BADABING  Once there was a little tool (don't know the name anymore) to active the docks "single-application" mode in Tiger (clicking on an app icon in the dock activates that app and its windows while automatically hiding the windows of all the other apps) is it possible to integrate that in TinkerTool?

That's an easy way to prevent window clutter, I've been looking for that feature for a long time but can't remember the apps name.

I think it would be a very useful enhancement for TinkerTool.

Oh, ...and thank you for TinkerTool.

MSWFUJOWDFFYC  iTunes

Some time ago I used the "Terminal" to link the iTunes-Arrows to the Library. After starting this app and displaying the iTunes-Section: it reversed my handmade-change (without asking). Now, the arrows are linking to the store again... enough reason for me to trash-it as untrustworthy. Sorry.

HOTFUSION  I believe the reason the option to "disable checksum on dmgs" is grayed out on Mac OS 10.5 systems is because you can now do that through Disk Utility.

Launch Disk Utility and go to Preferences under the Disk Utility menu.

ROBOGOBO  I'm duplicating my review of Tinkertool System here, because this review is developer/support related. After using Tinkertool System for a few months, I did weekly maintenance and ran all the recommended processes religiously. Two weeks ago, after doing the same thing I did before, I experienced constant kernel crashes and freezes immediately following a Tinkertool session. I spent a few days trying to troubleshoot. I'm a moderately experienced user, so I did all the standard stuff- Diskwarrior, fsck, memtest, etc. All found nothing. I do regular backups using CCC, and so I cut my losses, saved my client data and cloned my hard drive from the last backup before Timkertool tinkered too much. That was three days ago, and no more problems.

Now, I'm sure Tinkertool is a good program, but the worst part came when I contacted the developer, Marcel Bresnik. He insisted kernel crashes are only caused by hardware problems, and called me a liar when I said my crashlogs were naturally reverted when I cloned from a backup, and would be of no use in troubleshooting. I asked for a refund, but then told him he could keep his $10 if it was too big a deal, to show him I wasn't lying to rip him off, and I would simply give honest feedback on Versiontracker. So there it is. And it's a shame, because it's probably a good program that needs improvement in a few areas, and the developer just happens to be a defensive ass. Oh well, back to Butler.

TIAGO  I'm with KKNOPP on this one...

And although we're a bunch of gravediggers here (OP more than 1 year old), after reading your (legitimate) complaint, I had to check the 2 replies to help me figure why you had a -6 rating. As I see it, if the rating system worked as it should, your comment should have a very positive rating, since you're giving real/useful feedback... Instead, what we see is some useless reviews receiving very positive ratings, just for stating that "TinkerTool rocks!" or "Transmission is the best!". This is sad...

Anyway, thanks for your post... It was useful to me...

There are so many great products out there, that we should all learn to avoid developers with a bad attitude...

MacMelo

P.S.

Regarding the rating system, I don't think there's anything wrong with the way it's implemented... It works as it should... The problem is just that it's too easy for fanboys (and dishonest developers) to glorify or bury the posts that please/annoy them...

ROBOGOBO  Well thanks guys for coming to my defense. I haven't been back here since I originally wrote the review, and I think the rating system is just another silly thing that every review site has these days. I usually just ignore them. The smiley faces are a bit unclear, though, I just tried to mod you guys up and hit the wrong one, and you can't go back. So maybe you can give each other a star and even it out. Sorry about that.

Regarding Tinkertool, I went back to using Cocktail, and it's really just as good. I have no hard feelings toward Mr Bresnik. I just think he's a hardheaded German with a killer app that has a couple problems. He did offer me my money back in the end, but I passed. I hoped that made my point clearer. Anyway the reason it didn't get along with my system is unclear. It was a brand new install on a new Mac Pro, with not even a tick since uninstalling TT. So.

68KMLA  If you set the finder option to 'show invisible and system files', work with some files, then turn it off again, it seems to make whole folders full of files disappear.

3 folders, each with between 8-30 jpg files in them. They all showed up as folders with 'No Items' in the Finder with hidden files turned off, but when I re-enabled hidden files with TinkerTool, they showed the files I knew were there.

These files were not modified in any way, other than being moved between partitions.

This has me very worried now, as I have to leave hidden files enabled or else possibly trash files that I didn't know were there.

How would they get the 'hidden' property on their own?

The filenames didn't have a dot in front or anything, and I have not run setfile on any of them.

Help!

ANONYMOUS  Some weeks ago all of my icons disappeared from the desktop but they were still accessible though a finder window in the sidebar. After running through a number of diagnostic activities trying to get my desktop back, including starting up with a new identity, to confirm that it was a user problem , I downloaded and used this software which fixed the problem on the very first try. Based on earlier dialog with this developer I can also say that he is very responsive to questions, etc. about his software.

AMAKE  I love the app. I've been using it for years. My one nitpicky complaint has actually very little to do with the app. I hate it when downloads are offered as gzipped disk images. Why not just use the dmg's internal compression? Then I only have to deal with one file instead of two. You can do this easily in the Terminal by using the command hdiutil create -imagekey zlib-level=9 -srcfolder $SOURCE $TARGET

MR. X  FINALLY an effective way to "kill" the Dock (yes, I'm a Dock-hater...). Just select the "top" position and unless you stick your mouse for like a second right at the lower end of the menubar (which is not so easy to do by accident, yes!) you won't see this annoying piece of junk that Steve seems to be in love with...

My second fav is the "disable sound effects" for the Finder. :)

Gotta love the screenshot file format option, the scroll arrows together at both ends.

One feature that sounded really cool doesn't work for me though: "disable native PDF support" for Safari doesn't do anything on my particular set-up. I'll try to find out why later.

Still amazingly useful piece of freeware though!!!

THANK YOU!

ASMEURER  Yeah, killing the dock gets rid of the application switcher, which is the only useful thing about it use Quicksilver or the like. The PDF thing is for Tiger only. It keeps the PDFs from opening in the Safari window. It probably won't work if you use Adobe Reader's Safari PDF viewer either. Can't say for sure since I use Panther.

ANONYMOUS  This person is more than just a genius. I just discovered a way to "kill" the Dock with this program. First, shrink the Dock down to its lowest size. Then use Tinker Tool to locate the dock to the top and center. It will show up if you enlarge the Dock again, but in its tiny state, it doesn't seem to pop down from behind the menu bar. Works great on other things, too. Thanks.

ANONYMOUS  Dude, if you think the EULA below is scary, you need to re-read the EULAs for most of the web sites you visit. The EULA here is pretty typical and not scary. EVERYBODY tracks you by your IP address. I"ll bet MacUpdate does too. Many of these EULAs also say that they are not tracking personally identifiable information like your name. For instance, if you ran a web site and you wanted some stats about what platforms and browsers visited your site, and what parts of the world, you too would be gathering "aggregate non-personal information." YOUR OWN EULA would have to look like this one and most of the ones on the Web.

The point is, either you realize how typical and non-remarkable the quoted paragraph below is, OR YOU MUST STOP using the Web now, because you can clearly not accept what most Web site are doing for statistical purposes.

BRUCEY  Quitting Finder is actually quite useful - it clears up various occasional temporary user interface issues.

In OS X, the Finder is an application like all other programs, so this is different than under OS 9 days. (In fact some people use alternative programs and don't run the Finder much at all)

You may have noticed (or not) the Finder sometimes quits and restarts on its own when it runs into trouble (as after many hours of running, or after much file copying, maintenance,etc.).

With the Quit Finder feature, you can gracefully force the Finder to restart itself in situations where some of the icons start to look weird or get assigned wrong, or when the display names start looking ghostly. Or when an icon seems to be on the desktop, but you can't select it.

After quitting the Finder, it will restart itself when it is needed, or when you click on the square Mac-face icon on the left edge of the Dock.

So it is not as bad as you imagine. All the best.

SPAM ON TOAST  tinkertool was a 'must have' in the early days of OSX, but as apple have rolled more and more of its capabilities into the OS with subsequent releases, it's become less and less vital. nowadays it's probably a one or two trick pony at best, and each new version seems to exist as primarily as a 'new coat of paint' for the purpose of getting a mention in versiontracker and macupdate, rather than adding any new functions.

i guess this little app has reached the end of its useful life cycle.

ANONYMOUS  TinkerTool System isn't free.

It's pretty obvious that, intentionally or no, this free version is an executable advertisement. Its periodic updates gain a MacUpdate listing, and help direct people to the paid-for version.

Free advertising for a commercial product? Abuse of MacUpdate?

It's not that I disagree with making money off support - just that I don't take well to misplaced advertising.

LONNIE  Their are plenty of Commercial software updates on MacUpdate so the last comment has no real point.

This version of TInkerTool is free, and it is listed that way. It's not one of the many commercial apps on here that list themselves as ShareWare when you really do not get full working functions until paying unlike traditional ShareWare apps.

TinkerTool is still helpful to me and I always have the OS as up to date as possible. This is a minor release that STATES nothing has changes except the Japenese issue.

I always enjoy someone who comes in and complains about an app for personal reasons and then leaves no name or email.

No, actually, it's not. Your choices are "At top and bottom" and "Together".

At top and bottom: there is one arrow at each end - i.e. the up/left arrow at the top/left end of the scroll bar, the down/right arrow at the bottom/right end of the scroll bar.

Together: both arrows are at the bottom or right end of the scroll bar.

So, thanks for your comment. Might I suggest that next time, you take the time to find out what you're talking about actually does?

ANONYMOUS  I'm not sure what motivated this change, but I'm really disappointed that it's an app now instead of a preference pane. My applications folder is crowded enough – put it back in system preferences, where it belongs.

I'm sticking with the old version that's still a preference pane, even if it doesn't have as many features.

ANONYMOUS  why not stick it in the Utilities folder in Applications? i think that would be the best way to organize it.

RJ NORRIS  not a review of the app, per se, so i will refrain from a rating, but if you do the following: enable "expose" to "desktop" mode, have itunes playing on a secondary monitor under panther with an nvidia card, trigger the "all windows" expose, and then try to switch to the desktop, all of aqua will crash mightily. requires a hard reset. like i said, not a ding against tinkertool... but it does serve to point out that you should be careful about enabling features that apple didn't enable on their own.

JUSTIN  Great app. I prefer that it's an application again instead of a prepane too. Very useful to turn on hidden OS X features. I use the add Quit Menu item to Finder on most macs I set up and personally, since I deal with a lot of Unix files, I use it to show all the hidden files in finder windows. Lots of other useful stuff too. Check it out, it's free (Thanks!) and also includes a way to restore everything to the OS defaults so you don't have to worry about not being able to change things back.

ROBERT CAILLIAU  For Dana Sutton and other Americans: the license panel is not only in German; for once the English is just a bit lower down... ;-)

VENUS  Installed it last night and shut down. This morning my iMac just wouldn't startup. Only got a grey screen. Rebooted 3 times but still grey screen. Had to boot up in safe mode to reset to pre-Tinkertool state and only managed to startup my iMac again.

Not sure what happened but couldn't really review this if it does not allow me to startup my machine.

Maybe next time :) Used version 2 before and loved it! Keep up the good work in future versions.

NEWBIES  by holding down the Shift key as the Mac boots up... then let go of the Shift key when you see the normal Mac OS X 'starting up' window, it will state that you are in Safe Mode.

it's totally elementary, where have you been?

DANA SUTTON  As great as ever. For some wierd reason the license document you have to look and agree to as part of the installation is in German. Fear not, the app. it itself is in English.

CYBERGOOBER  Great, as always. Anonymous-

Quote from description at the top of this page:

"TinkerTools allows you to customize the look of Mac OS X's Aqua interface. You can have translucent terminal windows, **modify the trash can's icon**, display all hidden files, and more."

ANONYMOUS  TinkerTool features vary depending on which OS version you have, but there's no mention about changing the trash icon, where did you see that. bdog? The only item similar is allowing moving the trash icon from the dock, but only with 10.1.x

JH  Other customization apps come and go, but TinkerTool has earned a permanent place on my Macs...as a PrefPane, as an application, whatever. A question to other users: has anybody else got the menu-shortcut feature working? I'm sure the problem is with me rather than TT, but I can't seem to get it running.

Seems very stable.

ABBOTT  I installed it on two 10.2.8 systems. Worked fine on my PowerBook, but hoses the icons in some circumstances on my Quicksiler. What happened on Quicksilver was that when I moved any icon, it became invisible. The fix: go into your user library Preferences folder, delete com.apple.finder.plist and redo your Finder preferences. Now everything's fine again.

Disabling Finder fading menus (or ability to control the fading time). They're a waste of time for OS X users with slow Macs!

ACRAPPA  Good work, though it's features aren't quite as many as when it was first release. I understand the software's purpose though (it enables features that are built into the OS; they aren't being programmed by the developer), and that limits things a bit.
