprietary lingo and one year learning curve. This is easy to use, fast, high quality and inexpensive. I have been using it for the last three years and like it.

MATT  This is the most intuitive audio editor I have ever used. Unfortunatly, it doesn't seem to get along with Logic 6.4.3. After installing the demo for Amadeus (and feeling pretty good about finding such an amazing app) Logic crashed repeatedly. I tried to repair permissions, but my G4 powerbook (10.3.8) froze up and then had a kernal panic. This is not at all common for me. So, I deleted Amadeus and all was well with Logic, and my Mac. Just for good measure, I reinstalled Amadeus and gave logic another try. It crashed within five minutes. I really wish the author would fix the compatability problems. I would have gladly paid for this app. On the plus side, the app itself seems quite stable, but it will get no points for stability from me because it doesn't play well with others.

ANONYMOUS  The app simply keeps crashing all the time when started as it cannot see the developers site. The site also seems to be down and has been for a few days.

It would be even better if the problem/s where fixed much quicker.

PHILIP  I've never had any problem with this software or the developer's site. Any questions I've had have been answered promptly and couteously. This is a very high value product and am glad to use it. There are many simpler apps out there that are for free, but his has great depth and power.

ANONYMOUS  Amadeus II is a great an invaluable tool for the true archivist. I record DAT>Amadeus II with ease, and alllows for FLAC exporting.

It has deinite time saving steps for archiving and is a very stable progam.

It will even allow to edit and split flacs.

It recognized my 3rd party audio card for record, but did not recognize it for playback. (M-Audio Audiophie 192).

Further recommendations for future releases:

1. fingerprint capability of flac files.

2. more support foor 3rd party audio cards

3. Faster editiing features. Something that allows all the edits to be saved at the end rather each time an editing task is performed.

-JOHN  Recently at our company we needed to get some sound software to edit our raw recording. We where using SoundTrack for sequencing but needed a handy tool for MP3 compression, noise removal, and other adjustments.

We looked at all-in-ones costing over 800 and settled on Amadeus due to it's ease of noise reduction and MP3 output.

I use Amadeus at home for all my sound editing needs.

BODO  The Sound-View-Windows behaving a little snappier, but the strangest thing: if converting an aif-File to MP3 with excellent setting, it takes three-Times lom´nger than with amadeus II 3.72. But the lame-plugin seem's to have the same versionnumber (3.96). Also the Time-Left-Display when ripping is inaccurate.

The ability for multitasking is still unincisive.

If you load more than one file at a time, the whole computer turns to gradualness (G5 with 2,5 GB RAM).

Symptoms are the same as in the 3.8 BETA.

I'm using Amadeus now for 4 Years, but so far i'm a litte disapointed with this release. Maybe I had exoected too much?!

PS.: Two Years ago the developer was very responsive and prying of the things one had to say (maybe me?) - but the reply to my last e-mail with accurate descriptions of whats happen was in the way:

Not the program done it wrong, it's me:/

FUNNELLPD  I’m a registered Amadeus II user. Amadeus excels at every task I throw at it — editing MP3s, ripping and cleaning audio from vinyl and recording audio from every application imaginable (the Finder, RealPlayer, etc.) in conjunction with Jack OS X. Developer is very responsive to queries. I couldn’t ask for more.

ANONYMOUS  When I work with Amadeus over the network, i.e., I have Amadeus on my machine but the sound files are on a server, it leaves orphaned tmp files in the folder which I can't delete as they are 'being used', even after Amadeus has been quit for a while.

Another thing. if it is playing, and you go to save, it keeps on playing while it is saving, but that's pretty minor.

Great program though.

AUBREY  The developer released a revised 3.7.1 on February 2 without updating the version number. This version fixed a bug which caused Amadeus to lock up under specific circumstances. The developer has always been and continues to be very responsive to issues and I use the program all the time for my projects... it is great.

If you updated to 3.7.1 before Feb 2, my suggestion is to do so again.

CRAIG  I have been using this app to copy sermon tapes to MP3 for some time now. It's great because I can shorten dead spots and other edits if needed. Also had a song on a CD that iToons created two tracks (that way on the CD) but the tracks play together. So I put the two songs together with Amadeus, and all is well.

MARTIN OBRIST  Amadeus 3.7.1 just got even more usefull! Recording old records to harddisks and editing them is a snap. Conversion to/from mp ogg or what ever included. Spectrogram views are displayed and scrolled smoothly. As I'm into ultrasound bioacoustics, there's still some space for additions, e.g. labelling of spectrogram frequency axis, storage of time/frequency readouts, ability to correct for slow-downed recordings. But apart from those rather exotic quests - my most useful and versatile sound-tool on OSX! Thanks!

WAYNE  Excellent app and well worth it! It has incredible spectrum and sonogram displays that I use when I just have to find some annoying hum or something. It's worth the price of admission for that feature alone.

It also has the most flexible and best-sounding MP3 compression of the programs I've tried.

DANSROKA  A great audio product. Full featured and easy to use. I love the file splitting feature. I have a bunch of old tapes from the early 80s I made of my favorite old radio station. With Amadeus, I record the whole tape into one file, then mark up the individual songs, and in one step export them to MP3s. Love it.

ATANASOFF  This is a really nice little sound app that does everything that I need to do and more. I think it's better than similar apps such as Sound Studio in that it supports VST plug-ins and encodes to MP3. In the future I'd like to see multi-tracking. Thanks for the excellent work, Martin!

ANONYMOUS  I am pleased to see they have finally fixed a lot of the interface issues that were annoying in the earler ones. It is now quite easy to see what part of the soundwave you are editing.

Now what I would like to see is an integration of the floating palets into an editable toolbar. There is really no need for floating palets.

KLAUSKINSKI  Very useful MP3-Sound-Editor! Awsome! •

This is the coolest Mac-SoundEditor that opens and saves MP3 files (!) directly for editing and converting -- and not only AIFFs that must be reconverted manually etc. It knows all important formats and has all sound filters you need (fading, pitching etc.)! I like it more than Macromedia's SoundEdit and more than SoundStudio from felttip.com, because Amadeus II can handle MP3 files directly. The shareware price is worth it and much cheaper than SoundEdit 16 v2!!! Get it! (-:
