MACUS Crashes on launch. I don't have Dragthing installed or running. (Version 10.0.1)

FILCHESCAT This is truly a rip-off which I unfortunately bought into last year. When version 10 came out a year ago, it would constantly give an error message when launched. SmithMicro never responded to repeated requests for help, nor with information on getting a refund. This new version not only continues with the same error message, it now installs something in the system library that presumably tracks days since last used and wants an admin level password. The un-install doesn't even work - had to track down the little devil in the library and manually trash it before it stopped asking for permission to use keychain. No thanks. (Version 10.0.1)

BEZBOZNY Just to continue my previous report. I managed to find the source of the problem. When dragthing is open then spring cleaning quits immediatelly on launch while when the dragthing is not open it works. (Version 10.0.1)

FLASH1296 Search for Leopard Cache Cleane, File Buddy, and MacPilot. With these available there is certainly NO NEED for this buggy - underperforming - absurdly overpriced -software. (Version 9.1.1)

D9 Wow! They're still trying to push this schlock?! At $50?!! I guess someone is fighting for their job security over at Aladdin...oops... Allume. Like other posts have stated, go get yourself the free and more frequently updated software solutions out there that do this. (Version 9.1.1)

PALADINO This chronically buggy piece of crap is brought to you by the same folks who bring you Internet Cleanup, another chronically buggy piece of crap. I've used both, on and off since their inception, and have rarely experienced smooth going. I've now washed my hands of both of them. UGGHHH!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!! First there was Aladdin which was taken over by Allume, and now it's Smith-Micro that owns these horrible apps. And none of the three had/has a clue how to make SC and IC work well. Both Spring Cleaning and Internet Cleanup should be given a decent burial, and then, perhaps, rewritten from the ground up by developer's who really know what they're doing.

JIMW When Aladdin initially came out with this product many years I purchased it, given Aladdin stellar reputation at the time with such products as Stuffit combined with great support. What a mistake as this product was rotten at its core. Aladdin's attempt to fix this product slightly improved the interface but never address its basic problem which was it simply never worked properly. Personally I believe that this product contributed significantly to Aladdin's demise. In any case I eventually gave up on it and got rid of it - a decision that I have never had any remorse about doing. If you subscribe to the concept that past history is a reasonable predictor of future results, I would suggest staying away from this product given its history, its current developer and previous reviews. The only way I would consider revisiting this product, even in a demo mode is if the developer emphatically stated that they threw away the entire previous code base and started over from scratch, retaining only its name. Even then I would be suspicious. As for alternatives, I would take a look at Onyx and Applejack for free system cleanup products. For drive cleanup and organization I have found File Buddy hard to beat. As for optimization, Mac's don't really need need it. However if you must, I find the best technique is to back up your data files and apps to an auxiliary disk; do an erase and clean install and then restore your file. An auxiliary drive generally will cost no more than software designed to do this and it has the added advantage that it can also be used for automatic daily backups. (Version 9.0)

ED@MAC Recently bought Spring Cleaning 8 at the Mall of America Apple Store. Wish I had read the MacUpdate reviews of Spring Cleaning 7 first. Same problems on my PowerBook G4 with OSX 10.4.6. I could live with the non-Mac interface, if the program worked as advertised. But it doesn't. First, "Duplicates Finder" was very slow; then after over an hour grinding way, it froze and had to be forced to quit. Same thing happened when repreated without searching packages: slow then crashed before listing duplicates or processing anything. Almost 3 hours wasted - that's why I am taking the time to warn others. Image finder didn't crash, but didn't identify images that were attachments to Mail messages. Music finder seemed to work, but gave no feedback if it had successfully imported MP3 files into iTunes - and it imported duplicates. It would have been easier to open two Finder windows and just drag and drop the files. Spring Cleaning was so buggy that I was afraid to try Universal Slimmer. Don't waste you time or money with Spring Cleaning 8. (Version 7.0.1)

M3L4NIE I also HATE this software. I purchased it to clean up my hard drive. After installing Tiger, my Photoshop 7 acted up, which appears to be a common problem. It would take Spring Cleaning 3+ hours to scan the handful of megs on my HD, then it would take an additional 3+ hours to uninstall it. I had to do this several times to get all the Photoshop pieces off my machine. In total, it took me a week! Who has a week?? Not me. Uninstalled Spring Cleaning and will write own program instead. To add insult to injury, my rebate was denied - they didn't like the previous version# of my last anti-virus software. Too bad. A deal is a deal. If you only accept certain version #s, list them on the offer. Will not do business with mcafee/allume again. (Version 7.0.1)

ANONYMOUS Thank God, I managed to put in a refund before the 30 days was up. No hassles on getting a refund and that is a good plus for the company. I will always keep them in mind if I'm looking for future products, due to their customer satisfaction policy. However, the program is not worth $49. I purchased it mainly to uninstall applications. I does a fair job of this, however, it doesn't uninstall all applications. Uninstall a font manager and watch your ui get real goofy. The other handful of utilities in the package are quite useless. I was hoping that the font handler in the program would fix font problems, but, it doesn't. I might pay $5 for the uninstaller, as it is, without all the other stuff -- if the program included a database of applications (with an auto updater) that lets you know which programs it can uninstall (verified by actual testing) without resulting in problems. MARC GRAY I have NOW updated to S.C. 7.0 and I have no complaints at all However, the 7.0.1 updater does NOT work. It simply fails to launch. I repaired permissions, rebooted and tried again. Nothing! I even re-downloaded a fresh copy. Nada ! (Version 7.0.1)

DEGREEN Four times I have tried to upgrade and I keep getting the message that Spring Cleaning 7.0.1 can't find the Spring Cleaning plug ins(which are sitting in the right place) and I am told to download again and again. No response from Allume. I don't like the chances of getting a refund. (Version 7.0.1)

ARCHINAUT Thanks. For some reason, I always attribute poor performance to pilot error. I tried SC6 and was left scratching my head, wondering WTF I did to so thoroughly screw-up this app. Glad to hear it comes pre-screwed. (Version 6.0)

BURT YELLEIGH TRASH! BAD! DANGER! one of the worst apps i have ever seen. amoung other things, it labeled many prefs as beign orphened that were not and diagnosed files as dameged that were not. this app is potentially VERY DANGEROUS! it can do far worse that the afore mentioned. i would throw it out, even if you were unfortunate enough to pay for it. ANONYMOUS I have tried to get tech support on SC6 from Aladdin for more than 2 weeks now - TO NO AVAIL! So I decided to just forget it and asked them for a refund - NO REACTION, either. Aladdin is going downhill fast. Their product quality leaves a lot to be desired (e.g. StuffIt 8 bugs) and CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS NON-EXISTANT! (Version 6.0)

ANONYMOUS Unstable useless crap! Quits unexpectedly all the time, installs 2 useless menu extras, creates problems with contextual menus... The app itself is _that_ unstable/unreliable, how could I trust it to do reliable system maintenance like uninstalling etc.? (Version 6.0)

ANON Aladdin should be ashamed of charging people to upgrade to the Mac OS 10.2 version of this software. THey are developers and should have known better than to release a bundled version with the Mac OS X Installer package that was sent out as recently as two months ago. I hope others that have already shelled out the money to upgrade to Jaguar are just as miffed as I am. (Version 5.0.1)
