MARK POLANE  Having used speed download for a number of years it usefulness just keeps getting better with each new release.

After recently upgrading to Snow Leopard, I ran into some technical snags with the program, I was impressed with the speed with which I received a reply and got assistance in solving my problems.

To make matters worse I seemed to have lost my registration codes dating back to a year or more, and thanks to the quick and kind assistance was furnished with my old code very expediently.

All in all I enjoy SD5 very much. could be nice to have better support for backup services such as Rapidshare and MegaUpload which I use a lot for my backups and sending files. WIGHTA  Are you too getting annoyed at the way SD attempts unsuccessfully to update its componehts every time you launch it--- spanning the last several versions, currently at v.5.2.5 ? I'm using 10.5.8 on a 2007 MacMini. I followed the various advice on the SD Forums but none of it worked for me : Corrected the permissions of the Scriptng Additions folder, did a manual download of a fresh copy of the SD dmg, & eventually I did a full uninstall with Uninstaller v.1.0.2. and then reinstall.

Before System X, the advice was always to do installs with the Extensions Off. So I tried the System X equivalent=Safe Mode= hold down Shift key until you hear the tone when restarting and then enter the Admin Password once you are prompted to do so. So I restarted in Safe Mode then launched SD then clicked upon Update Components and this time it worked. It beachballed briefly and then it was fine. End of problem.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  Even if this was called "Medium Download" or "Slow Download", you know what, I'd still buy it because it solves my number one and two issues with downloading:

1. Scheduling

2. Cut-offs

Speed Download allows me to schedule my downloads during times when it won't affect others on my network.

Speed Download will resume my broken downloads so I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to babysit them.

This is also important if you use a browser that is prone to crashing -- and let's face it, what browser ISN'T these days -- SD continues to download even when your browser crashes. It works independently of the browser so you don't lose those big files mid-download and have to start all over.

These things are more important than speed (to me), but, as it happens, I get very speedy downloads to boot -- much faster than using a browser alone. Your mileage may vary of course; that's why the developer offers a trial. Use it. Whining that it doesn't give you enough speed when there's a perfectly good trial version available in which you could have tested the app before you bought it makes you look a bit dim.

The developer is constantly improving this product and it's a fabulous app. Totally worth the money, imo.

1. Lacks the options to Hold and Queue downloads in the toolbar. Accessing these options via a contextual menu is not as efficient as it was before.

2. The small, unobtrusive floater from version 4 is gone.

3. There's a "Web" menu with an item to "Buy Now" even after a person has purchased the application.

4. Adding files from a URL has been problematic.

This is the fourth update since I posted my comments and they were going to "be taken in consideration"

Nothing has changed regarding this issues. In addition, I recently emailed Yazsoft regarding another problem with the "Adding files from a URL" feature. Nine days later I still have not received any response.

Speed Download receives many 5-star reviews and praise from people who have never reviewed anything else. I really wish I could rate version 5 with 5-stars. I like the software and the company. As it is, I have to deduct 1-star from my previous review given the lack of customer support.

VFJCZYN5LQXK  This utility is unbelievably good! I bought it as a part of Yazsoft's Promo Bundle. It works perfectly as advertised. I'm particularly pleased with its built-in FTP client. I do web development and this software saves so much time in transferring development sites. Compared to Safari's default downloader this thing downloads everything 4~6 times faster in my case.

Also, don't be fooled by the delay the trial version puts out upon launch. Once registered, the delay is completely removed, and the software launches instantaneously. It's fast in all aspects!

RANDYLB  My first introduction to Speed Download was from the MacHeist event last year. As with past bundles, I hurry to download and backup, copy to the Applications folder and enter the license. Shortly thereafter, I noticed this big red box pop-up and the downloads were taking half the time or less! I couldn't remember the name just yet, but I knew I liked it and that it made my life a little bit happier! As the Macheist snafu came and went, I was able to buy 2 more licenses for $15 for my powerbook and a soon to be acquired new iMac. With business slowing down, the new iMac just became a reality, but I was still able to retrieve the additional license (they were sold a bit differently at the time and Kagi wasn't as helpful as you would expect) and Johnny was instrumental in helping me get it up and running happily with the rest of my home/office network! There's a "Web" menu with an item to "Buy Now." I already bought the program, so in essence that menu is a waste of space. Checking the Registration Details my name and number of licenses appear, but the Name and Serial fields are blank. I don't know whether this is the correct behavior.

Adding files from a URL is a great feature, but it is provided by some (or all) web browsers these days. I just used it to download some files, and after clicking "OK" the downloads began as expected, but the "Add files from URL" window remained open. I clicked OK again expecting the window to close, but the files were downloaded again. Trying to stop the duplicate files from downloading was futile. I managed to stop a few, but it became easier to just let the downloads finish and remove the duplicates later. Fortunately these were only 70 files, no bigger than 5MB.

Through the years I've been pleased with Speed Download for the most part. Version 5 feels like a big step backwards. Hopefully these issues will be corrected.

I would rate version 4 with 5 stars, but this one is not as good. To me this one is definitely not worth the upgrade from version 4.

SSJ152  I switched from another bought download manager because it had problems with long/obfuscated urls and always ended up using the same file name. Speed download doesn't do this, it just works.

Speed download (5.1.1) is well integrated into Leopard and works with the web browsers I use (Safari and Firefox) with no fuss or clutter. It does what it is supposed to do, batching downloads and maximizing throughput. I use the download filters to automatically sort my downloads (by extension) into specific sub-directories and find that helpful in managing my downloads folder.

I haven't needed tech support yet, but they processed my request for a license to switch in a couple of hours, the first thing the next day after ordering, which I rate very very good (I was already using the product in a trial).

I thought the product I upgraded from was terrific until I tried Speed Download. I rate this program as the best I've seen & used on the Mac. Thanks for the special price for "switchers" Yazsoft! Your program is worth every penny and more!

MARTíN MARCONCINI  I gotta say that I was skeptical of using any sort of download manager, but after you start using Speed Download you don't know the power behind downloads.

The new Leopard download folder is nice, but it gets easily crowded if you download too much. Speed Download lets you keep some order, retransfer files, and more importantly, you can THROTTLE your download. slowing down the queue makes you a better co-worker by not eating the whole xDSL line !

I'd say that I'm so used to it that I wouldn't want to use OS X without it anymore.

I had a few issues with upgrades and licenses, but they gladly fixed them for me.

CHUCK9  What can I say? It started controlling my downloads and has grown to be much more then that, it's become an intricate part of my Mac life. It exceeds the boundaries it started with and now does so much more.

I recommend this product to anyone that sees even just one thing that they like about it because fro there on it becomes a necessity and you see so many other things the program does and ever so smoothly.

There customer service is second to none,

and there application speed download manages to download at least twice as fast as my safari and firefox. Though every one else's net speeds will differ.

Features: This little app is highly customizable and jam packed full of features. Browser integration is seamless and can be turned on and off at the flick of a switch.

Ease of use: If you have browser integration then you wont need to do anything, just click on a file and its instantly downloaded in speed download.

Value: $25 USD - just over £10 GBP i would say thats very good vale for money!

Stability: I can only say i have never encountered any glitches freezes stalls etc in my time using this.

TANKKNIGHT  I get the 'component update' question in 504 every time I start up SD like it did 501. I wiped the restarted my Mac, killed SD prefs and made sure the permissions were okay. SD 5 has been nothing but one headache after another. I went back to 503 and I will not be updating SD again. Once 503 quits I quit with SD. A real shame that until version 5, SD was a great product.

Oh, my Mac is a PPC G5, so maybe those using Intel Macs have better luck.

SIGIL  I'm a new Mac User (2005). I debated buying this app for quite sometime. I must say that I am very happy with it. Its become more valuable than I anticipated. I find more and more uses for it. On several occasions, I was going to either buy or download (freeware) software and discovered that I didn't have to. SD5 could do the job. It performs very well and it's stable. I've bought several apps that were unstable, but I was not told this. So, I have to wait for an update. If I request a refund, they try to resell me the buggy product with the promise of a "fix" coming soon. Soon proves to longer than one would think. I found the customer service to be responsive and courteous. I definitely love the .Mac integration and the speed boost I get on downloads. I'm still exploring it, so I may comment later.

CHIMP_MAN72_HOTMAIL.COM  SImply a fantastic application. After using some of Windows' offerings in this area I kept on wishing there was SD for Windows! The ease of use is fantastic. Simply copy some RapidShare links (or whatever), select SD, and paste! Or even, copy a whole load of text with RS links in it, and paste, and SD will sort it all out and just add the RS links. Then download them as fast as possible. A brilliantly executed application.

TANKKNIGHT  I have not been happy with SD since upgrading to 5. SD 5 worked pretty good so I figured it was worth it. 5.0.1 was junk and cost me several hours of diagnostics. 5.0.2 was good again. 5.0.3 is back to bad ... SD puts objects in the main library inputmanagers & internet plug-ins, but then Safari will not use them. So you have to put a copy in your users library. You must copy them into the users library 'cause if you move them when SD executes it will move them to the main library. IMHO Quality Control seems to be suffering with SD 5.

MITCHISMO  Although many of you probably read reviews from most recent to least recent, I'm going to start out by saying that I'd made a negative comment (not review) regarding the company releasing a new, but paid upgrade to MacHeist purchasers shortly after the MacHeist campaign through which I purchased this program. I mention this, because they deserve kudos for making it up to users by offering them a free upgrade to 5 (with a paid upgrade to 6), or a paid upgrade to 5 (with a free upgrade to 6). Correcting course is impressive in our age of conviction beyond reason.

But now for the review:

I only review software I like and software that I've been using for while--and this one has become truly valuable to me. Like 1Password is a great application to manage passwords across browsers, this does the same for downloads--and it does it very well and very reliably, but also quickly, without bother, and ultimately faster for most downloads than a browser alone can offer.

It handles most download types, and can offer complete post-processing of downloads or no post-processing of downloads, or anything imaginable in-between. I use it only for the simple stuff, to accelerate my downloads to a maximum speed with a connection history so I can see where and when things go wrong (or simply slow down).

While I preferred v4's floating window to the design of v5, the interface is still clean, customizable, and easy to user an understand.

If you download anything (and who doesn't), this should certainly improve your experience. And while I still won't go bonkers over the price (I'll save that for MacHeist/MacUpdate bundles), I can tell you that the software is useful, stable, and kept up-to-date, and the company is willing to admit when it's made a mistake, and you can't possibly ask for something more valuable than that--so the main rating is higher than the sum of it's parts. And it's become pretty indispensable to me as well, despite the fact that it has a few shortcomings in the interface arena--but they don't bother me, and may not bother you either. You owe yourself to try it, if it sounds like something useful to you.

With version 5.0.3, I really, really love the new YouTube contextual menu. Now, downloading a video from YouTube is just a control click away, all with the extra speed and convenience of the great SD interface. Very, very cool!

Speed Download is one of my "must have" utilities, and is especially fantastic for downloading all the images or MP3s or whatever from a web page or link. Being able to queue up dozens of downloads and then "forgetting" about it while SD does its stuff is so handy, that once you try it, you'll never want to be limited to what a mere browser can do. HUMBLEC  I consistently get faster downloads than by using the web browser download using a cable modem(typically 300-500 KB/s). I've found that they are very fair with their upgrade policies and make a very good product.

KUKKIS  With latest update the Speed Download ROCKS! In order to achieve best possible speed try changing the number of connections. Preset seems to be three but I've achieved best results with 5. Anyway, Speed Download does excellent job of sorting all your downloads on top of achieving superior download speeds. FTP feature is excellent. I have actually stopped using Transmit in favor of Speed Download since its very stream lined. For .Mac users SD is great since you can achieve far superior speeds with it when transferring files to iDisk.

Download managers are a good idea because when you download a large file and if something happens you'd have to start all over again. Like a 200mb program or a 500mb video, oh! Especially on a 786 dsl connection, you'd wish you'd had a DM then...

Also, it uses multiple ports to download the file in portions speeding the download up. They also have other benefits such as download at a later time, etc...etc..

GARYS  I tried out Speed Download and all of the apps that were part of the MacHeist bundle a while back. Speed Download was the only app I found useful out of the offerings, so I bought it directly from Yazsoft. I have a 256Kbs internet connection, however I rarely topped out my bandwidth on single file downloads from most sources. Speed Download changed that. Almost every file I download now comes blazing down. I'm not sure how the technology works. Perhaps some sort of multiple connection for each file it cues, however it does work well. My Bandwith meter now stays maxed at 256 almost all the time.

I'd LOVE to see this program add support for RSS feed downloads. It has made a huge difference in my Usenet & Internet Music store downloads.

CORPSECORPS  I've never really understood the download manager concept but thought it was time i see what the fuss is about. I essentially just want a way to quickly and simply add items from a site, queue 'em up and forget it.

I don't quite understood the supposed speed advantage bit since nothing is going to retrieve data faster than my ADSL connection's maximum or pick through a website to locate what i need.

If i choose "Add Files", i'm expected to have gotten all the URLs from someplace, to paste them into the dialog. Where files are so often served up by scripts and the like, i don't see how specifying login info and URLs is going to get the site to cough them all up. Rarely am i downloading where multiple pieces of a file can be obtained simultaneously, or downloads resumed.

"Add Files From URL" doesn't fly either. It requires one URL to take it directly to the place to login, and to be able to get what i want as soon it's done so, without navigation, or else start hoovering up every link that fits the criteria.

If i want to just pick and choose (or filter) items from a particular page, either i have to click links one by one, specify where i want each file saved, and then click again to select the browser window to do the next; Or set a relatively permanent pref and click each link to have all go to the same folder.

No way to choose many links from one page all at once and send them off to one destination?

Getting some images, for instance, it's faster to command-click each link so it shows in a new tab, then go dragging items to a folder and closing tabs. Takes less time than getting them into the Speed Download queue!

I tried the "Download Them All" add-on for Firefox. At least i could just click and get a list of all links on the page, quickly filter them, click start and they're all off the same destination without any further interaction. Unfortunately, it had it's own set of snarls, but free and simpler than this, if uglier.

Yes, i know this has fancy P2P and FTP support; which i have no use for.

Maybe i just don't get it.

BLOWEN  I am one of those who knows just enough about computers to be dangerous, the kind IT guys have to bail out. Unfortunately I have no IT guys, so I have to fix whatever breaks. I, too, acquired Speed Download 4 via the MacHeist bundle, after seeing it on action on the ScreenCastsOnline podcast (another good one). Speed Download was easy to install and use for downloading off the internet. The instructions for connecting two computers via SD were also very clear, so now transferring files from my desktop to my laptop is a snap, too. I am looking forward to using the free licenses that came with the purchase on 5.0 on new machines this summer. I have yet to use the FTP function, but I suspect that will work as well as the rest.

I was unaware of the ruffled feathers regarding the upgrade to 5.0 until seeing the comments here, but am not surprised. I have happily shelled out for the 5.0 upgrade with a free upgrade to 6 when it comes, and had decided that I would have bought the upgrade to 5.0 without the offer. I believe it is well worth the money.

The only thing I would like to see is an automatic archiving feature that would take a folder, archive the contents, and send it across to the target machine. I bet this could be done with a script, but I'm not there yet.

M57  SD 5 is a superb application. I only use the basic features, and SD 5 has made it easier for users like me to not get confused by the advanced features. My main need is to schedule downloads to occur in the middle of the night, when my satellite ISP does not enforce a download limit, which large downloads inevitably exceed. SD has not failed me once. I get all the downloads I need queued up, then go to bed. In the morning everything is there, downloaded, sorted, and filed and ready to go. It has saved me countless sleepless nights doing all this manually.

Support is good. I had one issue once, and they handled it promptly via email. Turned out the problem was not with SD but another app.

I give 5 stars on all except ease of use because with all the advanced features it can get a little confusing. I like applications with depth, because when you need it it is there, and SD5 has improved on simplicity since SD 4, but it could still go a bit further in making some of the basic tasks a little more obvious to a first time user. Other than that, highly highly recommended.

CPAUL_PHL  This was one of those packages that I'd never tried, but was part of my MacHeist II bundle. Having installed and used it, I honestly can say it's now a "must-have" in managing my downloads. The developer has always been very responsive to questions as well.

Lots of the feedback on here has unfortunately been negative - not about the product - but about the mis-step in bundling SpeedDownload 4 as part of MacHeist, and then releasing a paid upgrade a week later. I'm happy to say that in the end, YazSoft did what's right - and offered this as a free update for MacHeist II customers. It was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and a complete lack of understanding on how the market works. But all is resolved now.

JERRY BARRACK  I have been having difficulty for at least 6-months reliably downloading larger files from Internet sites to my hard drive. This has occurred with a PowerMac running Tiger and an Intel PowerBook, both running Tiger (OS 10.4.11), and a spanking new MacPro running Leopard (OS 10.5.2). With files greater than 3-4MB, the downloads would usually stop and timeout before finishing. My ISP, sbcglobal, has not resolved this issue. However, with Speed Download 4 and now 5, files, regardless of size, download rapidly and reliably. Without Speed Download, it would be impossible for me to download any system or application updates. For me, this application is a life saver.

LRDNTWND  I have ben very impressed with Speed Download. Once it was installed, anytime I click on a download, it pops up and starts downloading at speeds I've never seen before when just downloading through Safari (one download was downloading at 1.5Mbits/sec!!!). It's really easy to configure custom settings for it and it can even group downloads into specific folders for you as they get downloaded. So, disk images and zip files can go into an "Applications" folder and video clips can go into a "Videos" folder and so on. It's really awesome. I think the only thing I could ask for is the ability for Speed Download to speed up all the downloads on the system including application and system updates. This is one of the best purchases I've made for my Mac. Thanks guys!

JEMMINGER  Used v4 for a month or so and very happy with it. I like how it can make multiple connections to increase the download speed. Also like the ability to enter a url and have it discover file urls to download. Using v5 now for a few days and all is well, plus the app shrank by 5 MB or so :)

I still occasionally see it hang when rapidly sending a lot of files to it via Safari's context menu option "Speed Download > Download with Speed Download"

CRAIG BRADLEY  SD 5 has been something of a revelation. I never thought I needed a download manager, but once I tried Speed Download on a friend's recommendation, I realized how much it could help.

Just one quick feature I'd like to plug. When you remove an item from the list of downloads in SD, it asks if you'd also like to move the actual downloaded file to the trash. Wow, what a brilliant idea, as obvious as sliding doors on both sides of a minivan. Cuts my clean up time in half.

OGKN06  I bought this software from the Macheist bundle and like 1password this has become an essential tool for me. I like the fact that I can delete the downloaded files no matter where I place them and also love the way that it makes use of all the internet speed of the network. It literally sucks the available sources until it completes the tasks it's been assigned to. I'm not a pro user but I've read that you can add any site's download links to download more professionally (ie. using it with your rapidshare premium account). This would save enormous time for a pro user. Frankly I didn't like the fact that SD charged new users for an update after such a short time but I'm very happy that things have settled and we get a free upgrade to SD 5. Finally I'd like to comment on the support, it is fantastic. Very fast and very helpful. They are very flexible and understanding. It is so nice to meet real humans that can understand your problems, concerns and come up with real solutions rather than direct you to other links in order to save their own time. As far as I can tell these guys are dedicated to their work.

Today, I upgraded to version 5.0 since Yazsoft has made amends to all MacHeist II customers. I appreciate that very much and the fact that they have given us a free second serial number for version 5.0. This free serial number is now being used on my new black MacBook. :)

Yazsoft has gone even further to give all MacHeist II customers a free upgrade to version 6.0. That made me rethink my previous harsh comments.

I am running version 5.0 right now and it is stable and looks much better than version 4.0 IMHO.

AJBIS  I'm one of those Mac Heist customers. I tried not using SD for a while, but missed the browser integration and centralised downloads. So I read Yazsoft's explanation of the whole upgrade policy vs Mac Heist discount and more importantly the offer they made to make amends. I emailed them few times for details and they where prompt and friendly. I ended up buying the SD5 upgrade (even though I'm still slightly miffed at SD4 auto-updating to SD5 Demo, cos of some checkbox I ticked when I first installed it). I think it was a good decision. SD5 is primarily an interface clean-up (bit like CS3), but still a good deal.

EECHAN  seems like incoming files are at least double of using the Safari's bultin download manager, especially with multiple files going at the same time.

The upgrade instructions seem to indicate that I had to run the uninstaller when going from version 4 to version 5 so I lost my download history :( Minor ding for that in the ratings, but otherwise this is great software to have in your Applications folder.

JRIETZ  I had purchased a drafting program on line which was a 2.6 GB download. Every browser I tried failed many times before reaching 1.5 GB.

I happened onto a message in the drafting forum mentioning Speed Download. I downloaded and installed it. It downloaded the 2.6 GB file on the first try and did it about 30% faster, according to its statistics.

I have since purchased Speed Download and use it not only for downloads, but also uploads. Comcast seems to throttle uploads after the initial start to about 35KB/s. Speed Download ups the throughput to 47-48 KB/s and allows multiple uploads.

CRENTIST  I recently purchased Speed Download 4 and have been very impressed with how the program magically seems to make full use of my otherwise meager download speed through our ISP. Time and time again Speed Download not only gets a consistently higher speed than my browser for web downloads, but even organizes my downloads for me based on file type, etc. It took a little poking around to get the settings the way I wanted them to be, but I assume that for most people, the defaults would be fine.

A very well-written Mac app, and with the new mini-window in version 5 (a-la the iTunes mini controller), the package just keeps getting better.

MACMARIA  This app just speeds your downloads / uploads so much it's astonishing. Best, it works on normal downloads, FTPs, iDisk, and even in the same network.

So far I contacted the developers 2 times (one regarding OmniWeb support, another regarding bonjour filesharing). Both times on weekend and both times I had a reply in less than 20 minutes. I'm well impressed with them.

SD is also very stable. Never crashed once and behaves like advertised.

The only thing I ask is the update of their PDF manual. :)

KOBALT  I'm missing the options previously available for the toolbar. No longer can I have an icon for 'Hold' or 'Queue'. I just don't know why Yazsoft had to take those out - I always found them very handy. Now I have to right-click a file(s) to access those actions.

But apart from that, the app performs as expected. No real problems on my G5 (Tiger5.2).

THUNDERCLAP82  In response to all those MacHeist people complaining. How many programs did you get for the $50 you spent? Was it ten? So you got Speed Download 4 for $5?

I've been a registered user since version 3 when I spent $25 for the full program. I then spent $15 for the version 4 upgrade and then again for version 5. Why? Because Speed Download is good software with good customer support and it irritates me when a bunch of cheap bastards cry foul for no good reason.

Get over it.

DAVIDWB  Speed Download is, overall, a very good download manager. Perhaps the best. However, the company has a long history of unhappy customers when it comes to upgrades. Perhaps this is nothing more than poor judgement and a lack of business acumen. Perhaps it is because they are marginally honest. I don't know which and won't speculate, but there is a history here and many who are new to the Mac may not understand that this is not the first time the company has found itself in a firefight over its upgrade policy and its attempts to cool the fire.

That Yazsoft knew they were going to release a new version is obvious and it isn't the point. I bought the bundle expecting that by late winter or early spring I'd be upgrading a couple programs from the bundle. What is the point is that the grace period for Speed Download is exactly in that period when MacHeist buyers purchased and there was NO notice that we were buying a product that wasn't eligible for the free upgrade at that time.

Yazsoft screwed up three times. First in not informing us upfront that we were buying a product that wouldn't be eligible for free upgrade. Second in offering a grace period that included MacHeist purchases. And now a third time in not admitting their mistake and attempting to make amends.

A week ago I'd have been happy with nothing more than an admission on their website that they had messed up. I'd have paid the upgrade price knowing I was dealing with people who were fallible and admitted it. A couple days ago, after reading employee attempts to explain, without admitting they messed up, I'd have accepted an official company apology and a lower upgrade price. Today, the only hope the company has of ever getting another penny from me is to honor the grace period for MacHeist owners.

SILVER25U  Speed Download is a decent application - for what I've been using it for it does a good job. The two areas I've noticed a difference is it taking over my browser downloads and organizing my download folder as well as the ability to resume downloads. What's stopping my recommendation of this application is the developers. I purchased this app through MacHeist II and so far have been dishonest and less than fair handed in their treatment of their new found users. It was quite clear to all involved that we were purchasing full and completely normal licenses. They now release a new version with a grace period for recent buyers. This grace period includes MH2 buyers, yet they come up with incorrect for untruthful excuses to live up to their obligations. Support is one of the most important aspects of an application. This incident has shown Yazsoft's poor support and grasp of customer service. For people considering SD I suggest you read the forums over at Macheist.com and then read Yazsoft's response and make your own judgement.

PIRX  I am very surprised. Today Speed Download prompted me to update so I did, and afterwards I found out that my license is no more valid and that they expect me to buy a new full-price license.

I have never experienced that before.

Usually, a developer would announce that this is a version upgrade which requires buying a new license and ask, if I would want to upgrade.

Instead, Yazsoft push this upgrade down your throat and expect you to pay for it.

Unacceptable business conduct this is, Speed Download is off my PowerBook tonight.

KRYPTONIANSON  Yes, there was a mishap with MH users and YazSoft has owned up to their mistake and have begun correcting matters with their users (I got my V5 license at no cost). This is more than what many companies would have done. As far as V5 is concerned it seems so far to be a very nice improvement over the previous version. I particularly like the mini view they now provide, it makes it far more user friendly. I recommend using this software and purchasing from YazSoft.

FREQUENCY  I haven't seen one response yet from Yazsoft which addresses the question of their upgrade policy change on the DAY of the 5.0 release.

If their upgrade path was clear at all times from the beginning of the MacHeist promotion why did their site only add the clause:

"MacHeist purchasers are NOT elegible for Free upgrade"

on the very day that the 5.0 upgrade was released.

Thank you for all the input that you have provided us (the bad and the good). We would like to take this opportunity to add some more information in order to hopefully clarify a few issues that still remain at large.

Regarding the promo version of Speed Download 4 on MacHeist, there was never an agreement to offer licenses that were of equal standing to those purchased at full price via our online store.  While the software is fully functional and fully supported, the upgrade policy is different.  We regret not explicitely stating this.  We also realize the upgrade grace period that has added to the confusion.

Further, we realize now that having the upgrade pushed out via the update feature was perhaps not the best idea. The intention behind it was for practicality purposes. Clearly, the result was that it was a mistake.

We got involved without communicating our terms clearly enough and in hindsight should have sought a formal contract to at least help avoid issues such as this.  

We realize a lot of you are upset about this, and this upsets us as well. We are primarily software developers.  We have made some mistakes here and for that we apologize.  Please feel free to email us with your concerns and we will be happy to accommodate you.

But when YazSoft released new version my registration info became invalid for 5.0. And I need to pay 15 bucks for update!

Why, if my license is not promo? YazSoft has grace period for guys who bought Speed Download from 1 jan till 12 feb, but this doesn't works for MacHeisters!!!

SAUDIGAMER  I bought SD4 at the end of 2007, and when the program did an auto update, I mean upgrade, since when upgrades are passed as update? Just offer a webdownload and don't use the updater for upgrades!

So I had to remove SD5 then reinstall SD4 (good thing I kept my downloads) but now SD4 license doesn't work. Seems other people have the same issue ...

Also, I bought the MH2 bundle which included an extra SD4 license (I did not use it yet because I only have one mac). So I would like to reuse that license to upgrade my older one to 5 perhaps?

One last comment is regarding the numbering, 4.0 4.1 4.1.1 4.1.2 ... to 4.1.19 ... what's logically next? another update to 4.2 or if its a major "update" to 4.5 . Apple did it when they released Apaerture 1.5 and did not charge customers for it.

And from what I read about SD5 feedback, its not really a "major" update.

EFF  In lights of this weeks' MacHeist fiasco, I too suggest that potential customers think about whether or not they want to do business with a company like Yazsoft.

The upgrade rules posted on the Yazsoft website were changed hours **after** complaints from MacHeist purchasers began to trickle in - every single MacHeist customer:

- Purchased their copy of SD within the "free-upgrade" time frame.

- Was assured that their license was one that is 100% identical to the regular SD license.

It is entirely irrelevant whether or not MH customers got a great deal on SD, assurances were made by Yazsoft, which they chose to break/ignore. later on.

I for one will not be doing business with a company that engages in such questionable - possibly even illegal - practices.

CHRISWAN  You 'forgot' to mentioned the fact in that 'press release' that, not until a few hours of SD5 release and people start complaining did you 'revise/add' the clause in your website to exclude MacHeist customers and also the description in Auto Updater

GARY30  I wonder if all you MacHeist crybabies here are going to be honkin' into your hankies when Ambrosia releases its new SnapZ Pro version. Ambrosia, which was very upfront about using MacHeist to entice new users prior to its major upgrade, is about to do the same thing.

C'mon folks. You paid under 50 bucks for MacHeist. You got these apps for under $5 each. So if you decide to upgrade (nobody has a gun to your head), you can just as easily claim to have acquired Speed Download 5 for a net $20, a discount of $5 off the price of a new license.

On balance you got a hella deal. Untwist your knickers and go outside and play, or see if you can get an advance on your allowance so you can call someone who cares.

JAYK  Don't buy YazSoft products without thinking about it VERY carefully.

They have changed their upgrade policy AFTER many thousands of customers purchased their software.

I encourage you to be very wary of YazSoft and if there is another company that produces a similar package to a YazSoft package, go there. YazSoft has proven they have no problem with adjusting their agreements after the fact. This is bad news for the customer.

I paid full price for a SD3 license, paid the upgrade for SD4, and today SD4 automatically downloaded and *installed* the newest version 5 which has suddenly and without warning reverted to shareware and is now asking for more money.

PABLO2K  Great app, but already a paid for upgrade? I have earlier bought two licences for this one. I will not be looking at this if they don`t start doing business in a sensible manner. I have uninstalled version 4 as it doesn`t work properly in Leopard, to many strange things happening. This was really money down the drain, I won`t send any more down this drain. Hopefully they will change their policies and also treat their existing customers better.

RON HAMELIN  I liked this software and this company until version 5. It automatically downloaded version 5 without my consent. Then, VOILA, I had an unregistered version and could no longer use my "registered" version 4 because it was overwritten by version 5.

Fortunately, I had everything backed up and dragged version 4 from my backed up partition.

MINER  SD comes with an uninstaller in de folder that you drag to your HD to install.

Use that uninstaller, and you're fine, I have doen that many times when I went to and from iGetter.

I purchased this program within your time window, and therefore, I, along with thousands of other people, should get a FREE upgrade. I deleted Speed Download 5 - could not bloody download anything else after that. I had to actually reinstall Leopard to get rid of the problem. Thankfully, I have all my data backed up on a separate hard drive.

SWO  Speed Download is an app that I generally enjoy using. It downloads faster than Safari or Firefox via my broadband connection, though I am not sure that that is just my perception.
