SOUTHPAWAMI  Fire rocked. It may be dead, it's true. It still rocked.

There were some odd things about fire... like how you opened up a chatroom with a name in Yahoo, and how even if anyone used the same name to create a chatroom in Yahoo Chat, you'd never see their posts and they wouldn't see your posts. You had to invite them to the chat. No other chat program on Mac could do that with yahoo chat rooms. Maybe it was a bug, but it sure was nice.

Of course, Yahoo chat is isn't the same these days, and Adium is more directed towards easily making encrypted communication than they were prior to the Fire project dying, but still, it was a nice program.

PHATTYBOOMBATTY  Fire is crashing on Leopard 10.5.0 after password is entered in any account. Fire attempts to connect, a spinning beach ball follows, and then the app quits unexpectedly. This is on the PPC build of Leopard

Any chance of getting a version update? :)

WCITYMIKE  Fire is officially dead (I'm not on the team, just reposting it here):

"We are saddened to announce that there will be no future versions of Fire. There are several reasons for this end, but the most notable is the loss of developers. Fire's development had dwindled to few developers who do not wish to continue the project alone. In addition, another major contributing factor is the fact that all but one of Fire's IM libraries is no longer in active development.

"The good news is that two of Fire's developers have joined the Adium team and have written a transition path. Adium 1.0, upon first launch, will import your Fire accounts, away messages, groups, buddies, and logs into Adium. For future updates and IM needs, we suggest that you look at Adium.

MOEBIAN73  It's the best IM app on the Mac. It needs an update though. I, for one, would LOVE IT, if FIRE did everything AIM, YAHOO, & MSN can, as far as talk support, webcam support, and game support go. Because the AIM, YAHOO & MSN IM apps Mac have now aren't even updated to the latest versions and Yahoo IM has mediocre webcam support, but that's it. It would be cool to correspond with PC users through IMs & talk or play games, like Tic Tac Toe on Yahoo IM, & webcam all in one app. Just a suggestion.

INSTANT RUNOFF  The following reasons are why I switched to Fire from Adium (i.e., these are advantages _over_ Adium):

1) Fire has commands for Connect to All [Protocols] and Disconnect from All

2) Fire can automatically reconnect to services upon wake.

3) Fire is smarter about Keychain access (Adium can spawn a lot of Keychain access request dialog boxes).

PATDDFAN1  I have used Adium, Yahoo IM, MSN IM, Fire, and iChat, but Fire is the best IM app for Mac! I just wish there was a version for my older macs (OS 7.1!)

Anyways, my problem.... well, every once in a while, Fire slows up my machine, and then unexpectedly quit. I'm able to reload, but it has happened many times when I have Fire and Safari running at the same time. any advice?

Also, can you enter any of Yahoo's chat rooms on a mac, or is that only on windows?

finally, there needs to be a way to read names from the address book (like iChat can) in the next version (and it should still run on 10.3 as well!)

I am using an iBook G4 with OS 10.3.9!

SLAM  i've been using fire for two months now and i am incredibly pleased. i'm using it to replace YM and iChat and it does all that they do and so much more. it is a better YM client that Yahoo's own program, which is crippled on the mac.

the basic functionality (chat) is solid. i've had only two strange issues: one time some formatted text was not received when sent, and one time it kept saying my friend was typing when she was not.

the advanced features are outrageously cool. spell check while i type is crucial. speaking names when someone logs in is very useful to me, it lets me know if i need to interrupt my other work for an important chat person. i haven't needed the group chat yet. file transfer did not seem to work across Yahoo but Yahoo Messenger on the mac doesn't work either so maybe it's a service issue and not Fire.

i have played with Adium but lack of spellcheck and speech would keep me away. Adium is visually more appealing but i am more interested in function.

i would like to see Fire get iTunes support, Skype support, and voice and video support, but maybe i am asking for too much!

EMPEREUR  I have been using Fire and Adium.

I would like Fire team do some extra if it is possible.

I like Fire better because it speaks and does spell check, whereas Adium don't.

Now if Fire can have the picture showing problem fixed would be great. Can't see picture on Fire.

Now if Adium can speak I would use it over Fire.

YANOKWA  Adium does the same spellchecking that Cocoa apps have. Right click on the text input box, and turn on Check Spelling As You Type.

As to speaking, it would be pretty easy to do a plugin to speak all incoming and outgoing text, but I imagine that would get pretty annoying...

JON.KANTRO  well as a friend of the developers i know what their take on this subject is. some of the adium developers such as adam iser and evan schoenberg actually have spoken to the fire developers about some of the code. fire has influenced bits of code in adium. there is a great interview with evan schoenberg on the drunkenblog and he mentions that fire and adium have nothing against each other. he says the fire is a polished, stable client in code and thats exactly how its meant to be. think of fire as the father, and adium as the modern day son. they dev team sometimes work with each other but there is no need to join together. fire is meant for the older version of OSX in which i beleive is untrue it all depends on personal and practical use. fire. the reason why fire is still made for that exact reason. if you dont need all the extras, and fire is the way to go. if you want a little more glitz galmor and up to date program adium is the way to go. no hard feelings, at all.

the interview that i was talking about can be found here:

ANONYMOUS  I have nothing against Fire personally, used it a while back, but left to Adium. The reason I use Adium, is becuase it is 100% customizable, down to the nitty gritty. Its pretty stable, never had it crash on me, although there still having issues with file transfer, overall for a chat client I really recomend Adium. I think the creators of Fire should partner up with Adium and create a super chat program for us Mac users!!!!

First, one needs to ask is why did the Adium developers decide to create a new client rather than join Fire? Fire existed years before Adium and even before MacOS X Public Beta. I remember running it on OS X Server in 2000.

While it solved some previous issues, version 1.5.1:

-takes a long time to launch,

-is not that responsive,

-takes more processor time than previous versions,

-crashes more often

-is not happy about being hidden (leads to crashes)

Overall, I love this app, use it everyday, It makes using multiple IMs easy, and it's Free!. I just wish they would correct the minor flaws that were introduced in this version.

SOUTHPAW  I posted this comment to an opinion already, but I thought it was important to remind new mac users of the evils of less than 512mb of ram.

~~~~
There wouldn't be any chance you're using only 256mb of memory, would there? That is, in order to experience problems.
There has been numerous... and I do mean numerous accounts of people having random problems with programs within OS X when they only use 256mb of RAM. In fact, anandtech.com says, "Apple should not be allowed to sell any system with OS X with less than 512MB of memory; and you shouldn't buy the mini with less than 512MB of memory. It's as simple as that.". That's pretty blatant.
So, if you haven't already, please consider upgrading you're memory. As I've never had Fire 1.5.1 ever crash on me, and I'm using a G3 900 laptop with 640mb of ram, I'd find it pretty hard pressed to think it's Fire's fault for this unfortunately lousy experience you've been having.
ALAN  It is always great to get user feedback to know how we can make Fire better.
I know that there are some loyal Adium users out there, but before posting yet another commercial for Adium, make sure that you are aware of a few features that some other IM programs may not support.
1) Group Chat
2) irc
3) File transfer
4) Automatic Language Translation of IM Messages
5) Profanity Filtering
6) Secure IM
7) Tabbed Chat
8) Chat text styles - including ichat bubbbles
9) Rendezvous chat with iChat and Trillian Pro
And last but not least... The rumors of our deaths are greatly exaggerated. Development of Fire continues to progress.
Watch closely for announcements of Fire 2.0, which will have yet another large group of new features for you...
And best of all, it is free, because we volunteer!
ANONYMOUS  Both Fire 1.5 and 1.5.1 won't connect to Jabber. 1.5 would start and then crash and quit. 1.5.1 just sits and says connecting but never does. All of the previous versions (to 1.0.3) worked fine and Fire 1.0.4 still works fine, so I downgraded. Maybe the next "tweak" will get things to where it will work for me again. ANONYMOUS  My biggest beefs with Fire have been that I can't exchange files via ICQ, the occasional "low level connection errors", and that I never got it to work with IRC. Not the end of the world, but would have been nice to get the file transfer somewhere along the line. Was hoping for some added functionality in this version, but after downloading, got some type of permissions error upon trying to install, which proceeded to lock up my existing version (1.0.4). Had to re-install the old version in order to chat again. But hey, it's free, so I cannot complain much.
ALAN  The error message you received about permissions has to do with the fact that you need to trash your old Fire application before you copy the new one to the Applications folder.
The IRC use is admitedly clumsy in Fire, and is one of the primary things I am working on for Fire 2.0. Right now it works best with irc servers that use NickServ to register nicknames.
Also, our ICQ support will be enhanced significantly in Fire 2.0 when we use a new library to connect to ICQ. At the current time, we plan on this supporting file transfer, buddy lists, and group chats.
Please do not take it personally to the developpers of Fire, I am sure this is a very difficult task and you do it very well, please keep up the great work. Offer some of these features and I may even switch back!
153957  I liked it a year ago, but now Adium is my chat app.
It looks sooo much better, way more customizable... its a wonderful app, the latest version 0.7 had some new 'bubble' features which are great, I'd suggest you take a look at Adium, then decide for your self Fire/Adium.(of course not MSN Messenger).. My vote goes to Adium!!
but this app is OK
MALINA  Fire.app is a decent multiprotocol client. It's been around almost as long as OSX has been out and the developers do a great job keeping this application up-to-date. Yes, there are some features (e.g. MSN avatars) which are not yet supported, but Fire.app is stable and easy to use.
If you're stuck on 10.1 (refuse to pay), then there's no alternative... and I'd say this is a phantastic one anyway!
^_^  Fire's great in terms of features & interface. However, there seems to be a glaring security hole. Even if I select to block messages from non-buddies in my preferences, I still receive messages from EVERYONE. This really just amounts to spam slowing down my productivity during the day - the little Fire icon bounces about five minutes w/ a message from someone trying to get me to buy something or go see their "pictures" . Anyway, this renders Fire completely unusable for me.
ANONYMOUS  Ihate having 4 applications open in the background just to chat here and there. So, I tried a few different multi-client apps (and I KEEP trying them). However, I've been using Fire for a decent amount of time and I can honestly say that it just kicks ass. The interface is simple (a very important thing for a chat app in my opinion), it's a stable program, and you can connect to basically any other client. If I absolutely had to say something negative, it would be to change the icons. Actually, another interesting idea would be to use tabs when chatting with multiple users.
ANONYMOUS  Just to dispell some fears that may be propogated by a few here, Fire has not ceased development nor has it been left for bug fixes only. We have decided that it would be worth while to push for a 1.0 version, and all of our development efforts have gone toward this. The 0.32.e through m have been releases to allow people to continue using Fire without having to run an alpha build. Testing builds are available on Fire's sourceforge page, and we encourage you to test them (Click "More Information" link, then "project page" on the left. You should see the beta download link there).
Another thing to note: I may be wrong on these, but it appears from their respective forums that the Adium 2.x builds and the upcoming Proteus 4 are 10.3 only. Now Adium has hinted that they will have a final release that runs on 10.2, but Fire runs on 10.1,2, and 3, and so will its version 1.0.
ICHATUSER  Well, I think that just goes to show that Fire is indeed the best choice among the three: Fire, Adium, Proteus.
Before iChat came out I used Fire, I tried the others (Adium, Proteus) and _really_ disliked them. In nasty old Classic Mac OS (loved it then, hate it now... OS X is a dream come true for me) I used AIM ever since the first Mac version was available, and yes I tried ICQ and Yahoo back in those days as well. Now I use iChat, I do not need nor want to chat with users of Yahoo/MSN/ICQ chat services. But I am glad to know that Fire is still a very viable choice.
JOHN E.  It's seems a developer would be biased... so as a USER who's used both softare I can say that Fire is updated VERY frequently.
If yahoo changes protocols... an update is ready to keep up with it.
Fire has the task of keeping up with no less that 5 different IM technologies and make them seem like it's just ONE software.
Now I just open FIre, which connects to all my accounts. Then any buddies in AIM, YIM, MSN, ICQ, and even mIRC can just message me and I message them right back.
I've installed Adium 2.0 and it sucks, I can't believe the developer would post here. I hope Adium does as good as Fire someday but I'm willing to NEVER use it since the developer decided to slam perfectly good software.
ANONYMOUS  because I think Adium is better than Fire I must be a developer of Adium? lets clear this up: I have am in no way affiliated with Adium, Fire, AOL, or any other software related to this topic. I am a user, just like you, who has used both applications in the past. Fire was for months my weapon of choice when it came to instant messaging but like I said, no new features are ever added at this point; the developers are content with the app as it is, releasing only bug fixes when something in the protocol breaks. My utterly independent and unbiased review is that Adium ALPHA beats Fire hands down. it doesn't do stupid things such as locally storing the buddy lists so you can't edit them through any other app and it is 10x more customizable, allowing skins to make the buddy list appear however you like and even the message windows are done in html so you can make them look however you like them to. Fire has none of this. it's UI is utterly horrible. all the integration between the services you talked about in your message are no different in Adium, if anything it is easier to manage your accounts from Adium.
again, i have nothing to do with Adium in any way, shape, or form. The point of these comments is to let other people know what we think about the application, whether it be good or bad. because I have something negative to say about the application does not warrant accusations of working on a rival program. grow up.
DJ MUPPET  I have been a loyal fan of Fire ever since I upgraded to OS X about 2 years ago. I'm afraid that lately I have had to go back to running all 4 of my messenger programs instead.
The problem is that I will install Fire and enter all of my information for my accounts, contact lists, etc. The next time I open up the program, its all gone. I have to enter the information all over again.
I thought maybe it was a simply a matter of some sort of glitch between a 6 year-old B&W G3 and Panther, but I have since upgraded to a G5 and am having the same problems.
I like this program but this needs to be fixed if you want me to use it.
or those having problems with 0.32.j (especially if you are using a non hotmail passport account), please run the following command in Terminal:
defaults write Fire SyncMSNLists 1
And see if that addresses things. This part of the 0.99.x code was not incorporated into 0.32.j, but manually setting the pref should take care of things.
JJ  Fire is the skeleton key of messengers. This software likely has competitors running because it simply integrates all the widely used messenging clients into one program so you dont have to have 3 or more messenging clients open like I used to, Yahoo, MSN, and (cough) AOL. It even supports ICQ and others! Personally I want to support businesses like Yahoo, however I dont think this means that I should be forced to use proprietary messenging clients like MSN appearently has tried. Anyways, if you message a little or a lot, FIRE is simply the best. dont take my word for it, see it for yourself!!!
ANONYMOUS  Great program when it works, but Yahoo has not been working for weeks. There are ways to get back basic functionality -- my feeling is the developers should have implemented a basic fix and then worked to restore the full previous capabilities (perhaps including Yahoo chat rooms, a capability that is not now present).
I applaud the developers for their ambition in seeking to restore full Yahoo capabilities, but when an outage occurs and cannot be immediately repaired, a quick hack that restores 80-90 percent of what people care about -- basic IM capability -- is critical. I fear Fire is losing users to other platforms the longer this drags on -- bad for the project. bad for the end users, and all over something that could have been fixed by copying GAIM code, weeks ago.
2. Aim Buddy icons- aren't animated...too small (should be 48x48, but are more like 30x30), and you can't change your own through FIRE.
3. Random Noises....It likes to just make login and log off noises, when no one logs on or logs off... I'm not sure if there is some funky sound setting somewhere i need to change or if this is just faulty...
4. Slightly Unstable..... crashes every once in a while, but not too bad really..
ANONYMOUS  It's still the nicest messaging client on Mac OS X... but unfortunately it still seems to have major problems with changes in the buddy list on ICQ.
For example, you cannot safely delete or add ICQ buddies from within Fire. You have to do it from the normal ICQ client. If you add buddies there, Fire still does not synchronize with the ICQ server so you would still have your old buddy list in Fire. The »Re-load buddies« function appears to be entirely non-functional for ICQ.
A workaround used to be to delete the FireConfiguration.plist file in ~/Application Support/Fire, but that seems to no longer work either.
Keep it up, and if you can add voice chat and so on and other things that arnt there, you can beat them at there own game. --It's very stable, and never crashes, you could make it your defalt its so stable!
FIRE AND ICQ  Have been using Fire for about 7 months now and will never touch the original ICQ or (probably) anything else again. It rocks.
There is a drawback, though. Fire seems to have big problems managing an ICQ buddy list. Removing buddies in Fire doesn't work, instead, they strangely appear in a different group and things get all mangled up. I even started the original ICQ client to get rid of the unwanted buddies and then tried to reload my contacts in Fire, but that didn't work either, things were getting totally confused.
The solution is to go to Library/Application Support/Fire/ and remove the FireConfiguration.plist file, and then re-connect to the service. It will then re-load the buddy list from the ICQ server and everything will be fine.
FROGMELLA  Fire ROCKS!
To the anonymous poster who wanted this for Windoze, have you checked out Vista?
http://www.i3connect.com/vista_personal.html
Not as good as Fire but, hey, Fire runs on a Mac. Heh.
E.J.  This is a brilliant piece of software. Often switching to a mutli-IM program means giving up all the unique preferences and the native stability. Not so with Fire. I'm terribly impressed, but please, please don't go shareware. The (free) price is the clincher that makes this the best IM client, hands down.
FROGMELLA  This app ROCKS! My Windoze buddies are all secretly jealous of having one app to do all services. I have had no problems with crashes or dropped connections. Only things that would be nice would be proper group chat and file transfers with MSN.
Otherwise, Epicware guys, thank you thank you THANK YOU!
ANONYMOUS  Just downloaded, and seems to be working great save for one issue. I can't get Yahoo to let me login. AOL and MSN work fine, but Yahoo keeps kicking me out immediately upon login. Not sure why that is. Other than that, great stuff!
HASAN  Fire is relatively easy to set up, and more reliable than the AIM, or YIM clients I was using before. Add to that lack of Addware, need for only one client for all of my chat friends, and the price... We have a winner.
DAVE C.  This is a great product and I appreciate the author taking the time to develop this for the Mac community at no cost to us. I havent had any problems with this at all. It has a lot of great features and does its job of letting me talk to my friends who all have different IM software. Good Work!!
SPIKE  I think that the problem with MSN is "not" fire's fault. I don't use Fire, but when I use the official MSN app, it also drops the connection or sometimes it doesn't send the text (problems with the connection). Instead, try to use Windows MSN app (I have VPC), it doesn't have any kind of problem, and if you can, try a app called "Trillian" (www.trillian.cc), it's for windows, but it's great... they say that they will make a mac version...
In conlusion, the problem with MSN is because of the really bad coding of the mac app (it suxs)!!!!
ALAN COOK  I'm frustrated with all of the Mac OS X "IM" type clients...Fire still drops my messages and my friends are frustrated that I'm online but ignoring them and I do not receive their messages. THERE IS A POLL for which platform to port Trillian (a "fire" type multi-IM client) and Mac OS is losing to Linux...according to my Windows/Linux friends, this is a very stable client and we should all vote for the Mac OS X port...vote at:
http://www.trillian.cc/
thanks,
Alan
ANONYMOUS  The best IM software (and the only one other than ICQ) for OS X. For those of you that get a text file... just drag it on Stuffit Expander, and it turns it into a disk immage.
