DGOMBAU Warning. Tried to download a TV episode tonight, to watch tonight. Not an unreasonable expectation, since my verified download cable connection is 12mps. But whoa - the HD version quoted a FOUR HOUR download. Even the SD version at 530 MB was a one-hour D/L. At 12mbs it SHOULD take 6 minutes, not 60. I tried stopping and reconnecting over a 40 minute period, just in case there was heavy demand. But no, it stayed the same. Seems that iTunes servers are running at dial-up speed. Not unreasonably I emailed iTunes Support and asked for my $2.99 to be refunded, since even the SD version will be way to late to watch. Will let you know the Apple response. But I am not holding my breath. (Version 9.0.2)

SKYNET Im not sure if I am the only one who has spotted these problem with the iTunes wish list I have also emailed Apple about the problem and they said they are working to solve the problem, but are not sure when the problem will be solved. So here is the issue
the wish list only displays 25 songs. If you go over 25 songs it goes onto a second page. Well on the second page you cannot delete any songs from that page (using the X on the side) also if you delete one song from the first page you have to reload your wish list in order to delete another song. I also noticed that if you have an Album in your wish and press the quick view option in the right bottom corner of the album cover art it will only bring up a blank screen and not display the songs listed on the album for you to review. I was hoping this new iTunes update would correct these issues I have been having but it has not. This is the first time I have been disappointed by Apple and brings back memories of the problems with PCs. Has anyone else encountered these problems listed above or others? (Version 9.0.2)

DR. GIRLFRIEND Dark grid view is a welcome (and overdue) improvement. It seems as if the light grid view has also been tweaked a bit -- the font seems bold(er) and the background's blinding whiteness has been reduced. I'd still like to see more GUI customization options, in the List View, for example; I'd prefer a darker (or non-white) interface throughout. Come on, Apple! Can't you trust us to choose our own colors? I don't think that's too much to ask. No problems so far on OSX 10.6.1 (Version 9.0.2)

KENBOTWINICK Don't you mean "breaking it again", since no other green MAXIMIZE button in any other program makes the window SMALLER. They're breaking their own UI Guidelines. The MAXIMIZE button should MAXIMIZE the window. If anything would make sense at all, it would be using the yellow MINIMIZE button to MINIMIZE the window to the MINI controller. Logic and rationality lose again. (Version 9.0.1)

PJM Consistency mongers be damned: thanks be to Apple for reverting back to the behaviour that many of us have used since the dawn of time.
| Sep 23 2009 |
STAR-AFFINITY @KENBOTWINICK Well, since there's no consistency in how the zoom button works in other apps (it doesn't always maximize and restore in other apps) I don't see the big deal in having the zoom button switch to the mini player. At least that's better than how it was in iTunes 9.0 where it was behaving totally wacko. Since I for iTunes can see a point in having the window cover the entire screen (long album and song names for example) I think it would be OK if the zoom button in iTunes maximized the window and option-click switched to the mini player. Or maybe even have a separate button for switching to the mini player. (Version 9.0.1)
| Sep 23 2009 |
KENBOTWINICK @STAR-AFFINITY I agree that even when the button was supposed to maximize iTunes, it didn't actually do a full correct Zoom. I personally use SizeUp or Zooom/2 to maximize my windows anyway. To me a keyboard shortcut is always much faster and easier than having to take my hands off the keyboard, use the mouse, and hunt out a tiny, tiny little button. I just never understood the ridiculous backlash against fixing it. Was Command-Shift-M REALLY that hard to do? I'm pretty sure that for all Windows users the keyboard shortcut or menu pick has always been the only way to get the mini player. I believe the Windows Full Screen button in the title of the window actually makes iTunes full screen. (I use it at work on Windows, but haven't verified the behavior recently.) (Oh, and I agree with you about your suggestion of using Option-Green button). Anyways, out of all the thousands and thousands of apps available, which ones don't use the green button to Zoom the window? The only other one that immediately comes to mind is Safari, where it doesn't make sense to zoom to full width of screen. It makes more sense to zoom Safari the full height of the screen based on the width you have selected. But the zoom button still zooms the window bigger, even if not full screen. Regardless of the small number of examples you might be able to come up with, they're the exceptions and not the rule. The standard is that the green Zoom button is supposed to do the same thing as the Window Zoom menu pick and that is supposed to maximize the window to a larger size
And not to get all philosophical, but the reason it's so difficult to make changes to fix bigger problems in the world is because we always have to cater to emotional (and frequently irrational) desires to cling to the way things have always been done instead of being able to use rational logic to determine the best course of action for the future
I'm surprised people didn't hold town hall meetings about this green zoom button and bring pictures of Steve Jobs with a Hitler mustache and accuse him of wanting to euthanize Gramma

JONV Apple's guidelines say, "The user can toggle between the standard state and the user state by clicking the zoom button." So it's not a maximize button as many people think (a la Windows). And the "user state" is not defined by the guidelines; that's up to the developer. Since many users probably like the mini controller as their preferred way to control iTunes, it's perfectly reasonable and consistent to have the zoom button alternate between that state and a larger window. (Version 9.0.1)
| Sep 23 2009 |
STAR-AFFINITY @KENBOTWINICK and @JONV The problem was that the zoom button behavior in iTunes 9.0 didn't make sense. It's supposed to toggle between the standard state and the user state? iTunes 9 didn't do that, at least not in a way that it felt reasonable (I never understood it at least...). While not many, there are several apps that doesn't zoom the window to the entire screen when clicking the zoom button. Safari (as mentioned), Preview, Finder, Word, Photoshop to mention a few. Even if it doesn't always make sense to make the window cover the entire screen when clicking the zoom button, it's more consistent than the way it is now. At least I think it should be more clear to the user why it's behaving in a certain way (i.e. not zooming the window to cover the entire screen). This was absolutely not the case in iTunes 9.0. Also, just because you can zoom a window to the entire screen with one click doesn't mean you have to... One example of where it's unclear what the zoom button does in Safari: Look at Apple.com in Safari and have the window narrow enough to give you a horizontal scroll bar. Clicking the zoom button doesn't get rid of the scroll bar, which it should. This seems more related to the web browser engine since it also happens in other Webkit based browsers like OmniWeb, but still. It's confusing for the user. Safari can also behave strange if clicking the zoom button when a PDF is viewed using OS X's built-in PDF engine. Try looking at this PDF for example: PDF http://www.yellow-sunshine.com/speisekarte_A3_eng.pdf When I click the zoom button in Safari while viewing that the window just jumps to some seemingly random place on the screen! Would definitely make more sense to zoom to full screen there. Or - if not zooming full screen, make it easy to understand why the window zoom behaves the way it does. (Version 9.0.1)
| Sep 27 2009 |
KENBOTWINICK And this is why I now just use Size Up and Zooom/2 for my window resizing needs... ;) MercuryMover also looked kind of neat, but not neat enough to get my money. And I never even use the mini-player on the Mac. I use Synergy to control iTunes. The only place I use the mini-player is at work on Windows to easily control the volume of my Nicecast stream from my Mac. (Version 9.0.1)

I especially like the new Genius Mixes -- brilliant! At first, I couldn't figure out how to activate the darn thing. Then I found this article: http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/22371/ To activate "Genius Mix" in iTunes 9, select Update Genius" under iTunes' "Store" menu. Once the Apple Store gets back to you, you'll see a new entry underneath your Genius Library called, not surprisingly, Genius Mixes. I've been playing various Genius Mixes all day today, and have been really enjoying discovering and rediscovering my own music.

ILGAZ Apple has no reason to support FLAC. You should look for FLAC quicktime component and hope the drag drop of FLAC files works. There is a reason for iTunes linking to Quicktime framework you know. Apple had to go with their own lossless codec for a simple reason: Patent troll companies. FLAC is currently worry free but if World's largest media reseller and music player maker supports it, be sure those evil trolls will have their new juicy target. As they know Apple won't really stand to their bullshit too long, they have some sort of settlement guarantee. So, money is really guaranteed. Instead of 64bit support, I would question why wouldn't it link to Quicktime X instead of Quicktime and use (finally!) arrived GPU h264 acceleration under snow leopard. I don't see why everything and everything should be "pure" 133t 64bit while GPU gives some very important thing like, HD playback with 3-5% CPU usage. I have seen on Windows myself, on a Nvidia based Mini. (media player classic) It doesn't have some top end GPU either. (Version 9.0)
| Sep 10 2009 |
MISHA I think that's a poor excuse for not supporting FLAC. Yes, it can be done with tricks like Fluke but why should we have to deal with that? From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC "Free means that the specification of the stream format can be implemented by anyone without prior permission (Xiph.org reserves the right to set the FLAC specification and certify compliance), and that neither the FLAC format nor any of the implemented encoding/decoding methods are covered by any patent. It also means that the reference implementation is free software." And I'm only talking about supporting *decoding* of FLAC in iTunes. Apple didn't have to pay the Fraunhofer Institute royalties for decoding MP3, it had to pay them to license the *encoder*. There's a ton of FREE apps that can both *encode* and *decode* FLAC. Why can't iTunes just support decoding them... FLAC is the preferred format for live recordings which are generally free to distribute... I think Apple thought it could do uncompressed encoding better and produced ALE as a result. But we have to remember Apple doesn't always hit home runs. Even they were smart enough to kill the iPod Hi-Fi and acknowledge they can't make speakers like the real guys can. (Version 9.0)

DOUG S. I have to say this is the reason I don't pay too much attention to MacUpdate ratings. The functionality has been improved. There are new features. It's faster and more stable. It adds some things that have been heavily requested by the community... And they change the color on one piece and people give it a 1/5 even though aesthetics isn't part of the rating system. I agree I prefer the darker color scheme but you know what? It's personal taste. As a designer I can look at it and go, "It's nice but I would have gone a different way." It's now closer to the design of some of their other apps so it's tighter branding. (Version 9.0)

JETFIREDX I haven't had time to play with all of the new whiz-bang features that have been introduced and simply made a reply to a comment about the first thing that was presented to me by the new version. I highly doubt you or anybody else has been using it long enough to make a reasonable claim about the "improved" stability or any other aspect of the new version of iTunes except the aesthetic. First impressions do matter and iTunes 9.0 in my opinion made a bad one right away by shocking me with a glaring white screen and a silly blue highlight in my otherwise graphite themed system. I think being able to comfortably look at a webpage or application window matters as much as some of the arguably less useful new features that have been added. (Version 9.0)

DOUG S. That's true, I can't comment as to the increased stability, I'm just going on what I've been told by more techy friends (I'm only a webbie anyway). But the new features I can comment on and they are quite nifty. Though, I should also note that I've commented before (and will continue to do so) that Macupdate should add the ability to rate the aesthetics and user interfacethese are two different but connected thingsbecause it effects the over-all user experience of an app that goes beyond what features it has and so forth. A good app might have very few features but have them organized and presented in an extremely intuitive and visually pleasing manner. Like RipIt, for example. Very, very few features but a very pretty little app. (Version 9.0)

ILGAZ What they should do is, plug a Mac mini to a not so bad HD TV, like the ordinary people buying and try to browse iTunes store and iTunes library on such setup. It is really not good for the eyes, let me warn. If those people could actually browse the store or their own library, they could enjoy huge Mac Mini sales and HD video sales. If they think about people going to buy Apple TV while they enjoy a real computer which they can use for general purpose, it won't happen. If you think I am being paranoid, consider this: It is still run by same management who asked 30 dollars for fullscreen playback, on a brand new G5 workstation or iMac you purchased just until recently. All it needs is a real, working font size setting or a global zoom which Safari 4 already has code. Nothing else. The store is already sort of resolution independent. They could put 2 rows instead of 5 for example, it is not HTML you know. (Version 9.0)

MISHA ... and it's still not 64-bit. And obviously doesn't leverage any of the great new libraries Apple introduced in 10.5. If it did, it would probably have a much smaller footprint and be faster ... Apple continues to support 10.4 because surely their data shows enough iTunes users on 10.4 to justify continued development/more complicated ways of doing things (more iTunes users = more iTunes store purchases). Small developers don't have such fortune... (Version 9.0)
| Sep 9 2009 |
JTHEISS hmm... since it requires 10.4.*11*... methinks apple's been supporting it themselves. developers take note, if you want your latest apps to run in 10.4, you need to get apple to add you into the next 10.4 update. of course, this is extreme sarcasm, but come on. requiring the 11th update is not not writing with support for tiger. it's the two being updated in tandem. So for developers of new apps (native Cocoa) to ignore leveraging the benefits of the 10.5 libraries and 64-bit support in 10.6 (recommended by Apple) is a bit shortsighted. Anyway, I'm off my soapbox. 10.4 is dead. Long live 10.6! (Version 9.0)
| Sep 9 2009 |
ROBACKJA Carbon is only one part of being 64-bit... if you are talking about supporting 10.4. Cocoa frameworks on 10.4 are 32-bit only. In 10.4, if you wanted 64-bit application, you had to make a helper application (command line UNIX tool) that your GUI application called to. So for iTunes to be 64-bit, it has to both convert to Cocoa and drop 10.4 support at the same time. (Version 9.0)

ILGAZ They could ship an 64bit version as early as Leopard. This one being not 64bit or Cocoa is not really poor 10.4 or 10.5 powerpc users fault, it is the iTunes/Quicktime department who excels creating shame for otherwise great company. At last resort, they could keep this carbon monster in version 9 ad release version X as early as tomorrow. I am a bit tired about misunderstandings among new Intel mac owners about what happened and why it happened. Situation today has nothing to do with PowerPC at all let alone supporting 10.4.11 has anything to do with it. There are people who believes Apple shaving the IGNORED powerpc code is the reason why Snow Leopard is faster which of course should be a laughing matter. This is not Windows, there is no registry or DLL hell around. Intels ignored PPC portion since the day first Universal binary shipped. Oh also, thanks to companies chickening, there is no meaningful competitor on OS X too. That also adds to the issue, I see only future Amarok 2 (native Mac) to become a serious alternative. Others are busy with copycatting iPod USB signatures to leech iTunes support you know. I was just saying, by being too much trendy and dropping 10.4.11 support with no meaningful reason rather than "fashion" coding, some developers really lose their prestige. Even Apple giant keeps supporting 10.4.11 as of today. As you somehow blame powerpc users for it, I had to come up with this lengthy explanation. Sorry. (Version 9.0)

MUTZ Apple is becoming the same monolithic mastadont as microsoft, locking Itunes users in only using expensive apple branded stuff. I had a sony portable minidisc 8 years ago, it wouldn't let my transfer my songs from a mac. About the same stuff apple's doing now. I have an Ipod and it's a good walkman but people should have choices. My next Apple computer will be a Hackintosh cause a company that's changed so much in a negative way doesn't deserve my hard earned money anymore. Viva OSX Apple uses processors soldered to your motherboard so there's no way you can replace a processor with a better one, graphic cards are way overpriced for mac too. Only fools buy apple 'branded' ram. (Version 8.2.1)

This is the (sadly) ubiquitous music player for mac os x. The only reason I have it installed is to activate and backup my iphone. 1) Big, clunky intereface 2) tagging is very poorly done 3) Media stored on NAS is not natively rescannable 4) Using (the same) media from multiple location is impossible without a bit of hackery. Occasionally I use multiple machines to import music. It will appear on only the machine, without a real option to rescan the volume that it's on. 5) Playlist support is just plain lame 6) I can go on and on forever about this app and how poorly it's done. VoxApp has been a nice alternative, but the playlist support is also not great. If development on this program continues, watch out iTunes. I suggest anything else if you can deal with it. BUZZARD One change not announced by Apple's release notes is that iTunes 8.2 will apparently make it impossible to jailbreak your iPhone using this version. "Todays iTunes 8.2 update changes the way your computer talks to the device. This affects things like QuickPwn and PwnageTool when they try to identify whats connected. Also, ssh over usb breaks due to same reasons. Fixes are in the works but for now avoid 8.2." For now, don't upgrade if you want to jailbreak an iPhone or iTouch...... (Version 8.2)

SIMPLYMINTS At the advise of Software Update, I have just downloaded and installed 8.1.1, and now all my songs sound very strange. Some seem to have a loud instrumental while singing sounds like it's coming from across the street. Some songs sound like they're under water. Some songs sound like they're being played in a pipe or a tunnel, sort of echo, or have an unrealistic effect to them. Some are just plain utterly soft even with all volume settings at maximum. I really can't listen to my music like this. I've gone through all the settings and tried everything I can think of. I regret upgrading. It was fine before. Seems like this happened a few years ago also, or did I dream it? (Version 8.1.1)

This is the first version with which I've ever had so much trouble. There are many with iPod touches and iPhones having this problem from what I've read the past day. Some have been able to correct it, others, like me, have not. I tried permissions, restoring, reinstalling iTunes, turning off and on settings Apple mentioned, and nothing has helped. If you have an iPod touch or iPhone, at least, you may want to investigate the problems before upgrading to 8.1, to see what you might have happen before Apple releases a less buggy update. VINCE. I dont like the fact, that you cannot turn off genre view' in the preferences since version 8. In my opinion - as a total music freak - apple should drop that whole genre stuff out of their app and instead add the ability to give user defined tags for bands, albums and tracks. i could think of a solution simular to the tagging in iPhoto. that would be great. and it would make much more sense than to persist in the genre-solution. most of the music i listend too it to much multifaceted so that i couldnt put it into only one genre-categorie. if iTunes would support a clever tag system it would be much easier to categorize big music collections (i'm talking of +100gb). it would be easier and faster (more efficient) to find songs and albums. SOREN0 The 2.2 Firmware should be released tomorrow according to an article I read. Version 2.1 of the firmware was released a long time ago, in October. You must connect your iPod Touch/ iPhone to your computer via the USB cable and when iTunes recognizes the device, click the device under Devices in the sidebar and click the Summary tab if its not already selected. Next, click the Update or Check for Update button and iTunes will download and install the latest update to your iPhone/ iPod Touch. Hope this helps. (Version 8.0.2)
| Nov 21 2008 |
JORGEHP iTunes updates have NEVER included firmware for the iPods. iPod/iPhone firmwares have always been separate downloads. Even if iTunes is the medium to apply them, it never meant it included them. Imagine the 4 GB download (or more) iTunes would become if they included ALL the latest firmware to ALL iPods/iPhones ever released!! iTunes detects and recognizes your iPod (that IS true) and when you hit the Update or Restore button it checks with Apple's servers for the latest firmware for that particular iPod and then downloads and installs it (if you chose to install it at that moment). But it downloads only the firmware for that particular iPod. The upside is, once you downloaded it, is saved to your computer. It is also true, that some firmwares require latest versions of iTunes to be able to install them but, again, it does not mean that the firmware updates themselves are included in the iTunes download. Therefore new versions of iTunes do NOT automatically mean that new firmares should be immediately available.

APPLEDOGX Great way to organize music and connect with an iPod. The sync features are fairly intuitive and work well. The app store is great, but searching and organization of the iTunes store could use some major work. When you search for apps for your iPod touch or iPhone you get results mixed in for other types of media. The interface for apps should be more separated from the other media so you don't have to limit the type to "applications" each time you get results. There was a way to see just applications sorted by date, then it became somewhat incomplete, as is a way to see all new and newly updated games. The "new" section often times doesn't show many new items. (Version 8.0.1)

GUIDICE1 I was seeing the "load dataclass information from Sync Services." error too with iTunes 8.0 with 10.5.4. I was able to resolve this by doing a clean install over my previous version of iTunes. Just delete the following files: /Library/Receipts/iTunesX /Library/Receipts/iTunesAccess ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist Re-run the iTunes 8.0 installer. Hope this helps. (Version 8.0)

JOHN F. I like the grid view in iTunes 8. It lets me listen to just an album without making a playlist first. In list view or coverflow, if you listen to an album, it would move to the next one when it finishesunless you narrow the list using the search box. Now I can just pick an artist or an album by clicking on it and listen only to that one. iTunes 8 is pretty snappy too on my 1Ghz iBook G4. Album artwork seems to load faster. Also in the playlist, they've finally altered the folders to match Leopard folders! It's a small thing, but makes it more at home. It seems a pretty good update, maybe the best iTunes ever! VERYCARLA One point - iTunes DOES embed artwork. Once you've gotten your artwork from the iTunes Store, select the album you want to modify. Drag the artwork to the desktop. It'll create a clipping. Then right click on the album tracks (they should all be selected) and choose "Clear Downloaded Artwork". Next, drag the artwork clipping from the desktop back to the artwork pane. Again, the tracks you want to modify should be selected. iTunes will embed the artwork properly. You can also download an Applescript to automate the embedding process from Doug Adams. It's called (get this) "Embed Artwork". (Version 7.6.2)

BRUCE_Y point was that I posted my comment when MU page still showed ver 7.6.0 only. So at time i posted, my info was indeed new "news". Admittedly, after the MU site was updated to get 761, it may look like I was merely reporting on old info. You may notice that the bottom of each poster's comment is a version number in parenthesis. Mine shows "(Version 7.6)". Yours shows "(Version 7.6.1)". That version number lets people know what version of the sofware MU had at the time the poster sent the comment in. Perhaps I should have dug up the MU admin email address, and just sent it as email. That way my comment would not look so dorky after MU updated its page. (Version 7.6.1)

(Version 7.6.1) | |

Actually, I got it direct from the Apple Support Downloads page. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ That sent me to the usual flashy iTunes latest download page, which showed 7.6.1 and just clicked the download button. However, when I go there now, it shows back to 7.6. So maybe it was put up by one group, then pulled by another pending some kind of internal final approval. It happens rarely, but does happen. FYI, Here is the part of the ReadMe.rtfd doc: "What's new in iTunes 7.6.1 Rent and download your favorite movies with iTunes on your computer or directly to your living room on Apple TV. Enjoy rented movies in sizes up to 720p HD with surround sound on your Apple TV and sizes up to DVD-quality on your computer. Transfer your rented movies from iTunes to your iPod or iPhone and enjoy them on the go. Also, purchase and download your favorite TV shows, music, and more directly on your Apple TV. Effortlessly transfer purchases made on Apple TV back to your computer with iTunes. iTunes 7.6.1 includes several bug fixes and improves compatibility with Apple TV software version 2.0." (Version 7.6.1)
| Feb 22 2008 |
the 7.6.1 does show in my Apple Software Update panel after I click the Check Now button. So might be the only way to get it for next short period is via Software Update System Prefs applet. Usually they post the direct DL link after it has been offered in the Software Update panel first. So may just be a timing issue of which dept gets to offer it first. Seems a bit silly, given that the actual file dates inside the 7.6.1 dmg --which I downloaded during that brief available window today-- are Feb 19... which is already a few days past... I'm sure it'll all settle out soon. (Version 7.6.1)

SJJ_PUBLIC I primarily watch movies on my iPod Touch on the train, in 30 minute segments, usually two per day. It thus takes me at least 2 days to watch an average length movie. iTunes' rental scheme of only giving me 24 hours to watch a movie is a bust for me. Surely iPod users like me should have been one of the targets of this service? Apparently we aren't, or Apple just wasn't thinking, or the studios forced their hand on this one. Either way, I won't be renting movies from iTunes. (Version 7.6)

AIKOUSHA This used to be one of the most stable programs on my computer, never having a crash, freeze, or missed byte in an encode. However they screwed the pooch on this one. This update has a number of pointless things (what is this something like 13 updates in the last 6 months?), and they still haven't put in options like killing the annoying MANDATORY iPod Sync and pestering message about saving notes everytime it's launched. How about a feature to grab and store album covers outside the music files in a cache? And can't we have a contextual menu for encoding, instead of having to go into preferences every freakin' time just to change one minor aspect of the "import." And, of course, NOW, It freezes, locks-up, and goes permanent BEACH BALL everytime I try to play a CD through it, it hasn't made it past 2 tracks. Then, trying to remove it and put an older version back on is next to impossible. Killed the "helper" so I could delete the program, but something in the computer refuses to let the old install work, only giving me the option from the installer of "There is nothing to install." This is pretty screwed up, Apple. The rating here is for this version only... a program that constantly locks up, even if free, isn't worth the price. When working, iTunes is pretty much the best multifeature media player/encoder out there, but Apple's track record recently with stability has been severely lacking. (Version 7.5)

MUDFLAPPER Paying $.99 isn't a big deal either. Apple would probably give the service away for free if the labels didn't demand a cut of every track (in every format) that they sell. When you purchase a song from iTunes, you're not purchasing the actual song. You're purchasing the right to play that song on your computer and your iPod. That's it. Legally, we're allowed to make one backup copy of any song, I believe. Converting it to a ringtone qualifies as a completely different usage, so the labels want their dough. Apple isn't turning into Microsoft. They're just abiding the laws. (Version 7.4.1)

Long desired core features such as separate shuffle settings per playlist, skip to next / previous album. It would also be great to have missing AppleScript functions finally implemented like working skip to next chapter, fetching podcast chapter art, control of airtunes speaker settings, podcast release dates, and much else. Install, launch once or twice to make sure that iTunes launches, then remove iTunes from APE's master exclude list. Shapeshifter somehow is tripping up iTunes installer. (Version 7.3)

DAVID.ACORD as mentioned above, if you have shapeshifter, just add itunes to the exclude list and it'll be fine. (Version 7.3)

BARNEY4 The update of course breaks Aqua4iTunes & applying the recent version causes the music library 2 not appear, uninstalling does not solve the problem, re-installing iTunes does. VolumeLogic works but if your Intel, many horror stories out there so be ware. Works on my system, however your mileage may vary. Click on my profile 2 C sys specs. (Version 7.3)

FOLLEREC iTunes 7.3 finally fixes the blurry CoverFlow scrollbar affecting MacBooks... and that's the only thing I bothered to notice... which is a good thing since iTunes is still just as good as ever. (Version 7.3)

PECOS PETE Upgrade worked but after applying the last release of UNO ver. 1.5 (240) no songs appear. Just re-install iTunes again & all is good. Volume Logic works. (Version 7.2)

STEVEN JAY COHEN For the first time EVER, an update from Apple broke something on my machine. After Updating to iTunes 7.2 (via software update), I cannot start iTunes (nor can I easily force quit the 1/2 started application). Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. ARES Good point: This version is a bit faster. Very bad point: It randomly renames artist >:-( OS X was a reliable system. Now... It's a shame there are so many bugs due to poor quality control. OS 10.4.9 and iTunes 7 are Microsoft-like jokes. I am an avid Mac fan and I am sad to write that I don't trust Apple updates anymore. I hope OS 10.4.9.1 and iTunes 7.1.2 will correct this mess. If not, I will revert to 10.4.8 and stop upgrading software AND hardware. (Version 7.1.1)

ITUNESUPDATEHATER After installing I-Tunes 7.1.1 can't work keyboard shortcuts within I-Tunes... Also can't sync I-Pod or update I-Pod software in ITunes. I tried to reinstall ITunes but also had problems -- Disk image failed to mount, get message "Device not configured". (Version 7.1.1)

MAINBRAIN I found this latest update to be the least stable of all previous updates. I just burned a CD. It would then not eject. So, I force quit iTunes, and re-opened. This time the CD I burned had a completely different Title, Album and Artist name than the one I burned. However, the correct music was on the CD, just all the ID information indicated in the iTunes window listed unrelated Album Title, Artist, etc. Only the time was right. (Version 7.1.1)

MACUPDATE ADMIN From MacInTouch.com: "The folks at Unsanity may finally have unravelled the mystery of randomly-disastrous Apple software updates: Shock and Awe: How Installing Apple's Updates can Render Your Mac Unbootable and How You Can Prevent it ... When you see the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of a software update, Mac OS X is really updating prebinding. Updating prebinding has a very, very nasty bug in it (look at _dyld_update_prebinding). If multiple processes are updating prebinding at the same time, then it is possible for a system file to be completely zero'd out. Basically, all data in the file is deleted and it is replaced with nothing. This bug is usually triggered when updating Mac OS X and every update to Mac OS X has the potential to render your system unbootable depending on if the "right" file is deleted or not. It's triggered during the "Optimizing System Performance" phase of installing an update. This phase is actually just running update_prebinding. If you launch an application that links to libraries that are not yet prebound, there is a chance one of those files will be zero'd out as dyld automatically redoes the prebinding on that file. I've been tracking this particular bug for about 18 months now. Most of the real "random" failures reported on various Mac OS X "troubleshooting" sites after a user has installed an Apple software update are actually manifestations of this bug. By real I mean not imagined problems or ones that have been there for a very long time but the user is just now noticing it and artificially connecting the cause to the recent update (it's called Pareidolia). Yes, this nasty prebinding bug has been reported to Apple and yes, it is 100% reproducible if you want to reproduce it. Every single time you install an update to Mac OS X whether it be an iTunes update, a QuickTime update, an update for daylight saving time, a security update, an Airport update, or an actual Mac OS X update, you can be hit by this bug. In order to prevent yourself from being smacked in the face by this bug, follow this simple rule: When "Optimize System Performance" appears during the update process do not touch your computer and definitely do not launch any applications. Just back away from your computer box as if it were a swarm of bees. Yes, it does mean that if you install the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update, you may get hit by the bug." (Version 7.1.1)

MACUPDATE ADMIN So, basically what this is telling us is that it is not a good idea to drive your car while someone is working on the engine. Knock wood, I've never been bitten by this bug, ever. But I never try to drive my car when the engine is being worked on. Fortunately, all Apple updates have gone without a hitch for me since OS X version 10.1 update, which did cause me grief, but as I recall Apple released 10.1.5 rather quickly and that was very remedial for me.
